I am not too big on chicken sandwiches but the other day I overheard some people discussing and watching a video over chicken sandwiches so it came up to me that my brain wanted some of that for lunch on a Sunday. The place is compact and cosy. The exterior looks very small but there's plenty of seating both inside and outside. When one enters there was a mixture of options whether you want to go or dine in but I just went direct to the self kiosk. Everything is straightforward. One has to put in their own name and number on a buzzer but one eventually finishes. Wait time was awesome, I thought my buzzer was trippin' but I showed them my buzzer and it was my order. AMAZING! I sat outside because I was speedwalking and a little sweaty and there was shade and a little breeze so it was convenient. Got curly fries and the classic non-spicy chicken burger. The fries were not greasy at all and had a nice amount of seasoning. The chicken burger was very nice. Maybe a bit chewy and juicy (I think) but the flavours were there. Not too greasy, the cabbage and the pickles really gave it a nice fresh flavour. There's a nice balance which I think it's a coleslaw type of salad and the chicken. I would love to try the spicy one. The temperature of the food was not boiling hot so made it was easy to eat it without cooling off for a while. Nice place for a small group of friends or a quick yum lunch. It's affordable for what it is. The chicken looked really good as well. Montgomery BART station is near and MUNI buses 14, and 14R on Mission street are available. Transbay terminal is like a block away. read more

I had the loaded fries and spicy sandwich and wow they were super good! The fries were perfectly crispy, loaded with just the right amount of toppings, and every bite had a delicious mix of flavor and texture. The spicy sandwich had the perfect kick not too overpowering, but enough heat to keep it exciting plus the chicken was juicy and seasoned just right. Alex recommended it, and I'm so glad he did because it was exactly what I was craving. Big shoutout to him for the awesome suggestion, he was chill, friendly, and really knew the menu. Yummy! Yagurl is obsessed with Spicy chicken sandwiches! This was our first meal in SF as transplants (have visited in the past but now living here!) and it was a great meal. I also really appreciate how intuitive the self ordering kiosk was, like dang, shoutout to the team who built that experience- I see you. We ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, curly fries and apple fritters. The chicken was very moist and tender, curly fries was tasty, and the apple fritters were amazing. Like yo, I've never had an apple fritter this good before. Would come back for a bag of fritters all the time...plus its very affordable (for california). You can bet we'll be back here. read more

The BEST chicken sandwich i've had in the city. The chicken was cooked to perfection, so tender and juicy the curly fries were also great, perfectly seasoned. Great way to fuel up when you're in a rush. I've had The Bird bookmarked a while back and was wondering what the hype was about. Definitely a hearty uber chicken sammich, that has a kick. Service was friendly and plenty of seating available. You order through their POS system !and they call your name. Staff were super nice!! I wish I could take my order directly from them not the giant tablet. I could've felt like I could ask more questions. But the spicy chicken sammy was like dripping spicy red sauce and the bun, greens, cheese, ratio was soooo off to the big ole fried chicken rectangle. I wish I had more coleslaw to even the ratio out, I ate it with rice the next day and it was super good. Just be aware its like 80% chicken. If that's up ur alley, go for it. read more

This was the perfect pit stop while checking out SFMOMA (my friend and I worked up quite the appetites using extra brainpower on our art analyses in there haha)! The chicken speaks for itself and is definitely the star of the show even though it's accompanied by coleslaw, pickles, and sauce. The bun is sturdy enough to be a good vehicle for everything. Also, I did order spicy but now that I think about it I don't remember it being very spicy at all so possibly I received the regular option (or I may just be used to Howlin Ray's type of spice in LA). We also tried the curly fries, as well as the apple fritters which were bouncy and filled with tiny apple chunks. The dough itself didn't have much sweetness so the bit of maple icing on top provided just enough. Everything was reasonably priced and came out super quickly! read more

Fried Chicken Sandwich (spicy) (5/5) - this is probably one of the best Nashville style chicken in the city - perfect for a lunch in SOMA. Chicken is spicy, savory, and juicy. I love that they paired it with a creamy sweet coleslaw. The bread is a buttery brioche too which is nice. Loaded Tots (4/5) - love tots and honesty anything potato so this was great. When you get a bite with everything, it's really well balanced from the crispy savory tots to the sour cream to the fresh chives. I wish for the price it was a tad bigger The location in soma has plenty of seating and there's a couple ways to order from kiosk to at table. I didn't have much of a wait when I went at 1 on a Friday. Overall, a solid lunch spot for when you're craving something savory and spicy. read more

I came here because my usual lunch options were closed for the day. Ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, curly fries and slaw. I was really hungry and looking forward to basically ANY version of a fried chicken sandwich I had ever eaten; even McDonalds would have sufficed. Unfortunately, the chicken was inedible. It was literally impossible to bite through the sandwich. I kept checking the color of the chicken to see if it was raw. It was not. I don't know how you turn chicken into a rubber band ball, but they managed. The bird was one of the first hot chicken sandwiches I tried and in my mind it was always one of the best. However I had it again for the first time in years and left very underwhelmed. I got the spicy chicken sandwich and it wasn't spicy at all. I also noticed you can't choose the spicy level anymore. It's just either original or spicy with no custom spice level. The sandwich also looks a lot smaller. Curly fries were average. Everything was just super mid. There are so many hot chicken joints in the bay now and the bird has fallen behind. I've had a lot of great nashville hot chicken just in california- think howlin' rays, dave's hot chicken, angry chickz, etc. I had high expectations for this place after others praised it highly. The location is very cute and hard to find! The staff was courteous and very nice. I ordered a chicken sandwich and loaded fries. The seasoning of the chicken was good- nice crisp as well. But the chicken itself (maybe I had an off order) missed the mark for me. It didn't taste as tender or juicy as other places I've had. We got the spicy chicken sandwich. It was pretty good. The chicken was tender and juicy. The coleslaw gave sweetness and crunch to the sandwich. The pickles were a bit sour and crunchy. All of that combined, gave the sandwich great texture and taste. However, the chicken lacked a bit of flavor and the spicy wasn't spicy. The fried chicken sandwich is amazingly delicious! The fried chicken itself is fried to perfection and is well seasoned, not overly salty. It's dark meat so it's super juicy and tender. The cold slaw and pickles are fresh and give a nice crunch to the sandwich. The bun is soft and buttery. It's definitely worth the price for how good this is! The curly fries was just alright. It was well seasoned but it wasn't made to order so it was a bit cold when I had it at the spot. The apple fritters was a disappointment. I could tell that the oil they used was old so the fritters turned out super dark. It would taste so much better if they use fresh oil. Recommend the fried chicken sandwich! Walked by here yesterday while on a city hike and decided to grab a snack. The food itself was pretty good. I love that the slaw on the sandwich is 'German style' with vinaigrette instead of mayo (hate mayo), but at $10 a sando, it feels a little pricey, but that's SF living for you. The fries were decent for curly fries. If they are going to do from frozen fries, I wish they did waffle fries instead. The apple fritters were good and tasty, but must eat hot/right away, as they lose their punch as they get cold. What really made the experience was the guy working there, Daniel, who did a lot of interaction, as well as dealing with my initial questions. I appreciated his engagement, especially as we took a few mins to talk about dogs as my husky was with me outside. Definitely would go by again when craving a 'religious chicken sando', probably the Hayes valley one since its a few blocks from my condo, but really appreciated the service more than anything! read more

Came during weekday dinner (no line, some folks eating inside, plenty of empty tables outside). Pre-pandemic this spot always had a line down block during weekday lunch, especially Fridays. Glad they survived the pandemic and even opened more stores! Ordered to-go: chicken biscuit (3/5) - tasted dry overall. Biscuit was on dry, not soft and fluffy. Would still prefer the classic sandwich. Chicken biscuit came with tater tots - tasted as should, wished had more dipping sauce options beyond ketchup. Can't believe I am reviewing this place after 4 years of constantly going there! I don't think I can add much that hasn't been said already. Food: One of the best chicken sandwiches in the Bay Area. Period! Also, try the Fully Loaded fries to complement the sandwich. Ambiance: Sort of like a sports bar. They have a huge TV with mostly NFL games playing, even on Thursday nights. My coworker and I had just finished setting up our booth at the Moscone Center and was absolutely parched. Both of us had come off of a 6.5 hour flight and desperately needed water. We started walking in one direction and passed by several closed cafes or cafes that did not have bottled water. We walked into The Bird, ready to pay for water and they just gave us two cups to get water from their fountain soda station. Honestly, it was so nice of them we were both so grateful. Coworker came back later in the week to try their food and she said it was quite good. This place deserved 5 star and it is the best fried chicken in the city. This place is located in the Montgomery street, and it is very conveniently located. We ordered almost all the items in the menu and the items are limited as well. So we ordered curly fried, apple fritters, fried chicken sandwich, naked bird, spicy wings. 5/5 for the naked bird. Oh my god the naked bird is just a fried chicken breast but it is so juicy and tender dipped in the Nashville hot sauce. We ordered four of them. 5/5 for the chicken sandwich. When my boss said this was the best chicken sandwich and that he craved it, I was skeptical. Especially when one of my coworkers literally said she would rather have a salad than eat here. Yikes! But, in hind sight I kind of wish I would have followed her lead. I just do not get the craving or the hype. So the spicy chicken is like a fried Sriracha chicken sandwich. It was okay, but honestly I'm more wowed by Popeye's spicy chicken sandwich and this one is like 25% more expensive with not much crunch or anything of a wow factor. It's just a fried Sriracha chicken sandwich that tastes like it's made by your local cafeteria kitchen worker. The slaw was good though. They also have curly fries at double the price and not so fresh and hot. I can't see myself going back. read more

Amazing fried chicken sandwiches!! I was so hungry but I stumbled upon the Bird and saw that it was packed, so I decided to try it out. The menu itself is pretty small, but I think they really emanate quality over quantity. I got the regular chicken burger with a side of curly fries. This was one of the crunchiest pieces of fried chicken I've ever had, and the slaw, pickles, and sauce went perfectly together. I had mine on the spicier side, but I also tried adding some of their house made sriracha and that was a very good combination. I do wish they had more cold drink options than just beer and somehow the ketchup was sub par but otherwise, would definitely come back again for a quick and yummy meal! read more

We're the go-to for indulgent food that's made with integrity and sold for just 8 bucks. If this sounds counter intuitive, it should. We've set out to prove that a really satisfying breakfast, lunch or dinner doesn't have to eat up the paycheck. So, what makes our signature fried chicken sandwich special? Our chicken is always free-range. We use a berbere spice blend to give the chicken that little something special. Our fried chicken is served on a fresh bun that's baked each morning by a local baker. The sandwich is loaded with our own crunchy apple slaw (made fresh in house daily). What do you mean by regular/classic? I ordered a regular, but it was very spicy. When people are choosing between regular or spicy, are they really choosing between "spicy" and "extra spicy?"

Our classic has a slight kick to it and our spicy chicken gets a coating our spicy sauce. Most people would probably give the classic a 1-2 out of 10 on the spicy scale. You may have had a spicy instead of classic if it was very spicy.

We have a vegetarian salad with romaine hearts and baby kale mix, braised beets, spelt, celery and apple, choice of dressing: vinaigrette (champagne vinegar and honey), ranch, or blue cheese

Michael, we have happy hour daily from 4-7pm. Our happy hour consist of $2 wings but there not your average party chicken wings, we serve the whole wing, it’s a huge wing if you ask me. Also, our tall beer cans are $1 off during happy hour.

I ordered "The Original" with jasmine chicken rice, extra cilantro, cucumber, chicken skin (love that those are free add-ons), and an egg, and while the bowl was fine, all of the flavors felt like they could've been amped up several notches as everything leaned pretty bland and one note. I even swapped in the ginger scallion sauce, usually my favorite with Hainanese chicken, but it still fell flat and didn't bring the dish together the way I'd hoped. The dark meat was okay, if under-seasoned, but the breast meat was honestly pretty rough as it was extremely dry to the point where I was chasing each bite with water just to get it down. I added the chicken spring rolls as well, which were poorly wrapped and fell apart after a single bite, and they used the same overcooked white meat, making them basically inedible. If this is the standard for their white meat, I really think they should either stick to dark meat or make it clear that dark meat is an option without an upcharge. That said, my order was ready right when I expected it to be, pickup was smooth, and the staff were very nice and friendly, which keeps this from dropping lower in rating as I'm likewise hoping this was just an off night.

It felt like the moment he heard 'gluten' and 'dairy,' he mentally categorized me as 'vegan' and stopped looking for ways to make the experience enjoyable. Yikes! Lol I fully recognize - girl, why did you go to a pizza spot with a gluten and dairy allergy? Yes I am not okay for this hahah but also I felt pretty embarrassed and treated really poorly. Even better, they have QR codes at the tables so you can skip the line altogether and order online. It's a lifesaver during peak hours. Seeking a show stopping spicy chicken sandwich? Look no further because The Bird has you covered. Great eats, fast and friendly service...what more could you ask for? The Bird is located in a small spot on New Montgomery. It could easily be passed when walking or driving by, especially because the sign above their door has a dog on it, but they have a sign on the sidewalk directing customers to the front door. I called in my order for pickup and by the time I arrived, they were bagging up my last item. Very prompt and super fresh food served up with a smile. My husband and I tried a few things to share: Fried Chicken Sandwich (spicy) , Fully Loaded Fries, and Hot Wings. Everything was so fantastic; wings super flavorful, fries nice and crispy. However, the main attraction of the meal was the spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich. Our first bites into the sandwich were quickly accompanied by, "OMG! Wow!" Excellent crisp, great amount of heat, tender chicken, explosion of flavor, and perfect size, The Bird's spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich puts all other competitor's chicken sandwiches to shame. We loved it more than the legendary Howlin' Rays sandwich in L.A. If you're into the spicy chicken sandwich craze, The Bird is an absolute must try spot. Give them a try.
