Homegrown GA is the breakfast/lunch diner that's taken over the Memorial Drive space formerly occupied by the much-eulogized Mammy's Kitchen. The menu is not extensive and is straightforward breakfast fare but everything I've tried in my couple of visits has been delicious and well executed: eggs are cooked just right, the spinach and tomatoes in the omelets are fresh, home fries are not greasy, and the grits are nice and creamy. Prices are very cheap with breakfast plates ranging from $5.50 to $7. I've not yet tried the lunch but if the breakfast is any indication, it will be a solid value. I was expecting a stellar experience based on all of the reviews, but the food was so-so at best. I had the French toast, which lacked the gooey goodness of a well soaked piece of bread. It was dry and required lots of syrup to finish. The cheese grits were sub-par and were really run of the mill. My boyfriend had the pancakes, which left a horrible taste in my mouth. They taste like bisquick mixed with water. No amount of butter or syrup could bring them back from the bottom of the culinary barrel. The fried green tomatoes were under seasoned. Despite the blah food, we really enjoyed the service. Our waitress was very nice and informative. We may be back to try the comfy chicken, which is their specialty. Really good cheese grits here. They do not skimp on the cheese. Speaking of cheese, I had an omelet that was bursting with melty goat cheese yumminess and super delicious roasted tomatoes. Talk about COMPLETE satisfaction, sheeeeesh! I totally enjoy the hippy/hobo atmosphere. Most of the wait staff has some sort of tattoos and/or piercings and cool hair...My kinda place!!! At 9AM, we had a 20-25 minute wait for a table for 2. Portions are huge and very good. Try the Lynne Stack and pancakes (Beware! The portions are HUUUGE! Order a plate for ypurself only if you are very very hungry. Otherwise, you can split a plate with someone.) Try to come earlier to lessen wait time. The only reason I did not give them a higher review was because they charged me14 instead of 4 dollars for two drinks. (A coffee and a sweet tea). Took my out-of-town sister here the morning after Thanksgiving. Despite being quite obviously very busy, every single staff member was super cheerful--it was a very warm place to be. If they were even a fraction as hungover as I was (and I hope they were), it probably would have been easy for any or all of the crew to want to be anywhere else than working in an at-capacity restaurant. It's been one week since I ate at Home Grown. I wish I could fly back to Atlanta and eat there again today. Non-pretentious spot with varied clientele, great service, and great food. Had the steak hash with a side of grits. It was amazing. I even ate it for breakfast the next day. Steak was in big chunks and delicious. Grits were creamy and awesome. Had a lovely brunch here today. There was a bit of a wait, but nothing terrible. Especially since the people-watching here is entertaining. The service was excellent, warm and homey. Our server even brought us a sample of the homemade pimiento cheese. Let's just say my husband was converted to a pimiento-cheesist after that! Homegrown lives up to its name, from the homestyle dining area to the fresh garden in the back yard area behind the parking lot. I had the mac & cheese stack, great burger and side put together. I would like to see another bun option besides the Texas toast (just a personal preference). But no other complaints. I also tried the bbq shrimp and grits, but they weren't anything to write home about. The grits weren't creamy (which im a personal fan of) amd the bbq sauce didn't add to the flavor of the grits. I'm from New York and our breakfast places don't do southern cuisine good. Ate at this place 3 times during my trip...The biscuits with sausage gravy was savory and the biscuit was fluffy and moist. The Lynn stack which is a salmon cake, a fried green tomatoe topped with pimento cheese sauce was truly amazing!!! I do not understand what everyone is raving about. It's a basic breakfast --- it's good, but it's not a "I will wait in line for 30-90 minutes for this" kinda place. Server (Matt) was very nice, friendly and helpful. The two guys running the register were rude and dismissive of customer after customer. Sadly, another customer stated that one of them was the owner. Not sure if that's true --- definitely hope not as it doesn't bode well for service in the long run. read more

Dont do take-out! Sorry, guys I gave it two tries and both times(after a long wait)received food either missing items such as mayo on the bread or the smallest entrees ever known to man. I ordered the cabbage and I swear I got maybe 4 under-cooked leaves in some type of sauce. The atmosphere is laid-back, very come on in and kick your shoes off type of place but I feel that when it comes to take-out they just dont have it down. By all means sit down and try it, judging by all the great reviews they do sit-down very well. As for me, I gave it the old college try and I wont be back. If Im going to pay 15.00 for a sandwich and chips, park in the worst parking lot imaginable, and wait 20 minutes to boot, at least give me some food, make sure all the condiments are there and make it all worth the effort! read more

This place must be a pilgrimage requirement for hipsters, because looking around the dining room I saw no fewer than 10 bearded and suspendered clones discussing their vintage woodworking tools over plates of bacon and gravy. This was after 20 minutes waiting for a table, and 10 minutes looking for a parking spot. The reward was diner food. I am making the assumption that the appeal and popularity of this restaurant rests more with its atmosphere and sub-cultural cachet than with the food. Although the food was not bad, it is certainly not of a standard that should warrant parking wrapped around the street and a 20-minute wait. At best, it is uniquely packaged comfort food. Objectively, I received a bowl of okay grits topped with eggs and Chef Boyardee flavored chili. The others in my group received fried chicken, grilled chicken and sides that were no better than most pedestrian dining experiences off any expressway exit of your choosing. I would say that Waffle House meets Cracker Barrel is the best summary for the overall quality and selection. The best compliment I will provide is that the portions were pretty large. If you rate your dining experience on pound per dollar, you will probably be satisfied as the food is not bad--it just isn't special. read more

The tacos were alright- wished the chorizo had a little more unique flavor but otherwise was quite a healthy serving and the eggs in it were fluffy. Friends loved the comfy chicken and breakfast burger. Service was timely and smooth. Parking is a little hard to come by but street parking avail when lot is full. Eclectic vibes with different pop art pieces from diff artists splayed across the walls. Quaint thrift shop towards the back of the restaurant that's fun to browse for unique items. I find more restaurants in the Southeast offering local ingredients in a no-frills atmosphere than in Texas. Big cities in Texas love to play up "country cuisine" but in hoity-toity restaurants, with dishes such as King Ranch with $20 price tags. On the other end of the spectrum, small-town joints in Texas offer Pillsbury biscuits and french fries fried from frozen. Just a critique on my favorite state in the world. It's tough love. I just wanted to bolster this review a little bit, since I really enjoyed HG, an establishment that blends the "local" touch with country classics. The fried chicken biscuit brought up nostalgia for the days when eating a Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit (HBCB, TM) every Friday night at Whataburger after football games was the norm. A buttery biscuit sandwiched around a piece of juicy fried chicken, who can beat? Chili cheese fries and gravy are homemade, from the fries being cooked to order to the gravy boasting all the floury, milky goodness hand-crafted beginning at 4AM. HG, in the sticks of East Atlanta, off Memorial: thanks for giving my wife and me a taste of the South. It's been almost a year now since I discovered Home Grown and I am officially in love with this place. I adore quaint little family-run places like this where the staff recognizes the repeat customers, and I'd like to think of myself as a one of those regulars now. Owners Kevin and Lisa have hit upon a food niche that I didn't even realize I was missing: simple and delicious dishes that taste like home cooked comfort food, and at very reasonable prices. You won't go wrong with any of the vegetable options since the produce is locally grown - some of it from the garden right behind the restaurant. And if you want something a little more substantial, I highly recommend their Comfy Chicken Biscuit that's drowning in the most amazing sausage gravy on the planet. And I dare you to walk past the cake stands out front and NOT want to try all of the desserts. The place is small so you may be in for a bit of a wait, particularly on weekends, but it's definitely worth it. Parking can also be a challenge, but there are some nearby side streets. Home Grown has sneaked onto my Top 5 list and it looks like it may be there to stay. Save a seat at the counter for me! read more

Sadly, my fiance doesn't love good ole southern comfort food like I do, so I don't eat it as often as I'd like (probably a good thing health-wise but you know.) I came here with my mom after reading/hearing about it and I'm so glad I did. It hits all the southern spots I wanted it to. I got a chicken biscuit with bacon, egg and cheese on top (the server was surprised I wanted it all on the same biscuit, but TRUST ME so delicious.) Whole biscuit was perfect. Delicious, peppery chicken. On the "side" I got the chili cheese home fries which are an insane portion and so, so good. I always think it's lame when fries don't have enough chili or cheese on them but these were absolutely smothered. Sadly, I could not finish this meal. On the plus side I had leftovers! My mom is very picky/demanding and she ordered the comfy chicken biscuit and then claimed the whole thing was way too peppery for her (it was peppery, but in a good way!) The server was so amazingly accommodating and completely recreated the dish with a chicken coated in their panko breading instead of their normal chicken breading and their lunch gravy, which was more like turkey gravy. My mom loved her bastardization of the comfy chicken biscuit and I always give props to restaurant employees who humor her. OH and everything is so reasonably priced, especially for the portions. Ridic value. I'm on the west coast for a few months and writing this review is making me super home sick. read more

Going out to breakfast makes me happy and a new restaurant in the neighborhood that has good prices, good service and good food. YEAH!! They make a darn good biscuit sandwich and I loved their cheesy grits. My friend had the omelet of the day and to my surprise it was perfectly cooked, not burned at all. I can not stand burnt eggs and for some reason restaurants everywhere are allowed to get away with it. Anywho they have changed very little about the decor but they did remove the thick layer a of grease that covered the walls when the space was Mammy's. Definite plus. My only compliant about the place was the ventilation. We left smelling like what we ate and it lingered for the rest of the day. We are already planning to go back and often. read more

I visited Home Grown this morning with a couple of friends and enjoyed every minute of it! This place is awesome. I had the basic breakfast (eggs, toast, grits & bacon) and added a side of home fries. The table split an order of friend green tomatoes. My friends each had an omelet. We were all very pleased with our choices. The grits were creamy and delicious. Fried green tomatoes were perfect. Home fries were just like Daddy used to make for us before school. Sooo good and very affordable. The atmosphere and energy was great. Everyone seemed happy to be there (both guests and staff). As a member of the restaurant industry I wanted to be sure to mention that this server staff was amazing. They all worked together to make sure every table was taken care of (ran food for each other, provided refills for everyone that needed them not just the quests in their own "section", cleaned tables when the walked by (even if it wasn't their table) etc. It was nice to see a staff that cared about the guest's experience and thereby the success of the business. It's a rare Sunday that finds us home-bound, rarer still when we're in the car by 8:30am, headed to Lowe's -- yes, we got there right as they opened. Thank the end of Daylight Savings Time, for this, and for creating enough leisure in our day for a morning stop at Home Grown. It's the combination of pure and tasty food that only gets better when the morning sunshine streams in that inspires me. It would be difficult not order the green tomatoes with their crispy fried coating and creamy horseradish dip, and the menu is flexible enough that diners can build their own breakfast without breaking the bank. Hearty appreciation for the owners for resisting running with the pack and gouging diners on morning coffee and juice. It's kind pricing that adds to the friendly vibe. My breakfast choices that day warmed my belly & soul. Let's start off with the less positives: -The omelet was very flavorful, but had so much butter/oil that we used 3 napkins to sop it up. -the turkey sausage was also pretty greasy with very "meh" flavor. The positives: -like I said, the omelet (mushrooms, onion, cheddar, spinach) had great flavor and the portion was huge. -the chicken biscuit was awesome. The chicken was full of flavor and was a generous portion. I also added a fried egg to the biscuit, which I highly recommend. -the fried green tomatoes were good, not hot when they came out but the flavor was good and it came with a side of ranch which Is always a good compliment.
