So, the positive is that it is reasonably priced, portions are big, and the food is good. We liked the green beans, sesame balls, and the fried fish. They gave us 22 sesame balls! A huge portion, and they were hot. Not super crispy but they were also delivered. The reason I may not go back except for these items is that the chicken was funky and inedible. We just threw away the kung pao chicken because the chicken was gross. Same with the Orange chicken. Maybe other meats are fine but I will only do vegetarian here going forward. read more

The chow fun is a standout - wider noodles than I'm used to, with the combination of silky and crisped that you look for, and seasoned perfectly. The little sesame balls are delightful as well. I tried Holly's Mandarin for the first time during quarantine and it has been my favorite take-out place ever since. The food quality is consistently great and there's not a dish that I've tried from here that I didn't like. This is definitely more American Chinese food but there's nothing wrong with that as long as you go in with the right expectations. We definitely try to switch it up with the variety in our order each time. The one dish that we MUST order every time is the bbq pork fried rice. It's perfect - huge portion and reeeeal bbq pork. I like their prawn dishes because they're medium/large-sized and always fresh. I like to get the homestyle tofu because I love fried tofu and it makes me feel a little healthy with the fresh mix of vegetables. When you get those free sesame balls with your order, consider yourself super lucky! These things are so good and still hot when we get our order so it's pretty hard to not eat them all up before eating my actual dinner. I love Holly's!! This is my second time eating here and ordered take-out for lunch. Called in an order for 2 lunch specials- Mongolian chicken and fish filet, and chicken chow mein. They said the order would be ready in 10 minutes...10!! We got there in about 10 and it was ready already- asked for hot sauce, and they mentioned they included complimentary sesame balls with our order, which was an awesome surprise. Holly's has been our neighbor go-to spot whenever we're craving Chinese food. Friendly staff who are knowledgeable with recommendations. They offer an extensive menu, and don't use MSG like most Chinese restaurants. They have affordable lunch specials and set dinner menus for those who want to try a little bit of everything. My go to's are: triple mushroom beef, tea smoked duck, garlic prawns, salt and pepper fish filet, tomato beef chow mein, and Singapore rice noodles. With everything that's been going on, I'm grateful Holly's is still open for take out to serve us healthcare workers that don't have time to cook dinner. Great takeout spot for consistently yummy food! We love the potstickers, salt and pepper chicken, and chicken lettuce wraps. The chicken filling is the perfect mix of flavorful and crunchy. So refreshing with the wrap. The woman who runs the front of the restaurant is super friendly and generous. We often receive free sesame balls (which are delicious!). They are also very accommodating of special requests, and reasonably priced. A go to for many years, and more to come! This is a really good value chinese restaurant option for folks in the East bay. A very large meal for two was just shy of $40 delivered. This was easily enough for two good meals and really makes it worthwhile. The sweet and sour chicken was a bit greasy, but the light crunchy batter was a really welcome find compared to a lot of the doughy options we've seen since we've lived out here. It's much more of a light tempura batter fry than a thick chicken fried steak affair. The chicken was tender and really quite good. The sauce for it was also really pleasant and not sickly sweet. All around great. The chow mein was great. The noodles were a bit tough on the reheat, but first go, they were really tender and tasty. The beef was thinly cut and flavorful. The veggies were okay, not the as crisp as I'd have liked, but for the price it's pretty reasonable. Only real let down was the lack of rice with the entrees, but at this price point I can understand it. I just made my own rice to share with the family. No harm. Pretty delicious Chinese food, that is quick and prompt. Placed an order for delivery at this restaurant on a whim, and it did not disappoint. We ordered a ton of food and it arrived in the cutest box! Some of the dishes I hadn't eaten before and had to call the restaurant about how and what sauces go with which meal. The restaurant was patient with explaining their recommendations and telling me how to prepare the dishes (for instance, the crispy chicken came with a dark sauce, but was not recommended to pour over entire chicken, but rather to use as a dip to prevent chicken from gettint soggy). They are also known for sending a couple extras along the way. We got crab wontons, which was a crowdpleaser. Loved the crispy noodles with chicken and shrimp, the shrimp fried rice, and the lemon pepper fish (my fav!) But everything we got was great, and we definitely plan on ordering from here again. I've ordered from here more than a handful of times and it does not disappoint. My last time here I ordered the walnut prawns, bbq pork chow fun, and the triple mushroom chicken. The prawns were chunky and covered in a thick sweet glaze. The chow fun was a generous portion of big flat noodles with pieces of bbq pork mixed in - a bit on the greasy side, but tasty nonetheless. I love the mushroom chicken. Different types of mushrooms in a brown sauce mixed with carrots, zuchinni, snap peas, celery, and chicken. Yumm! The mushrooms with Chinese greens was delicious and well-presented (in the to-go container!) even though we are not fans of bok choy. The Szechuan eggplant and kung pao chicken were very good. It is good quality, no frills traditional Chinese take out. The price is pretty good for what you get. It's always fresh. It's not too greasy, but I do think it's a tad on the salty side, though I grew up at family dinners where the elders usually requested that the restaurants cooked with less salt. My favorite has got to be the salt and pepper fish. Fried pieces of crunchy, moist fish fillets which push the boundaries of just healthy enough. The noodles are standard quality - I would pick the hand pulled noodles at Shan Dong over these and any regular chow mein noodles, but they're of course not bad by any means. The black pepper lamb is something else - such tender pieces of meat in a perfectly seasoned sauce - that one goes well with rice as there will be lots of extra sauce at the end! This place is our go-to Chinese takeout in Oakland. The food is not greasy. Honey Walnut Prawns is our favorite dish, it's subtly crispy and isn't overwhelmed with mayo. Our favorite surprise are the freshly made small sesame red bean balls. It's warm and crispy and we enjoy it on our short ride home. Tried the BBQ pork chow mein here the other day, and really enjoyed it! There was so much flavor in the dish and the BBQ pork was super yummy. I ordered delivery, and my order even came with a container of edamame that was delicious as well. Their veggie spring rolls were really good too! Overall, the portion size here is definitely generous and all my Chinese food cravings were satisfied. I'd love to try the other things that they have on their menu sometime, as this first experience was great! While I was initially very happy with the reasonably priced menu, what turned this from a 4 to 5 star review is a special little touch from Holly's where they include a FRESH order of warm red bean sesame balls for dessert in your offer (a disclaimer: unsure if there's a dollar minimum for them to add this; each time we've ordered from here, it's been $50++ and I've placed the order via telephone). I'm generally pleased with the quality of ingredients and our favorites thus far have been: -Beef chow fun: Really love the beef in this one! So tender and flavorful. -Yu Shiang (spicy?) eggplant: Expect this to come with lots of oil. Not too spicy. On the contrary, is actually quite sweet! -Salt and pepper fish fillet: Though fried, this holds up surprisingly well in takeout form. It's salty and peppery; a sure winner if you like these flavors and fried white fish. -Shrimp fried rice: Yes! Delish! -Stir fried string beans: Hard to mess this one up, it's exactly what it sounds like. A bit on the oily side. The crab cheese wontons are good if you like crispy wontons and cream cheese. Crab flavor is ephemeral. Hard pass on any type of orange chicken, sweet and sour pork, Mandarin chicken type orders for takeout. Either they already add the sauce so it ends up being soggy/mushy or they keep the sauce separate from the fried proteins, but it's just a bust. I bet you anything these are probably delicious if you're dining in, just tough to enjoy in takeout form. It's on Piedmont, so even if you can't find street parking, there is a little parking lot across the street (depending on the hour, you may need to pay). If you opt for pickup over delivery, highly recommend you simply pick up the phone and call. They really nice, by the way, and I'm 100% confident they will find continued success! If I could give 10 stars I would. I had to place a large order for a school event and initially intended to do it for delivery via Doordash. All their attendees had put in their orders through the group order function, so everything was ready for the order to be placed and confirmed. 2pm the day of the event rolls around. I wanted to place the order for a 5:30pm delivery but Doordash did not provide that option at all. The only time provided was the next day. Needless to say I freaked out because it was too late by that point to find an alternative and have everyone do a group order again. The event was going to be ruined!! I called Holly's and the person who answered the phone was EXTREMELEY patient and helpful in resolving this issue. She said I should have been able to select an earlier time. She got on the phone with DD. I got on the phone with DD. Numerous phone calls and chats later, I ended up having to place a future order and then cancel and have the restaurant just prepare the order and bill me offline. Anyway it was a stressful situation that was made a little more manageable because of the friendly and attentive Holly's staff member. Best Chinese food in Oakland! I have ordered from them twice and both times my food was fresh and hot. The honey walnut shrimp is AMAZING. Lightly coated not to overly fried or saucy. The orange chicken is light as well. Not overly crispy or burnt. I could tell it was just freshly made and not frozen. The orange sauce had fresh peel in it and a great flavor. They're mainly only offering to go service. the staff are friendly and very thorough, but not pushy and rushy to hurry up and make you decide what you're going to order. BEST CHINESE FOOD IN THE EAST BAY: My experience in this category is admittedly limited but this place was not only authentic but tasty. Apparently they have catered for the Golden State Warriors for the past five years. Could this be the secret to the Warriors success? FOOD: Just loved the flavors of this place! Spicy and yummy. SERVICE: Good! Nice sized water glasses and fairly quick service. Like other Chinese restaurants they pretty much leave you alone but are very responsive to requests. Even still they did come by and check-in often enough. COST: Very reasonable! Not only is the cost reasonable but the portion sizes are generous. The food is delicious and I have never gotten sick so that's a plus. The lady that helped me was very nice and helpful. It is takeout only unless you reserve a table. I will always come to Hollys or Becky's to get Chinese food both are so delicious! The chicken chow mein from Holly's is very good, the chicken is flavorful and tender and there is a good ratio between noodles, veggies and meat. I also got sweet and sour chicken and the sauce was separate from the chicken so that it didn't get soggy on the way home, how thoughtful!
