food was super tasty! we got the beef noodle soup and the pork over rice. the popcorn chicken was good too! seasoning for both was perfect and exactly how it should be. our kids enjoyed it too. nina was super helpful!! also liked the ambience of the place. some chill mando pop songs in the background.

A classic Taiwanese restaurant in a busy plaza, we decided to try this place out. We ordered the Taiwanese beef noodle soup and chili wontons- they were nothing special. Granted, the beef was tender, but the flavor profile was quite flat... I've had better. The chili wontons also tasted more vinegary than the chili oil flavor, not a big fan. Overall the dishes were okay. Service is friendly and the interior is clean and well-decorated with options for bar seating or some tables. Parking is a real hassle especially on the weekends but pro tip: park in the side streets for free. To note, the reason why this place has so many positive reviews is because they offer you a free non-alcoholic drink in exchange for writing a review. I should've read the reviews before coming here lol

Came here with my wife and daughter for dinner. We had a craving for beef noodle soup and the beef roll. Wound up getting those plus cucumbers, mazesoba, and a couple of "cocktails". The beef roll is the best we've had in San Diego, the beef noodle soup is too. The noodles have great texture, the beef is flavorful and the broth is great. The cocktails are soju based so are lighter and a little sweeter. The staff is always so sweet to my toddler and the service is solid. It's a casual place that mostly has bar seating so don't expect fine dining service. It's very attentive, direct, and you have all you need without the pomp and circumstance.

It's located in a plaza with tons of other dining and so the parking gets busy. I had to park a bit down the way and walk over to the plaza. The restaurant is pretty small. They have very few tables and bar seating. My group had to wait to get seated, but their food was worth it. Their popcorn chicken was nice and crispy. I wish there was more flavor though. The beef noodle soup was probably the best I've tried around the area. The noodles are perfectly chewy and soaks up the very flavorful broth. The broth was so delicious. The service was quick once we got seated.

Everyone knows parking in convoy is terrible especially on a Friday night. The parking lot in this shopping center in also terrible. But that's all I'll say for parking 1/5 When we arrived there was just a short wait, roughly about 10minutes but it was fine because it gave us time to go through the menu. We got bar seating which was a nice vibe and plenty of table space to eat. Great lighting and also great customer service. The staff was friendly and very helpful, always making sure we were ok. I got the Taiwanese beef noodle soup which was so good. There are two options for noodles, Wavy noodles or classic straight noodles. I picked Wavy noodles and it worked out well and was delicious. The portion size is huge, I couldn't finish it so I packed it to go. The beef was torched to give it a Smokey taste. We also got the Popcorn chicken and that was also a huge portion! It was soooo good! 5/5 Also got two drinks lychee and pomelo 5/5 Overall experience 5/5 I'm going to come back forsure!

Genuinely amazed at how good everything here was! The menu is small and they've seemed to perfect every item on it. My personal favorite was the Taiwanese beef rolls. The scallion pancake was perfectly sweet and savory with such flavorful and juicy beef inside. The cucumber added the perfect crunch. The pork over noodles was fantastic and packed with flavor. I loved the texture of the noodles. Last but not least, the chili wontons were fabulous with such an amazing sauce that we could not get enough of. I can't wait to return to try more off the menu.

Came to formoosa with a couple of friends. I know a terrible parking experience is expected in Convoy, but formoosa is on a whole other level. The parking lot layout is odd, small, and tight, with heavy foot traffic, so expect to struggle during peak hours. formoosa itself is a pretty solid spot. The inside looks very clean and modern, and the decor makes the place feel very bright and inviting. It was not crowded at all when we arrived around 5 PM on a Tuesday. There are QR codes on the table that you can scan to view the menu on your phone. FOOD: My friends and I had mixed reviews about the food. One friend got the pork over rice and said the pork oddly tasted more like beans than meat. My other friend got the sesame noodles and enjoyed them. Taiwanese Mazesoba (3.75/5) - Tasted good and had a nice snappy texture. The flavor itself felt pretty one-dimensional and was on the salty side, even after a good mix. It felt like it was missing an element of something I couldn't quite pinpoint. I'm not mad about it, though. Scallion Pancakes (4/5) - Crispy and flaky. Came with a dipping sauce made of what I think was vinegar, chili oil, and a kind of soy sauce. SERVICE: The service was great and attentive. Waters were kept filled, and they checked up on us often. Food came out pretty fast after ordering, too. TLDR// Solid spot in Convoy, but I'm not sure if the food here totally justifies the parking lot turmoil. Wouldn't be mad at returning.

We ordered the Taiwanese Beef Roll, Chili Wontons, and Sesame Noodles. The beef roll was the standout by far - 1000% would order again. Super flavorful, great texture, and honestly the highlight of the meal. The chili wontons weren't spicy whatsoever and were just okay for me, and the sesame noodles were decent but didn't stand out compared to the beef roll. Service was friendly and efficient, and James and Aiden were holding down the fort and doing a good job keeping everything running smoothly. The vibe is casual but still lively enough for a fun lunch spot. They have bar seating and also serve alcoholic drinks. I'd come back again specifically for the beef rolls and to try a few other items on the menu, like the popcorn chicken and spicy beef noodle soup.

wanted to try formoosa because it had over 5k yelp reviews so stopped in for dinner on a friday night. first off, the parking lot can be a nightmare when it's packed. second off, the restaurant is on the smaller side and can get packed. they have a paper waitlist handy. we ordered the lychee colada and guava margarita to drink; and the Beef Roll and new TAIWAN MAZESOBA dish to eat. the drinks were refreshing with an asian twist. the beef roll was good, very chunky. the mazesoba noodles were okay. it was giving spaghetti. after seeing many tables receiving their beef noodle soups, i really wished i had ordered that instead. i did notice the mazesoba was served in a pho nom bowl so perhaps the 2 establishments are related. despite the crowd, everything came out relatively quickly. the staff and service were great. read more

Food was really good here, I do think it's odd that they offer a free drink if you show them your review. Almost as if they want a review before you eat there. Service was great but we got there very early so the wait was not long. When we left the line was 20 deep. Beef noodle recipe is on point. This is a cute place. It has a U shape booth with seats and tables on the side. The workers are so cute and super friendly. That's why this place gets 4 stars. I met my husband for lunch at a dessert place and we decided to try this place also. We got the popcorn chicken. It took them a long time to make it and my husband was pressed on time. The Police don't really get an official lunch. They always have to be ready to go to a call. He tried to squeeze in lunch with me, thats pretty sweet! The chicken was sort of bland but the sauce was so good! I would really like to try their other stuff. They all look so good! read more

This review is for takeout. We ordered two beef noodle soups with wavy noodles and the spicy wontons. Everything was packaged very well and was piping hot by the it made home. Noodles were great, beef was tender and the soft boiled egg was cooked to perfection. The beef noodle soup was good, not overly salty like ones I've had before. The spicy wontons were a bit sweet for my liking and I was hoping the wontons had chunks of shrimp rather than minced shrimp. Overall takeout meal was good but wouldn't get the wontons again. read more

Finally tried this Taiwanese noodle spot that I heard so much about! Solid 4.5 for me! The beef noodle soup had a super clean, milder broth with a really nice balance of subtle sweetness and gentle spice--flavorful without ever feeling heavy or overpowering! The beef was especially tender and soft. The wontons were the standout. The tangy, slightly spicy sauce paired so well with the filling, and each bite had a satisfying burst of flavor :) We also got the cucumber on the side, which was crisp and refreshing--perfect for balancing everything between bites. Overall, a really satisfying, well-balanced meal in a clean bar. Definitely a spot I'd come back to when I want something comforting but still light. This place tasted like really comforting home cooking. Unpretentious, classic Taiwanese dishes with a slight modern edge, Formoosa quickly won over my heart and taste buds. The lou rou fan had that distinct five spice aroma with a nice balance of fatty and lean pieces that slowly melted into the rice but also provided a nice chew. The Taiwanese mazemen was springy, saucy, garlicky and addictive. The restaurant is mostly bar-style and our two servers were helpful and kind. I'm glad I don't live closer because otherwise, I'd be here all the time. read more

Hi everyone, If you guys want Taiwanese food but can't pick a place out of the hundred places located in San Diego, this would be one of the options to go. Reason being is because their menu has only a select few options compared to other taiwanese menus, which are often a lot in my experience. Furthermore, their QR code menu has pictures that you can view to help you decide. P.s. I am not from the area and I came down to San Diego solely for the zoo. Everything we ate was literally so delicious! We did have to wait awhile to be seated as the restaurant was small. There were only a few tables and the rest of the seating was at the counter, like a handroll bar type of style. Popcorn chicken: The chicken was tender and juicy with a wonderful crispy outer layer. I really liked the abundant amount of fried basil included. Can't go wrong with this starter! Beef rolls: The rolls were filled to the brim with plenty of flavorful beef. The beef was nicely shredded into smaller bit sized pieces, making the roll easier to chew. Chili wontons: These were typical pork wontons with a spicy oily sauce. Nothing crazy, but still tasty. Beef noodle soup: The broth was a tad bit salty, but the flavor was definitely there. I loved how chewy and bouncy the noodles were. It came with plenty of beef slices and bokchoy. It was a generous portion! Sesame noodles: This was a dry noodle dish mixed in a creamy sesame sauce. There was a small kick with the chili oil. I really enjoyed these noodles as they were refreshing with all the heat we got from our other dishes. The service was great! Just moved back to San Diego and had to hit up one of my favorites! Taiwanese beef roll and chili wontons were still amazing! They had a new item called Taiwan Mazesoba - delicious as well! We added the leftover chili oil to the noodles. Yum!!!! Service was friendly and attentive with Chris behind the bar and serving the whole restaurant. It had all the taiwanese classic dishes - beef noodle, scallion pancake, sesame noodles. They were playing taiwanese song MVs on the TV, really took me back to my time in Taiwan :' ) However, the food was only OK, borderline bad :( I ordered the beef roll and the scallion pancake was super soggy and it was tiny for 15$. The beef also didn't taste very fresh. Sesame noodles was hot? Might be a personal preference, but sesame noodles should be cold and should be thin noodle. Lastly the pork over noodle dish was probably above average but not that great either. :( read more

Really chill vibe upon walking in early for Friday lunch. You have the option to sit at the bar or at one of the perimeter tables. The place was not busy yet so we sat at the bar. They don't have paper menus, rather you have to use their QR code with your phone camera. After getting our waters, we ordered a pot of their peach oolong tea. If you check in on Yelp, they have a 50% off drink special, too. We ordered the beef noodle and beef roll to share between two people. Make sure to ask for the wavy noodles! They not only have a great texture but held the broth so well with each bite. The beef roll is shareable for two. Super crispy and full of goodies. The oolong tea really helped cut the heaviness of the noodle and roll. If I wasn't driving I'd def try out the nice drinks another time with friends. Overall, great service. Tried Formoosa today and overall it was a solid spot. The beef noodle soup was good . I really liked the texture of the noodles, but the soup was a little more sour than I expected. I'd give it a 7.5/10. The sesame noodles were delicious and definitely my favorite. Loved the wavy noodles and the flavor was great. 8/10. The pork over rice was also solid, and the kids enjoyed it too. Service was friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. read more

Formoosa is one of the few greats of Taiwanese food in San Diego. Youve got to try the beef noodle soup. My partner is from Taipei and thinks it's pretty darn close to what he gets at home. My personal favorite is the beef roll. Imagine a scallion pancake stuffed with juicy beef and crunchy cucumber. Almost as big as a cali burrito! Nina and Quan were amazing hosts. The place is small and cozy. The staffs are very nice and friendly. Food are delicious. We got cucumber salad, beef noodle and sesame noodle add beef brisket. Everything is delicious. Cucumber salad is so refreshing. Both beef noodle and sesame noodle are the bomb. Beef are so tender. I like the sesame noodle a little more. Will definitely come back. Stopped by here for lunch on the weekend. The place was pretty packed but we didn't have to wait long. Aiden and James were the ones on staff and they were decently attentive for how busy it was. Vibe was kind of cute with the bar seating. It's giving sushi bar seating. Ordered the pork over rice, Taiwanese beef roll, and popcorn chicken. Everything was good and tasty but a little bit expensive. Popcorn chicken was a decent size and tasted well but 14.5 was a bit high. Stopped by formoosa after our annual trip down here to pack up our kid's things during finals week. The staff was welcoming and attentive as soon as we stepped in the door. The menu is a QR code at each table, which made it easy enough for everyone to look. Both Aiden and James came by at different times to check on us. We were waiting for one more person to arrive and they were so gracious about it. As soon as we were ready to order, Aiden came by pretty quickly. We ordered mazesoba, chili wontons, popcorn chicken and cucumbers to share. The ambiance is nice getaway from the craziness of Convoy Street outside. First, some positives: the staff were very courteous, attentive, and eager to help. The restaurant was completely full when we arrived, and there was a party of 12 ahead of us, but the staff communicated the seating situation clearly. Despite the restaurant being packed, my wife and I were seated right away, which I appreciated. We ordered: * Two bowls of cumin lamb hand-pulled noodles * Stir-fried string beans * Shrimp fried rice The hand-pulled noodles had a good chew and satisfying texture, which is important. The cumin and spice were also prominent. However, my bowl had noticeably more grease sitting at the bottom than my wife's, and the flavor didn't really build as I ate. At first, wasn't sure if the flavor would pair well as a mimosa, but it was good! The matcha and yuzu blend well. Someone else had a yuzu mimosa, but it too sour for my taste. The yuzu with the matcha definitely helps reduce the citrus sour taste. Service was friendly and fast. Since it was a busy Sunday, they already explained in advance that food might take longer to come out, but it didn't feel very long. When I went, we had a live musician playing. Personally for me, it was a bit loud, so it was hard to hear everyone at my table. But, Im sure other people appreciated and enjoyed the live music. We were drawn to this restaurant by its rave reviews on Yelp, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a very disappointing dining experience. The restaurant was extremely cramped, with only three small tables and most seating available at the bar. Traveling with a toddler, the three of us were squeezed around a tiny table. While the poor dining environment could have been overlooked if the food was exceptional, sadly, it was far from it. We ordered the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, Braised Pork Rice, and Pan-Fried Dumplings, but none of the dishes were enjoyable. The noodles in the beef noodle soup were overly soft and lacked any chewiness, making for an unpleasant texture. The accompanying beef consisted of about four pieces that were tough and impossible to bite through--either the cooking time was insufficient, or poor-quality beef was used. If it had been proper beef shank, it wouldn't have been so unpalatable. The soup broth was the most disappointing part: it lacked the depth and richness of a proper stock and tasted like an instant noodle seasoning packet--overly salty, overly sweet, and far from authentic. To make matters worse, this mediocre dish was priced at $18.50, which is absurdly overpriced. The Braised Pork Rice should have been renamed "Salty Pork Rice," as it was overwhelmingly salty, with large chunks of pork that bore no resemblance to authentic braised pork. The rice itself tasted like it had been reheated multiple times--it was hard, dry, and lacked the fragrance of freshly cooked rice. As for the Pan-Fried Dumplings, the skins were limp and felt as if they had been made with glutinous rice flour, giving them a strange texture. The filling of cabbage and pork was bland and flavorless. Even the chili oil served on the side was inexplicably sweet, clearly adjusted to suit American fast-food preferences rather than preserving authentic Taiwanese flavors. Throughout the meal, there was no service to speak of. Apart from taking our order and delivering the food, no one came by to refill our water or check on us. Squeezed at a tiny table and faced with such subpar food, we couldn't bring ourselves to finish the meal and left early. As tourists, we have no need to sugarcoat our review in exchange for discounts or free desserts. If you're looking for authentic Taiwanese food, this is definitely not the place to go. So I haven't been around convoy for a while actually didn't know what to get for dinner I wasn't in the mood for crab hut or raki raki, so I went into this restaurant located in between them, Formoosa. At first I didn't know what to expect, but the restaurant decor is simple yet beautiful it seems to have a bar top style dining like an omakase. I sat down and was greeted immediately by Paige and Kai, Kai told me I was able to sit anywhere at the bar. After I sat down there were these QR codes to see the menu. To my surprise the menu was small with a small variety of specialty Asian foods not an omakase like I was expecting. I was happy to see a small menu because small menus mean they have freshly made foods and they specialize is a specific dish. I asked for what is recommended the staff told me the popular dishes are The Beef Roll, and the Beef noodle soup, and the chili wontons. So I ordered the chili wontons and Beef Noodle Soup. Amazing quick service by Paige and Kai in the front, and the kitchen staff worked efficiently to deliver the food to me and the other customers. After I received my food I was blown away by the presentation when I tasted the broth my palate was hit with a savory rich beef flavor that seeped through the noodles definitely a flavor bomb, the wontons were amazing tang from the vinegar and a beautiful spice fragrance from the chili oil. The beef noodles had several cuts of what seem to be super tender boneless beef short rib slightly torched for a subtle smokiness to bring everything together, the noodle soup was topped with a perfectly cooked Ajitama egg which added creaminess and some well cooked crisp bock choy to balance out the savoriness of the broth cleansing your palate. After those two dishes I had seen a ton of beef rolls being ordered so I had to try one myself. After both Paige and Kai checked in with me again I ordered some sesame balls for desert. 10/10 will come back. Chill music, amazing service, delicious food I have never had elsewhere, and beautiful cocktails I really want to enjoy with friends and coworkers after a long day of work. The dish comes with pork wontons, chili oil, vinegar, and green onions, and it had just the right amount of spice. For my main, I ordered the Taiwanese Beef Noodle. I highly recommend switching the noodles to the wavy (big handmade) noodles for a better texture. The soup was decent, though a bit heavy on the MSG, and the beef was fresh and tender. My only downside was the wait--almost 30 minutes for the noodle bowl seems a bit long. Also, I noticed two employees cleaned up and handled trash before bringing our food without washing their hands, which raised some concerns about hygiene. Super cute interior and layout. Really liked their grassy wall with the cow. If anything, make the tables outside of the bar more accessible; the bar is pretty high and I feel like customers sitting there could be forgotten pretty easily. Noodles were super high quality, especially the Taiwanese beef noodle soup. They brought it out from the kitchen and flamed the beef separately. I got the dried noddles. The bowl made it hard to get to the sauce at the bottom but nonetheless still tasted awesome when it was evenly mixed. Popcorn chicken was great, except it didn't really come as an appetizer but rather altogether.
