Also, despite what it says here, this place is cash only, take out only and no restrooms or ATM nearby. I had to order the pork silog instead of the HK pork chop with rice because I only had $8 and was $.15 short. This is a San Francisco institution. For that reason alone, you should visit this place and order food. It's the only place I will go for a simple plate of Filipino cuisine. It's typically some type of grilled or fried meat over rice accompanied by an egg and some type of vegetable. Very humble, unpretentious, affordable (typically $5.50 for an over rice and sausage dish) and tasty. Always tasty in the decades I've gone to this place. I thank my lucky stars Superstar survived the misery of the last two years and is still operating. Superstar Restaurant is just a few blocks away from its sister restaurant, Gateway Kitchen. Gateway is closer to my place but since it was closed on a Monday, it was an opportunity to give Superstar a try. I was glad I did go the extra mile because I thought Superstar was a bit cleaner. I mean yeah it is small and old like Gateway but the kitchen, floor tiles and windows look cleaner to me. Anyway, I really like their HK style porkchop. It is 2 pc of porkchop that is battered and fried to crisp. For $4.75, it comes with lots of garlic rice, 1 egg and a choice of tomato or pineapple. I have tried their tocino and bangus but HK pork really is their best seller! Pork fatty crispy goodness for that once in a while cholesterol craving! One of the popular cheap eats here, and it is hard not to compare it with Gateway. The porkchop is almost exactly like gateway's it's good for its price. We like that they have a tomato option for sides. Rice is not overwhelming, which is sad for me. Tocino is good enough to satisfy a craving. It has such a nostalgic vibe to it and its places like this that are bomb as hell. My parents used to go here when they went to Balboa HS class of '97, my BF and his friends always go here, my friends, and i am the only one who has not tried the place out until my BF took me.......I am so pleased and satisfied with what i ate My bf ordered him and I the HK Style Porkchop meal which is such a hood huge portion considering youre only paying $5/$6. Hands down best place to get cheap and delicious Filipino breakfast silogs! For the uninitiated, silog is a combination of the Tagalog words sinanag (garlic fried rice) and itlog (egg). So it's a dish that includes a type of meat, garlic fried rice, and fried eggs. At Superstar they also include a side of fresh diced tomatoes. They are the perfect side to cut through the richness of whatever silog you choose. Our go to order is HK style pork chops and tocilog. Their portions are more than generous for the price. You will definitely not be hungry for another couple of hours after eating here. Their indoor dining is currently closed but they still have takeaway. The food is still as good as it was 10 years ago! I usually order the tasino plate and the pieces I received weren't the tough parts of the meat which I'm glad. The rice is good but I would say... I wish the garlic was cooked with the rice and not thrown on top of the rice.. it just tastes like semi burnt galore on top of rice lol. I love this place! Before you go, remember to bring some cash and some coins to pay for the meter on the street. The portions are HUGE for the price - it's literally hella cheap. I always go for the hong kong style porkchops with occasional side of tapa. This comes with garlic rice, an over easy egg, and you have the choice of tomatoes or pineapples. I recommend getting it with the pineapples though! You have to dip the hong kong style porkchops using the sauces provided on the table: vinegar, soy sauce, and salt/pepper. I usually just mix the vinegar and soy sauce together and it tastes sooooooo gooooooood! You shouldn't expect to enter some nice restaurant - it isn't the best in terms of cleanliness, but their food definitely makes up for it! It's a really small restaurant that seats about 10-15 people, so most people take it to go. If you do order to go and you eat it inside, they charge an extra fee. I somehow always crave Superstar when it's closed.....on Sundays. I definitely have to make a stop by here sometime soon because I haven't had it in a while and I'm craving it!! read more
