To put it bluntly I was shocked at how bad my food was. Things went wrong with the first thing on our table: chips and salsa, and never got any better. The salsa was a wet mash of unripe tomatoes pieces and a few chunks on onion. No spice, no lime, no cilantro, no flavor. I would have been embarrassed to serve it in my kitchen. In light of the disappointment of the salsa I decided to order something simple, something easy. A burrito. I'm a vegetarian so I got the whole beans, not refried. The beans were ok but a bit undercooked. The cotija cheese sprinkled on the lettuce and tomato (which was served on the side of the burrito) was good. Everything else was pretty bad. I usually try to describe my food rather than just say it was good or bad, but I can't recall any flavors it had. I had been driving for 9 hours at that point so I ate the whole thing, but it was a challenge. I don't know about you but when I'm starving everything tastes good. Except that burrito. No one else in my party seemed to enjoy their food either. As soon as the door closed on our way out my step dad said "That's a four star restaurant?" (In reference to the 4 stars it had on yelp). The other reviews are so good I have to wonder what happened. It's possible, though unlikely, that everyone else who wrote a review has NO IDEA what Mexican food is supposed to taste like. I grew up eating homemade Mexican food and have lived in and near the barrios of LA for a long time so my standards for Mexican food are high, but this is California not Kentucky; I assume everyone knows at least something about Mexican food. It's also possible, and more likely, that the restaurant was having real problems that day. Maybe the food is usually better than this, but I honestly don't think I have the stomach to give this place another shot. read more

I was persuaded to have the chicken enchilada but I chose pork (which was whispered under the servers breath for choice of meats) & chicken. I wasn't asked how my meal was until I was done. Best bet: eat off the specials menu. Amigo's is our "regular" restaurant - sometimes we go once a week. The key here is to eat off of the specials menu - either the daily specials or the ongoing ones - the rest of the menu is just average. My "test" dish for a good Mexican restaurant is their carne asada soft tacos and salsa and Amigo's are just so-so. Because of this, I didn't think I liked them, until we came back and tried the specials. Also, you can ask for hot stuff for the salsa and they'll bring out minced peppers and spice to add. Their chips are good when they aren't overcooked, and their salsa is usually decent, but varies. If you are into salsa, try Las Palmas on east Line - they have a salsa bar. But back to Amigo's - their specials are fantastic! I usually get Tacos Acapulco (fruit juice marinated chicken tacos) and my husband usually gets Enchiladas Autlan. I've tried all of the daily specials and almost all of the regular menu specials and they are ALL very good. And VERY filling. You can order any of the specials ala carte if you don't want to be stuffed, but their rice and beans are also good if you want them. It's not traditional Mexican - but dishes with mango salsa and cranberries, tasty marinades and sauces - really interesting (but not terribly spicy) flavors. If I want hot and spicy and more traditional Mexican fare, I'll go to one of the 7 other Mexican restaurants in Bishop - such as La Casita for their Chili Colorado, or Las Palmas for their salsa bar. But for consistently delicious gourmet dishes, Amigo's specials are great! So, stick to the specials and you won't be disappointed. I definitely recommend Amigo's and we generally take out of town guests here, or to Yamatani (for great sushi), Whiskey Creek (for 1/2 price happy hour dining in the bar) or Imperial Gourmet (for good Chinese in a nice atmosphere). read more

Hey Amigos, I'm going to tell you what to expect before you walk-in to this establishment in Bishop while going through 395. With so many places to choose from, I'm gonna share my experience here. Likes: 1) Good Mexican food and menu options. It's not like you've walked into a Mexican taqueria, but a good place for Mexican food that has a teeny bit of catering for more American tastes. A bit like Chevy's... 2) Very friendly staff willing to provide you refills on your chips and salsa. 3) Good amount of seating, though there is a wall in between with an opening in it. Seems like the left side of the place is where to sit. 4) Plenty of parking outside on the street (side) and parking lot (in the back). Dislike: The only thing I experienced that I didn't like was that it took a LONG time for the food to come out. We probably waited about 10 mins to order food and 30 mins to get our food. And one of our dished came out wrong (asked for no sour cream). Which I wouldn't mind if we weren't driving back to LA and trying to be efficient for time. What we hoped to be a 45 min break turned out to be 75. *in the end... I'll come back and give it another try. The food was good: I had the #14 combo, which had a taco, tamale, enchilada with rice, beans and pico de gallo... I also added the grill Jalapeno and green onions for $1 (so yummy if you like spicy). Very good food, but restaurant in need of a remodel (please!). You can smell grease in the carpet. Not that that's a bad thing if the grease is carrying the aroma of fresh tortilla chips, which it is. Speaking of tortillas, try the tortilla soup. Ask for a slice of lemon to drizzle, toss in a crumbled handful of some of those fresh greasy chips, add a spoon of their homemade salsa, and like wow. Heavenly. What else... Service is mixed, but mostly good. Their specials are pretty special. Be forewarned, unlike most mex restaurants in town they don't serve refrescos or horchita, which is a shame because it would go so well with the food. Finally, a note to the owner: please please get new carpet and until you do please don't have staff pushing a carpet sweeper around when you have customers, which is only step better than putting chairs on the tables before the last customer leaves. read more

Was in town for the weekend for a hiking trip in Big Pine. Decided to try this place for dinner. It was great! The restaurant is small and pretty basic looking but the food is amazing. The staff is also very friendly. The chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. So much that we probably ate more chips than we should have before our entree came. I had a chicken enchilada and tamales. Both were good but I really liked the enchilada. The rice had a unique taste from any other Mexican restaurant I've been to but it was great. Others at my table had burritos and they all were just as happy with their meals as I was. If definitely recommend giving this restaurant a chance. read more

Even in 97°F (Bishop) weather, I crave soup. I prefer broth soups (vs cream based) and their chicken tortilla soup was awesome! Slightly on the salty side but lots veggies and rice and tiny bits of chicken - my ideal soul! The chips and salsa are fantastic as well. Had the pork (soft) taco and the meats were plentiful. The taco fell apart (because of the plethora of pork) so I ate it like a savage and looked like something exploded on my plate but I don't care about etiquette when the food is good! And it was good! Embrace the enjoyable enchiladas. Given the emphasis on enchiladas on both the regular and weekly specials, we only ordered enchiladas. In the enchiladas Autlan, no single ingredient stood-out, but it was the combined flavors of the spicy beef, corn tortilla, and green sauce with avocado and tomatillo that I loved. The flavor combination of Grandma's pork enchiladas with red sauce didn't fully meld (sorry grams), but I appreciated the home spun type of Mexican cooking on display. I sensed that the cook took extra care and wasn't a bored line chef slopping out food as fast as possible. A Mexican restaurant named "Amigo's" in a touristy small town would normally mean boring, blunt dishes with big servings and with lots of cheese. Not the case. I mean the portions are pretty big, and there is cheese, but this is one of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever been. Meh, just ok. There are better Mexican options in Bishop. Like La Casita. We decided to try this place because I had not been here before. We ordered takeout, went to Wilson's to browse around, and then got our food and headed back to the Thunderbird. I got a carne asada burrito a la carte. It was certainly pretty big and filling, but the carne asada wasn't very flavorful. I find it best to judge a Mexican place by it's carne asada or carnitias. It was busy the night we went, but they had great service, our food came out (for 5 people) in about 15 mins, and the food was great. I recommend the Suizas enchiladas and the Cancun enchilada special. Also, don't be fooled, the side of rice and beans are not just talking up space on the plate...All five of us finished them. Stopped by Amigo's again on our way through Bishop, we plan our trips around eating our meals at Amigo's when going through Bishop. As you can read on some of the reviews they have changing specials, adding new things, always great food. I wish it was closer to where we lived I'd be there a lot more. When passing through these little towns on 395 I never really expected much but I learned look for the little places that you might just drive by, don't drive by Amigo's anymore give it a try. The amazing thing to me is I know these little restaurant sometimes don't have a good day but I have never had A bad meal when we been there. My wife always get something with beef or pork in it, I always get something with chicken and no cheese, they always do everything we ask, love the service, love the place, will definitely be back. I eat Mexican food many times a week considering I work in Santa Ana, CA, which is pretty much what I would call "Tijuana North." Needless to say, I come across quite a few authentic Mexican food joints in my wanderings. Try the Chile Verde at Amigos. It's really good. And as someone mentioned before, the chips are addicting. If you are in Bishop and are in need of a Mexican food fix, do yourself a favor and stop at Amigos. I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

Found this place on the way home from Mammoth. Awesome food. We will hit this place up any time we are in the area. And since the snow is so awesome at Mammoth we may get to hit it up again this season :-) Now about the restaurant... I had the special, pork enchilada with a sweat/spicy sauce... AWESOME! The rice and beans on the side were good as well. I forgot what the wife had but she liked it. The chips and salsa were out of this world. We ordered guacamole and had some left over, they put it in a separate container in our doggy bag and put in another serving of chips. Service was good and fast. This place probably gets really busy on Sunday's because it's small, good and on the way home for San Diego and LA bound skiers and snowboarders. This is our little place to stop when we come to Bishop or after a backpacking trip when we are ravenous!. If you love Mexican food, and have a little adventure in you, then this is the place. The food is just a little on the unique side and everything is delicious! If you can get past the homemade chips and awesome salsa without being stuffed try something with the smoky chipotle sauce which is absolutely fantastic. We have tried the Enchiladas Yucatan, the Smoky Pork Tostada, Street tacos, a chicken dish that is marinated in fruit (to die for), and the beans - the best we have ever had. Amigos is very small and fills up fast. They are across the street from Jack's Waffle shop (another good place to eat in Bishop). So if you like Mexican food with a twist, this place rocks! read more

As a local, I've been here several times in the past year. Previously I had avoided the place due to numerous cases of Montezuma's revenge I'd experienced each time I'd gone. However, that problem has since been resolved. I have my favorite dishes here including the nachos, or the taco/enchilada combo. You can't go wrong ordering the house soup. While it is largely Americanized versions of Mexican favorites, don't worry. It's still good enough to order up and enjoy. The service here is friendly and they do pay close attention to you, and even special offers don't throw them off. If you go here for lunch, they're usually really good about getting your dish to you rather quickly. For me, this place has been best for a business lunch. Don't be afraid to order up on the chips and salsa because that's a tasteful perquisite. Also, beware because they don't take American Express here. read more

I go to Amigos as often as possible. I love the food and their pork medallion enchiladias with mango are awesome. I really like the salsa and guacamole. Never had a bad guac day there. I find that sometimes they are a litle slow in service but since I was raised to have patience unlike a lot of flatlanders who come through town I have time for a nice conversation with my wife. read more
