When we got to Home Grown I was very skeptical and side-eyed him very hard as I'm not big on southern food and what could they possibly have for me to eat? He must of read my mind because he said they have stuff for you non-meat eaters. I went over the menu and there were a couple of things I could eat so I decided on the vegetarian biscuit and gravy. It consisted of a buttermilk biscuit with sautéed mushrooms and spinach over an open faced biscuit with a side of vegan eggs. While I appreciate the concept it was overly wet, and kinda greasy for my liking. The part of the biscuit I found that wasn't wet was pretty good buttery and soft. Nothing Fancy, just good breakfast food. The service is generally always good, and so is the food. The best thing about this place is probably the vibe. Lots of wonderfully curated art of all kinds. At times I've been their thinking the staff is very much curated as well in order to sync with the atmosphere which intentional or not seems to work. I came here a couple of weeks ago for the first time. I pass by it all the time after my workout class across the street so I finally decided to try it out one weekend. Normally this place is so so packed, you'd have to wait for a long time. We only had to wait about 10 mins (guess that's the one good thing about covid). They are practicing social distancing with tables, etc. You are required to wear masks when on premise (unless you're eating of course). Despite them taking precaution, I still felt like I would probably not opt to dine in again until covid is over. It's very hard to maintain social distance in such a small space and people aren't always wearing their masks correctly... and eating from disposable plates and utensils takes away the experience for me. Anyways, on to the food. My bf had the Comfy Chicken Biscuit and I had Donnie's breakfast. We also ordered a few sides as well. I would say my favorite was probably the biscuit. We didn't wait for too long considering it was a Saturday brunch time. Classic dinner food with a bit of a southern twist! Grits were creamy and buttery. Really liked their chili, it was savory and went great with the grits. My favorite was the comfy chicken. It was so creamy and crunchy, their lemon hot sauce went well with it. They also have a wonderful selection of different hot sauces which was fun to mix and match with our food. Imagine you are looking a breakfast spot, as you drive by, you see this "little hole-in-wall" house. Does not look like a restaurant. But, the parking lot is full to the point you must wait for a park. Once you walk inside, there is the clean restaurant. The best breakfast meal I had in a long time. Scrambled eggs cooked perfect. Homegrown is one of those places that remains a low key hard-to-park hole in the wall sort of place that has amazing food. If you're a tourist like me, you're happy to find a place that services hearty food that doesn't spare on the butter because it displaces you to a place with good comfort food. Now for the dishes themselves, the fried green tomatos are quite tasty. But of course everything pales against the chicken and gravy which is divine. Just a hearty dose of gravy over somewhat-light-somewhat-heavy fried chicken which makes it all the more scrumptious for a very tasty meal. Some words of advice? Served with gravy, jam, or just by itself, the humble Chicken Biscuit is the one menu item you use to separate the great breakfast spots from the rest. When it comes to Home Grown's Comfy Chicken Biscuit, it's pretty damn hard to top this mountain of protein, fat, and carbs. Home Grown in and of itself is an interesting signpost for the New South and what Atlanta is (or strives to be) in the 21st Century. A rustic-looking one story building with green accents, it's located on State Route 154/Memorial Drive right next to a particularly scenic leg of the Atlanta BeltLine. Inside the restaurant, however, the vibe can only be described as ATL punk. From alt culture stickers to hoodie-wearing employees whose sleeves are barely covering up a mosaic of tattoos on their bodies, this is not what I expected to see at one of ATL's most popular breakfast spots... which I suppose is the point. This ain't your granddaddy's Atlanta for sure. While Home Grown's Comfy Chicken Biscuit may have started as an off-menu employee meal special, it is definitely one of the more popular items to order now: practically every other customer around me had an order sitting in front of them. When they bring it to you, it is a sight to behold: hills of fried chicken presented open face on biscuits, with a thick gravy covering everything like a blanket. Served with a slice of orange, it's an almost comical sight... until you reach the end of the meal and realize that a little bit of citrus actually helps cut the fattiness just enough so that you're able to peel yourself off your seat. At $12 for the Comfy Chicken Biscuit and $3 for a bowl of Cheese Grits, add on a coffee and a cup of orange juice and it'll run you about $20 for breakfast here. If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, that's a reasonable price to load up on all that food. However, if you're a regular person with a regular routine, the Comfy Chicken Biscuit will probably put you out of commission for the rest of the day... after a meal like that, a comfy sofa or a warm, soft bed beckons. Having had many Chicken Biscuit meals in Atlanta by now, I find myself wondering why the chicken is never made from dark meat and why the biscuits are never as soft and flaky on the inside as I would like it? Maybe that would be overkill, but I feel like a brined-and-battered chicken thigh over fluffy-yet-flaky biscuits covered in sausage gravy would take the dish to the next level... but who am I, a Southern California boy, to comment on such things? I've had their Comfy Chicken about three times now and it's always so good! The portion is perfect for a brunch. My boyfriend always sings about how good their comfy chicken is lol. A hidden gem of east atlanta! Jason and Daisy have always been so welcoming, even when I was just a new comer. I brought my parents to Homegrown right from picking them from the airport, and Jason was so patient with my mother who's quite particular. We had a small wait, but that's nothing in the grand scheme of things. Homegrown describes the interior as well, inside is a random assortment of local art for sale, stickers from locals and random odds and ends. The food is priced quite fairly, despite how delicious and locally sourced it is. I can get coffee for 2 and 2 dishes for under $30... how wild is that!! I also ordered a peach pancake to share. The chicken biscuit alone was enough to fill me up! The pancake alone probably would've also filled me up considering it's the size of the plates there. Pancake wasn't anything too special, but my cousin said she enjoyed and I quote "I'm usually not a pancake person." Also, those oranges on the plate were so juicy that I wish I had gotten more!!!
