This place is quite pricey for some buns, compared to other places. Everything looks so appealing walking past this place, especially when it's dark out because everything is so bright in there. Tried this place out just for the heck of it and it wasn't bad. The cheese ham roll (I think that's what it's called) is definitely worth a try! I'd prefer the slightly browner ones since I like a little toasty taste. Too bad it's a whole dollar for 1 or I would be coming here for this bun alone. I think these buns are only worth buying if you're going to eat them right away or else they just won't be as good. Fancy Wheat Field Bakery is a great addition to this district because honestly, not many establishments here are the best :/ I got sucked into this place out of curiosity when I wanted something cheap to eat, and of course, asian buns are cheap! They have a number of different buns here and many range around $.75 to about $2, more so averaging $1.20. I love the pork sung baos, ALL OF THEM! They have a pork sung and ham bao, pork sung and seaweed bao, and i think 2 other types. I love the cheese and garlic bread! The garlic flavor just makes my mouth water:) They also have mango cakes here, light cheese cakes, and other types of breads! I really enjoy this Bakery. The location is on a busy street on San Bruno Ave, and parking is sometimes hard to find, but not impossible. Similar to a ShengKee, but their cakes are bomb! I've tried most of the larger cakes for parties, like their greentea mousse cake (which is my favorite), and their regular chinese sponge cake is really good as well because it's not too sweet and has fresh fruit inside. I like chinese cakes because their cream/icing is not buttercream icing and sometimes, after a large meal you just want a light airy cake. I would say, if you have a party, just call in and reserve a cake. For my grandma's birthday, I tried walking in and picking up a cake, and at least 7 of them were already reserved so I had to settle for something that I didn't originally want to buy. When you buy a cake, they put it in a gorgeous colorful box, that comes with plates, plastic knives, mini forks, as well as 2 candles. Perfect for a party! Had to plan specifically to come here to redeem gift card. Not worth the gas. Only two locations: San Bruno Ave or Chinatown. This was lesser of two traffic evils. They do not actually bake here. Products are brought in by truck from central kitchen located elsewhere. That means all warm, moist breads and cakes are basically all trapped in dark, warm, moist climate which is perfect for growing mold. And that is what we got. Purchased assorted breads and cakes on Saturday afternoon. When took out to eat pudding cake on Sunday morning, found dots of mold. Threw away. Then took out milk bread..also covered with dots of mold. EWWW...will NEVER go back. read more

Found out about this lovely bakery about 1 year ago when my co worker brought some of there bread back to work for us. Most of the items are good but my favoutrite is the pork sung bun , its very soft and the amount of cream they use to stick the pork sung to is perfect. There hk style garlic cheese bread is pretty nice too. Last time i went there myself and i am impressed with there milk tea. Cant wait till i am back next time. When I was in China, we saw tons of little bakeries like this, full of many kinds of pastries - from sweet to savory, from snacks to meals - at very low prices. I never thought we'd find something like them in the US, let alone one with such amazing prices! It matches or beats some of the in-China Chinese bakeries which is kind of crazy. It is also almost identical to them, too, down to the type of plastic containers and the way tongs are hung up in the corner. Many pastries are between $1-1.50, and I'd love to go back sometime and buy a lot more. We got their pizza role, which was amazing, and some almond thing . We also got their cheesecake, which was pretty typical for Chinese cheesecake - it is usually entirely baked, and it has a very mild flavor, with a hint of eggs. While I prefer American cheesecake, it's cool that this authentic option exists. Can't wait to go back and try more things :) read more

This place is great, they actually speak English here so no qualms about a missing order or getting the wrong cake. I like that it's a small neighborhood place, so none of that snooty bum-rush feel to it. They're smart, their buns are all on display to the street. Great marketing to get you inside their doors. Their baked cheesecake was light and airy, really reminded me of Jap cheesecake. It had the perfect balance of flavor without being too sweet and having baked it, gave it the slightest crisp of an edge. (Drooling yet?!) I wished they had a few more selection of cake flavors but all good, because the strawberry mango mousse cake I got, was a hit at the party. It wasn't too sweet and very light. Not to mention it was really pretty with the fresh fruits and decoration. It truly distinguishes itself from all the other asian bakeries because of their own variations of buns. Otherwise, it would just be "another asian bakery." Not to mention, their cake box is really nice and sturdy. It is an actual box with a lid (picture a hat box...but for cake!) which came with shoe-lace like ties, making it easy to transport and repack the leftovers. I came here a LONG time ago and just decided to post this review now. But this place has the best bao in the freaking world. This place is esteemed as a Chinese bao bakery and definitely doesn't disappoint. It has more of a modern, Hong Kong-style feel; you grab a tray and grab the types of bread you want. The bread is already pre-packaged, and I came on the occasion where they were warm and fresh out of the oven! I got a Pork Sung bao. it was soft, covered with pork sung all around the roll. Most of all, I got it when it was WARM. Nothing beats that. I also ended up getting a variety of standard baos: Char Siu bao, Hot Dog bao, etc. I had these when they were cold, but it was still good. The bread was nice and soft, easy to eat. The meat inside the Char Siu bao was VERY good. It was plentiful and didn't taste artificial. The hot dog was just a hot dog. Uh, what can I really say about it? The prices for these baos are pretty good. They tend to be a little more expensive than average - and I consider the average to be like, 60-70 cents - but for the quality and freshness, it's great. Also, someone told me that they noticed a lot of people working in the back (who actually make the bread). That's interesting, since there was only one person at the cash register. With that many people in the back, they could at least put another person out front. We had to wait in line to pay because people wanted the best baos ever. But I can't blame them - this place is great! I will be back to fulfill my bao cravings. Yum. read more

It's always nice to see new business starting in the Portola and San Bruno Ave area. This new bakery is a self serve type bakery. You get a tray and pick out their pastries, buns, and cakes. The only bad thing is that it is a very small store and can get really packed sometimes, like in the mornings. And they some times run out of trays, and if they do, you will look stupid and just stand there and wait. Or just use your hand to hold it. Also the little cabinets that hold the bake goods are not the most efficient. You have to lift the door all the way up to a certain spot to hold it up and all the while you have to hold the tray and tong! Overall, the bake goods are tasty, moist, and fresh. I haven't tried the cakes yet, but from the looks of it and other's review, it seem to be pretty good. I am glad there's a self serve bakery in this neighborhood. Discovered this place while walking down San Bruno after having dim sum down the street. My is parking a pain there...but the weather's so nice! There's definitely a Sheng Kee-esque feel to this place; everything is laid out neatly behind little plastic doors, there are trays that you transfer the baked goods onto with tongs and there's a pretty wide variety cakes, buns, breads and "other". I will say that it seems to me like the prices are cheaper than Sheng Kee and the quality is pretty much the same. Actually, Sheng Kee seems to have shrunk everything lately; the lats time I walked in everything seemed slightly deflated :( I'm giving this place five stars and it's based on the only thing I've ever had here, which I get every time: the 50 cent dinner rolls. They're always nice and warm when I get them (around noon on Saturday, although they bring fresh ones out fairly frequently) and it's pretty hard to resist eating them right away. They smell great, they're very soft and not overpoweringly sweet, thankfully. I usually get about eight in one visit and pretty much finish half of them before I get home. (By the way, apparently they're opening a location in Chinatown pretty soon, which I think will be on Stockton.) I haven't tried many of the other things, although my mother usually gets the pork sung roll, which I find too "exotic" to try. She says it's pretty good though and I suppose mother knows best. I will say that the other things in the display (sausage buns, egg tarts, that huge thing with the cheese and tomatoes) look great and smell even better. Especially the chocolate mousse and their light cheesecake. Their creamy milk cake and pork buns are very good. However, a couple of the items they sell taste a little bland. This is a self service bakery. You pick any item and put it on the tray and bring it to the counter. This bakery reminds me of Honolulu. The difference is that everyone working here is Chinese and not Japanese. This is so similar to St. Germain however they have cha shui bow which is baked. They also have very french pastries too. The price is a bit pricey - and the service no matter how high end it is - when you have employees that speak Chinese - well what else can we say about 'service'. It's a small little shop with only 2 small tables. The store is in the middle of the block, and can be hard to see. Even more difficult is parking on the weekends. I tried some of the things I read about on other Yelp reviews. The dan-ta (egg tarts) were decent. Flakey crusts, and not too sweet custard was great. But it was pretty oily and I could feel the fat sinking in to me... Green tea mousse was just ok. Nothing special. a bit on the plastic tasting side. Mango cake was very pretty but too sugary. It's not a blatant sweetness, but I noticed that none of us could finish or single slice. Bad sign. It was good at first but was left with the taste of sugar in my mouth. It was an odd hidden sugar type of cake. But the bakery is in a location with no other good Chinese bakeries, so it's a good options when I'm in the area. Also, they do live up to their Fancy name with their very pretty cake boxes. Very sturdy, beautifully printed, with a cute ribbon. It looked like a cute hat box. Did i mention this place is a china styled self serve bakery? No need to be awkward in ordering a chicken tail bao ever again. the buns range from 60 cents to $1.10 the packages buns and mini cupcakes range from $1.50 to $3 the dessert cups are around $2.50 each the prices may be high for a chinese bakery but the desserts are definitely plentiful in variety and accessorized with chocolate flowers and fruits galore. Started going to this place this past summer and have returned at least twice every week for my morning bun to go with my morning paper. I've had their ham&egg, cheese&garlic, coconut, custard, black sesame, macau egg tart, fruit tart, corn&cheese, and green onion&cheese bun. All but the black sesame are yums, and I would definitely recommend the ham&egg and cheese&garlic buns. The black sesame is a little bland, they could have added more black sesame paste. The ladies behind the counter are so nice-there have been times when I didn't bring in enough money, and I would need to run out to the car to get more, and they didn't make me wait in line again when I returned. I really don't see why this place deserves any more than a 3 stars rating at the most. I do understand in comparison to it's neighborhood competitor bakeries, it is much nicer in decor and cleanliness, but it's pastries are really just OK. I've had better Chinese bakeries elsewhere, like Kee Wah. The buns were pretty decent so I did buy a hot dog bun and a cocktail bun to try, but be warn...NOT everything is. I learned it the hard way. I was really hungry when I was there, so when my mom offered me to buy me one of their Tiramisu desserts...I fell for it. OMG...it's like the WORSEST Tiramisu I've EVER eaten! Typically, Tiramisu is really light but this was super rich with buttercream! WTF?! I barely tasted any coffee flavor in it, and of course there's no surprise there wasn't any rum in it, plus there really wasn't any sign of sponge cake or ladyfingers in any of the three layers! Uh...do I even needa say more??? It was totally disastrous! THE TIRAMISU SUCKED BIG TIME!!! I really should've known better! Yuck! Anyhow, there are two things that I did like about this place despite of my bad Tiramisu experience. One is that most of it's its pastries are presented in display cases that ppl can just grab with a pair of thongs and put it onto a tray. It's totally self-serve so ppl can get whatever they desire without pressure...and it does make it more fun and totally HK-style. The other thing was that they are not cheapsakes like other Chinese bakeries, they actually provide BOXES for the pastries, not white or clear plastic grocery bags! I hate it when they put tart-like items in it and it always ends up getting smushed. So, kudos for them for not being cheap! :) It really comes down to whether if I'll come back here again. We tried a smattering of buns this morning. They all weren't really any more special or different than the ones from other Chinese bakeries. They had a better presentation, but taste wise, not much more impressive. I would say they had some buns that you typically don't see at other places, like the Frankfurter, tomato hot dog, and the pork sung roll. I didn't like the fact that the red bean bun had whole beans and they mixed up the signs for the products. As a result, our custard bun was the cocktail bun. At the price point, head down the street to Red House Bakery for the same items which will be cheaper, bigger and tastier. Have been a regular birthday cake buying location for me the cake used to be more fresh but it looks like the cake part was from storage and they just do the decoration in the back. The last cake I have I have to wait and pre-order. If I prefer order, shouldn't it be freshly made? And it was not that good, tasted several days old. It was like a zoo with so many customers ordering birthday cakes. I am sure that is why the quality went downhill. I was disappointed and they have raised their price also. From now on I would just get the small buns instead of birthday cakes it's not worth it.
