This is hands down my favorite coffee shop in San Francisco, which is huge and noteworthy for a couple reasons: 1. I have insanely good, even epic taste and my opinions currently matter much or will in the very near future and 2nd, I genuinely love this city and coffee so placing SP on the top was years in the making. I had to research the s-h-I-tut out of dozens of coffee shops. They've a very cozy couch next to a comfortable looking piano and it's bench. Usually a couple locals in the Autumn of their lives studying what looks to be MATH!!?? Generally they've got good tunes piping out the speakers. Obligatory photographs on the walls depicting happy moments in the owner's lives and customers having good times. The coolest light fixture/ceiling fan ever invented. And welcoming locals that choose not to make a visitor to the Richmond, like me, feel unwelcome. It's the kind of good-vibe joint you can tell is the setting of all kinds of happy stuff, the kind of place that is colored by the good that inevitably happens there. Been coming here for years, finally leaving a review. One of the last beating hearts of old San Francisco. Bohemian in all the best ways: its not the same experience every time because each time its personalized. For some people that want everything in the city to be treated like a corporate UI experience that might be a problem but if you're looking for an San Francisco business with San Franciscans serving San Franciscan coffee then maybe try a place that's been around since 1978! Walk in and the staff (and the customers!) always welcome you like you're part of a community because you really are. No faked corporate smiles! If that's what you want try and see if Starbucks will get you a delicious hummus and veggie bagel and a latte made by the guy *that roasts the beans*! Sometimes it's line out the door for an hour or so (breakfast and lunch) but you gotta know that there wouldn't be all those people there, day after day, if it wasn't for something special. Some of them must drive by other coffee shops (there's like 4 within two blocks) but always choose here. Come by again in the evening after work for some of the cheapest beers on draft in the Bay. Cute little cafe in the outer Richmond with a perfect parklet right outside so you can enjoy your food and coffee when it's sunny. Cozy vibe in the back with couches and arm chairs. Highly recommend the jalapeño bagel with cream cheese and veggies. And they sell whiteclaw and have a few beers on tap to go with your afternoon sammie. This is my go-to cafe this side of town. The reason it's taken me so long to review it is the conflict I've had in determining what to rate it... it's definitely worth a 5 in most aspects, but once I had a REALLY shitty experience here (asshole rude male barista, in a nutshell) that eclipses many of its better moments and deems it worthy of little more than a 2 based on that visit alone. 3 might be a fair draw, but like I said, this is my go-to, and I love it for many reasons. I guess you can't have the good without the bad, right? Survey says: 4 stars. This place has been my haven and hiding place while working on grad school applications. It has got to be the most conducive studying cafe that has ever been in existence: free wi-fi, a cozy area in the back that stays warm and well-lit but not blindingly bright, tables and chairs at the perfect height for laptop work, never too crowded, and free live jazz on many nights. Jazz soothes the soul. If you do not know the wonders a live rendition of "In a Sentimental Mood" by Duke Ellington has on an overly stressed, bruised and beaten ego, then you need to go to this cafe, immediately. Food and drink wise, this place also ranks above average. I'm a fan of the chai latte, extra spicy. I've never had any of their alcoholic beverages but know they have several beers on tap and I think some nights where they serve special cocktails. Hot and cold snacks and meals are available, though I'm betting it will be the irresistible variety of sweet confections spread out near the cash register that gets you. The frosted carrot cake or black bottom cupcake are my simple pleasures indeed. Lastly, they're reliably open later than any other cafe I know of in the city throughout the week, sans the 24-hour Starbucks on California. I've decided 11pm is the perfect time to call it a night. After reading some of the more negative reviews, I decided to update my review, which, let's face it, is over five years old, and is embarrassingly devoid of capitalization. It seems folks really dislike the cafe because you can't order a triple, no whip, soy, decaf, room on the top, hot, but not scalding, coffee type beverage without some attitude or mistakes. Well, that's about right. You want that, go find a Starbucks. Don't like the fact that you can't pay with a credit card? Go Find a Starbucks. Too busy on the weekends and takes more than five minutes to receive your food? Go find a Starbucks. Seems to me the cafe receives enough business from locals, regulars, and people that enjoy a no frills coffee shop atmosphere, that it can afford to not have you come in, order like you're the only person in the world, expect the customer-is-always-right attitude, and scoff at the people that frequent and work at a neighborhood shop. The folks here are great because they don't just cater to you because you're a customer - they treat people that are truthful in their approach, and kind in their interaction, like a friend. You want to come at them with demands and orders, and you'll get attitude. Some will say, "They're in a customer service position, they should give you service." I'm a bit surprised by the overwhelming positive reviews. The atmosphere and setup is very cool, like something you'd expect in Seattle/Portland or maybe even in the Mission. High ceilings, dark wood, elaborate chalk board menu, and what looks like a full bar next to their espresso machines. The staff sport dyed hair and tats and the patrons all looked artsy with their hipster clothes and Macbook Airs. We visited on a foggy Sunday morning and there were plenty of people enjoying what looked like pretty amazing sammies. Their pastry game also seemed on point (definitely not made in-house though). With that said, there's something grungy about this place that wouldn't make me feel comfortable eating there. We were also standing around for about 2 minutes because no one felt like asking us what we would like to have. The people behind the bar, save the baristas making drinks, just stood there like zombies. The owner finally noticed this and went up to the register himself to take our order. He was nice enough but everyone else seemed miserable. Americanos are my go-to drink but the one here was mediocre at best and very expensive for the amount. Their house coffee seems much more reasonably priced but I was so turned off by my drink I doubt I'll be returning here to find out. This area of Richmond doesn't boast a lot of cafes so I can see the appeal for those who live here. But Simple Pleasures simply just isn't a place I would bother taking time out of my day to check out. read more

BEFORE Yelp's hours for this cafe were updated, we stopped by at about 9:50pm thinking they were open until 11pm, as usual. The four of us started ordering drinks and snacks. After we had placed our order, a couple of us went to get comfy on one of the couches toward the back. Not once did anyone mention that their hours had changed or that they were going to close soon. We were simply handed our drinks in to-go cups and given our snacks. A few minutes later, close to 10pm I assume, one of the teen-aged employees sprung the announcement on us. You could imagine our surprise when we had literally just sat down with all of our items and were planning to relax a while. Most of the other cafes we frequent would have informed us at the start that they had changed their hours, were planning to close, or that we could stay a little while as they finished closing up, but no...we got kicked out. And my gf had been coming here for some time. If you're going to change your hours, then at least 1) put a sign up. How hard would that be? Or 2) find some more intelligent employees who are more thoughtful or considerate so that this sort of thing wouldn't happen. I don't even remember how good or bad our snacks and coffee were because were were so pissed at this situation. Thanks for nothing, guys. Simple Pleasures is a reason to visit the Outer Richmond even if you don't live there. OK, maybe you don't want to drive or bus or walk or bike all the way to 36th Avenue just to visit the epitome of the San Francisco coffeehouse, but you should want to. If you live in the city and like to complain about the fog, you should spend some time here and other places where there actually is fog. (I'm tired of people who live in the Mission complaining about the weather.) If you're looking for a fancy, sparkling clean place, you should avoid Simple Pleasures. It doesn't do fancy, and it's grimy in a completely hygienic way--except maybe for the bathroom. It's really cozy, and the food is really delicious. Most of the people who work here are nice too, which is not true at many otherwise excellent coffeehouses. Simple Pleasures's main charm, however, is its clientele, many of whom are regulars. There used to be a French guy who would sit in front and have the same argument with whoever decided to strike up a conversation with him. Now, apparently, there's a guy who likes to talk about the guns he owns. This place draws a pretty eclectic crowd; don't you want to be part of that crowd? Oh, and it's a really good place to write. UPDATE: 10/22/12 =============== It is with great sadness that I must ding Simple Pleasures a star for its bathroom's wheelchair inaccessibility. I've literally avoided using the bathroom here for years because I didn't want to face the probable truth that one of my favorite places in the city discriminates against wheelchair users. I stopped by at 6:00 a.m. when they open and got a house coffee and a currant scone - both were excellent and the service was friendly and efficient. I was drinking coffee at a table outside and it became clear that there is a group of early morning regulars, and they are a wonderful, friendly group of people as we discussed news of the day (Russia and Ukraine - uggh). They asked what brought me out so early and when I explained that I had just dropped my father at the nearby VA hospital for surgery they were so supportive. This place has been around since I was a kid. Never went in until this week - at the start of the heat wave. I went in looking for iced coffee on the menu board. There wasn't any but on a small board they noted that they sold blended drinks - fine. I ordered their version of the java chip blended. Behind the counter, the guys acted like they didn't know how to make it. I guess they didn't specialize in blended drinks. Either their blender didn't work or the guy who made the drink didn't care that the drink wasn't blended smooth. They handed me a drink with lots of ice - unblended ice. The drink was bland. There was no coffee in it at all. You can eat the chips and the ice but no coffee. For $3.50 this was a total rip off. Never again. read more

Love this place. Cool atmosphere. Lovely baristas. Good coffee. The mochas are my favorite, especially with a pastry or one of the awesome brownies. They also make fantastic sandwiches. The veggie bagel makes a great light lunch. It's often crowded on the weekend and on sunny, hot days. It also gets really crazy when there's an event going on in Golden Gate Park. Had an interview in the area and stopped by here after to relax and enjoy a coffee. I ordered a double macchiato and a warmed up croissant. Total was about $6.50 which is average. Over all my experience was okay. Service: 1.5 stars. The guy(shaved head) that took my order wasn't very friendly. You could tell he only cared about his regulars. Being a barista myself (and former manager), I know it isn't easy being friendly to everyone but he didn't even smile or even attempt to be friendly to me but to the lady after, he asked how her day was going etc, I didn't even get a thank you (I even tipped $3!). I am only giving an extra half star bc of the young, longer blonde haired, boy who was making the food. He gave me my food with a smile and you could tell he was a hard worker. Espresso: 3 stars. I had a work meeting early this morning. I knew this place has a large menu so I did not have any food before going there. As soon as I got there I ordered a bagel with cheese cream, lettuce, tomato, onions and cucumbers. I really do not have much to say about it because it is something simple to make but I did notice that the ingredients were really fresh. The employee who took the order was really friendly and got it within a few minutes, so everything went smooth. A bagel is supposed to be something really easy to make but I have had too many bad experiences in the past when I went to other cafes. I first came here nearly 30 years ago and it is has been my go-to coffee place when I moved to the area almost 15+ years ago. Recently the owners and staff helped me out in a bagel pinch (needed a bunch quite suddenly for a group of school staff) and it moved me to write a review. Been here a couple of times to study, and kind of a mixed feel to it. I like this place mostly for the atmosphere...relatively quiet, but not overly so and yet still lively enough. On some nights, they have people playing live music, but on the night I was there for it, I think it just might have been okay to turn down the volume down a bit...it's not THAT big of a joint. Can't recall too many details on the drinks, but if memory serves...the coffee overall was average, and I didn't care much for their hot chocolate. They do have beer on tap though, so that's a welcome change compared to most shops that don't even have it offered at all. Service was okay...not overly friendly like most shops I've frequented, but it's not like they failed anywhere along the way either. A coffee shop more for lounging and conversation than to take in a book or to study. I imagine it'd be perfect to come here on a mild or cold night to have a cup of joe, enjoy the music/games/cards and chat, or to sit outside on a warm night with a beer or coffee in hand...but more of a "in the neighborhood" or local spot than as a destination. read more

I really enjoyed my afternoon here, quietly reading my book with bagel and coffee with natural light streaming through the back windows while my husband was working on a project with his colleague a few tables over. The name of the cafe is apt. It's simple, and it's a pleasure to be there. No Chemex nonsense, no $9 avocado toast, no pretentious jerks who rule the weird modern cafes downtown. Just a nice, quiet, neighborhood joint filled with neighborhood people you can tell have been coming for years, the local crazy lady, and kids doing their homework. The coffee was superb!! Rich and flavorful. I appreciated the ample amount of cream cheese served with my sesame bagel. Whatever egg thingy they were cooking up behind the counter smelled sooo yummy and I was surprised to find a cafe that serves beer too! Well loved, comfy furniture dots the back of the cafe - i like the fact that you can tell this place has been around for a long time and it felt familiar to me (even though it was my first time there). Really reminded me of a lot of cafes in town before they all started making way for Starbucks and Boba Guys and Froyo joints on every corner. There's a little bookshelf if you'd like to read a book.
