Lovely dessert and dim sum spot located in West Portal! I discovered this place while searching for dessert on a Friday night, and I found Snow Bliss which offered a wide selection of food items. While we were seated immediately right before closing, the tables were more than half food with people enjoying late dinners or dessert. For my friends and I, we settled upon sharing their lychee bingsu. It was enough for a group of three people! Our order came out within 10 minutes, and it was quite colorful with its mochi and condensed milk and lychee placed on the side. All the toppings were sweet, and it was once of the few times I've tried bingsu where the ice stayed in shape the whole time and did not melt. The menu is fairly simple, and the walls were dotted eith pictures of different food items they serve. Some of them weren't even on the menu so I assume those were seasonal (like the Watermelon Bingsu). In the end we chose the following: - Beef and Tomato Stir Fry $15.99 - Lychee Bingsu $16.99 - Honeydew Fruit Tea $7 Overall: $43.43 plus tip We enjoyed the Lychee Bingsu the most and it can easily be shared between 3 people. The fruit tea was fine for the price. The beef and Tomato was good as well if you like large chunks of tomato but was odd how the stir fry was served after the dessert. It's been a while since our first visit and we wanted to give it another try. This time, hubs and kiddo ordered food - beef chow mein and salt and pepper tofu. They enjoyed the dishes. The chow mein was flavorful and the tofu came out piping hot and crispy. Based on a recommendation, I ordered the Black Sesame Bingsu that came topped with whipped cream and almonds and a side of boba and condensed milk. Get your coats ready, because Snow Bliss is the longest blizzard you'll ever experience -- and not in a good way. Snow Bliss is located in an area with semi-available parking, which makes it somewhat easy to access so you're not trekking through the Arctic tundra just to get a dessert. Upon arrival, I was surprised to discover that Snow Bliss is actually inside a restaurant that specializes in Chinese stir-fry dishes. Interesting combo -- snow and sizzling woks. When we got there, the place was packed to the igloo. I thought we'd be left freezing outside, but thankfully the staff managed to separate a table so we could sit down right away. We were given water and menus immediately, which was a good start -- but that's where the warm feelings ended. As we "skated" through the menu, we figured out what we wanted within five minutes. Then... nothing. We sat there freezing our heads off as the servers shuffled back and forth like confused penguins, each only doing one tiny task at a time. I eventually raised my hand to get someone's attention -- they saw me, acknowledged me, and still took so long that my arm froze in place. I nearly had to thaw it in the stir-fry station. I don't know who trained them to serve like this, but here's a free tip from a former server: if you have trouble remembering orders, bring a notepad. It's not that deep. Watching them bounce around aimlessly was like watching a live-action screensaver -- except slower. After what felt like the end of the first Ice Age, we finally got to order our mango bingsu. To my surprise, it actually came out fast. Hope glimmered like the sun breaking through the storm clouds... until we tasted it. The mango ice cream on top tasted like artificial disappointment, and the shaved ice had zero cream, zero flavor -- just pure frozen sadness. The texture? Chunky. Like someone shaved it with a butter knife. The only redeeming part was the fresh mango, which honestly carried the entire dessert on its tropical back. Then came the final betrayal: strawberries at the bottom of the bingsu. Strawberries. At that point, I lost all remaining respect for this operation. A flavorful salt and pepper seasoning. It was absolutely juicy and delicious. The matcha red bean bingsu came in a generous portion that's perfect for sharing. Garlic fries feels like very soggy, like it was over night and just re-heated with microwave. Beef chow fun, the beef was too chewy, not fresh at all and again the chow fun taste like it was left overnight and not freshly cooked but just heated with microwave. Mango and strawberry bingsu are way too sweet, too much added sugar. They want me to have diabetes. The inside is not very good for conversation it is open seating. The places has more 5 stars rating than Michelin Star restaurants caused me to believe that most of the 5 stars reviews are not true. The worst was all of us got diarrhea after we ate here. Even without the diarrhea, this cafe at most is 2.5 star and definitely not a 4.2 star rating. This place is way over-hyped with sub-par food, will not come back. So come here at your own peril if you want diarrhea. Don't believe all the pretty pictures show on the website. Food can't be tasted by pretty pictures. IMHO Believe it or not, a banker clued us into Snow Bliss Cafe, since she had just enjoyed a wonton noodle soup lunch here. We took her advice and proceeded to look for the establishment. At the time we didn't know the name of it, just a general idea of its location down the street. Thankfully they had a small sandwich board standing outside their restaurant advertising their specialties, Beef Chow Fun, Sweet & Sour Pork, and Wonton Noodle Soup! Dang, these are all three favorites of mine! We had our choice of tables since it was close to 3 p.m. (They are open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.!) We wanted to order take-out and sat down to peruse the menus. Wilson, our waiter, brought us three cups of water to drink while we decided what we wanted. We ordered Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet, Beef Chow Fun, Chicken Pan-fried Noodles, Won Ton Noodle Soup, and Beef Chow Mein. While we waited for our food, we chatted with one of the owners. She was very proud of her sons who help run the restaurant. Not only do they serve delicious Chinese food, and dim sum, but they also serve Bingsu, which is shaved ice. The mango bingsu tasted artificial today. And there were definitely not even 25% of mango chunks that's shown in the picture. Really sad because that's one of my favorite parts. Tofu squares are nicely seasoned but they didn't provide a satisfying crisp like the fries did. Popcorn chicken (not pictured) was fried circle balls of chicken. Good but something was off about it. My friend has been raving about this little gem of a place in West Portal for months. Not only does she enjoy the food here, she also love how nice and hospitable the owners are. Recently, we came by for lunch. I tried their beef chow fun previously via delivery, but I have to say that it is definitely better in person. So on this visit, we got their beef chow fun, delicious and portions are generous as well. The hot honey wings is a fairly new item on their menu as my friend never tried this on her many visits, so we had to try this time. It was crispy & spicy, finger licking good. We both enjoyed and would get this again. We also got some of their dim sum items such as the shrimp and pork dumplings (Siu Mai) and the Lotus Wrapped Sticky Rice. These are nice but nothing you can't get at a dim sum place. But given this is in West Portal and there are no dim sum spots nearby, this satisfies. Finally, we had to save room for dessert. My friend loves the Bingsu here and always order the strawberry one every time, so on this visit, we decided on the Lychee Bingsu. Super fluffy shaved ice with condensed milk, topped with lychee and mochi. Amazing! Street parking is available, and opens late. Went around 8pm and it was pretty busy, but seating went quickly. It came with little mochi bits and some mango syrup. The mango was so ripe and flavorful that you only needed a bit of the mango syrup. It was a very warm day and it hit the spot. The matcha bingsu was absolutely delicious and honestly one of the best I've had in a while. The matcha flavor was very strong and the bingsu was a comfortable amount of sweetness and creaminess. Unlike typical bingsu, you actually didn't have to add matcha syrup as you eat because the bingsu is already flavored. Their mochi bits were surprisingly fruit flavored too which eliminates the taste of just glutinous flour. It does come with additional condensed milk and red beans if you want but we didn't find the need to use any of it. Interior has lots of seating and restaurant wasn't too busy on a Sunday afternoon. While the snow was fluffy and flavorful our party of three simply waited too long to enjoy our visit. We thought beating the heat with some shaved ice would be the perfect treat. However our group waited maybe over 30 minutes for our two shaved ices to come out. We noticed that there was only one person working the whole front so we understand that the service was slower but mixed with the heat, it was a sweaty time waiting. We ordered the mango shaved ice which came with fresh mangos and a milk shaved ice which was refreshing but admittedly it came to our table quite melted. This was my second time at Snow Bliss, and I have to say, the customer service is great every time! This time around, we decided to go for the Strawberry Bingsu and the popcorn chicken. There were a bunch of strawberries packed in the bingsu, which we liked. However, with the sauce, it was a bit more artificial tasting than I like. The shaved ice itself had a great milky flavor, and was honestly good on it's own. The popcorn chicken was not your traditional Taiwanese-style popcorn chicken, rather, it was fried in a light batter with peppers and garlic - kind of a like a beef stir fry, but with chicken. I'm definitely a fan of this place and have added it to my lunch rotation of spots nearby. The Beef and Tomatoes rice plate reminds me so much of the simple dishes over rice I enjoyed growing up in NYC. It's one of the better ones out here in SF in my opinion. Now, if only they gave an option to add a "fried egg" on top, this would be "da bomb". The Chicken Wings are very good too and my kids just love them.
