HOLY SHIT. This little dumpster of a restaurant that's on the same lot as a motel OWNS SO FUCKING HARD. I got roasted duck with noodles and man...That shit is just straight up...fucking amazing. The way the duck is cooked, the spicing is great. Better than most places where I've had duck. It's awesome. The neighborhood sucks, the parking sucks, hell, the inside of the restaurant is fuck ugly, but man....this place is just nuts. Food is just too damn good and it's cheap as hell. My hubby and I took my sister (who lives in LA and frequents Thai Town) and my parents (who are visiting from Thailand) to Siam Sunset this past Saturday. We ordered a bunch of food, including the pa-tong-go or Chinese donuts, jok moo or porridge with pork, ka-nom-jean (rice noodles, which they interestingly call "Thai spaghetti") with green curry, and sticky rice with barbecue pork. The menu has a huge selection with prices from $2.99 a dish (the pa-tong-go are even cheaper!) The Chinese donuts are undoubtedly the highlight of the meal--fried dough, served with gooey, sweetened condensed milk for dipping. So good!!! Even my parents commented that nowadays it is hard to find good pa-tong-gos in Bangkok, and these were good--fried to a light, golden crisp on the outside with a soft and slightly chewy texture on the inside. We will definitely be back, especially for their breakfast items like the Chinese donuts, soy milk, and porridge. read more

Only come here to eat HAINESE CHICKEN. Theirs is the MOST AUTHENTIC I've eaten. PORTION SIZE is more than enough for two people. I usually ask for just white meat but they do offer dark meat as well. Rice is so fragrant and delicious. Their dipping sauce is JUST LIKE THAILAND. Last time, I had the FRIED CRULLER w sweetened condensed milk. OH SO GOOD. Siam Sunset has always been my place for inexpensive Thai Breakfasts. Thank you to Jonathan Gold to remind me that I needed to have breakfast at Siam Sunset again, because I needed their warm tofu pudding to nurse me back to health. It's the cure all for any ailment, because of what I call the herbally "ginger soup" and the protein packed tofu pudding. They serve a lot of tofu pudding at Siam Sunset and it's inexpensive too. The kitchy restaurant is almost full to capacity with local Thai people in the early mornings and a rather loud flat screen TV fixed with 80's James Bond movies. Just about everything can be ordered for breakfast, but if you want traditional, I suggest sticking with the tofu pudding and rice porridge. read more

This place is the BOMB SHELTER!!!!! Secret hole in the wall styles at its finest. I know the owner and he is a good cook, NO DOUBT!!! There are alot of good solid items here. Heres a small list of stuff I can vouch for Mint/Basil ground beef or fish fillets or shrimp over rice. Rard Nar shrimp or chicken. Hainan Chicken Yen ta fo Pork leg stew (Kao Kaa Moo) is the BOMB!!! My recs are: Chinese jok rice porridge with thin slices of liver, egg (optional) and pa-tong-go donuts Tofu pudding and ginger soup/syrup soy milk with the special add-ons such as tapioca balls and jello **** TOM YAM rice stick noodles **** the best tom yam noodles outside of Thailand Hainan chicken rice Parking is a hassle and Siam Sunset's prices are slightly higher than other Thai places but worth it. Siam Sunset is a discreet, hole-in-the-wall , super authentic, kinda ugly restaurant that I get dragged to by my Thai parents who insist it's the best Thai place in town and I always bitch and complain about going there but once I'm there and eating I think DAMN this place is good. It's very low-key. Every time I go, its full of Thai people (which is a very good sign for a Thai restaurant) reading newspapers and/or loudly discussing Thai news, Thai lakorns (soap operas) or local Thai community gossip. Maybe that's why my parents love it so. Reminds them of home. The food is superb, as other Yelp reviews have proclaimed. One of the only places in the city where you can get Thai breakfast like jok (porridge or congee) and freshly made pah tong goh (Chinese donuts served with sweet condensed milk.) I'm drooling as I write this. Everyone raves about their breakfast selection and their Kao Mun Gai so I will rave about something else: Ba Mee Moo Dang. Ba Mee Moo Dang is an egg noodle dish with bbq red pork and Asian greens, cooked in a light tangy sauce. I love this dish so much and Siam Sunset makes it well - just like mom! I don't get the soup version, I like mine stir-fried. It's amazing and I recommend this to everyone! Tips: 1) You can park in the motel parking lot and there's ample street parking. 2) It can be hard to find since it's such a tiny restaurant. Used to like this place but uuuuggghhhhh... not good anymore. Food? Mediocre. The food was bland and the portion was small. Curry dishes tasted like they tried to cut cost by putting 1/2 amount of curry/meat/veggies so they can put the other 1/2 in second dish. I'm a bit of a fiend for boat noodles, and Siam's version is one of the best bowls that I've had yet. It's high on the spice meter though, so I was constantly blowing my nose. But I'd say that it was still worth the mild nasal discomfort. Abundant in everything (soup, noodles, beef, vegetables), the ratios were appropriate and more than enough to satiate my craving. Even though I was full halfway through the bowl, I couldn't stop eating, simply for taste and flavor. The hainan chicken is also probably the best that I've had. The combination of boiled soft chicken, seasoned rice, and the delicious dipping sauce completely blows Savoy Kitchen (of SGV hainan chicken fame) out of the water. We also ordered the duck curry to take home, and tasted it before packing it up. The duck was beyond flavorful and succulent, which is how duck should always be. Did I mention that everything on the menu is ultra inexpensive? I imagine this is pretty close to authentic, especially with the restaurant overrun by Thai patrons. When we showed up for lunch one weekday afternoon, it was packed. We had the option of sharing a table with other random patrons, or waiting for our own. We waffled but ultimately decided to wait to sit alone, which is probably best, considering I became a snot machine once I started eating my bowl of noodles. While the ambiance is nothing worth mentioning (the restaurant is attached to a shady looking motel), it won't matter much once you're filling your face with some of the tastiest (and cheapest) Thai food in town. read more

If I'm ever up at the crack of dawn, which is basically how early you'd have to rise to wait for their freshly fried chinese donuts or pa thong goe. These fried fritters are traditionally a thai breakfast item dipped in condensed milk, and then eaten with a cup of coffee. Also on the breakfast menu is their famous rice congee with minced pork balls, ginger, scallions, and a raw egg dropped into the hot hot rice congee. They start serving breakfast at 6a.m. and usually run out of said food items by 8 or 9a.m. For lunch and dinner, they serve typical thai dishes. Not really happy since I asked and had asked twice to make sure if the spring rolls was only vegetables with no pork. The person that took my order said it was only vegetables. Guess what I was given- the spring rolls with Chinese sausage inside it - guess what that is - yeap that has pork. For Thais, comfort food comes and breakfast comes in the form of soup and porridge. This is my favorite place to come for Jok (porridge) and pork blood's soup. The exterior is deceiving, so is its neighbor, the 99 cent store and the motel. But hey, the food is good. Having jok and pork blood's soup for breakfast take me back to studying abroad in Thailand, where we'd walk to the local restaurant and have jok each morning before heading to class. It's simple, yet it takes skills to make it right -- the right consistency, the amount of time the meat is boiled, and most importantly, having the pah tong goh (Chinese donuts) to go with it. That's right, dump them into your porridge -- they'll be like croutons. Best of all, we Thais love to eat them dipped in condensed milk. Mmm...pah tong koh with condensed milk and a coffee also make a great breakfast. I've been coming here for years, mostly for their breakfast foods, but I hear my favorite dish, Hainam Chicken is all the rage here as well, so don't forget to give that a try. read more

Siam Sunset has proven to me that the best food can always be found in the random nooks and crannies of L.A. It's definitely a neighborhood joint and it is always packed with Thai locals taking in a leisurely afternoon meal. Whenever we come here, it seems like all the patrons know each other and we just walked into a family's giant dining room. The restaurant is located in the parking lot of an adjoining motel. We come on Sundays for late lunches before they close at 4. Their sign says they serve Chinese and Thai cuisine, but we've stuck to the Thai dishes on the menu. I highly recommend the papaya salad (medium spicy or higher) and the tom yum soup. No matter how many other dishes we order, we always start with these two because they are seriously addictive. The tom yum has an amazing and flavorful broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and a variety of fish and meat proteins. The papaya salad is fresh and crispy and the lime-chili dressing is so good the bf ends up finishing it off with a spoon. I've sampled a few of the curries and some noodle dishes. I was only disappointed once when we ordered a chicken and chinese broccoli dish that was just pretty bland. Service is a bit uneven, but I have the impression that once you become a regular they'll take good care of you. I'm generally the patient type and I've never felt ignored or unwelcome here. They are always consistently busy on the Sundays we come here. They have daily specials, some of which are priced as low as $4. Prices are extremely reasonable for the quality and authenticity of the food here. I highly recommend giving them a try and I plan on becoming a regular. Cash only though, so make sure to hit up the ATM on the way here. Be prepared to drive around the block at least once for a parking spot. read more

Still my favorite Thai restaurant in all of California (Chandarette in Marina Del Rey used to be on the competition list!). My favorite is the Spicy Beef Noodle soup which is meatballs, beef (or choice of pork), bean sprouts, morning glory, pork rinds, resting on a bed of white flat noodles inside a very dark and spicy broth. Siam Sunset is a hidden little hole in the wall place on the side of the motel that specializes in serving certain Thai dishes. They have really good Chicken/rice, soup, chinese donuts, and do prepare a full Thai menu. ....everything is very authentic....and....If you're Thai and are in the mood for Thai Chicken over rice (Hainan Chicken/Khao Mun Gai) then everyone knows you gotta go to Siam Sunset.....make sure you get there early, because sometimes they run out of chicken, and because they're not open evinengs. I landed in LA for literally 40 hours and I needed a place to grab dinner. When a friend suggested that I find a place, I immediately turned to Yelp for a cheap, delicious Thai place and found Siam Sunset. Now admittedly I didn't know the neighborhood where this place was located was a bit sketchy, but I went anyway and discovered this gem. I had the pork leg over rice, which reminded me of soy sauce chicken that I'd have growing up. It was soft (almost like beef brisket, it had that fall-off-the-bone texture), slightly sweet but also salty, and it came with plenty of sauce. Add in some egg rolls, fried leek/potato rolls, and some spicy noodles that my friend ordered and two thai iced teas, and we were sitting pretty. And all for $20! Granted, I did see the po-po pull over like three people as we sat there and the bars on the door were not a great sign, but hell - this food was totally worth it and frankly we all need to accept that the world is not built around ivory towers and comfort. I do not want a local Thai food place to be expensive, but want it easy on the pocket and deelish. I heard about this spot with our Thai family community family hearsay. And I always order their rice porridge (jok) with ground pork, hold the ginger, and fried chinese donuts (very limited on some days) to go. On a good day, I'll order fried mussel omelet (hoy tod), fried tofu and some bbq pork (moo ping). Everything in this establishment is great and you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. If you're ever bored of Vietnamese Style Fresh Rolls, try our Thai version stuffed with Cucumbers, Chinese Sausages, Egg Tofu, and Beansprouts served with Jalapenos and drenched in peanut sauce. Just like mama's home cooking. Even though I am Vietnamese and this is a Thai restaurant our food can be very similar. I'm referring specifically to the hainan chicken and the porridge with pork. It's just so comforting! I've also also had their boat noodle which has a nice balance of saltiness, spice and deep beef broth. You get a feeling this is a seriously authentic Thai restaurant the moment you walk in, complete with the "hole-in-the-wall" feel, menus posted on the wall written in Thai, and large photos of the Thai King displayed prominently. Along with another place in NYC, this is some of the most authentic Thai food I have tasted outside of Thailand itself. Standouts include the fish maw soup (complete with congealed pork blood), chicken rice (khao mun gai), and shrimp paste fried rice. If you enjoy Thai food and live in a smaller city lacking authentic offerings (like myself), you owe it to yourself to try this place the next time you are in the Hollywood area. read more
