    Pho Dac Biet (Lunch)
    Shayla N.

I keep trying to find a good pho spot in West Hollywood, and this place unfortunately proved my point again. The restaurant has a cute comic book-inspired aesthetic, but the food didn't live up to it. If you're Vietnamese or have high expectations for pho, you'll probably find it pretty mediocre. Even the milk tea tasted watered down. The lunch special might seem like a good deal, but it's only about $1 more than the pho alone. It includes a drink, but milk tea costs extra, so the pricing doesn't really make sense. Service was okay. There was only one person working as both the host and server, so things took a little longer, although the food came out fairly quickly. Overall, I wouldn't come back. If you're just looking for a decent $20 meal and aren't too picky about pho, you might enjoy it. For me, it just reinforced how hard it is to find truly good pho in West Hollywood.

I just paid $30 for pho with extra ribeye and broth only to find the portion sizes are practically snack sized. I don't care how good you think your pho is, but this is a total ripoff of a restaurant and yes, I can make my own pho way better. Will never support this place ever again. Also stop putting fish sauce in the broth. It's meant to be an add on last minute. You ruin the broth by doing this when broth is hot. Listen to how Vietnamese people actually make it instead of bastardizing this dish to suit your poor taste.

Second time - barely any rare steak

Unfortunately inconsistent. The first time my bf & I ordered takeout (2x pho combos), we were impressed. The broth was flavorful and generous rare steak portion, which is a top factor for me. The second time was a stark contrast: very bland broth, the noodles didn't taste as fresh, and the portion of meat was so small compared to our first visit. The difference in quality was honestly shocking. I hope consistency improves! But probably won't reorder anytime soon as I don't want the gamble if it'll be good or bad lol.

    "Pho-let" Mignon

Absolutely loved everything about this place. With most other places the decor is less than notable, that's not the case here. The unique art style was a very nice touch, with endless pho puns which I loved. And crazy late hours for some of us night owls is also nice. As for the dining experience, service was fantastic, very prompt and friendly. Food was served very quickly. I had the "Pho-let" mignon. Pho with sliced filet mignon and brisket. The meats were perfectly tender, broth was super hot and flavorful, and it was a generous portion of noodles. Not pictured but I also tried the Lao Pork Egg Rolls, which were fried to a perfect amount of crispy. And also the Mango Passionade, it was very sweet but tasty. Will definitely return and would absolutely recommend.

Total was $348 (we tipped $41)

We decided to try this new pho spot because it caught our attention, but right away the name threw us off. Twenty Pho Hour sounds like it's open around the clock, but it actually refers to their broth being cooked for twenty four hours. Their real hours are from ten thirty in the morning to midnight. Since the place is on one of the busiest streets in Hollywood and had only been open a few weeks, we expected a crowd. Instead, it was pretty empty with plenty of open tables. The restaurant itself looks clean, modern, and simple, which made it feel welcoming. We came with a large group, and they did their best to seat us together. We asked for a little extra time to order because not everyone had arrived yet, and looking back, that probably slowed everything down. Once our full group was there, it took a long time for anyone to come back to take our order. Our server, who I believe was named Sam or Samantha (Filipina girl) seemed overwhelmed from the start. We understood the restaurant was new and still figuring things out, so we tried to be patient and work with her, especially since some menu items weren't available. Even with that, it took a long time to get our order in, and she kept pushing back on how we wanted to place it, which made us feel like we weren't being listened to. After she finally took our order, she immediately asked, "Who's paying?" At first we thought she was joking, but she told us we had to pay before they could start making the food. When we asked if that was normal, she said, "Well, this is Hollywood," implying they deal with people walking out on the bill. We tried to lighten the moment by joking about it, but she responded in a serious tone, saying, "That's how your food gets made." We didn't want to make things harder for her, so we just paid upfront with one card to keep it simple. Once the order was in, the food came out fairly quickly, but the wait leading up to it didn't feel worth it. Most of the dishes were underwhelming. The bowls had way too much rice and not enough protein. Surprisingly, the best things we tried were the Pad Thai and the funnel cake fries. The pho itself was okay, but with so many great pho spots in LA, it's hard to justify the long wait and the customer service issues. Prices were also on the higher side, so if you're looking for value, this probably isn't the place. I really don't enjoy leaving a negative review for a new restaurant, but first impressions matter, and unfortunately this one missed the mark for us.

Loved this place from the atmosphere to the food.. definitely make this place a must go when in the area. I visit whenever I'm traveling to Cali

    Steam Edamame

PHO DAC BIET 7.5/10: This pho was $17 (17.50 I think) and for that price it's pretty good! The broth was really flavorful and there was a good amount of noodle. My only notes were that I wish that the tripe had not been cut up so small, I prefer bigger pieces. Also, I felt as though the meat was a bit on the tough side.... Not dry but a bit tough... if that makes sense. For the price, it wasn't bad. EDAMAME 10/10: I recommend this edamame for simple edamame lovers-- then again my mom was the one who ate them and I'm not edamame expert. It was 6.50 for a huge bowl of edamame and my mom ate them up. Pretty good! SPRING ROLL --/10: I will soon update my review to include my mom's rating of the spring rolls but to let you know, she ate them all. They were huge and it came with beef and shrimp inside of the rolls. SERVICE 10/10: I didn't get my waitress's name but she was so fricking sweet and attentive. She also is very clean and my mom noticed how she washed her hands just to hand my mom a salt shaker-- very thoughtful. She made sure to ask us if we needed anything and was very accommodating. AMBIANCE 9/10: Cute spot, very black and white and ample space. Very clean restaurant! NORES-- - They have bathrooms! - I suggest parking next door... where there are lots of food trucks... :)

    Veggie Pho
    Mercedes S.

Service was great but the pho disappointed . I ordered the veggie pho. 2 very large raw leaves of bok choy , completely raw uncooked zucchini ( I'd never seen zucchini in a pho ) canned corn and shredded carrots . Had some of the broth and couldn't eat the rest. This is not how and what a veggie should be.

What a cute restaurant! I like the decor and well lit environment. The staff are nice and accommodating. Their pho was flavorful and the milk tea was refreshing!

The food is so delicious The pad Thai with brisket and the bulgogi bowl tastes so good. The Thai tea isn't the best but the passionfruit paradise drink is good. The place looks cool and the service is nice

This is the best rice noodle soup I've ever eaten! I think I'll visit this place very often from now on. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, and the service is excellent!

    Fried Sampler Platter

This was my first visit to the restaurant, and overall it was a positive experience. I ordered the pho tai along with a fried sampler platter. The broth leaned slightly sweet, which was not quite to my preference, but the dish was still well-prepared. The appetizer sampler, however, was very enjoyable and a highlight of the meal. The customer service was excellent--staff were attentive, welcoming, and efficient throughout the visit. The restaurant itself was also very clean and well-maintained, including the restroom, which added to the overall comfort of the experience. Thanks.

Honestly hard to stomach. Meat was really poor quality. Broth was watery and separated. Sorry to say it because I don't want to put a place down but it was a rough experience. The server was super sweet and polite.

I was instantly so glad we chose this spot to celebrate our anniversary because it was the perfect setting for a romantic date night. Now, let's talk about the food! Everything we ordered was delicious, with the exception of the Korean aguachiles, which we probably could've skipped. We also tried the bluefin bibimbap, oysters, and the oh-so-tender short rib that practically melted in our mouths. But the most unforgettable dish was also the simplest: the Korean fried chicken. It wasn't necessarily something out of the ordinary, but it sure tasted like it. The perfect crisp, flavor, and seasoning had us eating every last piece right down to the bone. Our server also made the experience even better. She gave us some of the best recommendations and were incredibly attentive and friendly throughout the entire meal. We absolutely loved this restaurant and are already planning our next visit!

This spot opened about a year ago, and has a cool speakeasy style entrance at the Highland Park Bowl bowling alley. It is a small space, and I would highly recommend making a reservation on Resy. You have 90 minutes to drink and dine. I parked behind the bowling alley where there is a medium sized pay parking lot. Park in a space, remember your space number painted on the ground, and go to the pay station at the end of the lot. I found the parking machine to be extremely finicky as did other people. After ten minutes of failure, I ended up moving my car to another space, and then it worked. This has nothing to do with the Lucky Tiki, but FYI if you park there. We walked around to the front of the bowling alley, and checked in. Seating options include at the bar, tiki hut booths, and high top tables. The décor inside is a tiki lovers paradise. The room has a high ceiling with many tiki lamps, floats, puffer fish, tiki huts, thatch, ropes, barrels, netting, carvings, a hanging canoe, and a large tiki right in the middle of the space. In addition to the great décor, when you order certain drinks, special effects are triggered. There was also great tiki music playing all evening. We sat at the bar since we always enjoy talking to the bartenders. We actually ran into Skipper Christian in the parking lot on the way in, and he ended up being our main bartender, with Nick and Jo also working behind the bar. We put in a food order right away. The chicken potstickers ($12) came with five tasty bites, and the garlic teriyaki dipping sauce was good. We also had the giant pretzel ($16) which comes with mustard, beer cheese, and ranch sauces. This was excellent, and the perfect filling snack before a bunch of drinks. My first drink was the Siren's Song (Flor de Cana Eco rum, lemon juice, cassis, Oloroso sherry, apricot foam topper, $19). This drink is served in a great mermaid with skull mug and triggers special sound effects and bubbles fill the air. Those bubbles on top of the drink had a great light citrusy apricot flavor, probably the best flavored bubbles I've ever had. The drink itself was very good and balanced with some complexity. She wasn't sure what to order at first, and Christian asked her what flavors she liked. He ended up making a spin on a Tradewinds with some mango and pineapple to go along with the apricot and coconut. It was nicely balanced and not too sweet, even with all that fruit in there. My second drink was the Sun of Suns (Tierra de Acre mezcal, coconut cream, Giffard mango liqueur, pineapple juice, lime juice, $17). This was coconut and pineapple forward with some good smokiness in the background. Her second drink was the Whatever Floats Your Boat (Ford's gin, lemon juice, velvet falernum, orgeat, passion fruit syrup, guava soda, topped with hazelnut passion fruit foam, $19). It is served in a cool boat mug, and triggers thunder sound effects and lighted mechanical Polynesian tiki characters paddling a canoe over the bar. This was another good balanced drink. It was a little gin forward and the passion fruit popped out, maybe from being both in the drink and the foam top. That creamy hazelnut passion fruit form on top is delicious. I'd happily have a glass of that on its own. We were still a little hungry so we ordered the Hawaiian pizza (marinara, diced pepperoni, red onion, pineapple chunks, hot capicola ham, $16). It was another good tasting, perfectly sized snack, and the crust was light and airy. We were already fifteen minutes over our time limit, but we got the green light to stay longer to order a third drink to share. We ordered the Tiki Diablo (Flor de Cana Eco rum, Worthy Park 109 rum, Alma Tepecha chile liqueur, orange juice, lime juice, mango syrup, guava soda, $24). This drink serves two people, is served in a cool volcano bowl with glowing red lava around it, and comes with a fire show. Unfortunately, right after it was served, the host came over and said we were over our time and had to leave shortly. Christian made up for it by giving us two tall pours to go enjoy in the bowling alley bar area which was fine. We were happy we got some extra time inside. The drink was also very good, balanced with a little complexity. We had a great time. There is so much great décor to look at. The drinks and food were very good, and some of the the drink presentations and special effects were the icing on the cake. All of the bartenders were very friendly and a lot of fun. We purchased up a few zombie glasses to take home as a souvenir. I'd definitely recommend visiting the Lucky Tiki in Highland Park!

We decided to get a drink to celebrate Father's Day, only to strike out at the first two bars we tried--I guess a lot of places are closed at 9:30 on a Sunday. This is how we ended up at Thunderbolt, a buzzy bar in Echo Park, just far enough away that we'd never made our way over. I loved it immediately. Thunderbolt has the friendly, comfortable atmosphere of a neighborhood bar and the hip aesthetic and high-level cocktails of a millennial boozer destination. (Not that young people can't or shouldn't hang out here, but it seems especially geared toward people like us, who drank at Walker Inn a decade ago.) We ended up sitting next to a guy who regularly drives up from Palos Verdes. I guess the place gets pretty busy, but it was ideal on a Sunday night. Happening but not crowded, with just enough space at the bar for us to grab two seats together. The bartender was great, super helpful and welcoming. He also made excellent drinks. Thunderbolt is one of those bars with an encyclopedic illustrated book for a menu. Not a long menu, just a detailed one, with a lot of information available about each drink. We got a Liquid Picnic and a Barcelonnette--just one round to close out the weekend. Both were delicious. The Liquid Picnic was a smooth, savory gin martini made with London dry gin, tomato, citron, vermouth, rosemary, and black pepper. I learned from the book that it used clarified tomato water. (There was also further reading about the clarification process.) The Barcelonnette was a mezcal sour with Suze, passionfruit, and lime, the foam made without egg white through some geeky mixologist process. Thunderbolt is not our neighborhood bar, but we plan to go back when we can to check out the rest of the menu. It's a wonderful place, well worth a jaunt on the freeway.
