Would give zero stars if I could. We ate at Rasa several times when it first opened and really enjoyed it -- food was fresh, flavorful and authentic. We even took friends there to introduce them to Malaysian food. We were in the city yesterday and decided to take my mother (who is Malaysian) -- we were so disappointed at the change in quality. Curry mee noodle soup was bland and brown (zero vegetables included). Roti canai came with one limp bread. And worst of all -- my mother's lemongrass mackerel, which cost $18, came OUT OF A CAN. Yes, that's right. She mentioned her suspicion to me, having eaten similar chili mackerel with a slightly different sauce out of a can, as we were leaving otherwise I would have raised it with the management right away. Sure enough, googled and found this image, the spitting image of what she was served! Absolutely indefensible. This was an AMAZING find while visiting my sister in NY about a year ago (don't judge me, this review was sitting in my drafts folder for almost a year!). Some of our favorite dishes included the Peneng Assam Laksa, Drunken Noodles, Shrimp Soup, Rainbow Roll, and Crispy Chili Chicken. The peneng assam laksa definitely wasn't something I would normal order (basically a tart fish soup) but I'm so glad I trusted the server's recommendation because it was phenomenal. This place had a really great ambiance, beautiful decor, and friendly staff - perfect for an intimate meal for two or dinner out with a group of friends/family. It was also a short walk from the subway, which was nice for my DC/northern Virginia-native family who aren't accustomed to too much walking (especially in the cold!). We have been to Malaysia and Singapore and have a fair idea of the cuisine though would not consider ourselves experts by any means. Having said that it truly took a detailed reading through the reviews of natives of Singapore and Malaysia to convince us to pay a visit And are we glad we did!!! The naysayers here should be totally ignored!! I've dined at Rasa twice now, and both times I experienced excellent service. Pineapple fried rice was really good although I prefer it without the tomato paste. I'm a big fan of pineapple fried so it was a big step for me experimenting with the sweet tomato flavoring. The spring rolls were really great, and splitting the rice and spring rolls were enough to feed myself and a friend. The clean bathroom was a hugeeee plus. Went there with friends for lunch and we all love this place! To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Malaysian/Thai food, but veggie spring rolls and the green curry are very fresh and tasty. My husband is a very picky eater and he LOVES the soft-shell crab and rendang beef , which are very well seasoned and cooked. This place really hit the spot but not the right one. The service was excellent but that doesn't excuse food that would fail an inspection from the health department. I ordered sushi and soft shell crab. The sushi wasn't fresh at all. The soft shell crab was room temperature and soggy. The pickled ginger was good though. One bite into this meal and I realized the fate of my evening had been decided. But hey, the bathrooms were clean... I rarely give out five stars. I save it for the times I'm blown away by the food (in appearance, smell and taste), location, cleanliness of the place and most importantly the service. This restaurant exceeded my expectations! It's not often I find all of those things at a halal Malaysian/Thai/Sushi place or at all for that matter. I loved the selection- it was definitely hard to choose from the menu, but me and the husband selected the following: wonton soup, roti canai, (spicy) Malay curried wings, Drunken noodles with beef, and Mee goreng huron, with the coconut tapioca balls and sweet rice with coconut topping for dessert. Everything was perfection! The husband liked the wonton soup. I'm not a fan of wonton soup but he liked it... one suggestion he had was to add scallions to enhance the flavor. We both enjoyed the roti canai- the roti was perfectly flaky and crispy and the curry sauce tasted delicious as expected. The husband described it as the perfect tease. My personal favorite was the Malay curried wings!!! I die for some good wings, and this hit the spot. #dead. I preferred the husbands Mee goreng to my drunken noodles. The flavors were much more complex... savory, rich and spicy! He substituted his thin noodles for wide drunken noodles and it perfectly fit the meal. My pad ke mao was a little on the sweet side, which I don't mind, but in comparison, his dish won. We topped off our feast with some coconutty goodness- unsure of which one to order, we got both and split them. The presentation of the desserts was a treat. However the coconut tapioca was less sweet than we expected. Nonetheless, both of our plates were wiped clean. The staff was friendly, helpful and QUICK to refill water, check on your food, attain to your needs. The decor was nice as well; a little on the romantic side... but no complaints. We'll definitely be back, and next time with friends. Very disappointing experience. The space is lovely, one of those long yet not too narrow restaurants with a lot of exposed brick and cool art on the wall. Perhaps this is a function of any restaurant that features too many cuisines (Japanese, Malaysian, and Thai food), but the two dishes we ordered on our first and only visit were mediocre in the case of the bento box and downright awful in the case of the Rendang Beef. The bento box was strange. First of all, it wasn't a box but a plate. It featured the expected teriyaki chicken and rice along with a passable miso and small salad but also some undercooked broccoli and two Chinese egg rolls. Huh? No wasabi, no sliced ginger. The meat was tender but the sauce added nothing to the flavor. I'm a huge fan of Malaysian food and can't often find it, so I was excited to come across Rasa not far from where I'm staying. I ordered a roti and the dinner version of the Rendang Beef. The roti was a single piece, not especially fresh-tasting, with a decent dipping sauce, but overpriced. The Rendang is a treasurable dish when made well, with robust flavor and tenderness. But in Rasa's case, it was thin, gristly, flat pieces of beef that tasted like a very cheap cut. I've never had a Rendang that wasn't at least tender. The scrawny pieces and the gristle factor - I spit out about a third of the dish because no amount of grinding seemed to work - made it unpleasant. The sauce was fair but couldn't make up for this very misjudged rendition. The cost didn't help. While Rasa has cheap lunches, this dish, which was pretty small (though it included rice), was ridiculously overpriced at $19. I don't know about the other dishes, but we won't be back to find out how they compare. If you can't do a decent bento or Rendang, I can't imagine the rest of the cuisine is worth the bother. Two stars because the environment was nice and the service reasonable, though not as responsive as it could have been. read more

Came here on a Sunday night. Quick and efficient staff, nice decor, clean restaurant. Drinks Thai iced tea- perfect Bengali tiger IPA- gross Mango sangria- delicious, comes with a lychee and some strawberries Appetizers Curried wings- bit dry Calamari- they're different but good. Bigger chunks as opposed to rings Chicken dumplings- good, nothing spectacular Entrees Didn't try my friends entrees, I got the Penang Assam laksa. Smelled WAY fishy (if you're familiar with Bengali food, smells exactly like shutki). It was good, hearty and very well spiced. A friend told me about this place a day ago and asked if I was interested. Being vegan, I had to make sure there were options. I am SO glad I chose this restaurant. I order the mango salad (appetizer) and vegetarian green curry. The reason that I did not give 5 stars is the fact that iceberg lettuce was used in salad. No decent restaurant should ever serve iceberg lettuce. The green curry was the best I've had....perfect balance of flavours. Came here twice for dinner. The service is really good and friendly, I always feel very welcomed by the servers and Aunty Cammie. As a Malaysian, it's tough to find really authentic Malaysian food in the city, and Rasa is the closest you can get to the real deal! The warm welcoming service is just the added cherry on top. Only tried a few dishes so far but these are ones I think are worth mentioning: The satay appetizer is really tasty; served without the skewer sticks and the usual peanut sauce. Rasa is amazing. I was so excited to find this place, since finding good and authentic Malaysian food isn't that easy, even in the city. Rasa completely blew past my expectations. The waitress could tell that we were Malaysian, and proceeded to recommend the most authentic and the best dishes on the menu. We followed her recommendations, which did not disappoint. We had appetizers of chicken satay and curry puffs. The chicken satay was probably the best satay we've ever had, and we've been to Malaysia and Singapore. Four warm and tender sticks to the plate with plenty of peanut sauce on top. We probably could have eaten an entire meal's worth of satay. The curry puffs (four of them to the plate) were also very good - maybe a little smaller than some I've had in Singapore, and a thicker pastry shell, but still very tasty. For entrees, we had curry laksa, okra with belacan, and Malaysian curry. The laksa and the belacan okra were delicious; those are some of my favorite dishes. I was a little disappointed they didn't have kang kung belacan, but okra was just as good. If you haven't had belacan okra or kang kung, I would highly recommend trying it. The Malaysian curry was a solid dish, although we'd probably order another dish next time. Finally, we had ice cendol. It's not served in a cup, like you might be used to in Malaysia or Singapore, but it's served in a bowl, ice kacang-style. They make the cendol in-house, and it's a delightful dessert to share. I found Rasa my freshman year because I used to live in the area. Nobody really knew about it, but it was a hidden gem. I'm Indonesian and although the food here is Malaysian and Singaporean, it reminded me a lot of the food back home. A lot of the employees there are from Indonesia and Malaysia and they were super friendly. I kept coming back and have brought friends to eat here. Food is great with sizable proportions. Staff's accommodating, except for one server by the name of Kelvin (if I recall correctly). He seems to carry a blacklist of customers he doesn't like, and he treats them with utter disdain when the owner's not looking. There is another poor review about Kelvin, and I think all other reviews that complain about service are about him and not the other wonderful people who work here. Kelvin is the guy with the shortest stature of the group and with a broad, weathered face and a high-pitched voice. He also constantly drags his shoes. If he approaches you, just be cool and ask for another server to attend to you. read more

To start off the morning, I walked into this little joint just based upon checking the nearby restaurants on yelp. The first attraction to this restaurant was the fact that I have never tried a Malaysian restaurant at all. Looking at the menu, they had quite a few options for the lunch special which was decently priced at 10$. One of my friends picked the Nasi Lemak, or malaysian chicken curry with potatoes and the Pad See Ew with chicken. The aromatic smells of the 2 dishes were intriguing and the portions were enough for him to be full. 2 lunch specials aren't necessary unless your appetite is quite large. For me, however, I was aiming to pick a dish that comprised mainly of protein so I checked the chef specialties side of the menu even though it was regular dinner price. I ended up ordering the Rendang Beef for 19$ and a side order of steamed vegetables for 3$. In the description of the menu, the beef has exotic spices, lemongrass, lime leaves, and grated coconut with thick coconut milk. For the price I paid, the amount of beef served for 19$ was not quite satisfactory. However, because I ordered the vegetables on the side, it was enough to keep me full. The beef was soft in texture and tasty but I felt that there was an over abundance of sauce. The sauce tasted milky and complimented the beef. The overall quality of the food wasn't bad but wasn't amazing at the price I paid for it. Therefore, my rating is based on price point and delivery of the meals. Definitely could pick a better restaurant for paying around 26$ after tip. The lunch special is most likely a smarter choice. read more
