March 2022 update... Perhaps it is time to paint the bathroom? I prefer the lattes but time sometimes only allows for drip coffee...the drip is often served how shall I say 'not hot' since by the time they slosh the water into the pour over and into the cup and add cream it has cooled off...I like pour over fine but I like hot coffee served hot even more. 7 or 8 years ago, this place was a nice neighborhood cafe to have a coffee, have a breakfast, and hang around. Now they are not the same. Last Saturday morning, I went there and ordered cream cheese and veggies with cinnamon and raisin bagel to go. I waited for 11 other customers for a barista to start my bagel. I thought about canceling my order. Thank God, 11th customer who was white male ordered bagel as well. Right away, one of the female baristas started his bagel and mine. What does this mean for you? When I brought back the bagel at home, cream cheese was not really there and the bagel was not even cinnamon and raisin. Bad customer service, wrong order, terrible execution. I suspect that racial issues are going on this place. But if you're white, you'll be fine. You'll have a good time, keep support them. read more

My wife and I were booked to perform on the first ever comedy show at Simple Pleasures Coffee. It was ourfirst time there, and the place is awesome. First and foremost the staff is super friendly and welcoming, great art and decor, free wifi but here's the kicker I ordered an iced carmel latte with soy and it may very well have been the most delicious (and most beautiful) cup if coffee in my life. The staff are friendly, service is fast, and they have an impressive range of food and drinks. I personally love their Chai -- unlike other Chais that are more sweet than anything else, theirs is well-spiced and so good. More than that, they aren't just a cafe -- they're a community hub. They host weekly Open Mic and monthly Trivia Nights (special shoutout to MC Rick!). It's always a fun time and a great way to meet neighbors and make new friends, plus their trivia prizes are almost exclusively merch/gift cards for other local businesses -- it's just so special and just really highlights their commitment to uplifting the community. A Coffee House that's been around for Decades , and has only gotten better through time , is a reason to add a stop along Balboa as a part of a morning routine. Just popped in here early Monday for a hot coffee. They had some nice background jazz music playing over the speakers and cozy little seating areas for everyone. I got a cafe mocha, which was essentially a fancy hot chocolate with coffee in it but oh man it was good and frothy. I can say it was intentionally made with care. The roommate was picking up dinner nearby. We weren't in the mood for the same thing, so I decided to wander into Simple Pleasures for a bagel. It was Monday, February 29th at 6:15pm. Went with the Bagel w/lox on Onion: smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion & tomato ($6.95), add Capers (+$0.50). There were a couple people before me who also ordered food items, so I had a little bit of a wait. The cashier was friendly and the atmosphere of the cafe was very lively and fun. I didn't stick around to absorb the vibe as I took my bagel home to eat. The bagel wasn't very good. It was hard with a stale chew. No doubt from sitting outside all day. But still, I've kept bagels for a few days and still managed to make them soft and chewy after toasting. Don't know what happened here. There also wasn't very much lox on the bagel. I found it odd I was charged for capers as lox normally comes with capers. I guess since they charged me, they felt I had to get my money's worth? Holy moly, was there an overload of capers! There were so many, they kept falling out as I ate the bagel. It would have been better if they just included a few capers with the bagel and charged more for the bagel and lox. I once came here 10+ years ago for breakfast. Got a bagel and lox, coffee and read the paper. It was nice way to start my day. I also remember the food being better. Based solely on this last experience, I'd say stay away from their bagels at night. But as a place to hang out and have a few drinks, this looks like a fun place. Note: They're cash only! read more

Those residential blocks on Balboa just before Ocean Beach can sure feel nippy... and not because I was there (...rimshot, please!). Enter Simple Pleasures Cafe which offers a retro-vintage vibe starting with the name which reminds me of that song from "Pippin"...not Simple Pleasures but what was that title again? Oh yes, 'Simple Joys'... Sweet summer evenings, hot wine and bread Sharing your supper, sharing your bed Simple joys have a simple voice: It says why not go ahead? Those hippy-dippy lyrics fit this space, too, except the part about sharing your bed. After all, I don't know you. Edit: Multiple reviewers here have mentioned racial discrimination. As a foreigner but not a person of color, I can't comment, but I've certainly was made to feel very unwelcome by their staff. I suspect they only prefer one type of patron: White hipster. If you're not anything like that, then they treat you like earwax. Ok, my review: Place is physically dirty and cramped. Pastries are old. Coffee is overextracted. All of that I'd forgive except some of the more recent hired staff are shockingly unbelievably rude. This is a place for the same ten locals to hang out. If you're not a certain type of local, they treat you like dirt. No matter how well you tip, or how often to you patronize their place. It's not a public facing establishment, it's more like a hang joint for some clique and the food and service just happen to be there out of force of habit. Two blocks further west on the south side of the street there's another cafe with more sane operations and more broadminded attitudes towards people of all backgrounds. They close at 5 and Simple Pleasures stays open later. That's the only reason why I kept going to Simple Pleasures, but after a most recent insult, I give up. So many choices to sit down and have a drink with my favorite person in the world. But with a name like Simple Pleasures and yelpers two thumbs up. It was an easy choice. Sometimes the customers do represent the business as well. In this case some 30 something cool looking couples were sitting outside enjoying their coffee. Not to mention a cool pooch. A new daddy pooch at that! We heard that he became a dad 6 times over!:) It's a dream of a coffee shop for me. Dark wooden communal tables, the easy smiles from the staff, beer on tap and a super duper chai that was made extra spicy by Jacob. He's the bartender/ coffee aficionado. Very friendly guy! But very efficient! Love the floor pattern. I'm finding out more and more that I'm very excited when I see nice floors. Designs and colors and a great thought obviously are almost always reserved for the four corners of any rooms and darn the floor! Not this place. Come for the floor maybe? I've been coming here for months to almost a year for my coffee in the mornings. Today there was this tall girl with red hair and tattoos that was taking orders. I get it if you want to catch up with people who come by the cafe but you got a business to run and people who start waiting and they have jobs they need to get to as well. She starts chatting it up with this customer as the line builds up. Finally, I can order (after 20 minutes - and I was next in line). I order 1 Americano (MEDIUM) and a plain bagel with cream cheese. She gave the order to the customer before me for free (which again, is cool... and I get it). When I come up she gives me the BITCHIEST attitude and when I finish paying, I waited another 10-15 min for my coffee. She GAVE EVERYONE ELSE THEIR COFFEE (maybe up to 3 people after me) BEFORE ME. I'm there with my bagel already in hand, waiting for my americano. Finally she starts making my Americano after she takes EVERYONES order. When she makes mine she give it to me in a size SMALL and then she SLAMS THE COFFEE in front of me spilling coffee all over the counter top. I was not in the mood to cause nothing on a Monday morning. I grab napkins and I END UP CLEANING THE COUNTER TOP. OVERALL... GREAT coffee. TERRIBLE TALL RED HEAD SERVER. The pros are obvious, this is a local roasting company and not a big Corporation such as Starbucks or Pete's. The cons are that the tables and chairs are usually filthy, the breeze does have somewhat of an attitude, and the coffee is quite dark and strong. There's no middle ground. The food is hit-or-miss the egg salad sandwich I thought was stale tasting, and their bagels tasted like they were A-day old. I want to support local businesses but not when the coffee and the food isn't that great. read more

Been going to this joint on a weekly basis for numerous years. Coffee swings between 3 to 5 stars depending on who makes it. Love the staff and the vibe. While the coffee is priced the same as Starbucks and less tasty, I prefer to go here because supporting small biz is to my preference. Whoever set up their wifi needs to really rework it because it simply doesn't work. It blocks out 90% of websites. Using cell tower reception inside is also a disappointment because it's one bar. read more
