We had heard about this place because we were googling vegan food around Times Square and this had great reviews. I have never had vegan sushi before and honestly it didn't sound like anything special. We decided to try it and when we walked up a couple that was just leaving told us how great it was so now we were excited to try it. It's very small inside and if they don't have a table ready for you they will take you number and call you when it's ready. The food comes out pretty quickly after you order. I was torn whether to give 3 or 4 stars: Pros: the delivery said 35-50 minutes but the food showed up in around 30, which was a nice surprise; I really enjoyed the Sweet Tree sushi roll (sweet potato and avocado) as well as the Fun Guy (hehe) mushroom dumplings; for delivery they serve the sushi sauce in cute little tubes which travel well! We were given this restaurant as a suggestion to have a good vegetarian meal. My wife is gluten free and dairy free and after looking at the menu, she saw that they have plenty of options for her. What I like about Beyond Sushi is that you don't need the heavy dressings like spicy mayo to try to give the food some oomph. The food has enough flavor to be eaten entirely on its own. The enoke, shittake, and braised tofu all combined into an awesome umami bomb. - Spicy mang: can't really go wrong with mango, avocado, and cayenne. I ate this and immediately wanted another. - Chic pea: the only one out of the three rolls that left me a little cold. I liked the combo of eggplant and artichoke (as the tastes balanced each other nicely) but adding pureed chickpea made the roll very, very mushy. The other stuff: - Seasonal noodle soup with kale, beets, broccolini. Extremely healthy and good during this weather but, if it weren't for the chili oil doused on top, I'd be hard-pressed to tell you what exactly I was tasting. The whole bowl was vegetable-flavored water. - Green root noodles: the ponzu sauce was a little too salty for me. I probably ate way too much, but it was worth it. Every single bite of the vegan sushi was delightful. I'm a big fan of purple rice and creative sushi toppings. I had the curry starter soup, the seasonal brocollini sunchoke beet roll and the Happy Tree roll. Both rolls were like nothing I'd ever tasted before. The sunchoke walnut pesto was a clever way to add some vegan protein to the mix without weighing things down. The happy tree was a riff on something I usually order as sushi, the avocado sweet potato roll. The purple rice, cayenne topping and microgreens made it feel like something completely different. He practically fell off his chair when he tasted the crab roll, and ended up ordering 4 plates of sushi. He had the rainbow roll, the "zalmon" sushi, spicy signature roll with black rice, the shiitake mushroom dumplings, and the spicy crab roll. All were delicious but his favorite was probably the rainbow roll and crab roll was a close second. He took a cashew chocolate cheesecake to go and shared. The cashews were blended with rich vegan chocolate and melted in my mouth. The la fiesta was average. We finished the mango ones quicker than this one. Some of the flavors didn't mesh together as well, and just didn't enjoy it as much as the first one. The potatoes were awesome! They came in a big bowl with a nice paste that the potatoes were covered in. Something different, it was really good! Great place overall, but even for NYC price point was a bit pricey. The potatoes, albeit tasty, were overpriced. Would we come back here? Sure. But I don't know if we are going out of our way to get this. Maybe if walking down the street we see it, we go.. but otherwise doubtful. This. Is. Worth. The. Hype. Wow, Beyond Sushi. I knew you'd be great. I had a feeling about you. I saw you from afar and you were captivating. Yet I couldn't approach you for months. Maybe I was scared. Afraid of my overwhelmingly intense love of health food. Would I be able to control myself? Would I ever be the same after walking through your doors? The answer is no. This place is all kinds of wow and it truly was love at first sight. Beyond Sushi is a tiny eatery with not much seating. You can dine in (my friend and I did--still quite pleasant) but most people opt for take out. There are maybe seven two-person tables in the very narrow space, but it doesn't feel claustrophobic. Just don't expect any sort of gourmet dining experience. You order at the counter and patiently or impatiently (I'm the latter...always) wait for your goodies to emerge from whatever magical wonder goes on in that kitchen. Our food came out in 10-15 minutes and it was quite a sight to behold. These rolls are simply a work of art. Regardless of the taste (which is equally as pleasing to the senses), the pure aesthetic of these rolls is standout. Colorful, vibrant and clean, these babies are almost too pretty to eat. But we did. Oh, we did. We ordered: -Mighty Mushroom roll: Six-grain rice - Enoki - Tofu - Shiitake - Micro arugula - topped w/ Shiitake Teriyaki sauce (A++) -Spicy Mang roll: Black rice - Avocado - Mango - English cucumber - Spicy veggies - topped w/ Toasted Cayenne sauce (A++) -La Fiesta roll: Black rice - Avocado - Chayote - Pickled jalapenõ - Cilantro w/ Chili Mango sauce (B+) For reference: three rolls for two moderately hungry people ended up being the perfect amount of food. Hard to choose a favorite between the Spicy Mang and the Mighty Mushroom. Would HIGHLY recommend both. As you'd expect, the former is on a sweeter side and the latter is more savory--they complement each other nicely. I'd pass on the La Fiesta though--in comparison, not great. What I will say about all of these rolls, is that the sauces are themselves pretty outstanding. My friend and I both remarked that the Shiitake Teriyaki sauce tasted truffle-esque. Not something you'd expect when eating sushi. And actually, the main issue with the La Fiesta was perhaps due to the sauce--the roll itself and the sauce on top were dissonant in terms of flavor profiles. Sometimes this can work. In this case, it resulted in more of a "meh" reaction. Last note on why Beyond Sushi deserves five stars and more: I've never loved vegetarian sushi. Sure, I'll get cucumber/avo rolls on occasion but I'm very into my salmon/spicy tuna/eel rolls. I'll always opt for seafood over veggies at normal sushi venues. But like others have said, this sushi transcends all affinities you thought you had. Yes, it's vegan. But as a proud meat eater, I can confidently say that the sushi here is in a league of its own. At points I honestly forgot that I was eating sushi--it was almost unsettling at times. It was yummy but a little bland (possibly because of the sauce on the side). My partner got the ube roll and enjoyed it. The spot is tiny but service was pretty fast.
