I've been coming to this place since I was a kid. I always thought it was pretty tiny. It's basically a hole in the wall. If you want a seat without waiting, arrive before 6pm. This place is cheap. Bento box for $8-9 with 3 sides! And the food is delicious! They do not skimp and the quality is not bad. The raw fish is delicious. And if you come on a "good day" the pieces are pretty big. Where else can you get a deal like that? No where! I know all those meat eaters out there have came across a piece of beef teriyaki that is chewed like beef jerky. This place does not serve you that. Bento! Bento! Bento! This is my favorite hole-in-the-wall place for cheap bento boxes. For less than $10, there's a three item bento - teriyaki including short ribs and salmon, nikunegi (sp?), sashmi, tempura, etc. The food is your typical Japanese food, but the portions are generous, and the food is good. And it comes in a bento box! I've had the sushi/sashami here. Its alright as an "oh I want a spider roll, too!" impulse buy to go along with the bento when your appetite is bigger than your stomach, but ultimately, you want the bento. The parking gets a bit packed on the streets, there's a wait sometimes during lunch/dinner, the place is a bit dirty and poorly decorated. This akagi restuarant it has been for long time business, but it need alot upgrade inside the restuarant, it need a new atmosphere, the flooring need to replacement to woodfloor because their carpet floor it look like dirty and old carpet floor and light need to be brightness not dark, the table and chair need replacement as well. The non-ambience works if you are not trying to impress anybody, and they pass the savings onto you in the form of a cheap and overflowing bento box at $6.95. The nigiri is just $1 apiece - we had the hamachi, unagi and the sea urchin which were all fine. We hadn't realized the bento would be so big so we were stuffed by the end up it plus a doggie bag. The only disappointment would be the spicy tuna roll, which $2.75 for 6 is awesome, but as someone very accurately mentioned before, the spiciness was provided by some variation of tabasco and/or taco bell hot sauce. If you love sushi, please come here!! Have only ate sushi here, not the rice plates. My friends have ordered the rice plates, and are HUGE in portion size. The sushi is served in large sizes too. VERY affordable here; good prices for the extra amount of food they give. With bento box specials less than $10 where you can order 3 items, Akagi definitely sounded like the place to go for lunch. They had quite a bit of choices for the combo bento ranging from teriyaki to shioyaki to sushi. I chose the beef teri, tempura, and salmon shio 3 item combo. The beef had a good amount of sweet teriyaki sauce and was nice and tender. Tempura was pretty average, but I was kind of saddened by the salmon shio. It was on the dry side and it did not come with daikon oroshii, so I didn't like that about it... There are many other selections on the menu, so I'll probably come back and try some other food, but I for sure appreciate the amount of food and variety that Akagi presents. read more

It's not super busy, but when it is (friday nights) you'll be waiting for a while. I love the bento boxes. Great food for the price. The sushi is good too. The lunch combinations were quite reasonably priced, so I didn't know what to expect when lunch came to our table. Soup, salad, rice, and 2 choices - priced at about $11; not bad for Japanese food. The ambiance was "cafeteria like" - rows of tables that seated 4 and a little dark. The food, however, was quite tasty. The teriyaki beef was cut in strips not too thin and very satisfying. The tempura was also very good and plentiful. The only thing I didn't care for what the salad dressing; the vinegar was a little too dominating for me. Walked into this place after working out at the gym so was wearing workout clothes. There were customers in the place, but no one was waiting to be seated. I asked if I could order takeout. The waiter first looked at me and then told me, "sorry 'buddy' we're too busy to serve you come back another time." I was shocked and felt judged by my workout clothes. I had been here before, a while back, and decided to give them another try today. I convinced my co-worker to try this spot with me. I called in pick up order for lunch for the both of us. Going off their menu listed in the photos on Yelp, I ordered a Deluxe Combination (Teriyaki Short Ribs, Chicken Katsu, and Salmon Sashimi) -$9.85- accoding to their menu. I also ordered a separate California Roll. My co-worker also ordered their Deluxe Combo. When I arrived for pick up, my order alone was just shy of $20. I thought the pricing was odd as they're menu stated cheaper pricing, but handed him my cash + tip. My co-worker's meal (Without the CA roll) was $14.16- again, menu stated $9.85. I brushed this off, and asked the waiter if he included our miso soups, with our order, he nodded 'yes'. When he handed me my to-go, the first thing I saw was Tuna sashimi, I told the waiter I had asked for Salmon Sashimi, the waiter told me they only make Tuna Sashimi, and do not offer Salmon Sashimi. This was really weird, because when he took my order over the phone and I asked for Salmon Sashimi, he didn't mention anything about not serving Salmon Sashimi. Again, brushed this off and left. When I arrived back at work, my co worker and I looked through our packaged lunches and there was no miso soup in our orders. I also wasn't given any sauce for my Chicken Katsu. Food wise- The CA rolls were warm and mushy, The Tuna Sashimi was slimy and gross! It was also grey and glossy. The teriyaki short ribs were very tough. They had overcharged us and didn't give us our miso soups or my Katsu sauce. Their food was not fresh. This lunch was NOT worth $20+. NEVER coming back here again. read more

I've been coming here for years, this the food is usually really good but they have the worst phone habits I have ever experienced. They pick up the phone and then just leave you there for over 5 mins waiting to be picked up again, often where they just hang up before you get a chance to order. I've been coming to Akagi on and off for years, and I have never been disappointed. The food and staff is always on point. The servers are efficient and polite, and their timing is never troublesome. They tables are cleared in a timely manner, they are quick with the orders, and everyone is always smiling ! Couldn't ask for a better waitstaff. Judging by the food, the chefs are always amazing as well ! I've been up and down the menu a lot in the past, but today I ordered the nigiri lunch and the Amaebi special. First things first, hot tea is always complimentary and brought to the table almost immediately. The menu appears big, but it is actually quite small in relation to sushi places I've been. In my experience, the smaller the menu, the better the food. The nigiri lunch is served with six pieces of assorted nigiri, six pieces of kappa maki, salad, miso soup, and a single crunchy piece of pickled vegetable. The fish was super fresh and the dressing on the salad is on the lighter side, which I really like. I got to pieces of tuna ( which is my least favorite sushi ), buy they were very deep in flavor, so I didn't mind. The Amaebi special was amazing. While the nigiri portion was chilly and gooey, topped with tobiko, the deep fried heads were crunchy and super flavorful. I love the stark contrast between the two sides of this dish, in flavor, texture, and presentation. Once again, Akagi, I am supremely satisfied with my meal ! read more

My go to spot... a real CHEERS, a place you can go and everyone will know your name. My kids grew up here. It's my second kitchen.

We haven't been here for 10 years and I agree with the other commenters, it has gone downhill. The server with the glasses was standing in the corner and there were NO customers. Never once did he check up on us. My teriyaki steak wasn't medium rare, I couldn't see any red. The portions are alot smaller. The sashimi were 4 small cube slices. The place does need an upgrade, it's dark and the carpets are dirty. The bathroom was tight, very small. I'm 110 lbs. and I could barely get my body inside to close the door. The other Japanese restaurant in SF we went to two weeks ago was much better value, they give 4 shrimps! And the service was better. It ruins the dining experience when a server stares out in space and never checks up on the customers. I can see that happening if the place was full house, but there were no other customers. He's lucky we didn't tip him 50 cents. Sends a message about the bad service. read more

So good. Food is 5 stars! I love eating here. You might miss it if you walk too fast because it is a hole in the wall restaurant. However, this restaurant has been my kid's and my favorite for years. A perfect little spot tucked away in San Bruno off El Camino Blvd. Sushi: ordered the California and Dragon Roll. The California roll was okay. Nothing special, just okay. The dragon roll on the other hand was outstanding! Large portions that didn't fall apart after one bite. Beef Teriyaki: Delicious! Cooked medium rare. I've gone to some restaurants where it tastes like the meat had been microwaved and then they just drown it in teriyaki sauce. That was definitely not the case here! The meat pretty much melts in your mouth and the sauce doesn't take away from the meat as well. Tempura: The carrots were a little undercooked but, the shrimp and brocoli were cooked to perfection. The batter is relatively light and not heavy like the kind you would experience at lesser restaurants. Service: It was hard to determine who was our waiter or waitress. Regardless, our food was served promptly and requesting a fork or another drink didn't seem like a chore. Yes, it was a Friday night when we went but, we only waited 2 minutes for a table and were eating 20 minutes after placing our order Value: A decent value considering the quality of the food that they serve. The staff is really nice and they provide great service. What i did not like was that the owners have a stupid rule that if you order take out your food does not come with miso soup! What kind of rule is that? I was sick and really wanted some miso soup. So I decided to order a bento box to go because they always come with miso soup. When I arrived to pick up my food they tell me that to go orders do not come with miso soup! I was so mad. That is one of the dumbest thing I have heard.
