The toppings were simple (crunchy wasabi peas, bean sprouts, carrots, and salmon) but I wasn't super duper impressed by the amount of salmon and the quality bamboo rice. I feel like I was super overhyped about the rice and thought it was going to be AMAZING but I thought the rice was super mediocre. Try this place last Friday for the first time and I like it. Got most of the toppings and more, I got the large which is good portion, small is like a snack size in my opinion or if you got something else, or unless you really are not hungry. Staffs are nice and patient to explain to me how the menu works since it's not the most clear regarding the 5 extra toppings you can pick if you order one of their signature bowl. But other than that it's pretty standard poke bowl menu. And I did the half and half fish since all their menu comes with only one fish. Also try the half and half base as well. When I'm craving poke I either come here or sea salt since Hoke Poke on 8th and Hope closed. I feel like there's been such a recent explosion of poke shops that we can all be more discerning. It reminds me of the fro-yo shops 10 years ago and how only the few, REALLY good ones lasted. I wonder if the same will happen with poke.... but I digress! This is probably my least favorite poke shop. The layout of the store is clean, minimal, and fast food-ish. Sweetfin offers several specialty bowls, or you can pick your own. The very friendly cashier recommended her faves. I got a small salmon bowl with a base of half citrus kale and half kelp noodle-cucumber slaw, avocado, fried onion, cucumber, edamame, and seaweed salad. Although there is a long list of toppings, you can only choose 5, and most of them weren't really things I like in my poke. The really good ingredients were $1 extra, and this is the only poke place that charges for masago. It's also the only one I've ever seen where they don't make the bowl in front of you. I don't know why it took as long as it did, but after waiting a while, I was handed my tiny, $10 bowl. There must have been about 6 small pieces of salmon in my bowl. Honestly. It was the worst portion I'd ever seen. I don't know why they call it "poke" when it was just a really overdressed salad with a few pieces of fish thrown on top. Everything was really fresh and tasted great together. But.... no fish. I feel like I could have gotten more actual fish on a $10 salad elsewhere.... but a poke restaurant? So disappointed. So I'll second what most folks have said. Tasty, but smallish bowls, and lots of the toppings cost an extra $1 per topping (like avacado). I also love spicy tuna and some places chop it really fine and mix it with the spicy sauce--yum--but they don't do that here. Another minor peeve: each box only comes with 5 of the standard toppings, but there are at least a lot of choices (edamame, seaweed salad, eggplant, crispy garlic or onions, ginger, etc.). You can also have two sauces mixed in and one of the side. For the base you can choose between white or black rice, greens, or noodles. Finally, if you come to eat at the actual shop, the wait is a little long because they are processing so many to go orders. This place gets pretty packed at lunch and is a little different from other poke places. I feel like it's the capitalistic version, if that makes sense. First, you dont get to have them prepare your bowl as you go through the line. You wait in line, them what you want, then wait for it to be prepared. We got take-out, ant was good but not great. I didn't think the albacore was all that good in terms of freshness I was expecting being in LA and they really did t give you a lot for your money. Disgusted by the customer service at this location. I walked in at 8:25pm and asked if they were open, the two working behind the counter said yes. I begin to order and they rudely told me to go to the kiosk, I've never visited the location and didn't automatically know to order there. I inputted my order in the kiosk and when I was ready to pay the kiosk abruptly changed screens and read "SORRY WE'RE CLOSED." I begged the employees to help me and they said - no were closed everything is closed. When clearly the line was still out and they could have fulfilled my order. I didn't put up a fight, I was gracious but confused. Why wouldn't they have told me they're closing soon and to hurry? Or at least given me the heads up when I asked as soon as I stepped in, and I asked if they were open? So rude, so disrespectful, so inconsiderate. I heard the hype with their newest menu launch --SweetBox, and let me say it did not disappoint! I hate to spoil what's in the box but to highlight-- it comes with Yuzu Salmon over citrus kale and Spicy Tuna over Bamboo Rice. So flavorful!! Was really impressed with the bit of Macadamia and Tuna I got at the event so I went a few days later. Got a small size and was disappointed for the amount of fish I received. It was primarily packed with all the sides, which were good, but I really wished there were more poke since it is fairly tasty! Sadly, it didn't hit the spot but filled me up nonetheless. The workers seemed distracted and more interested in their convos than helping me. The counter was alllllll the way at the end. A little unconventional and confusing when you first walk in. You can also make your own bowls or opt for ones that have been preset. Overall, the poke is tasty. Sides are good. Price is decent. Just not sure if I'd be a regular here as there are others in the area that serve a little more poke and give you a better bang for your buck! read more

While some may not prefer the size of the bowl (as it is a little smaller than most poke places), I like the size a lot and believe the flavor, ingredients and taste is a lot stronger and tastes more like Japanese cuisine rather than Hawaiian, or California Poke style. Everytime I've had it this for I've enjoyed it but this time I saw something in my uber eats bowl that was unsettling. This most recent bowl I got came with noticeably overripe avocados and I didn't even have to sift through the bowl to see how much brown spots were in the whole entire bowl of poke in which it costs an extra dollar to add avocado... For a place the raves about local and fresh ingredients and charges a lot of extra fees for additional sides I would have preferred to see a fresh avocado but was left with polka dotted avocados in my poke bowl. read more

This chain is one of the few that doesn't show the process of your bowl being made. Instead, you have to order everything at once including the toppings - the whole enchilada. Anyways, I had the Blue Madonna - which is their current special. It's typically made of "Albacore, Golden Beets, Green Dragon Apples, Avocado, Gold Edamame Shoots and Curry Toasted Slivered Almonds with a Forest Berry Anise Ponzu over Forbidden Rice and garnished with a Borage Blossom." Sounds like a little bit of everything right? Yeah, I know. I couldn't really tell what was going on. The edible flowers did taste like furry caterpillars though. And it did win an award for most expensive poke bowl I've ever had in my life. That said the ingredients seem fresh, the bamboo rice and kelp noodles are fun, and the space is contemporary & comfortable. The restaurant was empty at 7pm on a Thursday so I didn't feel bad taking forever to order and ask questions. My tip: get the biggest size foe $13.50. Sweetfin was at Smorgasburg and they only had perhaps three food choices on their menu which is fine because at events this size it's better that way--note, it is not as big as 626 much smaller. There was one vegetarian option but no vegan. I got the spicy tuna which also happens to be gluten free. The bowl was nice but this is coming from someone whom rarely eats meat. First time at Smorgasburg and that was my cheat choice for the week. Everyone was super friendly! Nevertheless, this restaurant doesn't just do food festivals they also have a store front in Dtla which was nearby. I took a peek at their menu and they have two vegan options in-store. One is tofu and the other is chopped veggies. I read a few Yelp reviews that the tofu is just as good as the real thing. I look forward to trying either the chopped vegetables or tofu poke bowl next time--most likely will try veggies as I would choose veggies over tofu any day. I definitely how I can customize my Yuzu salmon bamboo rice bowl to my liking. I got it through the Ritual app, it was fast and easy. I got the small and felt comfortably full. Not sure how people manage to have the large bowl, but I highly recommend just getting a small bowl. They told me they're out of ingredients and told me to deal with ritual as they aren't liable for the charge and refused to let me speak to a manager and ignored me. I asked for proof that they canceled my order so I have proof to show ritual I did not pick up the order and it was not made. They refused and said it's not their problem, despite them saying they completed my order and it was picked up. This is blatant fraud. They then allowed me to stand in line for an additional 30 minutes and told me the manager won't waste his time to speak with me because they auto accepted my order and blamed the app and didn't even offer to either adjust my order or offer some other way to work with me. I was a bit apprehensive to order from Sweetfin given the negative reviews on the order not being correct. Nevertheless, I got poke and it was great!! I couldn't really taste the white truffle oil in my bowl, so not sure if it was there or not, but I was happy with the end result. I knocked down a star because there is only website ordering, so I ended up placing the order on the site and had to wait versus watch them make my bowls. But the staff was very nice and fast. When I found out Sweetfin had a location in DTLA, I was stoked to try it out because I was too lazy to make the trek over to Santa Monica for their other location. So as we make our way inside, we're greeted by an invasion of West Elm aesthetic. I'm talking to you about light woods and geometric design. Already a check in my book. To order your food, you keep continuing to the very end of the store. You can choose between one of their specialty recipes for their poke or you can build your own bowl by picking out your fish and dressing. Either way, you get five toppings in addition to your order and one dollar per premium topping. My poke creation turned out great, highly recommend the ponzu dressing if you're stuck on how to dress your fish. I do want to note that their small size is best described as maybe a fistful and a half worth of food. That bowl is tiny. The large sized bowl is what you'd find more often at your other run-of-the-mill poke joints. The fish quality is pretty good but for how much you're ultimately paying for your meal, (around 10 for a small not factoring any premiums or drinks), I hope your wallet can take a hit. It was good for my first time but I'm not sure if I'd come again with the price in mind. A solid 3.5 but documenting as a 4 due to ambiance and friendly staff. read more
