In these days of Covid, the absence of office workers is deafening, as I walked to this bakery, located in Tribeca, mere steps away from the Foley Square courthouses and City Government buildings. What is truly gratifying is that Frenchette Bakery continues to exist. Located in the lobby of an office building next to Worth Street, Frenchette marches on in the tradition of Arch Bakery that preceded it. The baked goods are not only of a very high quality, but the offerings are very innovative. If you are looking for something different, this is the right place. I had the savory egg and market green, (only a vague idea of what I was getting). It was a tiny egg with a deep rich orange yolk. It was salty, but not crumbly as a a hard boiled chicken egg would be. It had almost a creamy velvety texture. I could hardly spot much egg white. It sat on a bed of what I would guess is kale leaves in a flake pastry. Nice. What took me off guard was the Canelle. It looked like chocolate, but did not taste like it. It was hard and brittle, cracking when I bit into it. It had a custardy, like a bread pudding, filling inside. Interesting. What is good to know, they now have weekend hours too. read more

It's all about the ambiance. Probably the coolest alleyway of a coffeeshop I've stumbled upon in the city. They have super appealing, but pricey, pastries. There seems to be specials each day. The Frenchette team just opened their new bakery near the original restaurant in the beloved Arcade Bakery space, which is sort of hidden in an office building. When you enter the building you still can't see the bakery at all, but even an hour before closing today, the amazing smell of fresh bread was so powerful that you could follow your nose to the counter toward the back right side of the room. I just ordered everything they still had for the day, which was a bit limited but still a good selection of excellent carbs, including some amazing croissants. I'll probably go back early tomorrow to try the Twice Baked and Pain Au Chocolat which I'm sure will sell out quickly. read more

Been waiting to try Frenchette since it's opening. I'm happy that a stellar bakery was able to replace Arcade Bakery. I can still get my tasty croissants and coffee to start my day. One of the notable differences is different offering of baked goods which I must come back to try more of, and an espresso machine. This place can be hard to miss and possibly intimidating if you don't know what you're looking for. You're transported to what seems like a corridor where the service and seating is along the walls. The canelé texture was truly top notch, with a gorgeously crisp crust and an impossibly tender interior. I shared the kouign amann with a colleague who made nearly NSFW noises as he ate it at a nearby desk. But it was the citrus croustillant that impressed me most in the menagerie of hits I sampled from Frenchette Bakery. I'm at a loss for words to describe this beautiful creation so I'll defer to the bakers themselves to explain what exactly a croustillant is: "A spiral of lovely layers filled with seasonal preserves, gently tossed in sugar to add a little sweetness to your day." I wanted to check this place out because of its unique location. It's on Church St and inside an office building, and is more of a pastry stand with cute and generous seating along the hallway. The building is very old NY and even though it was nice and empty when I visited, I'd say this feels more like a grab and go spot to me. I tried their chocolate croissant which had lovely flaky layers and a more bitter chocolate which I enjoyed. The dough was on the more dense side though, and also slightly sour so maybe it was a sourdough. The feuillete I got had a delicious poached pear on custard and was glazed with honey. Definitely a bit more decadent but super yummy and unique. The pastry was again dense but also flaked with something I couldn't identify. What I thought was unique about this spot is how much variety they have on their menu, across sweet and savory goods. It also looked like they make pizza. Yes, it is hidden in the hallway of a random office building in Tribeca and yes, come because it has some of the best pastries I've ever had. I love my croissants twice-baked for the extra flakiness and theirs was unsurprisingly very on point. It's flaky, but not too crunchy that leaves crumbs all over you. And it's just buttery enough to let the pistachio shine through. You get two kinds of pistachio experience in one croissant - the crunchy bits on top and the creamy filling (the star of the show IMO). The contrast was super fun and delicious. I can always appreciate a great bakery that's a hidden gem, that doesnt require me to wait out in line in the blistering sun just for some flakiness (no not the kind that cancels on you 45 mins before meeting when you're already halfway done with hair and make up). Ive been to the Arcade Bakery that used to be in the same retail space (they were also v good). I think this place is run by the same people at Frenchette (cute brasserie just down the street). I got here later in the afternoon, around 2pm. Half of their pastry selection had already been sold out. They still had remaining loaves and croissants left. What I really wanted to try was their cheese choux type pastries called gougeres. I opted for the pain au chocolat since you can't go wrong with a staple. It was just as expected - airy, crispy, flakey, with not toooooo much chocolate creme. Also I might be wrong but there was a hint of sourness to it, maybe its sourdough? It was $6 which is more steep than average but totally worth IMO. I definitely want to try their breads as well as the kouign and twice baked pistachio next time. read more

Arcade Bakery was my favorite bakery and I was devastated when they closed. As sad as I am about Arcade Bakery, this place is great! My favorite item from Arcade Bakery was their ham and cheese baguette, so I got Frenchette Bakery's jambon beurre to compare. It's different, mainly the bread is a harder type of bread and there's no cheese, but the sandwich was just as delicious. They use a ton of butter in this sandwich. I could do with a little less and more evenly spread butter so I don't get mouthfuls. Still, would get this sandwich again next time I visit. For lunch I also recommend getting their La Margherite Pizz'ette. If you don't like crust, this might not be the pizza for you. I thought the crust was delicious because it was so fluffy on the inside. You can get the pizzas from 12-3pm. Some other items I recommend are the comté gougère, focaccia, and croustillant. The gougère sells for 3 at $5. It tasted like a delicious ball of salty cheese. The focaccia changes and I had a spring vegetable focaccia with ramps, which was delicious with the sprinkle of salt. The croustillant is a baked brioche filled with a fruit curd. It tastes similar to a yeast donut except it's baked instead. They said they change the filling every 2 days or so. That day they had lemon curd. I'm really glad I got the last one. I still wish Arcade Bakery was here, but will definitely visit this new bakery as often as I can. read more

High quality and tasty bakery with yummy variety of viennoiseries. We arrived at around 12:45 on a Sunday so no more pistachio croissant. I had the plain croissant, egg savory with greens, pear feuilleté (flavored with ginger, tumeric and honey) for breakfast (kinda felt guilty to have so much but it's much higher quality and less sweet than most bakery). The croissant is one of the best I've had in NYC; it has rich butter and flakey pastry tastes without tasting like sugar which happens to many bakeries that just make sweet croissant. My husband had the ham baguette sandwich and he liked the texture of the baguette. We bought the winter harvest loaf to have with our soup for dinner and it's great! The bakery is take-away only on the ground floor of a commercial building, but there are plenty of benches and pull-out tables built into the walls next to it (it sounds weird, but you'll see what I mean when you go). Frenchette Bakery is the new bakery from the team behind French brasserie Frenchette in TriBeCa. The bakery is in the old Arcade bakery location not too far away from the brasserie. This place only opened about two weeks ago, but it has quickly become one of my favorite spots in the city and I've already made several trips here to try different things. They have both savory and sweet baked goods as well as freshly baked loaves of bread. Some of their sweet items include the twice baked pistachio croissants, chocolate croissants and the Kouign Amann. Their savory items include baguette sandwiches and interesting ones like the egg savory with kimchi. Frenchette Bakery is only open on weekdays, but make sure you go in the morning because they tend to sell out of some of their popular items like the pistachio croissants. The bakery is just a small window inside an office building and indoor seating is not available at this time due to the pandemic, but this is a great addition to this part of the city. read more

*My First Covid-19 Review* I had never been to Arcade Bakery when it was open [total failure on my part] so I knew I had to try out Frenchette Bakery which is in the same space. They open at 8AM so you're probably better off going as early as possible. I got there around 10AM and there was already a substantial line forming. It went pretty fast though and may have appeared longer just because everyone was more than 6 feet apart. It looked like most of the pastries were still in stock. Tip: look for the little Frenchette Bakery stickers on the doors of 220 Church Street. It is very easy to miss the building since there's scaffolding around. I almost walked right on by. Pear Danish [$6.53]: I got one simple item to go [that's the only option..to go]. The pear danish was good. The pastry was buttery and flakey, it was very reminiscent of a croissant. I enjoyed the sweetness of the pear in the middle, which also happened to be slightly juicy. I probably would have enjoyed it even more if it was straight from the oven. Six dollars may be just a little too steep of a price to pay for a pastry, but as a treat, I would roll with it. The loaves of bread looked absolutely divine too but I wasn't carrying a baguette on the express bus home. The croissant and the pain au chocolat looked delicious too. This place is a hidden gem on Church St. We stumbled upon it onThanksgiving day and it was a great surprise! The server lady was a breath of fresh air with her attention and passion for the products. I had those little cheese balls(they come in 3s). It's light and very cheese. And also the canele which is a sweet pastry also very light and flavorful.
