It pains me to change my 5-star status, but this very loyal customer has been pretty disappointed with Roat Osha on my last few trips. Why? 1. They have definitely raised their prices. You get giant portions of noodle dishes and fried rice dishes - and that makes the $16 price tag easier to swallow knowing there are lots of leftovers - but the curry portions are half the size of other restaurants. $16 for red curry? No thanks. I'll go back to Karta, Thai, get twice the portion because it's the best food for leftovers, and still have money to spare. 2.The spice level is insanely inconsistent. I love spicy food but I never know whether to order a 2, a 3, or a 4 because it depends on the cook. I got my curry at a 3 today and could barely eat it but have gotten sriracha fried rice at 4 and it's more than palatable. What started off as just general bad food for absurd prices ended in even more disappointment as my party of four looked across the walkway to see a mouse scurrying under the tables. We informed the server who told us, "yeah, it's cold outside". Moments later we looked across to see yet another mouse running across the floor. We were unsettled to say the least. After eating relatively terrible food, and seeing 2 mice, we were given our check. No comp, no apologizes, no nothing. Maybe I'm being too hasty in making this decision, but considering I've had bland food twice now, I am not in a big hurry to give them another shot. Last Saturday my boyfriend and I were on our way to Amazing Thailand (on Hennepin, and truly amazing), when we were enticed by the easy parking at Roat Osha (which is, in my guesstimate, the establishment's primary draw-- they have their own parking lot, in Uptown!). We should have dealt with the hassle of street parking, though, because we both ordered meals that had very little flavor. I had the green curry and he had pineapple fried rice-- neither were noteworthy. However, the appetizer sampler was pretty tasty and it came with the restaurant's own jalapeno sauce, which is quick tasty! Never had anything like it before. Bottomline? I absolutely love this place. Hands down the best Thai restaurant I've been to. Although it is located in uptown, it has it's own parking. When you walk in, someone will greet you and find you a table. The waiter we had was very friendly and helpful. As for the food, remarkable! I always get the Chicken Pad Thai with medium spice. It is very well cooked and has a nice flavor to it. My friend got the beef skewers with jasmine rice. The beef is well cooked and very thick. The good: The food was good. They have a spiciness index for their food: 1 being mild and 5 being the spiciest. They have a nice patio. The bad: The service on the other hand was very poor and the prices were on the high side. The wait staff that we encountered were very moody; very rude at the beginning of the meal and tolerable near the end. The staffer who offered to box our food left with almost a full plate of noodles and came back with about a quarter of the food in a small box. I paid around $15 for a plate of noodles and mistakenly thought that I was entitled to all of it. Unless I hear that they revamped their customer service, I will not be a repeat costumer and would not recommend this restaurant. There are many more affordable restaurants in Minneapolis with much better service and at least equivalent food quality. read more

The first few times I went here I would have given four stars. I love that it has a parking lot and a deck and nice happy hour specials, they carry great beer, and I love the interior. That's 2 stars. I've enjoyed what I've tried here, which is usually limited to larb or laab gai and papaya salad. Other items, such as calamari and this sweet rice/pineapple dessert, have ranged from good to great. I've never not enjoyed a dish here, though I've also never had my mind blown. That's 2 stars. We're at four now. The last time I went there, it would have been another 4 star experience if we hadn't hit some kind of loop in the space-time continuum which resulted in the same event--our server failing to follow up on an assignment and then blaming some unnamed colleague who was "supposed to do it" while storming off to handle the situation--repeating a seemingly infinite number of times, at one point taking over 30 minutes to result in some takeaway salad rolls (they're basically Viet-style fresh spring rolls). This was extremely irritating because bad service is one thing, and a lack of accountability is quite another. -1 stars I would say the food is good but it doesn't make me levitate. This place is Lame. With a capital L. Over the weekend we made the very poor decision of eating here for my brother-in-law's birthday. He's from St. Cloud, which has very few good places to eat (sorry, but despite what locals say, Mexican Village isn't really that good--Val's, on the other hand, is), so when he's in town, we like to take him to standout places (this is not one of them). Being that he was in the mood for Thai and because my husband had been to Roat Osha before, we decided to give it a try. Honestly, the pricing seemed right and they had a happy hour going on in the middle of the day, so why not? Why not?! Because most people on Yelp had warned its audience to expect s*it service and lackluster food, which is exactly what happened. The Ugly: -When we walked in the door, there was a sign noting that they'd be closing for the next 7 - 10 days for maitenance. Red flag! When you see a sign like that, 1) you know you're getting the scraps/lefties in the kitchen; 2) the servers have already checked out; and 3) the restaurant clearly has more than "maintenance" issues. Most dining establishments take care of their maintenance issues after hours, not by shutting down for a week+. -The service was extremely slow. We were one of roughly three tables in the entire place and ordered five entrees--it took a whole hour to get our food. No apologies, no explanations. -It took the server three tries to get a happy hour beer to my husband. Bascially he had no idea what was left on tap. I'm surprised they still had curry paste in the kitchen. The Bad: -A chilly welcome from an irritable server who reluctantly seated our party. -Pad Thai--blech. You'd be better off going to the grocery store and grabbing one of those ready-made boxes where you just add water. Overly wet and soggy. Flavor was uninspiring. -The server, while cooly friendly, did not know the menu or the beer list. His excuse was he was "just filling in". Where did he come from? Olive Garden? -There was a manager around but he certainly wasn't managing. Not to sound too judgy, but I had a fair amount of time to look around during the hour wait for our food--he looked like one of those trolls that crawls out from under the bridge only when he needs to find sustenence or to take a dump. With his glasses slid to the very tip of his nose, his mouth permanently gaping loosely open to the left in an expression that said "I've barely got a pulse" and a gut that indicated at least somebody liked the food, I immediately understand why nobody there gives a f**k about the food, service or atmosphere. -The food comes out in shifts. It took them four runs from the kitchen to bring us our five entrees. The Good: -Monster portions. I ate some of my Pad Thai there, then my husband and I split it for lunch the next day. 3 servings for the price of 1? Yes! -No one was there. Wait! Is that good? No one was there because this place is awful. -They were willing to create a pared-down, kid-friendly order of Pad Thai for the lone child in our group. There are too many other good Thai places in town to waste ones time or money eating at this place. I have a feeling the only reason they're getting by is because their sister restaurant is keeping it afloat. I'd rather eat at Red Slobster than this sorry excuse for a Thai restaurant. First off, I don't understand people dinging this place so much. Do those people remember the Sawatdee that was there before? They should be thanking their lucky stars Roat Osha tore down that eyesore, put up a nice building, and brought the Tum Rup Thai menu north of Lake St. To summarize my pov, I think Roat Osha does a good job of serving up reliable and tasty Thai at reasonable prices in a pleasant atmosphere. As for service, I'm generally happy with it. Is it perfect? No. But seriously, where in Uptown is there flawless service? Doesn't exist. Regarding the food, I'd give them 5 stars if they provided more variety. I appreciate the differences from the Tum Rup Thai menu, I like the walleye dish, but it's time to add more options (more specials, something). Judging from my first visit to Roat Osha on Christmas Eve, it has already surpassed it's sister restaurant (Tum Rup Thai) in more than one area. First, there are some unusual menu options that you don't see at other Thai restaurants. I had a ginger stir-fry dish with tofu that came out on a sizzling fajita plate. It was loaded with fresh veggies and the spice level was intense, which I appreciated since I adore spicy food. I highly recommend this dish to anyone who loves ginger and veggies. Second, the service was perfect, which was surprising due to 2 factors: 1) the restaurant is very new and 2) the service at Tum Rup Thai is spotty on the best nights and downright horrible on others. The space has a similar feel to Tum Rup - modern, elegant, streamlined. The design won't knock your socks off, but it's a nice change of pace from many hole in the wall Thai joints around town. I am eager to go back to see if the great service holds up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed because as of now it's my favorite Thai spot in Uptown. Oh,and they make a mean Mai Tai. read more

I went here once before and I thought it was fairly tasty (I had a green curry that was purportedly "spicy" but I'm hard to out-spice), but I went here recently and was super disappointed by the massamun. The interior is quite lovely, but I think it's a lot of show for not a lot of deliciousness. The waiters are really nice, it's true, but that alone does not a good meal make. I will try it again, perhaps, and hopefully have something better to say. But I think there are definitely better places to be had in the Cities. read more

I've been to Roat Osha twice now. Both times have definitely been positive experiences. Although, the first time I made a slight mistake in ordering which spurred me to wait until my second trip to write an accurate review. The atmosphere here is definitely a plus. The decoration is great, it is very clean, and has a slightly upscale feel, without feeling as if you would need to dress up or anything. There is also a bar area and an outdoor patio area, which would be great in the summer. They also have a private parking lot, which for uptown is great. Over the course of the two times here, my boyfriend and I tried the following dishes: -Sweat Peanut Curry with chicken (Denoted as "new" on menu) -Tilapia fish filet with curry -Pad Thai with chicken -Jungle Curry with beef (Not positive on exact name as it was always "new" so is not on the online menu available on their website) -Thai fried rice -Cranberry cream cheese wontons All of the dishes were very good. I would definitely suggest the sweet peanut curry, it was excellent. The meat is cooked well and seems to be of good quality. The veggies were fresh, and they give a solid amount of rice with your dish. The spice level, however, was a slight problem during our first visit. My boyfriend was born in Ghana, Africa and I was born in Seoul, South Korea. We both have lived in America almost our whole lives but have kept our ethnicity a large part of our lives. Korea, and especially West African cuisines include VERY spicy foods so we both have a relatively high spice tolerance. (Blazin' wings at Buffalo Wild Wings don't phase us!) But during our first visit, we ordered our dishes at a "5 stars" for spice level, and boy did they deliver. The spice was a little out of control, and although it was tolerable, it really took away from the actual flavor of the dishes. I did read an earlier review that the spice level was lacking, so maybe they decided to do something about it! However, the second trip there we both ordered a "4 star" for our dish and were pleased; still a little spice, but the flavor of the dishes ring through. The service was great both times here. The only downside was that I had to pack up my dishes into to-go boxes myself. I would have expected my waiter to do this for me at a restaurant like this. Oh, Roat Osha. If you weren't so conveniently located and if I didn't have such a fondness for your massaman curry, I'm not sure I would be back here as much as I am. The food is good - not great, not sub-par, but solidly good. The spice ratings (i.e. the standard 1-5 scale) typically are spot on. Meaning, if I order a 2 (hey - I'm Minnesotan!) I will get a slight heat without hurting my apparently sensitive palate. The only complaint about the food is that if I modify my order slightly - curries should ALWAYS have mushrooms in my opinion, the likelihood of me actually getting the mushrooms is hit-or-miss. The spotty service is what kills me. In the dining room it's always been better than at the bar, but even that can be shaky. I'm not sure if they are constantly understaffed because it seems that way when my water glass is ever half empty and I'm waiting some time for my check. With all of the other thai options, I could easily always go somewhere else, but there's something about the nostalgic old-Sawatdee space that is my siren song. I'm actually surprised Roat Osha only has a 3 star rating on Yelp bc I find the food pretty authentic and tasty [my Asian ethnicity justifies this quite a bit :) ] I ordered the salmon spring roll which was good. The hot sauce dipping was wonderfully spicy and flavorful. However, I would hope for the rolls to have some other ingredients besides salmon only. My entree was the Thai Fried Rice (5 stars for spiciness!) and it tasted great. It wasn't just merely dumb*** spicy but it actually had the right amount of taste in it. It had sliced pork (you can choose your protein), onion, eggs. My only criticism is the presentation of the food. The cucumber garnishing was huge (probably 1/5 an entire cucumber) and so were the sloppily chopped onions which were I'm rather large chunks. I'm a huge fan of Thai food, and was a little disappointed coming to Roat Osha for the second time. Last year I got the pad Thai and liked it! It was good. This time, I'm disappointed with the lack of flavor of the Massaman curry. I think it was decent, but not bold in flavor as the dish is supposed to be. The potatoes were too big, but cooked well. The jasmine rice was clumped together. My sister enjoyed the pineapple fried rice, but I thought it was a bit flavorless as well. It had that smoked flavor which is great, but not enough sweetness backed it up. The spring rolls were yummy as well as the cream cheese wontons and the fried spring rolls were decent. I literally live across the street and absolutely love their food. The Pad Pak Raumid is amazing--full of veggies, delicious with tofu. They listen to vegan requests. That said I've had numerous problems with service here. The hostess is rude more often than not, the servers tend to ignore you or act annoyed if you want something (another drink, etc.), and the bar is slow, slow, slow. Never expect them to be nice--my friends were once yelled at for asking for more fortune rolls after we'd spent over $100 on drinks. Very polite. We are fans of Tum Rup and were very excited to have a Roat Osha open closer our place. We went to the restaurant and the food was fine. Nothing really spectacular just ok. In saying this, I am one of those people who likes to wait a good 6 months before going to a new establishment. Usually this is when they get it all down and fix the issues in the kitchen. But seeing this was already an established restaurant concept and they were bringing in chefs who worked at Tum, I broke this rule. The restaurant is nicely designed with some of the elements you would find at Mai Village. It is a little dark so if you have trouble reading the menu in a lit place you may have difficulty. I have now lived in Uptown for about a year and I pass Roat Osha on a daily basis and I always find myself saying I want to try that place. Well today was finally the day! We went for dinner on a Tuesday at 7pm and we were seated right away, it was pretty empty inside, but the patio was full. We started our meal off with an order of the cream cheese wontons, we asked for half of them to be regular and half jalapeno, since they have both on the menu. I would highly recommend the jalapeno wontons especially if you like a little spice. I will be ordering them the next time I go and I may not share them. For my main dish I had the sriracha fried rice with chicken. When you order they ask what level of spicy you want. A 1 is mild and 5 is their spiciest. I ordered a 3 thinking I could handle it because I usually order Indian food at a medium level. However, this was probably some of the spiciest food I have ever had, my mouth was on fire. I was able to balance out the spicy a little with the tomato and cucumber that came with my fried rice. I did notice that one side of my massive plate of rice was spicier than the other, so I recommend giving your food a quick stir when you get it. The servings are very large, so bring your appetite! I really liked the decor and the layout of the restaurant. The service was good, minus the waitress wrote down one of my friends orders wrong, so he got the wrong food, but she apologized and offered to re-submit his order. read more

Roat Osha is a staple in our household rotation of restaurants. My husband and I have a very specific ritual we adhere to when we go to Roat Osha. 1. We sit at the bar (or in the bar area). 2. We order whatever the drink special is, since there are usually great deals on beer or bottles of wine for happy hour. It changes every day, but it's pretty great, consistently. 3. We order fresh salad rolls and a large Wonton Noodle soup, at a spice level 3. Now this might sound SUPER boring, but this is one of my favorite comfort foods here in Minneapolis. The wonton noodle soup is DIVINE. Rich, filling and fresh all at once--it combines, noodles, pork wontons, fresh herbs and spice. We seriously don't even order anything else. That's our dinner for two and we always leave full and really happy. read more

We then got a reservation for us at 7pm, for 7 people. The food was AMAZING. The Riesling was great. The service was STELLAR. Parking is Easy (they have a lot) Beautiful Interior We had a wide array of food, for which you order the spice on a level from 1 to 5. I got 4, and wow it was HOT and delicious! I had the Steak Kabobs it came with great rice and a hot dipping sauce. We had 3 apps: Chicken Satay Pork Dumplings Cream Cheese Won-ton ALL AMAZING. All and All I would say give this place a shot! The food was decent, but the atmosphere was not for me. Our service was exceptionally slow and the bartenders were not the nicest guys, kind of self entitled. There were also numerous loud and obnoxious customers who were clearly drunk and disruptive to everyone around them, including my party. The staff made no effort to calm them down or ask them to leave, and even continued to serve them drinks. I believe there is even a law against serving patrons who are too intoxicated. I was quite unimpressed with my experience, and will not return. Went to dinner here last night with my sister. I haven't been here since it was Sawatdee. I was pleasantly surprised with the decor and the atmosphere. I like the updates and the modern, yet relaxed vibe. I was also pleased at the affordability of the menu, which also included a lot of choices. To start we ordered the lettuce wraps, which is there fresh spring rolls, which came with two sauces, a peanut hoison, and a sweet chili peanut sauce. Both dishes we ordered were tasty, generous portions, and satisfying. My only complaint was the inconsistency of the spice level. I ordered the red curry noodle special, with a spiciness of 5/5. My sister ordered the sweet cashew stir fry at a spice level of 3. Her meal was much spicier. I love the heat of thai food, and felt my 5/5 was barely spicy at all. I always thought Roat Osha looked pretty from the outside every time I pass it on Hennepin. It was confirmed when I finally got to visit this particular Thai place, out of the many Thai places crowding the Uptown area. It's wonderful that they have their own parking lot, a miracle in car-congested uptown. The interior was pretty; lots of paintings, good lighting, interesting statues. We still had time to order off the happy hour menu, so I got their version of the mojito, which had basil leaves. It was absolutely delicious and refreshing. I was a little miffed with their spring rolls. They were average with slightly interesting sauces, but were grossly overpriced. Two piddly pieces sliced in half for $6? Total ripoff. The server was decent; he came around several times to check on drinks when we were waiting for our friend to join. However, it took a while for our entrees to arrive, which I found surprising because we were one of the earlier patrons (i.e. not a lot of diners). For my entree I got the beef mee kah tee. I frankly don't care for the show of pouring the sauce over the noodles table-side; I care more that the dish tastes good. And it was pretty good, I must say. The mild met my quota for spiciness (so, yes, I'm a wimp). For dessert, I tried out the fried banana with Sebastian Joe's ginger ice cream, and my friend had the sticky rice with Thai pudding. The fried banana (there were two) was beautifully fried and crunchy, paired with the always perfect SJ ice cream it was divine. I wanted to like this place, I really did. However, 3 out of 4 visits were less than satisfactory. Rude, obnoxious servers (one literally yelled the daily specials at us), mediocre overpriced food, and crappy weak drinks. The crowning glory was Halloween night. We showed up around 10, only to find out they were limiting service to the bar area, with only happy hour apps for order. The apps were limited and unexciting. The waitress was rude, demanding our drink orders without so much as a "hi, how are you?" They basically rushed us through our meal, and chased us out so they could close early. The should have just turned us away at the door! We won't be going back. We'll stick to Amazing Thailand and Sawatdee Express. read more

Amazing restaurant and wonderful service. Our waiter Troy was very knowledgeable and hospitable! He was very accommodating and friendly. He definitely made out vist worth while. Cant wait to come back and enjoy some good Thai food! read more
