I needed a strawberry cake for a birthday, so drove here to purchase one. Parking is plenty at this plaza. I was browsing around while waiting for the very nice female staff at the front preparing the cake. I saw they had mixed fruit croissants and man oh man, they were huge. I can have half today and half tomorrow. That's a win win! Also purchased the banana bread. I was able to meet the very sociable and extremely nice baker. We were conversing about how his custards and pastries aren't overly sweet. Thank you for not making it absurdly sweet. He also trained in Paris during his early years. He saw I was reading the sign for pre-ordering Durian cake. I saw it was written in Vietnamese. He asked if I was Vietnamese and I said yes and that I would most likely want to try the Durian cake one day. He was very nice in that he gave me a sample of the plain croissant with custard filling. It was delish and not sweet as I expected. Yep, I bought 5 croissants as well. Good thing I'm sharing all these pastries. Can't wait to dig into the strawberry cake. A little late on this review, but this place is well worth its five stars! My friend loves Japanese cheesecake and Uncle Tetsu wasn't going to cut it for a birthday cake. Instead, I was able to order a custom Japanese cheesecake birthday cake from Bakery 101 with two days notice. I was able to personalize the writing and get a late (8 pm) pickup! The staff member who helped me was so friendly and communicated by text to ensure that I had been appropriately charged (had to prepay) and that my message was spelled correctly. It wasn't cheap, but well worth the price. Bakery 101 has a huge selection of different French and Japanese cakes and pastries. I will be back to try them! read more

We needed a last minute birthday cake for my small family a few days after thanksgiving and were looking for another elegant cake that wasn't too sweet and Bakery 101 was our top choice on Yelp after some searching. We ended with a 6' Strawberry Shortcake and it was delicious. Not too sweet, full of fruit, and layered with light and fluffy cream. Even their smallest size was more than enough for our family of 5 and we had plenty of leftovers. Only drawback was that we thought the cake was a bit much given there were three thick layers of cake inside a very tall 6' cake. They definitely aren't skimping and give very generous portions! We originally wanted the matcha strawberry cake but was told that one was preorder only so we'll be back next time! Service was great, the nice lady at the counter immediately greeted us when we walked in despite already in the middle of helping another customer and then her husband checked in on us a few minutes later to see if we'd been helped. They even apologized for the wait (there was no need to as we were standing inside for less than 5 minutes!). They were so full of care and thoughtful of their guests. This is one the two local bakeries I frequent to buy cakes. I like to support small businesses as much as possible. Bakery 101 is pricier than the other bakery I turn to sometimes, but their cakes are also superior so you get what you pay for I guess. Bakery 101 is also much easier to do business with because they have nicer staff and longer hours. They always have a great assortment of cakes if you need a cake to take somewhere or serve at a gathering. The quality of their packaging is also more elevated than the other bakery I use when in a bind. If I don't want to take my chances, I usually order ahead. My husband's favorite cake is strawberry shortcake and Bakery 101's strawberry shortcake is top notch. The tres leches cake seems to be the most popular. I've taken that to get togethers and people have raved about how good it is. It's a little too wet for me but I'm not generally a tres leches fan but I still eat it and enjoy it. I can't wait to try one of their cheesecakes. I'm also a big fan of Swiss Rolls because they seem to have the perfect ratio of cake to cream and they always have them here. read more

Wow, probably the best matcha cake I've ordered from a bakery. I've never been satisfied with matcha cakes so I typically made it myself but I read some good reviews about the ones from here so I thought why not give it a try? I asked for a matcha cake with matcha cream and ordered it 5 days in advance. It was $50 total but they required a $30 deposit via Zelle and the rest to be paid in person. The matcha cream was the cherry on top of the fluffy interior. Without the request, I think it would've been regular cream but the matcha flavor really shined through in every bite because of it. There were 3 layers of sponge cake all sandwiched between cream but I didn't think it was too sweet at all, the ultimate Asian compliment. It comes topped with fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. They say it serves 6 but it could definitely be more depending on how hungry your guests are. The workers were very nice and it was a smooth, quick process once we arrived. They also sell cakes by the slices and I definitely have my eye on the taro one so I'll probably come back for that next time. read more

Overall, pretty decent food and nice service. Price was not outrageous but a bit pricey. We decided to stop by for a quick breakfast and took a strawberry roll to-go. The cream was super light and airy but I definitely wished that the cake itself was a bit fluffier. It had a grainy texture which wasn't super pleasant, especially when being eaten against the fluffy cream. I enjoyed the use of actual strawberries although I wish the strawberry flavor had been a bit more prominent. The strawberry role was around the $6 range, which is a bit pricey, especially in comparison to other Chinese bakery rolls. Nothing notable to comment about on the service. Owner was cordial and spoke Mandarin! Not on the top of my list of places to try again but definitely had good pastries if you're in the area. read more

I called in a day or two before Christmas searching for a Yule log and luckily they had a couple left! Upon coming in, it was a quaint bake shop, but super busy for the holidays. I think that says a lot about their hard work and quality. During the wait, they gave mini slices of their strawberry cake as a sample and it was so fluffy! I appreciate how consistent this bakery is with their strawberry shortcake. I've ordered this cake for 5-6 birthdays and it never disappoints. It's fluffy and not overly sweet with the perfect amount of cream. I usually scrape off the cream when I have cake but I love everything about this cake. I'm not sure if she's the owner, but the woman who works up front and takes order is so helpful and kind. This is a MUST try. I rarely leave reviews but this bakery is a rare find. These are honestly the best pastries I've ever had. My friend and I tried the blueberry cheese croissant, the scone, and some mini cookies. What I loved most is that they are not too sweet--which is so hard to find. A lot of places overdo the sugar or artificial flavors, but here you can actually taste the quality of the fresh ingredients. I really hope they keep it this way and don't change a thing. The ladies were very nice, too. I wish they served tea, but even if they don't, I'm still a regular now. I hope this business prospers. read more

The owner is such a sweet lady. The bakery is nestled in the same plaza as Target and amongst many other shops. You can find it in between Crumbl and Tacos Madre. It's a cute little bakery that offers cakes, pastries, and cookies. When you order cakes, they offer little placards if it fits the occasion (I.e. birthday, graduation, etc). I've bought a few cakes from here already. We've tried the tres leches and tiramisu. The tres leches is ok, not the usual flavors but it is good. Our go to has to be the tiramisu cake! Honestly one of the best ones I've had. It has the perfect amount of sweetness to it. Everyone always praises it when I bring it! **November 2022: Tuesday Night Visit** I was in a time crunch and needed a fancy birthday cake for a weeknight event. My go to bakeries just were further than my time allowed and I needed something close to my chiropractor's office lol. Regardless, I found this bakery located about a mile away and the 5 star rating peaked my interest. Bakery 101 is closed on Mondays so unfortunately I couldn't go in the day before to check out their cakes and decided I would give them a call on Tuesday morning. I rarely wait till the day-of for reservations, but I'm picky and indecisive - a terrible combination. So, I called on Tuesday morning and spoke to the owner. I told her I needed a birthday cake to feed 10 and she recommended either the 8 inch Strawberry Shortcake (best seller) or the Tres Leches for $55. I decided on the former and asked for a 5:15pm pickup that evening. The Strawberry Shortcake truly is a very classy cake and owner provided a small "Happy Birthday" stand as well. When it came time to eat the cake at the party everyone was very impressed with the taste. This Japanese/French style cake had real fresh strawberries (versus canned) and the frosting had a nice mousse like texture that was not too sweet (the perfect asian dessert). My friends and I had already finished a big dinner beforehand and yet we all finished our slice of cake (and we were each cut a pretty big slice each). We ended up having 8 in our party attend, but this cake can feed 10 people all with big slices! I highly recommend Bakery 101 and am curious about their other flavors! This place is a cute bakery located close to the South Coast Mall! My friends and I got their cinnamon twist, which was sooo good! It was sweet while not being too overbearing. Not sure what happened, but when I called to order a birthday cake ahead of time, the staff on the other line just cut me off and insisted I come in person. After visiting and placing the order, I went the next day to pick up the cake. I gave them the receipt, and after I witnessed the lady packing up the cake, they took a call and suddenly LEFT it on the counter before even handing it to me. I watched her return to pack up another cake picked up by ANOTHER customer who had just arrived. Another employee came out from the back and tended to the customers who just arrived, glancing at me every now and then before I guess she took pity and finally asked me if I had been helped. I told her I was waiting for my pick-up order, to which she requested the receipt I had already given to the other employee. I observed them looking around for said receipt before giving up and asking me for what flavor the cake was that I had ordered. What?! They then noticed the packaged cake that was left on the counter for me, followed by back and forth bantering in another language, and then one of them attempted to open the box. She seemed absolutely perplexed before turning back around to me - she obviously was uncertain what cake was in the box. I felt deflated when she handed me the item. What I was bringing to the birthday?! The miscommunication, the fact that they completely overlooked the order, and the staff's inexperience was abysmal and disappointing. If you are a fan of matcha-forward cakes with matcha whipped cream, this one will definitely leave you satisfied. We ordered the matcha cake for a birthday. The same beautiful one you see on the banner of their yelp page. As soon as we got home to open it, it had lost all structure and was collapsing. We immediately brought it back and asked them if they could touch it up and try to rescue it. We didn't ask for money back or a replacement, but simple to see if they could just get it structural again. They took it back and tried. However, they spent the whole time gaslighting us and telling us that we turned too hard and it's our fault the cake ended up like this. That we should know what we did and this is our fault. I don't know about you, but I've bought plenty of cakes before and they survive the drive home fine. They took it back and this is the final results they gave us. The cake was slightly falling apart before and I should've taken photos before we brought it back but they massacred it in retaliation. Utterly unprofessional, rude, and disrespectful. It's a little pricey for the size/quality of the cake you get, and they're pretty stingy with the other offerings you usually get for free with other cake shops in the same price range: they are hesitant to give you cheap paper plates/forks, charges you for basic stick candles, and will offer a cheap plastic happy birthday sign before offering to write on the cake itself. I recommend going elsewhere for better quality, cheaper prices, and better service without the nickel and diming. read more

I love their Black Forest Cake. It's so moist and the cherry filling is sooo yummy. It's a bit pricey. But it's worth it. The bakery is very small. Only one staff member (or the owner or the manager???) is working when I usually go there. There is no place to eat inside. But there are tables and chairs outside the bakery. read more
