Went today after a Sunday movie, as I was intriqued by the great review in this weeks "LA Weekly". Being married to a thai, and spending no less than two months a year in Thailand I was in the mood to see if they delivered great value and flavor. I was most impresed by the hole in the wall setting in the drive in motel parking lot. Two plasma with Thai Tv and a James Bond move playing. They have like 12 items on a $3.50 value menu to start with. The Thai Tea was only $1.50!! I had the grilled pork satay with sticky rice from that menu it was fantastic. Next time I would order 4 or five. I told them after leaving that I was a new patron, as a result of the review in the local paper. I will go there again for SURE..... read more

Just had brunch at this authentic, straightforward restaurant that was quite hard to locate coz it was housed in an inn, and wasn"t expecting it. Set my eyes on a Thai breakfast porridge, but changed my mind for Thai-er options at the last minute. Menu is quite extensive, so there's still a lot to explore for my next visit. The mixed meat with Chinese sausage, crispy pork and roasted duck were fine, but a bit greasy. The green curry Thai spaghetti gave it a good balance. Flavors were on the spot -- not really hot nor overpowering. Prices are friendly, and service was fast. Definitely, one fine Thai restaurant in town. read more

How much chicken fat is in that Kao Mun Gai? My guess is lots of it and it's freakin' delicious! The ginger garlic rice, the chicken, the sauce, and broth that comes with... oh my god... I was transported back to Thailand. My bf was a hainan chicken virgin... so I took him to Savoy Kitchen in Alhambra (supposed to be famously good) I hyped him up and said hainan chicken is yummy (in general, it was my first time there too) and he was like "borrrrrring" ... special menu! $3.95 all day it's a good deal, generous portion and also taste good. : sticky rice and pork, tom yum noodle, thai spaghetti (vermicelli) with fish curry(naam ya) , thai spaghetti with green chicken curry, thai sukiyaki and etc... i love tom yum noodle and thai vermicelli with naam ya. they're very flavorful. sticky rice and pork is just o.k. pork is a little bit dry. however, as other yelpers mentioned, thai style breakfast is what you shouldn't miss. porridge is good, pork blood soup and guay jub are what you should try. esp. guay jub. you hardly find this dish in other restaurants. it's tiny roll rice noodle serve with crispy pork, boiled egg, pork, pork blood and liver in flavorful soup. also, their famous dishes are hainan chicken over rice( blcak meat is really good to me) ped kra pow(spicy mint leaves with duck)over rice. kao mu dang(bbq.pork over rice) pa tong ko(chinese doughnut) is just o.k. too oily and hard. tofu pudding in ginger soup is really good esp. in cold weather. soy milk is good.(serve cold or hot but not recommend take out order) these 3 things are kind of appetizers or desserts. salad aren't what siam sunset good at. papaya salad or shrimp salad. they're all too sweet. so not recommend. they are very busy in the morning(around 7-10) but they serve every dishes all day. service is nice. the ambiance is not good. normally i like mom and pop style but this place is a little too old and dark. overall 3.5 but this is the place that you should try. read more

This used to be one of my favorite places. Alas, time has taken its toll on this establishment. Once renowned for its noodle soups, porridges, and those authentic rare dishes you don't often see on other menus (of course, they have Pad Thai - but in addition to that they have 6 pages of other exciting offerings). The place feels dingy and I really wish they wouldn't show political Thai TV all day on their TV screen - but every time I come to LA, I always still stop by. Today I had the pork porridge with a soft egg... it hit the spot. Tofu pudding in ginger - I can't find that anywhere else... So despite the sad decor and some lackluster items (I don't think their Kao Mun Gai is as good as other places, like Sanam Luang Cafe)... I will still return. read more

I've never had Thai for breakfast before and was excited to try. Upon pulling up, the outside really doesn't look appealing but Oh-eM-Gee, the food is SOOO good. You know it is good when all the regular people prance in with their flip flops for their morning fuel looking like they just rolled out of bed. The variety on the menu was so vast, my Thai bf couldn't decide what to narrow down on so we shared: - fried donut with condense milk...interesting with the sweet milk but so crunchy and easy to eat b/c it is not long like the Chinese type - pork blood & intestine soup.....broth was good like home cooking and the blood cubes were chewy and cooked perfectly - sweet soy milk....had tapioca and other grains in the bottom of the bowl which provided a different texture. - chicken porridge....similar to the chiu chow style like rice in soup but still yummy - hot and sour soup....was only ok This will definitely be another repeat the next time I'm in lala land. The restaurant is plain and bare but the food is awesome and authentic Thai. It is in front of American value hotel. Don't be fool by the iron cage door. Just open it and let yourself in. It serves Thai style breakfast which encompass pork, shrimp, or chicken rice porridge or "joke", Kao Tom, rice with pork blood broth, Hainanese chicken Kao mun gai, egg noodle with roasted duck, and fried dough sticks with sweet condensed milk. Although my friend raved about the fried dough, I am disappointed. It is supposed to be in pair like the Chinese style fries dough or youtiao I packed slow cooked pork leg or kha moo over rice in foam box as lunch to go for my airplane ride. Big mistake. Cheap and delicious. I got the combination noodle soup bowl and it was not bad at all. Almost tried the hainanese chicken rice though. We also got the fried spring rolls, which were so goood. For dessert, we ordered shaved ice with everything on top of it. It's sweet but the portion is not huge, making the end of my meal satisfying. First Impression: Do we really have to park in this shady motel parking lot?... Even though we had to enter the restaurant through the shady motel parking lot, the restaurant, itself, was very small, clean and definitely had a mom n' pop vibe about it. It's a real no frills type of place and the emphasis, here, is all on the bomb food. As soon as we sat down, the waitress plopped down a bunch of menus that could be split into two types: the "regular" ones and the "special" ones. The special menu items were all priced at $3.95!! I decided to order a Pork Tom Yom Noodle Soup and split a plate of egg rolls with my friend. Meanwhile, a plate of Thai donuts were shared amongst us and they were amazing!!! Imagine crunchy, Chinese-style donuts dipped in condensed milk. It was the perfect mixture of salty and sweet. I savored every last bite/drop of condensed milk. As soon as my Tom Yom noodles came, I dug in. The soup was delicious! Though the special menu items are smaller than the norm, I was glad none of the toppings were skimped. The soup was perfectly seasoned and wasn't too salty. I loved the spicy saltiness mixed in with the bean sprouts, green onions and chopped peanuts! The textures and flavors were out of this world! However, the egg rolls left a little something to be desired for. As soon as they arrived at our table, I noticed the lackluster "pale" brown color to them. What egg rolls look pale?!?! They're suppose to be browned crisply and already, these looked so bland. Not to my surprise, they tasted just as bland. They had no meat inside but for $3.95 for 4 rolls, I can't complain too much. Anyway, my friends ordered a variety of porridge, noodles and curry and they all raved about them. We split the bill at the end and no one paid over $10.00 for the food they got. Amazing! Color me unimpressed. The tables are dirty. I was turned off immediately by the greasy table tops. We ordered Hainanese chicken rice, which according to Yelp, is one of their best dishes. SERIOUSLY? It was dry, bland (not in the good way that Hainanese chicken is known for), the portions were tiny and the sauce was terrible. I love a good Hainanese chicken. Siam Sunset's Hainese chicken was such a Huge disappointment. Our green papaya salad had way too much citrus. I walked out of their feeling like my teeth were going to fall off from the acidity. This place does not hold a handle to any of the restaurants in Thai Town. It's also cash only, which is obnoxious. read more

I love this place for Yen-ta-fo! Its the best I can get outside of Thailand. I've tried the papaya salad here and it wasn't so great so I'll stick with the Yen-ta-fo. The place looks like a hole in the wall and only takes cash, but thats part of the authenticity... The one thing I hate is the parking, they share a lot with a motel and it is quite cramp. Great authentic Thai food! You can drive right past it though, as it is camouflaged next to a motel the same color as it's awning. Look for it, it is worth exploring. I ordered the pork pad see yew (flat rice noodles stir fried with veggies and choice of meat) with a fried egg on top. So so delicious!!! Some places either burn the noodle or dish would lack flavor. This dish was perfection! We also ordered the Guay Chup (stew of internal organs with flat rice noodles). It's not for everyone, but for those who savors pig blood, heart, liver and intestine, this dish is a gem! The last time I had this authentic dish was over 15 years ago in Singapore. What a treat!! It's always a good sign when you look around and see a full room of Thai speaking customers who seems to be regulars of this place. It can get very busy but food comes out fast. Can you say YUMMY? If you want real Thai food, you will totally love this place. It's like home grub for Thai people. Jok with Pa-Tang-Go! It is a classic treat for my friends and I when I stray away from the OC. Note: They close for dinner so don't plan a dinner unless you go earlier in the day...like "linner". The soy bean milk is good too, but it's more of a dessert, not a drink. Also, the Tofu dessert is yummy too - its made in the Thai-Chinese way. Parking can be a pain because they share the lot with an inn. Another helpful landmark is that it's accross the street from the 99 cents store. read more

I went here with some friends straight after the 6 hour bay area to LA drive overnight. We got to the LA area in the morning and were starving. I pull up the Yelp Pre app and typed in Breakfast. This place had the best overall reviews in the area... and none of us had ever had Thai for breakfast before. The reviews were good, so why not? We go in and we were probably the first customers of the day. The place doesn't look like anything fancy, but it's clean and the staff are friendly. It took us a little while to decide what to order since we were completely new to Thai breakfast. I saw other reviews mentioning the porridge and Chinese donut. I order a shrimp porridge and Chinese donut. I'm thinking, this sounds like what you can get at a Chinese restaurant. It IS similar, but there are some differences. The porridge is pretty basic, but it's good and the shrimp was good. The Chinese donut is shorter than the ones you'll get in a Chinese restaurant, but it was freshly friend, crispy and delicious. I haven't had them with condensed milk before, but it was really good. I would definitely come back here again the next time I'm in town. I know, I haven't been going to Thai restaurants lately, but I really haven't been in a mood to try new places without someone going there themselves or if someone from Yelp said it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. A new friend of mine decided that he was hungry around 7 AM, and wanted some Thai breakfast. Still a bit groggy, I was confused as to what time restaurants open at this time of the day. (I'm usually up around this time on the weekday, but when you have family drama in your head and lack of sleep weighting down your eyes, you think Friday is the new Saturday.) He told me there was a Thai place nearby that he wanted to take me, so being the breakfast eater I am, I decided, sure why not? We found this little hole in the wall, next to a chain motel and my friend told me to park in the motel parking lot. Note to ANYONE who decides to go here, park on the street, unless you're somehow Houdini and can squeeze into tight spots and somehow get out of them without hitting another car. (I think Houdini's spirit was with me that day.) First thing I noticed, the restaurant is open at 6 AM. You don't see that kind of time written on restaurant schedule everyday. Seems like my friend goes here a lot and just grabbed us a table and menus, as I sat down and embraced the culture of Thai. Not knowing a lick of Thai, I just let my friend ordered and decided to get whatever he was getting, just without any pork guts in my congee because it is WAY too early for me to eat that kind of thing. First thing that came out, the Chinese donut. Now, I'm used to the long semi-hard ones you can pick up from Chinatown in a bag for like under 2 bucks. But these were short and fat, served with a white creamy sauce which I found out later was sweetened condensed milk. Huh, a different twist to something that I normally eat. But I was happily munching away the donut and the sauce that I forgot that I could have saved half of it for my congee. Oops. Our congee came out after, with flavor already in it. I have to say, it's comparable to Mom's own congee. You can barely feel the rice texture in the porridge, nice big chunks of meat and a dash of ginger, green onion along with a drop of soy sauce. I was surprised that I didn't need to add anything to it, while my friend added some soy sauce. The only difference from this porridge was that it came with a soft-boiled egg, with the yolk still runny. Now, I'm not a big fan of runny eggs, and that I'm not used to having something like that in my congee (I'm used to the boiled salted duck egg floating around), but I still cracked it and mixed it in with my porridge, because hey, the porridge is hot, it should cook out the yolk a bit. Bill came under 10 bucks, which I was pretty amazed. And my friend said that this is authentic as you can get with a Thai breakfast. It's like a little hole in the wall restaurant next to a motel. Service isn't that great. They tend to make you wait a long time, and They only accept Cash. Best Best Best Yentafo (Pink Noodle soup). It's very authentic. They use Onchoy and they even put the blood cube in there! (Okay, I'm not a fan of the cube, but I have a friend that have been searching everywhere for Yentafo that actually has the cube in it.) I'm Thai, and I have tried a lot of thai restaurants, and I always find myself craving food from Siam Sunset. Most of the dishes here are very good. read more

Ive been yelping around to find places in LA that serve Hainan chicken rice...and this place was close by so i finally places a to go order...to see what this stuff was all about. first off.. this place is really hidden and connected to a hotel. it was hard for me to figure out where the entrance was, until i saw handful of hip yet business-y thai men walking towards a hidden door in the back. Felt a little akward since i was random white girl rolling into this little hidden thai spot..but the people working there were cute and friendly., handed me my food....only 8 bucks for Hainan chicken and an order of chinese donuts! ok so lets talk about the food. the chinese donuts were fatty doughy and good. but i was pretty disappointed when i discovered they did not included the condensed milk for dipping. instead, they gave me a clear flavorful savory broth. it was good. i ate one or two dunked in the broth then sprinkled the others with powdered sugar. next, i tried the Hainan chicken. i was given one sauce.. that seemed to be a combination of the "famous" trio of sauces traditionally served with the dish. spicy gingery and bold. the chicken was good too.. but im not sure if the whole.. gelatinous fatty skin thing is really for me. I know thats the whole schtick of the dish, but i think i thought i would be more into it. the rice was SO flavorful. really really tasty. im excited about eating the leftovers later. read more

It's hard to find a Thai Restaurant which actually has "street food". This place had all my favorites from when I was in Thailand. Food overall was good. Kao Kah Moo - tender and flavorful Kao Mun Kai - rice was not prepared correctly - sauce was good Patanko - not bad Jok - just right I wish I had a larger stomach to eat more of the large portions. I love this little hole in the wall restaurant. LOVE! The location and the decoration leave MUCH to be desired but the prices are cheap, the hours are great, and the food is delicious. My favorite is the Hainan chicken with dark meat. This is the first place I've ever had this dish so I don't have much to compare it to but the flavors are so good and comforting. As a Filipino, I would says it's slightly similar to Arroz Caldo but better. I also did come here early one morning when I was sick to order some of the ginger tofu soup. Couldn't help but order some of the chinese donuts with condensed milk also. Just try it! read more

Pork Pad Kee Mow (spicy Noodles) and Thai iced Tea. This was my second time at the restaurant and it seems pretty authentic. I ordered my spicy noodles "very spicy" and i was crying at the first bite. Theres quite a bit of flavor in the dish to accompany the excruciating pain, and the thai iced tea does its job to cool down your mouth. My table also got some pad thai, green curry, yellow curry, and rosted duck over rice. All dishes were well prepared, and the prices are cheap. Thanks for a great meal. read more

Completely authentic. I had basically given up on American Thai food (and Thai food is one of my true loves), but this place restored my faith. It was by no means perfect (one of the dishes we tried was pretty bad in fact) but overall it tasted like it should. Most of the stuff I've had in LA has been overly sweet, and kind of insipid, but the dishes we sampled were the right blend of hot, fragrant, savory, and yes sweet. The barbecue pork was pretty terrible. But I've gotten over that. The bamboo shoot salad wasn't hot enough, but was a pretty interesting larb-like thing - more earthy than the chicken version. The boat-noodle soup was great: fat noodles, and some kind of (maybe hoisin?) broth. The tom ka kai was magic. The straw mushrooms were tender, the sweetness was balanced just right, and the heat was great. I still don't understand how something can be so intensely flavoured, yet still taste so delicate... And the pork leg with hot basil (?did they mean holy basil?) was a treat. Slow cooked, soy and sweet, it was flavourful and delicious. A great winter meal. I need to go back and try my holy trinity of larb, som tam (papaya salad), and pad thai. Pad thai has been a total disappointment to me in LA, and if Siam does it well they might just get an upgrade to 5 stars. (The pork blood soup looks pretty tempting too.) read more

We stopped by for the Chinese donuts (they were out of it) and the tofu pudding. Overall, the interior is your standard Asian restaurant. Not super clean but passable, simple and straightforward decor, and your standard tables and chairs. The tofu pudding was good, but I felt like the soup was extremely too gingery. The ginger spice overrode the rest of the dish that I forgot the tofu pudding. read more

MAKE SURE YOU BRING CASH! There's not that many authentic Thai places in SD that have the wide variety of a menu as this place does (or at least none that I know of...). After reading encouraging review on yelp, me and the girlfriend decided to stop by for breakfast before heading out to Universal Studios. The Chinese donuts were pretty good. I ordered the duck porridge, hoping that it would be similar to the filipino dish arozcaldo, and it was! Our portions were so big, in order for us to not puke all over the simpsons 3d ride we decided to save the rest for later. Everything was washed down my throat with a sweet refreshing drink called Longan juice. I don't exactly know what it is, all I know is that it had canned Lychee fruit in it, and it had a sweet, syrup like taste. Thank you Siam Sunset. I love you guys. read more

I love their Jok. It's the best I have had since my time spent in Thailand. It's one of those dishes I saw all over the place in Bangkok, yet cannot seem to find in Los Angeles. It's great -- really it is. The reason for the two knocks. 1) parking is horrible, absolutely atrocious. This place is right in the lobby of a Motel, but the parking in the area is a joke. 2) the interior, all though whole in the wall feeling (which I REALLY don't mind at all) feels a little too dirty. I have gone a few times and each time the tables are sticky and the seats are questionable, especially the bench seats. 3) Cash only. It's generally cash only all over Thai town, but I still hardly walk around with cash. All in all, Hainan chicken is good -- but the JOK is amazing. read more

I went back and tried the tum yum noodle soup. It was delicious. Definitely not yum yum soup but more like yum yum influenced. If you want noodle soup with yummy clear tasty broth--you cannot go wrong with this. Especially for $4! Also tried the meat combo and wasn't a fan. It didn't have a lot of meat and was dried out. I also didn't like the sauce that came with it. However, it was a lot of food for under $10. Plus had some veggies on the side so I'm glad I tried it. I ordered some items to go and they packed it really well. Unfortunately, it was sitting in my car for a few hours so I had to throw it away - doh! This is the cheapest Thai food in town with decent food. I go here for the $3 menu :-) I like the noodle soup and sweet tofu. All the lady here treat me really nice. I think it's a family owned restaurant. They closed at 8pm. read more

From the decor to the food presentation, Siam Sunset absolutely makes me homesick. Yeah, I'm from Thailand, and this is how we do it! Whenever I go down to LA, if it's in the morning, it will be my first stop. Siam Sunset serves all types of authentic Thai breakfast - the mini Thai style Chinese donut (For Thai style, we make the donuts small.), soy bean milk sundae, etc. I love them all. They got a pretty good deal on the special menu of $3.95. On the special menu, the food portions are smaller, but not too small. The portions can still fill up my stomach pretty well. The only downside is probably the duck. My friend had it once, and it tasted kind of old. You probably want to watch for that. Anyway, this place is worth trying. Location is a bit off, next to a rather dodgy motel, but the atmosphere was quite welcoming. Operated by Thai Chinese, full of photos of their King et al., and patronised mainly by Thai migrants, always a good sign of course. Was curious about the Chinese donuts, so we gave it a try, turns out that it is one of those fried pastries that a lot of northern Chinese eat for breakfast, although not with condensed milk dippings, as was the case here. Still, it was very nicely fried, and not oily at all. Had Hainan chicken and Papaya salad, chicken better than the salad, being tender and flavourful. There was too much cabbage in our salad roughly chopped, but the Papaya bit was quite okay. Mine was the boat noodles, it was quite alright, a little salty perhaps, but more than washed out by the fantastic Thai iced tea (really well done here). My friend ordered some pinkish-looking soup noodle which he swore was quite nice, but I wasn't really convinced by the colour. Oh well. All in all, not a bad place at all. I can't believe this place has less than 130 reviews! I've been coming here for over 10 years! I moved to Las Vegas for 8 years now but I stop by Siam Sunset every time I visit! Most thai people know about this place. Even the thai people in Vegas (those that visit cali) know about this place! Everything is just really good. Jok is the perfect consistency and the hainan chicken will definitely not disappoint. Bbq pork with rice has perfect meat to rice ratio. Soy milk reminds me of Thailand's soy milk with delicious little goodies at the bottom of the cup. Chinese donuts is a must have! Super cheap, why not? Food was a 5, but minus one for service I ordered the shrimp paste fried rice and it was soo good! On top there was egg that was super fluffy, but crispy, sweet pork (it's crispy but tender), cucumbers and green apples. I didn't care much for the sauce on the side because I felt the dish was salty enough. I tried adding a little bit and it made it too salty for my taste. But without it was perfect. For me it was the perfect combination of salty and sweet. I highly recommend this dish! I also ordered the fried doughnuts with condense milk. We ordered donuts to start with but the waitress told us there was none left. Then a group of 6 was seated next to us 10 minutes later and they ordered the same fries doughnuts that I thought they have ran out of. So we asked for some. And sitting at the corner seat, made it very hard to flag the waitress down. But after a while we were finally able to order those doughnuts. These doughnuts were so good I forgot to take a picture of them before I began eating them! They're super fried and crunchy on the outside but super soft and moist on the inside.
