It isn't often one finds a spot with WOW items on the menu. But that's what we recently discovered at Bar Becky. The server was knowledgable and very helpful, even offering a taste of two wines we chose. She suggested the Brussels Sprouts, which were crisp, with pieces of pepperoni and drizzled with warm honey. She was correct - could not get enough of the delicious flavors. On to the entrees, one a pistachio pesto with kale and crispy garbanzo beans, the other an extra treat with shredded lamb and a twist pasta in creme fraiche with small pieces of zucchini and a hint of fennel. Even though the dishes presented looked like small portions, there was enough to have a "to go" box. Dessert was an olive oil cake with a lemon curd sauce, also excellent. We will return and try many of the other menu items to see if they, too, have the WOW factor. read more

We went for "Dine out Long Beach" which offered a prix fix menu: 3 courses for $40. (Starter, Main, Dessert) My girlfriend and I both ordered this menu with different selections for each course. Our server introduced himself and then a different person came to take our drink and food orders. He seemed to struggle with remembering everything we were asking for... but didn't write anything down. Drinks: don't remember exactly what we got - but they were both solid! It matched our expectations for the experience. Starters: we ordered the focaccia with anchovy dip... but our server forgot to put that in and brought us the salads first. I had the Caesar and she had an endive salad - again, both were pretty solid. I think we preferred the Caesar but the endive had some interesting textures and flavors. Main: Absolute train wreck here. She ordered the "alla Vodka" and I ordered the "pomodoro". Wasn't sure what to expect because the menu just described the sauce. What was delivered was a bowl of what I assume was Barilla Penne pasta, with maybe like a Prego or Ragu sauce? We both took our first bites and were each like..."what is happening here?... how are they serving this at a seemingly nice restaurant?" THIS IS NOT HYPERBOLE - I've had FAR had better pasta dishes at Applebees. Dessert - after tossing most of our pasta into a to go container because we couldn't stomach any more - we had 2 pleasant but uninspired desserts. I had the semi fredo, she had the chocolate. Hers was better than mine which was basically just vanilla ice cream with a slightly better texture. In total - dinner with a cocktail a piece ran us 110 before tip. I wanted to go back to give it another try but I woke up this morning still mad that they served me that pasta. I don't think I can run the risk. read more

A revelation, a delight, a love letter to vegetables. Just had one of the best meals of my life here. We were lucky enough to sit at the bar, and the chefs were all so kind and friendly. The standouts were the focaccia (truly don't understand the couple of comments on here saying it was greasy...it was perfect), the carrots, the tomatoes and onions (my personal favorite), and the steak. I've been wanting to try Bar Becky for a while now, after hearing good things about their flavor profiles of the food. So for the TL;DR crowd - food is conceptually unique but poorly executed. Let me go on. The table ordered the beet & goat cheese salad and seared scallops to start. The dressing overwhelmed the palette but the crispy Farro and pomegranate offered interesting textural components. The seared scallops (3 on the plate) seemed soggy, for lack of a better description, like they'd been soaking in tap water or something, so they didn't seem to retain any of their natural brine. Grape tape name was more like thinly sliced grapes, were drowned in a fish sauce, which my boyfriend later described as "smelling like vagina." In both appetizers, the ratio of ingredients just wasn't balanced enough to get the flavor profile they seemed to be going for. We also ordered the rigatoni with pesto and mushroom rotolo. The rigatoni pasta was perfectly cooked and the pesto had great flavor, but the kale was unevenly chopped, making certain bites a little more cumbersome than others. I really wanted to love the mushroom rotolo, but it was just dry, and the goat cheese tallegio took over the flavors of the mushrooms, so that was a bummer. The Mama's carrots were perfectly cooked, but again, the flavor balance was off, erring on the overly sweet side, when what I wanted to taste more of was the burrito. I will say that the roasted duck stole the show! This dish was presented nicely, the duck was PERFECTLY cooked with a crispy outside and medium rare inside, and the celery root puree and cranberry sauce complimented the dish without taking over, largely in part to not smothering the duck. The olive oil cake with lemon curd was a tad dry, but very flavourful, especially when dredged through the lemon curd. Lastly, the servers were very pleasant and kind, but the pacing was ill timed between courses and slow overall. The ambiance was nice - not overly crowded, but I was close enough to my neighbor to get all the details on how her diet was failing. Our table was the last to leave, and the servers were mostly subtle in pressuring us to go. So, thus the score of 3 stars. Not bad, but not fantastic. Thanks for reading! read more

This place was a HIT. From the open kitchen concept, to the amazingly attentive staff, friendly chefs including Jonathan himself, & the delicious food I will be a repeat customer. The menu highlights for me were the carrots & panna cotta. Two dishes I expected to be good but was blown out of the water. The little intricacies & carefully created elements made for amazing dishes. Everyone here was so beyond friendly & seemed to genuinely have a passion for food which is always so special to see. A couple of months ago we celebrated our anniversary at Bar Becky and the dining experience was so wonderful that we returned for hubby's birthday. The atmosphere has a cool, yet home style vibe and the staff are so warm and welcoming. They are engaging, gracious, and treat all customers like they are friends and family. The food is fresh, bursting with flavor, and beautifully plated. From appetizers all the way through desserts, Bar Becky exceeded our expectations. I was able to make a reservation the same day. It was busy when we arrived but we were seated right away. Unfortunately, they didn't have the chicken and dumplings, but everything we ordered was great. We had the bread with anchovy dip, the endive salad, the octopus appetizer, the carrots, and the seafood pasta. We actually ordered too much but it was still good the next day. The staff were all very friendly and next time, my husband wants to try the spaghetti. We also want to leave room for dessert. read more

Bar Becky was a last minute decision, but one we are extremely happy we made. We came in a little late, around 7, and ran into some friends sitting at the chef's counter. Asked to join, and got lucky that there wasn't another reservation, and got seated. The brothers that run the restaurant are personable and very generous with their time; obviously loving their work and creating an experience for their clients. We ordered the seasonal chokes, some meatballs, a pistachio pesto pasta, and the chicken and dumplings... All fantastic, all touched with love. Becky, by the way, is the brothers's mother... And their respect for her is apparent in how they relayed this story as well as in the food that they serve under her name. Truly amazing experience... We'll be back as often as we can. read more

Many years ago I saw an interview with Daniel Boulud in which he was asked what makes a chef truly exceptional. He responded that a great chef can take the most humble ingredient and elevate it to something magical ( I think of Keller's roasted chicken at French Laundry ). Chef Jonathon fits that niche; he can turn a simple carrot into a highlight of the meal or a potato into small bites of OMG goodness. My wife and daughters surprised me with dinner at Bar Becky and it was even better than before. My advice - get in here soon, because it will be the HOT SPOT once the word spreads; and it will. We basically had 70% of the menu and could not stop eating - " maybe just one more bite". Walking out I summed up the evening in four words: " great food; great dude". And remember - order the carrots - you will thank me, or rather Jonathon for a veg dish any chef at any Michelin level restaurant would be proud to serve. read more

I have never in my life had a restaurant experience like this. My boyfriend brought me here and although I am the pickiest eater, Chef Johnathon was able to get me to try everything we ordered. All the food we tried was absolutely to die for. The pork belly melted in my mouth, the carrots are my absolute favorite and the octopus was so beyond good. There is not one bad thing on this menu. The vibes, the ambiance, the food and the hospitality was top notch. I will absolutely be back and will be recommending this amazing restaurant to everyone. 100/5 stars. Everything was beautiful, from the interior to the wine, cocktails, the food and last but not least, the staff. The focaccia was a magical experience, squid ink pasta was amazing, grilled octopus insane, the carrots are to die for and the panna cotta made me tear up from how good it was. My girlfriend is on the pickier side when it comes to eating but Chef Johnathan was not only able to introduce her to new foods but was able to make it "the best meal she has ever had". If I could only bring one thing to a deserted island it would be Chef Johnathan and his binchōtan grill. We finished all of our food and I was so full but I didn't feel nasty and bloated because they use the best ingredients. I cannot wait to come back with more of my friends and family and try everything else on the menu. Everything was so delicious and the chefs/staff were very friendly and sweet. Great food, great service. We did the tasting menu, and the portions are not tiny, so by the end we couldnt even finish! Stand out courses were the duck pate with focaccia and the sashimi charcuterie. Soooooo yummy. 5/5 stars because this place was so delicious and we sat at the bar and met the chefs. Let me start by saying I was so excited to go based on excellent reviews. Sadly, we weren't overwhelmed. On the plus side we were off to an amazing start with housemade focaccia, ricotta and prociutto. I had the three course prix fixe. Started with the delicata squash, blue cheese and endive. Pretty good. Second was penne with vodka sauce. Absolutely average at best. Penne was definitely out of a box (my mistake I thought pastas were housemade) and the sauce was spicy with no depth. Plated pretty sloppy as well... kind of smeared, small bowl, no garnish. I enjoyed the olive oil cake but didnt change my life. My husbands pasta was dry with blackened edges. Also, felt like we were a bit rushed even though no one was waiting. May have been an off night. Also, whenever a server isn't excited to share their favorites I know I'm cooked. As we walked out and saw how lively and warm the restaurant across the way was I was a little sad we didn't go there instead. Sad. I had such high hopes! read more

Tonight had what turned out to be a fabulous meal! It started out a little slow as we waited 30 min for food to arrive. Due to a technical issue with the printer our order hadn't shown at our table. As a result we were treated to a fantastic tasting menu as food just kept showing up at our table. Everything was delicious and they went above a beyond serving the entire appetizer menu and more to us. Things happen and we certainly did not expect all that they did for us. Go here! If you haven't already checked out this new gem of a restaurant in LBX, you are really missing out. The restaurant is run by Hell's Kitchen finalist chef Jonathon Benvenuti and his brother Anthony Benvenuti. Family runs deep in this upscale establishment, as the theme of their food is based on their mother's amazing cooking. We had the Harry's Berries tasting menu (strawberry butter focaccia bread, beets and ricotta, hamachi crudo, venison, and strawberry tiramisu) which was nothing short of amazing, and tried a couple of their signature items off the menu (pork belly, burrata and carrots, and the pappardelle). I loved all of the food, but was exceptionally surprised by the carrots and perfectly cooked venison. I don't like cooked carrots, but can't tell you how amazing they were; you'll have to try them yourself. I'm not always a red meat fan, but I would order the venison again and again. Bummed I didn't get a picture of the dish. In short, you have to check out Bar Becky if you are a foodie like myself. read more
