Beautiful, verdant eatery serving up the worse Hue food I've ever had. Need to call up the bf's aunt to let her know her title's been stolen. It's new, clean, and gorgeous. Sunlight streams through clamboring (artificial) vines. Menu is well-organized with visual aids. Seems like the whole package, but the food. Appetizer #9, Banh Beo Khay Hue, was an ominous opener. This is usually a fun treat where you spoon out rice cake that's been steamed in tiny individual dishes. At Hue Kitchen, it somehow stuck to the dish and was a pain to scrape off. Not fun. The Bun Bo Hue was bland, lacking the fragrance of lemongrass and the pungence of shrimp paste. It was also missing pork hock and pork loaf. Glad I got #2 which adds a few slices of rare beef on top like pho. Points for creativity. Service was non-existent and preferential. They offered the ladies at the next table free tofu desserts but not us. When I overheard and asked, the server tried to play it off like he was going to bring it after I finished my meal. But those ladies got theirs before their meal even started. Nice try. Oh there's more. On our way out, 2 workers stood by the door and stared at us. I thought they might say "thank you" or "goodbye" or open the door but nada. Then they walked away after we exited. Wha?? I'm an ABV (American-born Vietnamese) so I don't know if this was just a case of culture clash. I do know that amongst all the restaurants and friends/relatives showing off their culinary prowess, this bowl of BBH ranks dead last. ** Response to owner: My visit occurred recently on 10/07/23. I think the food here is very authentic Huế/ Đà Nẵng. Very yummy! The portion is big, full of toppings. The thing that impressed me the most is the restaurant and the bowls/ utensils are very clean. If you're craving for Huế's dishes you should give this restaurant a try! read more

Everything about the soup - from broth to bun bo spaghetti type noodle, fish cake type of meatball, radish, cabbage and herb accompaniments are top notch. You can just sense the natural freshness. New owner for about 1 year made major improvements for food and services in this small place with about 12 tables. It's nice, clean, bright, pleasant, smelling neutral. We got in about noon a Sunday. Most tables were already taken. Half hour later about 10 people were waiting outside for seats. So they did something right and the place is popular. We ordered a Bun Bo Hue Special with extra rare beef $14.95 and a Banh Canh Tom Cua central taste, $14.95, 2 hot teas $1 each. BBH's broth is a rich, tasty bone stock, nice, clear with the tastiness of fermented shrimp paste without the odor, not too sugar sweet and not overspiced. There was barely a hint of lemon grass. a tub of satay is at the table to customize spiciness to taste. So far this is the most balanced and best BBH's broth I found in So Cal and No Cal. There was generous meats, extra rare beef, shank, a few small bites of tendon, 2 cubes of blood curl, a large slice of pork butt, a chunk of pork ball and a chunk of short rib. No pork trotter was served, which is my preference. The meats were cooked to my preferred chewiness. I would skip the rare beef and short rib in next orders. I finished the soup and wished the bowl was bigger. This is by far the closest to the best home-made BBH I had in central Vietnam. In comparison, for the same price, Ngu Binh serves a larger bowl by about 50% with more protein and tastier broth, but the broth is greasy and way over spiced. Banh Canh Tom Cua has clear crab broth, fresh and tasty but a little too sweet for my taste. The wait staff is courteous and efficient. They gave us a small cup of soy bean dessert, tasted good. I wish the owner would add an option for a supersized bowl 50% larger. This place would be my second choice for BBH after Ngu Binh. read more

Food: we got Banh Beo, comes with 9 mini plates topped with shrimp, and pork rind with a side of fish sauce. 10/10. Brought back childhood memories of my dad and I eating banh beo! We also got Bun Bo Hue which was SO flavorful. Service: very nice staff and very attentive. When we ordered 2 orders of the banh beo they even said " are you sure it's not too much" which tells you about their character. They're not trying to just sell you anything. TBH, I was contemplating on not writing one bc I lowkey want to gatekeep this so I don't want have to wait for amazing viet food but my desire for them to succeed outweighed my selfishness so here we are I grew up eating really really good home made hue food bc my family is from hue so no restaurant has ever come close to my expectation but boy did this place surprise me. I was on my way to pick up Bun Bo Hue at my other regular spot when I drove past this Hue Kitchen and made a U-turn. I'm glad I did! I ordered it to go and it was ready quickly. If you're ordering to go, make sure you heat up your soup properly! I do mine stove top 3 times while pouring it over my assembled bowl each time. It just tastes better when it's HOT. The BBH was very good! Each place is a bit different and I would describe this place as not too salty nor spicy. It has a clean good flavor. I will definitely be back. Location is easy to find and parking is not an issue. Customer service was also very warm, friendly & inviting. If they start to offer online ordering then that would be even better. Got the pork and shrimp noodles today and it was fantastic. Soup is flavorful, hearty and filled with vegetables pork and pork ribs and two good sized fresh and firm shrimp. Extra vegetables and herb toppings can be added into the soup or even just eaten (like I did) as an amazingly fresh salad. One of the best spots for bun bo hue in orange county!! The broth was flavorful without over powering flavors of MSG or artificial flavor. We got the original BBH and the one with a large beef bone. The beef bone was tender and meat fell off the bone with minimal effort. I will say the broth wasn't too spicy, but you can always add more chili on the side to taste. We also ordered banh bot loc, which was chewy and warm. Some were slightly undercooked, so it was a little difficult removing it from the banana wrap. Service was quick, despite it being busy on a Saturday afternoon. They were friendly as well. Each table got a complimentary coconut jelly dessert in the end. It was silky smooth and creamy. I was craving bun bo hue. I live in Ktown and there's nowhere super close that has bun bo hue (at least from my Yelp and Google search) so I was feeling a little more adventurous than normal about driving somewhere to get bun bi hue and Hue Kitchen popped up. Right off the bat, when I pulled into the parking lot I was so relieved to see that the parking lot was empty but I'll note that it was also a Sunday evening. Being that I live in Ktown, an empty parking lot is a blessing. When we walked in, there was only one other table with people seated. Once we sat down, someone came to take our order for drinks which was only a Coke and a water. When they brought out the drinks they also brought out a small little cup of their dessert which was a coconut pudding type of thing. It was tasty although I didn't finish it because I was craving my SOUP AND SAVORY STUFFS! So I ordered the banh beo appetizer and #3 soup. I'd never had banh beo but thanks to TikTok, I wanted to try it. It was super tasty and I loved it. My friend ordered the #1 soup. When the bun bo hue came out, there were HUGE pieces of meat that I was very excited to see. I did add chili oil for a little more heat and fish sauce to balance out the sweetness, along with all of the other dressings. I like to have it allllllll MINUS cilantro because yes, I am a cilantro dis-enthusiast. The other thing I'll note is that this bun no hue didn't come with as much of a kick to it as I would've expected which is why I added the chili. And another bummer was that it didn't have as much of a lemon grass flavor in the broth, it was kind of more like a regular pho broth which is probably why I added the fish sauce ‍. It came with the thicker noodles which I don't like as much but overall it was still really tasty AND incredibly filling because of how much meat there was. 3.5 stars, but rounded up because the service was so nice. My first time here, and it was a good experience. I was seated immediately, and I ordered the bun bo hue (#1) and the mi quang. The bun bo hue's portion is a nice size, and they provide a good amount of meat compared to other places in the area. There isn't a strong lemongrass scent and it was a little bland, but they leave fish sauce and chili oil on the table for you to spice up the broth. Beware - the chili oil is pretty freaking spicy! I preferred the mi quang over the bun bo. Typically, mi quang has the yellow noodles, but it's not here, so don't be surprised if you don't see the iconic yellow noodles. It tasted great, and it had a good amount of meat as well. Each noodle soup dish comes out with its own greens, which I really liked. They also gave us free tofu pudding as dessert! As previously mentioned, the service was great. One of the workers, assuming the owner or related to the owner, was so nice to me and my boyfriend. He always made sure that we were doing okay, and he and the rest of his staff always had a smile on their faces when talking to us. I can review the food:) I frequently order Bun Bo Hue which is my all time favorite dish, I tried many places and they all have their signature way of cooking it, but this place fit my taste bud. They cooked the broth in a traditional Central VN way.. by boiled the shrimp paste separately and only use the juice to put in the broth, not put the whole thing like others shop usually do. Therefore, the soup still cleared but can taste it and well flavored (love it!) Another thing worth to mention here, the owner is very honest.. I don't eat pork so when I placed an order, she will told me which I should left out instead of pushing to sell. I'm very surprised that this place is not packed, I recommended my friends there to try and they all love it, said nice clean place and good quality food. That's my 2 cents opinion. read more

[The Story] Upon my return from Vietnam, I was craving Vietnamese food like crazy! One of the many dishes I had was Bun Bo Hue, a spicy broth dish from the coastal city of Hue in Vietnam. Before leaving to Vietnam for vacation, I wasn't incredibly fond of the dish- favoring Pho over it's spicy cousin; however, during my travels in Vietnam, I grew fond of the dish because it had a flavor profile that was unique in it's own right. So since I've returned- I went searching for a new Bun Bo Hue spot that I'd never been to in order to fulfill the missing void that was left in me when I had come back to the states. **** [What did We Order] 1x Banh Beo Tom Kho (Circular Gelatinous Rice Paper topped with Dried Shrimp and other ) 1x Bun Bo Hue + Tai (Hue Style Beef Noodles with Sliced Beef) 1x Mia (Sugarcane Juice) 1x Mia Dâu (Sugarcane Juice along with Strawberry) Totaling: ~ $45.00 USD no Tip ---- The Food: 3/5 Naturally, the appetizer dish (Banh Beo Tom Kho) had come out prior to the entree (Bun Bo Hue + Tai). We were able to sample the appetizer dish, which was accompanied by the house fish sauce they presented. The Gelatinous Rice was a bit undercooked/not fully steamed, so when we had gone in for the bite, we tasted the flourier texture. Moreover, the piece of Pork Skin Rind they garnish was a bit stale and took away from the dish more than added. A few moments later, the Bun Bo Hue made its was to the table. After having a brief taste of the broth that was presented, I had to request for a small cup of "mam tom," or fermented shrimp paste, to bring the dish towards authenticity. In layman's terms, it was bland and missing the crucial flavor profile I was searching for. What was a nice touch was the fact that they do not include the Pork Hocks (Gio Heo), so you don't need to worry about the bones splintering in the soup. Though there is no actual pork hock part in the soup bowl, the owner states that they've added the meat that is within the hock. Doing this allows the guest to stay clean while also enjoying the Bun Bo Hue. As for the Mia(Sugarcane), it seemed stale - not really anything special. Though it was sugarcane, the drink itself was not sweet, and I felt like an idiot for ordering something so bland. ---- The Service: 4/5 When I've arrived at the quaint restaurant, it was a bit difficult to find parking- especially since we went during the morning hours. The owner was there along with his employees to welcome my party of 2. Luckily, there weren't too many people in the restaurant when I had the chance to dine, so our orders were taken quickly. 10 mins after that our dishes had come out and soon after that one of the employees had given us a serving of Tofu Pudding that was light and not too sweet, which was on the house, sort of like a promotional item to draw more guests in. Whenever I wanted a napkin or when I requested for the mam tom, an employee was always on top of my needs, which is actually refreshing.
