Overall just 'meh' Chinese food. The General Tsou's Chicken was not spicy and did not have much flavor at all, plus the chicken was kinda fatty and gristley. The Bird's Nest was mostly vegetables with very few shrimp and some sad white blanched chicken pieces. The Crab Cheese Wontons were quite good, but didn't really taste like crab at all and there was no crab visible in them. I was there at 11am when they supposedly open and they seemed like they were in no hurry. I ordered the lunch special with lemon chicken and chowmein. Chicken didn't have much lemon sauce and the noodles were kinda dry. When my order was ready the guy told me $12 and I pulled out my debit card when he asked me if I had cash. I handed him $12 (a $10 bill and 2 ones)and he said it was $12.10. I didn't have any change but he noticed I also had a $20 bill in my wallet so he said give him the 20 and he'll give me change. I didn't want to break the 20 for 10 cents so I told him to just put it on the card. He didn't want to and was arguing with me over 10 cents. The lady behind me was saying that he said $12 at first. We ordered the highest rated Chinese food spot for delivery on Doordash. This is my new spot!! I've been looking for a go-to place in Oakland since I left San Francisco years (so many years) ago. I can't drive to Eliza's every time I need some prawns, unfortunately. Frankly, I barely get dressed every day during COVID. But I digress. I'd call this thoughtful Chinese food. The ingredients are fresh and they take care to highlight the ingredients. Okay - wth do I mean by that!? The BBQ pork fried rice had legitimate, BIG pieces of meat. The sweet and sour prawns were delivered with the prawns separate from the sauce to keep'em yum. The Kung pao chicken had large, tasty pieces of carrots and celery and you could really pick out all the different fresh flavors. It was awesome! Mm. We even got some free sesame balls for dessert that were excellent. I recommend wrapping them up overnight because they weren't as moist and good the second day since we left them on the counter. read more

I ordered takeout over the phone from this location during COVID. Time estimates over the phone were prompt. It I ordered the wonton combination soup and crispy duck. I'm pretty sure I received the tea smoked duck instead. The food was not what I expected as in it wasn't overly salty, sweet, or greasy. The sesame balls that came with free with the order was the best I have ever had. Typically I think they are way too sweet but these were perfect. The wonton combination soup was good and the portion they provided was good as well. The duck was okay. I wanted a duck dish that was fattier and saltier and what I received was a "cleaner" version. After passing on this restaurant on DoorDash a bunch of times I decided to give it a try. I was not impressed. Maybe I ordered the wrong items. The best thing I got was the crab Rangoon. The general tsao's chicken reminded me more of kung pao chicken. I do not recommend the honey walnut shrimp. It was really flavorless. We ended up throwing the leftovers out after we finished. COVID 19 review - Staff was friendly and service was prompt. The Chicken Chow Mein was delicious and ended up being two meals for me (they really pack it in). Full disclosure - I was looking for a replacement for a beloved (if long in the tooth) neighborhood restaurant that had recently closed. More disclosure - my taste in Chinese food is likely what one might call very "American", not tremendously adventurous. We decided to try Holly's for the first time in many years. We got lunch takeout, as they are only doing takeout right now. The woman who answered our phone call was very pleasant and professional, a good sign. Until... The Spring rolls were chewy and gooey inside the crispy outer shell, like the wrapper was not cooked through. The badly fried food continued with the Chef's Crispy Chicken and the Mandarin Beef. Neither of these were crispy, and in fact were chewy in a way that you really don't want. Finally the pork fried rice was very greasy and tasted of stale cooking oil. Just a single late lunch take out on a Friday, but I have to post this negative review-- my wife and I felt quite ill for several hours after the meal. read more

We did a large take out order for lunch and everyone continued to rave about the meal for the rest of the day. All their ingredients are so fresh and well prepared. The shrimp in the fried rice and chow fun were huge and perfectly cooked. The hot and sour soup was soothing and comforting. The kung pow chicken was packed with veggies and large pieces of chicken, perfectly seasoned. The salt and pepper calamari was tender and crispy. The portions are large and so flavorful. Holly's is super affordable compared to many other places these days. But we were really disappointed with food quality from our take out experience a few days ago. String beans were not fresh, almost stale, the Singapore noodles had potential flavor-wise but we're so dry, missing sauce. The lettuce chicken wrap mixture didn't taste like other versions of this we've had in other places and had an exceptional amount of celery. Our first time trying out this spot and we were so pleased! The portions were very generous, the food arrived hot and fresh, and we appreciated how carefully it was packaged. We ordered the orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp, red bean paste sesame balls, and veggie chow mein. The orange chicken comes with the sauce in a separate container, which kept the chicken crispy. Honey walnut shrimp was the best I've had in recent memory. Good flavor, nice large shrimp, and the walnuts themselves were nicely toasted and had a nice crunch. We super appreciated the additional sesame balls and crab wontons that were added to our order complimentary! Highly recommend this restaurant, we will certainly be back to try other menu items. I mean everything was either just okay or really bad. This isn't good Chinese food yall. A little disappointing since this place was in Piedmont. Nice place for some greasy, Chinese-American food at good prices. I've come here a lot, and some of the best dishes include the salt and pepper fish fillets, tea smoked duck, and triple mushroom beef. Fish fillets have a nice crunchy breading, and they come with sliced jalapenos if you're looking for that kick, but you can also get it without peppers. Tea smoked duck is tasty, and comes with pancakes or buns (I can't remember which). For something a little heavier, go for the triple mushroom beef. It's cooked in a savory sauce that pairs well with the tender beef and mushrooms. Parking can be hard, but there is a lot if you need it. They also take reservations, which I recommend making if you're going on a busy day like New Year's. You can also order ahead and pick up, but I've heard the food isn't so great out of the box. Either way, it's a good stop if you need some cheap, filling food that tastes good. read more

Ok, I'm really surprised by the reviews here. I think this place is really sub-par. This review is for take out. The food quality just isn't good. The kung pao chicken had chicken with tons of weird chewy pieces in there that aren't really edible. The vegetable dish was just covered with thickening sauce. Things were overly salted in general. This place was quite disappointing as I thought this would be a nice go-to and convenient location. Lin Jia's much better, and probably would pay up for their food vs. Holly's. Becky's is way better and probably around the same price point TBH. read more

This place has gone way downhill. I ordered a delivery because I was home sick. I had to toss it out. It was not what I expected or had had in their restaurant and for take out before! They used to serve a lightly battered (per their description) chicken breast for their mandarin chicken. This was chunks of meat that was not identifiable, with a THICK batter. Plus it took an hour and half to deliver when it was supposed to be here in no more than 40 minutes!! I cannot even eat it! read more

My husband surprised me with a full take-out meal from Holly's last night. He got hot and sour soup, green beans with tofu, orange chicken, and sesame balls with a side of rice. Everything was wonderful! The orange chicken was divine. The chicken was packaged separately from the sauce so it was crunchy after mixing. The sweet, syrupy sauce has strips of orange rind that gave it a hefty tang. The chicken was fried golden, crisped to perfection, and in appropriately bite-sized pieces. I would give 5 stars for the chicken alone. The hot and sour soup had a good dose of vinegar, but not in an overpowering way. It was comforting and just what I would want from a hot and sour soup. I found the bite to the green beans firm, but not too firm. I prefer crunchier green beans, but I would order these again (I can never get enough veggies). And lastly: the sesame balls! These toothsome little balls were just the right amount of crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. They were the perfect way to end the meal. I look forward to my next order :) read more

My husband loves it cook and is very good at it, so we don't eat out or order in very often. But occasionally we like to treat ourselves to good Chinese takeout (we're not dining indoors anytime soon!) and Holly's has satisfied our every need. Neighborhood spot serving classic dishes. If you call your order in directly, they'll spit you sesame balls, which is such a sweet touch. She even offered a flashlight sucker to my 7yr old niece who embarrassed me and asked for an extra for for little brother at home. Shrimp fried rice $11.00 large container enough to share. Fried rice tasted freshly made and really good. Just added some soy sauce. They give you about 6 jumbo prawns which was solid for the shrimp fried rice. The staff was nice and I just did take out so I didn't dine in. I would eat it again and recommend 10/10 read more
