TLDR: Good sushi. Loud. Crowded. Loud chatty atmosphere. Tiny waiting area. They don't tell you upfront but you need to write your name on a paper list on the end of the wall divider. Complimentary miso soup and noodle salad. Miso has spinach in it instead of seaweed. Seaweed salad: sesame flavored with hint of sweet vinegar. Very tasty compared to other places that have that "fishy" taste. Salmon Philly Maki: man do they load up on that salmon! It's super filling just by itself! Combo B: chicken karaage was not very flavored and looked a lot different than what I am used to--it's almost white. Gyoza very moist but had good flavor. I've been going to Toyoda sushi for years. I had not been for a long time. It was great to see the food was still good. That said, the prices have skyrocketed and I really felt like the value was no longer there. The bill for four people was $386 and we didn't even drink alcohol. WTF. read more

I've been to Toyoda Sushi a good number of times, and I love it. I usually go with either my boyfriend (we had our first date there and go back at least on anniversaries) and sometimes 1-2 other people. I definitely recommend sitting at the bar (especially if getting sushi). It's fun to watch the chefs make the sushi and ordering straight from them. The last time there were 3 of us and the sushi chef accomodated by making 3 pieces of each nigiri over (instead of the usual 2). The creamy noodle/crab/apple (?) salad is always delicious, and so is the squid salad. Mmmmmm. I am shocked at how many people have given this place 5 stars. We had a strange experience with the quality of food, pricing and then paying the bill. In addition to peculiarly sweet soy sauce and sushi rice the order of 3 types of sashimi came on a plate piled with oddly sliced pieces of fish. The Hamachi was okay, the salmon and chu toro were not good. When we put in our order the server said, just to let you know the sashimi is at least 4 pieces each. So with the piled high plate we didn't know if we were getting generous servings or getting ready to be charged for triple the amount. The rolls were adequate but not great. The chicken kaarage was probably the best. The most appalling thing was that the bill was $194 handwritten on a slip of paper. No itemized bill AND you have to pay through Zelle or Venmo classifying not as business but a personal transaction. This seems odd. I've never seen this before. Just seems like they are trying to get away with something. With so much great sushi around the city, this old Seattle establishment is just not worth it. We won't be going back. read more

It was my first time here last night (11/23/13). I had it bookmarked for years, but I just rarely ever make it to this area anymore. Anyway, it was a busy Sunday night. We showed up close to 7:30 and our party was 5 deep, and we wanted to sit at the sushi bar, unfortunately it was not in our cards last night. So about 60% of our party are regulars here, the owners knew one by name, and recognized the others. And that's where the awesome journey begins. We ordered a smorgasboard of goodies: agedashi tofu. gomae, gyoza, hamachi kama (both baked and fried, fried was compliments of the owners), tako salad, tons of sushi (tamago, scallop, tuna, mackarel, ikura, etc... sadly they were out of uni), AND lots of sake and beer! We also unexpectedly received some spicy tuna, toro, mackarel, scallop, tuna sashimi! WE WERE STUFFED! Seriously, we should have been rolled out of that place! AND the staff and the owners make you feel like you've come home. They were super personable, quite generous, and the food was DELICIOUS and fresh! A tiny hole in the wall, easily missed on the darkish street. The place looked cozy and inviting from outside. As soon as you walk in, remember to take a whiff of the air. It smells like sushi chefs preparing rice, soup, sushi and everything wonderful. What appealed to me was that it was family run. Towards the end, their personal chatters started to flow. Hilarious and equally enjoyable. But do not be fooled, these folks take their business seriously. Favorite sushi spot in North Seattle! A family owned restaurant that really takes pride in their customer satisfaction. The menu reminds me of home and all my favorite Japanese traditional foods. You can't go wrong with anything you order. The wait staff is always so friendly and helpful in making great selections. Parking is limited to street parking or a small parking lot around the back. The lot shares parking for several eateries close by. Just recently purchased a gift card for future use once things settle down from COVID 19. Visiting Seattle and made our annual visit to Toyoda Sushi. The owners, Nachan and Helen, were very gracious to all of the customers and the sushi dinner, sashimi dinner, as well as the black cod and grilled salmon dishes were all outstanding. First time ordering here and felt like eating poke and I have heard before that they had some bomb bowls. So I ordered the spicy tuna bowl which is supposed to be loaded with tuna, chives and with a hint of spice. It came with a side of miso soup and some type of weird udon salad? Not quite sure but everything was bad. The udon salad was wet and barely tasted like anything and the miso soup I could tell was just those packets you buy from Fred Myers as a quick to go. And the main course, poke was even worse. I don't know what I was expecting but it definitely wasn't this. The poke was bland and barely tasted like anything, it was mushy for some reason and I get it, I've had shredded poke before and usually I love it but for some reason this poke was horrible. It was soggy with no flavor and for some reason watery with added chunks of salmon skin and tuna skin? I'm from Hawaii so I know what good poke tastes like and this isn't it. Also let's talk about the price, for maybe a fist full of poke and the sides it was 16.58?? This makes no sense to me what so ever, it would be different if it tasted good at all but it didn't. Good poke in Hawaii is maybe 12 if you're going somewhere on the expensive side. This was definitely a disappointment for me and would not suggest ordering the poke from here. I've been teleported to Roppongi. The quality of sushi I used to eat on the streets of Azabu-juban. A fresh selection of nigiri and sashimi complemented by traditional hand rolls native to nippon. If you are looking for the Marshawn Lynch roll, this isn't your place. But if you want mouthwatering, melt in your mouth quality fish and extremely friendly and gracious hosts (the Toyoda Family) this is your new favorite sushi joint. Tried this place for the first time after it was recommended. Waited an hour to get a table which was expected. When we finally sat down, we ordered our drinks and food. The drinks, sushi and appetizer came quick. There were five of us total so we figured the main dishes would take some time. One hour later, my order came. They brought us free edamame for the delay. 30 minutes later half of one order came. Another 30 minutes went by and my husbands order came. We didn't notice that 2 hours went by and my daughter didn't get her order. The food on the table went cold and we were frustrated. When we asked about it, they apologized and brought out a random order. We were annoyed at this point and the owner came by to bribe us with free beer for the issue. On top of it, my daughter and sister never got their food. Then the waitress has the audacity to let us know that it's last call. We told them that we all didn't eat because the order was never complete. We told them to pack up our food so we could get the hell out of there. We paid and told them it wasn't ok what they did. We won't be wasting anymore time there, an hour in line is not worth it. Try going to the Elliot Bay or Pho An across the street from there, the food is great and they know how to treat customers unlike this place.... See the pictures on how they wrapped up our food. Toyoda Sushi used to feel like a rare gem in the Lake City area. They have a good selection of vegetarian rolls, in addition to all their traditional sushi rolls. But I stopped going there because their service was bad plus their Dept of Health ratings weren't great and the owner owns several properties in my neighborhood that are in total disrepair - old junker cars, rats, blackberry brambles, etc. It didn't give me confidence that they would be careful with the food at their restaurant. read more

The tempura that comes with the udon was a little plain. Either the batter needed a little more salt or the sauce could have been sweeter. Oh and I thought the food was way over priced! Udon $20... hm... okay this is probably why I would never return.. This was my first time here and didn't really know what to expect. I was seated fairly quickly but, it took a little bit on getting my order taken. While I was waiting for my food, I saw one of the servers with excellent customer service! She acknowledged returning customers and greeted them warm welcoming smiles. I never got this kind of service.. The energy in here is absolutely infectious. I could sit and (invisibly) watch these content faces all night. A father and his son, two marrieds out for a probable date night, a couple a dudes catching up, a couple a gals I can hear spilling tea; and myself, grabbing to-go cause I would really just like to be with MY person(erhem- pawson), cozy at home, watching Forensic Files... As I wait, a patron is greeted by name, and ushered toward chef seating at the counter, next to "other named patron" and I refrained from blurting introduction of myself just so that I could possibly be a part of such wonderful warm treatment the next time I'm in. I'd say I'll be back with the foods critique, but it is monumentally clear that they are doing everything right, and I won't have to. Edit: as I recieve my order, she adorably whispers that they gave me an extra roll (maybe because in clearly new, maybe because I tip as one should, in to go food), and she gets the door for me. My first visit was not a disappoint. I came in hungry and could barely make it outside after. My favorite part was the fast, friendly service. This place is pretty charming and seemed to be a favorite place for many to go to eat sushi. It's very tidy and simple. Oh yeah, It opens at 5:30 pm and so with that said, plan ahead. My brother-in-law is a big foodie and is always generous to share his love for foods. Here we were with our favorite friends and family once again, enjoyed the never ending sushi presentations, fried ice cream (check out the photos) and lots of keep-it-coming unfiltered sake. I first went to Toyoda Sushi about one month ago. I have been there literally at least once every week since. I love sushi, and have frequented many sushi places around Seattle. What makes Toyoda stand out is their great quality, selection, and affordability. I have seen reviews that question the service, but I have been fortunate to always have great care and attentiveness while here. The staff have been very friendly and there seems to be a lot of regulars. Everything here has been so good. My favorite is their sashimi sampler (chef's choice). I usually share this and a small appetizer and we are all full. Ours came with tuna, salmon, scallop, octopus, mackerel, razor clam, snapper, and hamachi. We have also tried the Hamachi Collar, which is crispy and well seasoned and comes in a generous portion. We had the small poke at our last visit, which was again very good! The small was about $30 and was plenty for both of us. Even though it seems a bit pricey for poke, the quantity surpassed that of two normal poke bowls in Seattle (which usually ends up as around $30 anyways). Also, the poke is mixed variety with hamachi, salmon and tuna with salmon roe and a little seaweed salad on the bottom. The poke here had a less salty taste compared to other poke places, which I prefer. Probably my least favorite item I have gotten is the sushi sampler, which is a combination of nigiri and a chef's choice roll. This was still tasty, but was a bit more ordinary and seemed to be priced higher than their other items (but again, the price is just more similar to other sushi restaurants). Finally, I love how they have the complimentary miso soup and noodle salad at every visit! Sometimes we also get complimentary rolls and seaweed/octopus salad, but when/how that happens we are still trying to figure out. read more

Summary: Service rude and fish poor. I have been coming to Toyoda for over 25 years and it has been slowly going downhill and is finally not much more of a sushi experience than that at a strip mall or supermarket. The problem is two-fold, firstly the service away from the sushi bar was always sketchy, with tattered receipts that were sometimes wrong, servers that were uninformed about the menu and missed orders, or even able to explain the basics of sake. And when crowded the staff was overwhelmed and the noise level such that it wasn't a quality experience, it was more like a bus stop. And finally the quality of the sushi and preparation has gone downhill. The pieces may be big but the fish sometime ragged and not up to top chef quality. It makes me sad to say this but I won't be going back, I like an authentic sushi experience and that is no longer the experience at Toyoda. read more

We moved to the Lake City neighborhood and always wondered about this mysterious sushi restaurant that seemed to always be closed when we wanted to go. However, last night, with my 8-year-old daughter, we got the opportunity. I was blown away. I ordered the Toro sashimi and salmon sashimi. It was the most generous and also best tasting fish I HAVE EVER HAD! We had to wait for about 10 minutes, which I expected given the size and the other reviews. No worries for us. The food was just a little slow, which also didn't bother us at all. However, we received a few extras while we waited as well as many apologies due to the wait. I was enjoying the one on one time with my daughter, so in no rush. I just love the family feel of the staff. They were ALL lovely and attentive. We were there on a Wednesday night around 6:30pm. I recently came here with friends after snowshoeing. In this neighborhood, I was surprised how good the food was. This restaurant is located in Lake City downtown. I know, Lake City, right? I didn't think I would ever go there, just because of the name. But, again, the food is surprisingly good and the fish is fresh. Of course, there's parking. Among friends and I, we ordered some sushi and tempera. After we got seated, we were served with complimentary miso soup and noodle salad. All of us enjoyed the soup. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the noodle salad. But, it was a good starter. All the dishes had good taste and good presentation. Fish we had was very fresh. There wasn't bone in the fish like I found in the other place. This is the profession right here! We were there shortly after 5PM. As soon as we came, the place was filled with customers in 20 mins. The young server might not be very experienced, but with some guidance from the senior server, she was able help us. I will definitely come back here and sit on the sushi bar for more traditional food one of those days. read more
