Ah, nothing like their hot gooey enchiladas combo plate after a ski trip :) Had to come here after we were denied at Bishop Burger Barn (temporarily closed that day, wah). Their stuff tends to be on the bland side, so I always request Tapatio. Service has always been pretty good and 10% Yelp check-in discount! This place good when its good! the food is always excellent, however, the service isn't always great. We have been there twice and experienced poor service. The first time our waitress was rude and glared at us when asked if something could be made vegetarian, and the second time, we had to walk over to the kitchen and ask the waitress to refill our waters and chips, even though she walked by our table and had seen our empty water glasses and chip basket at the edge of the table. However, there are some great waitresses who really redeem the place! I am all about service, and these ladies really made the whole experience worth it. Best salsa in bishop, hands down! AY CARAMBA! Being a native San Diegan, it is hard to find Mexican food this far north that has me this excited. Here are a few reasons why you should support this local business: 1) Everything I have ordered has been delicious. My favorites are the chile relleno, fish tacos, and steak fajitas. mmm! 2) There is one waitress who works there and runs the place flawlessly. 3) From the moment you walk through the door, you can tell the family who runs this restaurant cares about their business and has pride in how they treat guests and serve their food. 4) Because supporting local small business is awesome! 5) Great Prices! Stopped in Bishop for the night on our way to Yosemite & found Astorga's after yelping for a good Mexican restaurant. Astorga's came up with the highest reviews so we decided to check it out. Our family loves Mexican food & Astorga's did not disappoint. The waiter (owner?) was super nice & attentive & made sure our drinks were refilled regularly & that we were happy with every aspect of our meal. Astorga's is right around the corner from our house, and it used to be even closer, but we hardly ever went before because it was in a strip mall location in the Rite Aid shopping center and just didn't have a great ambience. Wow did that change when they moved to the old Firehouse Restaurant (across from the Fire Station on 395 and See Vee)! They really did a nice job fixing up the inside with warm, bright paint, enlarging the kitchen, and even rehabbing the outdoor seating in front. It's very enjoyable to go in there, or sit out under the trees in front, now. (although, depending on traffic on 395, it could be pretty noisy outside - it's still nice) But I swear the food has gotten better since they moved, too! Their salsa is my favorite of all the Mexican restaurants in Bishop, though they are a little light on the chips - ask for extras up front if you like chips and salsa. Every time we go in I find something else to love - today it was the "Carne Mexicana" which is made with their own version of ranchera sauce - fresh jalapenos, onions, red potatoes, tomatoes and beef served with warm tortillas - the sauce is special and very, very tasty. I recommend anything made with it!! Once when we went in they were doing barbacoa out front, and had some special beans that I think had this sauce in them, as well as chunks of bacon and jalapeno - they were SO good!! Today they had horchata, which is a real treat, and it was perfect. The food is very homemade, or should I say, estilo casero. It's probably the most "Mexican" of our many Mexican restaurants. Definitely worth a visit (or several) to find your own favorites! read more

We tried out this place after a day skiing, and were CRAVING Mexican food. So, obviously, we needed to be warmed up by a hot plate of taquitos and guac. I was surprised that it was kind of empty, but we did get there at 3:00pm, which is a weird lunch hour. My one gripe is that there was no soup of the day, even though there was a big sign that said "SOUP OF THE DAY". Hello, my fingers are frozen and i'm chilled to the bone. The waitress said, "It would've been tortilla soup." Oh, great. Thanks. That's my favorite. Wah wah. We ordered the taquitos, which were a bit dry, but ok. We each ordered one of the combination plates, with enchiladas, and tamales. Not bad. The warm chips and salsa were good! Will we be back? Sure, if there's soup! Guess it was $1 extra for each request?? ...and what the burrito was really full of was green and red peppers. sure i love peppers, but not as the main ingredient of this particular burrito. fail. big time fail. i was famished after a long backpack trip so all i wanted was to eat. was driving south my the time i realized little guac, no green onions, no cilantro, wheres the tomatoes, etc.. $13 for what i did not order is rip off. We camped in the RV Park across the street. Loving Mexican food, I scoped it out as we drove into the park. After getting our trailer set up, we walked over. I ordered a chili relleno, shredded beef taco, rice & beans. Delicious. The relleno was the best I've had in a long time. The taco was really good, as were the beans. The salsa was really good. The rice was ok, but with some added salsa on it - yum. The staff was attentive. It was super busy, but our waiter did a great job. I can hardly wait to go back! read more

3-3.5 stars. The food is certainly more than ample, the location convenient (to us passing through on our way back home to LA), and the staff was accommodating though not especially attentive. Nearby tables were all regulars which is generally a good sign. Chips were okay (though seemingly store bought rather than homemade), the salsa had a nice little bite to it. I ordered the chilaquiles and the mister had the breakfast chile relleno. We could easily have shared one meal between the two of us, and we both arrived hungry. We stopped here at Astorga's after an appointment in Bishop. My boyfriend had a craving for chile rellenos and after looking through reviews for several Mexican places, settled on eating here. The parking's a little strange - there's another restaurant that didn't appear to be open and the back of some homes. When we walked into the restaurant, the first thing my boyfriend noticed they had a large jug of horchata and it had a very intimate feel to the place. We were seated and started looking over the menu. It took a while to get a bowl of chips and salsa, but it was delicious when it arrived - it had a fresh yet smokey taste and was very similar to the salsa I make at home. My boyfriend ordered a horchata and other than commenting on how thin it was, said it was delicious. I tried a little even though I don't care for horchata (it just seems like super watered down milk to me) and it was very good. It tasted like a liquid churro. We finally decided to split a chile relleno burrito and a chicken pupusa. The burrito was so yummy and satisfied my boyfriend's craving. We were quite disappointed with the pupusa. There was a lot of water on the plate for some reason and the chicken was bland. The pupusa shell (or whatever it's called. The masa on the bottom) was very clearly premade and not very good. As a whole, it was edible, but disappointing. I do admit we're rather biased. The first pupusas we ever had were made from scratch by an old Mexican woman who cooked where I worked and to date we have not found pupusas that compare to hers, so they had a high standard to meet in our eyes. It's not their fault (but seriously, what was with all the water on the plate?) Our biggest gripe was this: we waited quite a while for our food and when it arrived, it was barely lukewarm. It was a little busy, so we assumed the kitchen was backed up, but it seems that the food sat around for a while before making it to our table. Overall, other than said issues, the experience was very good. There was only one waitress, but as small as the dining room is, I don't think it could fit any more waitresses. She was very nice. It felt like we were on a date and the prices didn't break our budget. If we had more time and money (not that their prices are too high for entrees, we had a tight budget that day), we would have liked to try some of their other dishes...the sizzling fajita plate another diner looked amazing and smelled divine. There was a local group of elderlies that seemed to meet there regularly (which means the atmosphere and staff is warm and friendly). I haven't checked out any other Mexican places in town yet, but I would totally try Astorga's again (I just hope the food is a little warmer next time). read more

The Chilaquiles were horrible - the eggs were a weird consistency and looked like a pancake, a canned orange enchilada sauce was poured over everything. Bishop is rich when it comes to Mexican restaurants, and this one is the best in my opinion! My favorite meals are the enchiladas suiza, the grilled veggie burrito, and the Monte burrito. The salsa served with chips is nice and chunky with good flavor. I also like that black beans are a choice. It is family run with good service. They have recently expanded their dining area to accommodate large groups and also added outdoor seating. My only complaint is they are still using Styrofoam to go boxes. Hopefully they read this review and make the move to more environmentally friendly materials. read more

Little off of the main street of Bishop, which is no problem :) There were 10 of us, a noisy group, @ separate checks and all, the staff were not even blink. Chips and salsa coming up right away, BUT It was taken us a while before she came back to take our orders...maybe due to right at dinner time.. on Friday night .. so restaurant was pretty pack. Our waiters said: No soup"of the day", as they 'adapted to summer menu' although it was still on April :) I ordered a lenggua & a shredded beef taco which is pretty good, do not forget to ask for 'more salsa' .. it only came in little bitty container .. **Othermember of party has buritos, carne asada, quesadilla all .. they all commented OK taste. Friend of mine ordered fish tacos, seems she is not too happy ?? I would not base my ratings on others that is why deserves 4 stars. Will come back & recommends to any Bishop visitor. read more

Excellent. I had the taco buffet. Wife had fajitas trio. My son had a carne Assad burrito. All were delicious.

Quick stop in here with my bebe before we head out to Mammoth. Seated immediately and was quickly served with chips and salsa. The adorable busser kid had to break my heart to let me know they were out of horchata as it was heating up. He was really sweet about it. All good, though! Love me some breakfast served ALL DAY! The Monte Burrito was awesome. Huge Carne Asada burrito with two over easy eggs on top with ranchero salsa. Mmmm mmmm mmmmm... Bebe had the Chicken Enchiladas and pretty much licked the plate clean. Good stuff!! Service was great and attentive. The sweet busser boy and our server, Sylvia was on top of things. And she had no problem taking the bill back to honor the 10% off check in discount.
