It's apparent that the time of night and weather have a impact on the quality of service and the food you get at any restaurant. When we arrived at the restaurant around 5:30 p.m. I am not by any means a early eater but since I was being chauffeured by my coworker I wanted to be conscious of his commute home . The restaurant was was starkly occupied due to the huge thunderstorm system that moved through. Since I am not a from this area , my co-worker, who was in the mood for fish and did not want to fight the traffic any longer suggested we come here. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our server came by and she was very pleasant and cordial and took our drink order. She was also quick to point out there 20 for $20 special on bottle wine which was a good deal for us. After asking her many questions about the menu and specials , which she was quick to answer and help us make our decision. We both chose the Ahi tuna. Our dinner arrived quickly and cooked to perfection. The tuna I ordered cooked medium rare was outstanding. I substituted broccoli for the potatoes that came with the dish and the broccoli was cooked perfectly al dente. A big pet peeve of mine is if broccoli comes out like a dish rag I won't eat it. So when she came back we had both wiped our plates clean without a morsel left. I will be staying in this area on my next visit to Atlanta, and will visit this restaurant again. I frequent this place a lot ! I looove the food and service here. The waitresses and waiters are really nice. I have been dining here for lunch for about a year now and I have yet to have a bad experience. I usually get the old fashioned burger or the chicken. The burgers are delicious and the chicken is divine ! I also get macaroni as a side, every time. It's that good. With a glass of wine my lunch may come up to be about $20 before The tip. Great place! As I had been traveling for business to Atlanta for the past couple of months, I had actually been into this location a couple of times. Each time I made it a habit to try something different, and each time I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. Firstly, the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. They try and get you into your table with as little a wait as possible. They are always prompt to check on you and take your order. The food is always quickly prepared and the portions are decent. Prices are a little higher then you may expect from this place, but the quality makes up for it! The location is beautiful, and they have a great outdoor seating area where you can sit and have drinks while you wait for your table! Check it out. Great for lunch/dinner. I've been to this J Alexander's location a long time ago and I was game to bring my dad for their prime rib to celebrate his birthday for this recent visit. Making reservations is easy. On a Thursday night, they were able to seat us earlier than our reservation time. There just wasn't anything on the menu that appealed to me. I'm not a huge steak fan, so right off the bat, I'm picky. I ended up ordering the Pierre Burger and I asked to have cole slaw to substitute the fries. They still gave me fries anyway, that I had to flag down my waiter. The burger has a lot of good flavor because of the onions and dijon sauce. Gruyere cheese is a nice touch. I probably should've gotten a side salad because there are no veggies on this burger. I had a bite of my sister's ahi tuna salad. It's a pretty generous portion, so I probably should have gotten that. The only thing I didn't like was the wasabi. There was something extremely fake about it. This restaurant is a lot like Houston's, but pales in comparison to their food and service. read more

This restaurant has really gone down! We had dinner with another couple Saturday night. It used to be one of our go-to places because it was always consistent - NOT ANY MORE!!! To start, a vodka and tonic and a gin and tonic were finally served with no lime. Had to ask two different people to get it. When our entrees were served, we had to ask for the sides that were to accompany it. We had almost finished eating before they finally arrived. The meals were mediocre at best. At over $100 for two people, you expect better. We waited over 20 minutes for our dirty plates to be removed, and that only happened after repeated requests on our part. I went here for a work lunch the other day and it was absolutely delicious! The atmosphere was very classy and upscale for the area which is a nice change of pace from all of the fast food restaurants in the area. The service was pretty good. Anyway, I ate the Alex's salad and it was delicious. Fresh lettuce with bleu cheese crumbles, sliced cucumbers, carrots, and cheese. I substituted the honey mustard dressing for bleu cheese dressing which was also a very nice touch. I am sooooo disappointed. I really liked this restaurant, but last night for a $100 meal...I was pretty bummed. First, the pomegranate martini has changed...think they forgot to add the alcohol this time...something just didn't taste right. Then the grilled artichokes have definitely gotten smaller. The entree I got, the Caesar salad with salmon was first of all, a lot smaller than they used to serve, and secondly, the salmon was overcooked, dry, and unflavorful. We have a winner!!! This was my very first trip to J. Alexanders and let me tell you what, their veggie burger has won my heart! Let's start from the beginning: My boyfriend and I decided to go to J. Alexanders on a Saturday night because we had a coupon and I had never been. The restaurant is, as others have already mentioned, quite similar to Houston's but hey...whatever works! Initially we were seated at a booth next to a big window and I quickly requested to be moved after noticing quite a chilly breeze. After getting situated and comfy we began to peruse the menu. We decided to start with the onion rings to share and a house salad with bleu cheese. The onion rings were described as colossal and they were not kidding!! They were stacked, one on top of another, and probably reached about a feet and a half tall with each individual ring being about 3 inches wide. They were very yummy, as was the salad. What I loved most about the salad was the bleu cheese dressing. I prefer my bleu cheese to be stinky, it should not taste anything like ranch!! Upon choosing to dine here, I was aware that I had the choice between a veggie plate and a veggie burger. I decided to go with the veggie burger because I honestly feel as though I'm not about to spend $x on vegetables (although I was later today that it was quite amazing!). My date went with the filet with bechamel and a baked potato. My veggie burger was fantastic!!! For a brief second I questioned whether or not I had the veggie burger, thinking they may have accidently served me meat. The burger was glazed with a teriyaki sauce and it was solid. In the past I've had many veggie burgers that have just crumbled, not this one! I would definitely come back for this burger time and time again!! I hadn't been to this JA location in about 4 years, but decided to take a friend for lunch for her birthday, as all of my past experiences were pretty positive. This visit was exceptionally bad. To say the service was cold would be an understatement. From the runner to our actual server to the manager who brought out the food after they got my friend's order wrong (without so much as an apology) - they were all stone-faced and nothing even resembling friendly. Had they been busy I would have understood, but the place was nowhere near busy. It was actually almost comical how all three of them had the same blank stare at each encounter. So, as I said, they got my friend's order wrong. They took it back to correct it and the replacement took longer than the wrong one. No apology, nothing, just the blank stare. And - well, they got it wrong the second time, too. She didn't tell them it was wrong the 2nd time, as she was just over it at that point. Nobody ever stopped by to ask how things were, but they did drop off new drinks before we finished the first, which was appreciated. All in all just a big disappointment. And at $48 (including tip) for two people at lunch without alcohol...well, just not worth taking the gamble again. read more

It's so much better than that. The service. The atmosphere. The food. It's all 5-star-worthy. My favorite dish is the grouper topped with crab meat and a lemon butter sauce. The tuna looked awesome and I've been told that the porterhouse was fall-of-the-bone good. We always start with the queso dip. Their salsa is amazing, to me, all because of the unassuming hidden ingredient, radishes. And the carrot cake was awesome. FOOD: I had their seared tuna salad which is a great combination of protein and vegetables. The seared tuna was a little overcooked, but still had great flavor. This was my first time at this location. I love the atmosphere of the place. The layout and design of the restaurant are beautiful. The service was excellent and right when we sat we were instantly greeted and got our drink orders in. For an appetizer, my sister and I ate the fried calamari, it was cooked to perfection, definitely worth it. For our entrees she had the crab cakes with the acorn squash. Those crab cakes were all crab meat with the perfect sear on each side yum!!! I had the prime rib with their Mac n cheese. After I wrote my review on here, I was contacted by this location's GM... Which totally took me by surprise, as that is not the industry norm. He was courteous, genuinely apologetic, and invited me to come try his location again... last night my significant other and I did, and we were not disappointed. THAT is the J. Alexander's that I am used to. Excellent service (with personality). Caesar salad was crisp and perfectly dressed. Calamari was tender and delicious. Fish tacos were completely on point and seasoned to perfection. The mac and cheese was scrumptious... And the chicken tenders were crispy and juicy. If you are planning on going soon, I suggest trying their squash... spiced and sugared butter over two generous wedges of squash. I could have eaten that as a meal, and been perfectly content. Furthermore... the kitchen's timing last night was literally that of a michelin star rated restaurant. Clearly my first experience was a fluke. J Alexanders is one of the few "nice" places for dinner in Norcross. I go here a few times a year for week day or Sunday night dinner; we are always seated quickly and the service is prompt and friendly. The one time I tried to go on a Saturday there was a wait, so I ended up going elsewhere in the Forum - why wait when there are so many good options? Everything I've had J Alexanders has been delicious. The salads are large portions and very flavorful and filling. The regular burger is tasty, and the veggie burger is out of this world. The fish tacos are enormous, and the steak & fries is a good cut of meat with nice seasoning. The drinks are outstanding - lots of interesting and subtle flavors. They always come with a side car, which helps offset the exorbitant price ($12? Really?). So with all that praise, why the 3-star rating? Because while J Alexanders is solid and tasty... there's nothing exemplary about it. It definitely does not go above and beyond any of my expectations for a restaurant of its type. Perhaps if it were more bang for the buck, or the same price but more innovative I would bump it up a star. Bottom line: good food, good drinks, good service. J Alexanders was right by our hotel so we stopped in for lunch. It was a little much for my family on a saturday morning but everyone really enjoyed their food. I got the fish tacos, and they were VERY delicious but a little too pricey for the lunch menu. It is definitely more of a dinner place but we were satisfied! Nice space with above average food. Salads are strong as are the burgers. The vegi burger is house made which is awesome, though the texture is a bit pasty. Usually service is good; but last visit we were seated in the tables near the bar - and the bartender acted as our waitress. She forgot to bring water (three times) and the order was a bit messed up. It was odd, in that she was at the table several times asking if we needed anything, but then failed to actually deliver on any requests. I will assume that the service lapse was an anomaly. We went here for a business dinner. The ambiance and setting was perfect--relaxed but attentive, up-scale but not stuffy. The wait staff were on top of their game, and the food came out really quickly. My martini was refreshed without my asking--apparently they had been out of the sidecar they usually provide, so they just made a second martini. Food seemed pricey for what was offered. I got the Maui steak with smashed potatoes. The steak was delicious, but I thought the sauce was not up to quality of the steak. I would have preferred vegetables to the potatoes, but that's just me. My husband loves this place and comes to this location with his coworkers for lunch. Once I tried the restaurant in Dunwoody location and wasn't impressed back in 2012 and haven't been since. I finally gave it another try again right after Christmas 2014 at Peachtree location. They have excellent customer service. They will watch you from afar and always prompt with drinks refill. The entrees were pretty good but I was throw off by the dessert. We ordered fish tacos, and special of that day which was golden sea bass with couscous. The fish tacos were very good. They deep fried good size of cod fish. The fish was season well, lightly breaded and crispy outside and moist inside. The sea bass was also cooked well, golden brown outside and moist inside. Fried Shrimps accompanied with the fish were deep fried and just okay. I personally think the sauce is a bit too much which make you sick toward the end. They cooked the couscous pretty well, it was very spongy and flavorful. For our desert, we ordered a chocolate cake to share but was very disappointing. The cake was way too big and not tasty.
