I've heard so much about superstar and I had to try it. I ordered many things based on the reviews such as Hong Kong style pork chop, chicken leg, lumpia, and longanisa. Hong Kong style pork chop: lightly breaded and deep fried but kind of bland. They gave me about 4-5 pieces and I was surprised most of them was just straight up meat. I thought there would be more bones. Chicken leg: deep fried piece of chicken leg. The one I got was way over fried so some pieces of the chicken were very dry and tough. Lumpia: small and I've have better places that are more flavorful Longanisa: juicy and soft but full of flavor! The pineapples were canned and the garlic rice was kind of bland. Overall, what's great about superstar is that you can get full off of $5 but some of the items are bland. If the prices weren't low I'd probably give a 2-3 star but the price makes it better. read more

This is a hole in the wall mom and pop eatery. Filipino and Chinese breakfast served all day. Reasonable price for portions given. Highly recommend for quick and simple breakfast specially for those who miss Filipino breakfast. A good idea to take friends and family and reminisce on good times. read more

I'm back to write a more detailed review after grabbing two plates this morning while in the city... but I still stand by my first review - this place smacks! I am super impressed with the quality you get for the price you pay. I have had to pay $18-20 for a Bangsilog/Longsilog combo further down the peninsula, but why would I do that anymore when I can get the same combo with bigger portions for less than $12?! I also enjoy the fact that here, you get the option of regular Bangus or baby Bangus. I love the Baby Bangus option. Definitely not as small as other restaurants would put out. So, so worth! And so, so flavorful - tastes just like home. The garlic rice is always steaming hot whenever I get my order. I love the over-hard egg. But my favorite part of the plate is the tomatoes and vinegar that's included with every order... how authentic! 10/10 for me! read more

My go to when I'm trying to get jiggy with $10 or less. Superstar always comes through. #14, Hong Kong Porkchops with the Garlic Rice, fried egg and tomatoes. If you feeling extra jiggy, go with some longaniza on the side. It smacks. Throw some sriracha sauce in the mix, you really feastin like a king for under $10. Haven't tried Gateway Kitchen so I can't really compare the quality from Gateway to Superstar, but you can tell this is a true staple to the Mission. Serves both Geneva and Excelsior. There's no place to eat inside so don't expect this to be dine in restaurant. Take your ass somewhere nearby, and enjoy this plate while it's hot. If your like me on foot and feeling extra hungry, I just hit Kenny Alley near the spot and start chompin' down. Be patient with your order too. Don't be weird and stare at these kind people while they're making your order. I see people doing this all the time since there is no place to sit inside. Take your ass somewhere like Safeway across the street, get you a drink or browse the munchie section. You don't have to buy anything but kill some time, come back and your order should be ready and hot. read more

Definitely a hole in the wall for this place. The large amount of food for the cheap price is definitely a steal especially with everything being so expensive these days! This place is a not-so-hidden (anymore) gem! For around $4-$7, you can get a BIG plate of protein, sunny side up egg, and garlicky rice goodness. What a steal especially in San Francisco. The prices have gone up, but it's still an insanely good deal. I usually opt for the Hong Kong style pork chop or spam silog. It's thin, crunchy, and hot. It's perfectly paired with egg and garlic rice. This is typical for us Filipinos to eat for brekkie. I love taking it home and dipping everything in Datu Puti vinegar. Filipino Breakfast = Last night's dinner with an egg and rice! Sometimes, they overcook the fried garlic bits and you get a bit of bitter flavor but you really cannot complain with the price. The service is nonexistent, but the employees are kind enough and they do their best to keep up with the orders. Just a heads up, this is a true hole-in-the-wall. Make sure you can get past the grungy, sticky-looking interior. The menu is outdated and the real menu that they offer is posted on a piece of paper closer to the counter. But judging from the line that often forms at just about any time of the day, they just might prove their success in just how much volume of food they serve. Superstar is super yummy and super cheap! I ordered the Jumbo fried chicken, which came with a giant chicken drumstick, fried egg, tomato and garlic fried rice. I love the the price and how fast my food came out! This was only $4.75! My food was literally ready in minutes! Even faster than Fast Food restaurants, to be honest! I also really enjoyed the garlic flavor of the fried rice. It wasn't too overpowering. One thing I want to mention about the chicken is that I am glad it did not have too much batter. The tomato was fresh and the egg was also delicious! I would definitely come back here again! It is so affordable and filling! I didn't like anything I ordered. I still might try it again and try other items. I ordered the HK style pork chops and milkfish. They gave me plenty of food, but I didn't like any of the taste. The pork chops didnt have any flavor on them. And they just were big globs of crispy breading on it. The milkfish was over cooked and didn't have any flavor to it either. I was hoping to have it soaked in vinegar like most places, but it wasn't. The garlic fried rice just had big pieces of burnt garlic on top of my rice. And after tasting a bite or two of each of the following, I didn't even tried the fried egg. Next time I'll just stick with longonesa or something and ask for plain white rice. Maybe I caught them on a bad day. I did notice they seem to be very popular tho cuz I watched a lot of orders being picked up. But most of them were for the fried chicken. Lol read more

You really can't beat the price here! $5 for a Tocilog with a hefty two scoops of garlic rice with a fried egg, pineapple or tomato, and a serving of tocino (sweet pork). We ordered a lot. Everyone in the house was craving some Superstar. The damage? All silogs, please! Longanisa, tocino, tapa, bangus, lumpia Shanghai...(this is the truly the most creative way to describe all the ages in our family haha). I haven't had this in a while, but this mornings order was not hitting the spot. Usually that fried egg is super crispy on the edges and the tocino is sweet and the garlic is garlicy. Today, we had pretty blan dishes. Honestly, this was more of a 2 star but I gotta give it 1 extra star for holding it down on having affordable pricing and all the other times we had no issues. I might give it another try, but today just wasn't hitting the spot. Street parking along mission isn't too bad these days and everyone there is nice. The place is quaint but clean. The restroom wasn't open to the public but when we asked where the nearest restroom was, the lady moved the table out of the way for us. They were out of the bangus and fried chicken. I bought the pork chop and chicken wings both with egg, garlic rice, and a small side of pineapple. The pork chop wasn't dry and it had a nice batter to it. The chicken wings were cooked to perfection. The garlic rice complimented both very well and the pineapple was a nice palate cleanser. What can I say? This place is a neighborhood staple! I have been coming to this place since middle school, cheap and great eats. You can fill your belly without emptying the wallet. Some favorites here are the hong kong style pork chops, boneless bangus, tocino/longanisa and of course they all come with an egg and garlic fried rice. This place has and is a true gem on the neighborhood. Great honest people working here and running it as well. I will forever support them. I would never think that it would be possible to get a full size meal for only 5.25 anywhere near San Fran. That was until I found this place. Food is great and prices are unreal. The facade is old, there is some graffiti and the thick windows made it difficult to see inside during the day. once I opened the door, I saw a thriving business, filled with Tiyos and Tiyas cranking out Filipino comfort food and a wide array of patrons patiently waiting for their order. The longsilog was a highlight of my time in the area and my wife raved about the butterfish. The highlight was one of the Tiyos walking to the cashier from the kitchen with a question, we made eye contact and nodded. We were both flying a Dodger cap deep behind enemy Giant lines. I went in today to get a plate for me and my son after we did his orientation for school. We got there at exactly 9 AM. They just opened so I would've expected food to be fresh. I got the tapsilog and the meat tasted like it was leftover from yesterday! It was grainy and dry. I know what leftovers taste like! I would recommend you stick to what needs to be made to order if you want fresh but consult your cardiologist first lol! Went to SF for my husband's birthday and to visit with my family. It was a weekday and my brother-in-law picked us up at the airport at 9am as we caught the first flight out to SF. BIL asks if we want to go to brunch, "there's this whole-in-the-wall place that I go to all the time, its CHEAP and its really good too!" He's saying all the right things and of course, we're in, plus this gives us quality time to spend with him before he drops us off at his house to run errands. Because of the time of day, we make it from the airport to the restaurant in 15-minutes. Street parking is the only option as this is a neighborhood joint. People walk from their homes, school and nearby businesses to feast here. Because this is BIL's frequent stop, we park at the Safeway across the street and like city folk, we jay-walk. So we walk in and I look up at the menu and exclaimed how cheap it was as the lunch special beef broccoli was only $3.75! So my BIL was like, no you can't order from there, order from here and points to the menu on the front window of the counter. Which was still a good deal. I opted for the longanisa plate at $3.75 while my BIL got bangus (fish) and my husband got the tilapia plates. Including, coffee, our bill was $17. Cash is king here. Service was quick. My husband went to the market next door to check it out and in less than 2-minutes, our meals were delivered. And the food was good too. I've never had a sliced tomato with longanisa before. Of course my BIL enjoyed his meal as he orders it all the time and my husband did a great job of digging into the tilapia as they serve the entire fish. But I still wondered why I couldn't order from the menu up above. My BIL says that the menu has been hanging there for the past 30-years and through the different owners. They just haven't taken it down or removed any of the menu items or the prices. It's quirky but makes for a good story. My BIL told us that this place gets busy at lunch because the high school kids at the school nearby come here for lunch. And sure enough, 10:30 am, 8 people came in all at the same time. The restaurant is small, so the 8th person in line stood at the very entrance of the restaurant. If a 9th person came, they would be standing in line outside the entrance. The city in the older suburb areas has many of these type of restaurants. This certainly made for a great start to this visit to SF. read more

I should have known by the dirty run down interior and poor service that this place wasn't going to be very good. I still don't know how a place like this services in SF for 33 years. They can't be making much money with their low prices and crappy food. I love Filipino food but this was not it. The pork silog pork chops were dry as a bone with little flavor and the egg was overcooked. The rice was also meh. Also, despite what it says here, this place is cash only, take out only and no restrooms or ATM nearby. I had to order the pork silog instead of the HK pork chop with rice because I only had $8 and was $.15 short. Pick any other restaurant in the area and you will probably get better food than this. read more
