The food here is passable, but the service...yikes! When you order out, they regularly mess up your order, and when you order in restaurant the staff is apathetic and often surly. And for the awful service, you get the pleasure of paying nearly 50 bucks for a mediocre meal for two. But the most hilarious (and last) straw was when I neglected to call in quickly enough on a take-out order to correct a major flaw in their ordering system. I also appreciate how cautious they were with Covid with protecting both employees and customers. However, after eating at the picnic tables on Wednesday night, the service deserves 1 star. I think 3 different people helped us throughout the night, and they were all apathetic & inattentive. We requested a second tea cup multiple times, and it never appeared. I asked one server if I could order an additional dish packaged to go, and she assured me she would let the kitchen know. It came out dine-in ready. One claimed the outdoor fan could not be turned off. Multiple people tried to rush us to clear the dishes. Easily one of my favorite places in Austin, especially for Thai food! I always always ALWAYS get the Pad Thai with Crispy Pork Belly! It never disappoints and they make it perfect every time. It's also a big enough portion to have it for dinner and have enough to eat for lunch the next day (unless you have a big appetite lol). This place is also great if you have dietary restrictions. TONS of vegan and vegetarian options that do not skimp out on the taste. If you have enough room for dessert, definitely try the ice cream they make Service here is always amazing. I have been to Thai Fresh now a few times for both take-out and dine-in and love it. You scan the QR Codes on the table and food is brought out to you. You grab silverware from self-service stations. The inside feels more like a coffee shop and would be a great, quiet place to get some work done. In the coffeeshop area, there is a full bakery and various ice cream flavors that are delicious and everything is vegan and gluten-free! The food is outstanding and during brunch the full menu is still available. I usually opt for the Thai Omelet which is 10/10. I look forward to trying more items! Now I've returned to Austin after having been out of the country for nearly a year and at the top of my list to come back home to was Thai Fresh. Every item on their menu is made with quality ingredients, prepared with so much care and thought. They pay their staff a livable wage and they're one of the only eating establishments around that offers paid time off and health insurance. What?? Take heed, people. This is peak Thai comfort food in Austin. The self-seating, self-service sets the tone for a more casual setting, but doesn't sacrifice the speed of food at all. It's also very refreshing to see a restaurant pay their staff living wages (hence why the menu items may seem slightly more expensive than usual, and tipping is not expected). Parking can be a little difficult here as the lot is on the smaller side. On to the food. They serve my favorite ever papaya salad in Austin: crunchy, spicy, savory, and with dried baby shrimp. I also LOVED the coconut soup, perfectly balanced by ginger and lemongrass in the broth. All their desserts are also 10/10 yum. The reason I deduct one star is that once in a while, they serve food that's on the verge of spoiling. On one occasion, I was met with a soggy, rotten papaya salad. The chicken in the spicy noodle salad was a bit sour and on the uncooked side. When they get it right, they really get it right. But once in a while, you'll get a slightly off dish. I agreed to meet at Thai Fresh for a date (his choice-thumbs up) and it didn't disappoint. I hadn't been there in awhile and the quality and service were still spot on. I was greeted upon entering and told me that it was only going to be a few minutes. My date arrived and we were promptly seated. I had the drunken noodles with chicken and it was delicious. I offered my date a bite of my food and he took accepted. He didn't offer me a bite of his food...hmmm??? Is that a sign to have only a first date? I've been eating at Thai Fresh for the last 6-7 years, since moving to south Austin. One of my earliest experiences was attending a cooking class which I really enjoyed. However, the dining experience never lived up to the hype. Until quite recently, I could never convince my husband to go here despite the great food. Before the new pricing and inclusive tipping the service was always bad and food took ages to come out of the kitchen. Then with the switch to higher prices which included tipping the service was still bad but we were "forced" to pay for it. I'm not speaking poorly of the move to include tipping and pair servers a reasonable wage. However it felt unfair to me as a customer when I was receiving crap service and slow food. In the last year, we've seen a dramatic turn around. The restaurant got a bit of a facelift so the cafe half is brighter and more open. Food comes out of the kitchen at a reasonable speed based on how busy they are. The food is still and always has been great. They have a reasonably priced wine menu. I was searching for a while online to find takeout while everything has been shut down and found this through one of the Austin articles online. This was our first visit to Thai Fresh. I knew going into it that the prices were going to be different than what you would normally see. I heard the pad thai was good and we were in the area. My wife and I both ordered the pad thai. I typically request mine to be spicy, the server told me that they just make it one way and if we want it spicier we can add red chili flakes, sriracha, or the spicy chilies. We came around 3 on a Sunday, the was hardly anyone there. Our food came out very quickly and the server brought us peanuts and everything to spicy it up. The pad thai was good, not the best I've ever had and not worth what they charge. For the price, you should get more. The noodles were good, there were a ton of fresh vegetables in it, which I like. There was plenty of chicken as well, just cut very small. Overall our experience wasn't bad, the server was friendly, the food came out quick. read more

I'm notoriously un fussy about Thai food, generally I like it all, we moved in super close to this place and I was excited to check it out but I can't imagine it being a regular spot. Their online ordering system is super easy to navigate + Covid / curb side pick up system ran very smoothly. I appreciate their 'no tips required because we pay our staff' philosophy. But the food just wasn't that great. We had a pad Thai which was fine - leant towards the bland, a slightly watery and uninteresting yellow curry + something called 'chicken rice' which had a better flavour but too much rubbery skin and gristle in it to make it enjoyable. I was sufficiently hungry to make a reasonable dent in it but there are too many other options locally to justify round two. read more

To summarize others' great feedback--good to better than average food, disorganized service and operations (the internet order was lost, they didn't include the brown rice with the red curry chicken dish), the location is coffee-shop like, the pricing is more indicative of downtown Austin than Mary Street. (aka kinda pricey) But all of that aside--would definitely go back when in the neighborhood. The food was quite good, ingredients fresh, tasty recipes.
