The jalapeño itself typically is on the hotter side which compliments the sandwich well. The service is good and the food comes out fairly fast. Yum, easy, fast, convenient, and fairly inexpensive (Hayes Valley standards) lunch option. Right now, it's still takeout only. Before the pandemic, you can sit inside but I almost always do takeout as it gets busy here and the space is not that big. I really like their shrimp fresh rolls because they taste fresh, fills me up and isn't greasy. I like the food here. This is a comment on management. Arrived here at 5:55, closes at 6pm. There were a few people waiting. The gentleman at the counter said, that's it, they're not taking anymore orders. The service is super quick and there are a few tables/a bar for you to eat at. I tried the classic roasted pork banh mi and the roasted pork bowl. The banh mi had a generous filling portion with the meat being super flavorful, and the pickled vegetables pulling it all together. What stood out was the meat seasoning. I ordered Pork Banh Mi which totaled to be $9.78. This was my first time here at DragonEats. Disclaimer that this is take-out only, no seating is available to eat inside. I decided to get Pork, even though I would usually get duck, because this place has more reviews on the pork and chicken banh mi's, and not so much on the duck. I thought the banh mi was really good, the pork was a bit greasy and my bread was a little soggy because all the grease, but the flavors are all there. Compared to Cafe Bunn Mi on Clement St., DragonEats definitely has a smaller sandwich. I was able to eat the enter banh mi byself at dragoneats, but cafe bunn mi is definitely shareable. For less than $10, a great lunch that will definitely keep you filled. I will come back to try to the duck bahn mi, but they also have a lot of other items like spring rolls, rice bowls, and a Vietnamese iced coffee I'm very intrigued by. This is my go-to lunch spot in the area! I probably come here once a week. Here's what I've ordered: - Roasted pork banh mi (5/5) - HIGHLY RECOMMEND! This is my usual order. The bread is the perfect texture, toppings are tasting, the pork is tender and flavorful, and the staff definitely don't skimp on the meat! - 5 spice chicken banh mi (4.5/5): Very tasty, but I still prefer the roasted pork banh mi. - Roasted duck banh mi (4/5) - I usually really like duck and had high hopes for this. While the flavors were there, I just thought the duck here was a bit too greasy for my liking. There's also slightly less meat in this than in other banh mi. - 5 spice chicken fresh bowl (3.5/5) - This bowl wasn't as filling as a banh mi and not as flavorful. While Dragoneats fresh bowls are just fine, the real winner here is the banh mi. Note that this is a casual grab-and-go place with no indoor dining, although there is some outdoor counter space built out by the street to allow you to eat there (standing up). Veggies are fresh, bread has the perfect crunch and absorbs the teriyaki juice without getting soggy. This tofu banh mi is almost twice as expensive as L & G in the Tenderloin ($4.40 vs $8), but IMO it's more than twice as good, worth the extra $. Walked here from market street! Was greeted by the worker at the register. Love the vibes, extremely friendly & hospitable. Ambiance is casual, not too loud. Place is a bit small, though there are some seats both inside and outside. Ordered a roasted pork, 5 spiced chicken banh mi & their soup of the day (chicken broth w kale & other things) along with 2 Viet coffees. All of which were very good. Was surprised that the soup of the day actually tasted good considering it was basically a vegetable soup. I was very impressed! Needed a quick lunch while exploring Hayes Valley and decided to try this spot. Placed an order online and by the time we walked over it was basically ready for pick up. I got the roast duck banh mi and my boyfriend got the chicken banh mi. The roast duck was amazing, super flavorful and they did not skimp on the fillings! The pickled veggies and jalapeños complimented the meat perfectly. The chicken one was also good but I think the duck was a lot better! Delicious Bahn Mi sandwiches for a great price! I usually make my way here every other week for a nice filling and tasty, and relatively cheap lunch. Be aware that the line can get long around noon during the week (shows how popular they are!) but at least the line moves at a good pace. I've tried the five spice chicken, pork, and duck bahn mi sandwiches and all have been great. I'm personally partial to the chicken, but the other two are delicious as well. When I walked up and saw a lot of people braving the wind on a cold day to order food from DragonEats, I figured it was really good. After trying it, I proved myself correct. We walked in and ordered at a table right by the door. The person who helped us was very kind and also answered each of our questions. I ended up ordering the Teriyaki Tofu Roll with jalepeños on the side. Stepping back outside to wait for our order, it took about 8 minutes for our food to be ready. While the restaurant doesn't have a traditional table and chairs set-up, they did have a few chairs lining the storefront and bar counters were you could stand. My roll tasted delicious and came out warm and fresh. The flavor was fantastic and the portion size was nice. I look forward to returning and trying some of their other menu options! read more

Saw this small unassuming place on our walk through Haight and decided to give it a try. Place is very no frilla- walk up and order at the counter, find your own seat. YUM. I've been thinking about this place for over a week now. DragonEats serves delicious, fresh Vietnamese food out of a small store front. We initially thought it was a pop-up due to the subdued signage and small window, but after looking through these reviews it looks like DragonEats has been around for years! After tasting their food I can see why. I ordered the Five Spice Chicken Bowl and it was so fresh and filling. I loved all the bright, flavorful vegetables. The chicken was so soft and cooked to perfection. My partner and I split the shrimp spring rolls and they were great too! That peanut sauce was to die for. My partner was also very pleased with the pork bahn mi. Portion sizes are generous, and we were stuffed after a full entree with a side of spring rolls. We also tried the Vietnamese coffee, and it was nice and strong. They don't have indoor or outdoor seating available during the pandemic. They have a lime green parklet right outside where we stood and ate our food. No seating available, but the standing room worked just fine. We stopped by on a Sunday around lunch and got our food within 20 minutes. It looks like they have quite a robust takeout business as well. Definitely give this spot a try! read more

Ok so I rarely leave bad reviews because I honestly hate to do it, but I just had to. I was at UCSF and after leaving to head home across the bridge, I wanted a quick bite to eat. I was in the mood for Bahn Mi. I googled and saw the amazing reviews here. We found parking out front. There was a line out the door. All good signs, or so I thought. We ordered the pork Bahn Mi and two diet cokes. Very sweet woman taking the order and we tipped her 15%. Looked a bit run down and dirty in the back... Saw an older woman in the kitchen eating with her hands. No big deal, maybe a bit unsanitary but I like home made food. Some of the best is made by Grandmother types! We wait for the order as people lined up. About 10 minutes later our order was ready. I was so hungry I dove right in sitting at the little seating area. Right away I knew something was off. The meat was sort of grey, incredibly oily, and the bread was already soggy with "juice". It looked boiled? Then the smell. Sort of rancid. I took a few more small bites trying to get it down. My partner (who has an iron stomach and insatiable hunger) ate half his sandwich before we both looked at each other and wrapped the rest up to leave. I didn't want to wait in line to say anything. On the way home I ended up throwing up a bit. No joke. My partner said his stomach was in knots. We got home and tossed the rest (basically 1 and a half sandwiches) in the trash. We usually get the Bahn Mi at Monster Pho in Oakland. It's always grilled to perfection and so fresh. Each banh mi comes with a meat layered w mayo, pickled carrots and radish w optional jalapeños (def recommend). I got the pork and my partner got the chicken. The duck was sold out. One of the best baguettes I've had on a banh mi I've had in a while. The bread was nicely toasted, fluffy on the inside, and crunchy on the outside. The pork was nicely marinated and the veggies were lightly marinated. I like a little more vinegar usually but I enjoyed the freshness from these. Each sandwich was around 10.50 which isn't bad for a lunch meal in the city! The size of the sandwich is on the smaller side than what I am use to but reasonable for the price point.
