I always wonder about the places that are named the best. After all, it's subjective. For me, this is the best spot for spongecakes. The translation is literally paper wrapped cake and they really nailed the recipe here. It's not the usual cup shaped cakes but it's a flatter, wider version. Highly addicting. I recommend ordered a box because you will go through it in just a few days. Taste and texture are light and just enough. Nice crust on the outside and majestically fluffy cake on the inside. The sweetness is just enough and you can't stop at just one! Pricing is a steal. I believe it's $1.25 for original and a little more for other flavors. [[HIGHLIGHT]]You can easily miss the place under the scaffolding but keep an eye out for the signs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a much older spot inside but keeps true to it's authenticity and history.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
I came here after seeing fellow yelper Ruby C's reviews on Google maps and her recommendations never disappoint! I honestly thought what could be so special about sponge cakes (after all they are just sponge cakes, right?!) but they were unexpectedly good. So soft, light and airy - almost like a cloud in your mouth. And despite the airiness, they were so flavorful! Don't let the modest exterior fool you, when you slice them open, the cakes are so colorful on the inside. We got the Ube and Green Tea; the Ube was delicious and such a pretty purple but as a Matcha lover, I fell in love with the Green Tea! Very friendly owners - they recognized us from before and immediately asked "Ube?" lol.

The sponge cakes here are unbeatable. THE BEST in NYC!!! If you're sitting in and you get the original sponge cake, they'll typically give you a fresh one out of the oven (which is SO GOOD).
My aunt brought us here after a day in Chinatown. My relatives said the place reminds them of the old bakeries in the Philippines. The service is quick and easy. My go to spot whenever I'm craving soft, fluffy, light, and moist sponge cake. They offer a variety of flavors, but my favorites are the original, butterscotch, and ube. Whenever I'm in the area, I almost always pick up a box or two for my family and friends. The staff is also very friendly.
Hidden gem literally that was a serendipitous find! Best flavoured sponge cakes I've had in a really long time. We got the Ube and pandan cakes, flavors are not too strong but we loved it! Lady at the cashiers desk was so sweet, when she found out we're aren't locals, she invited us to visit again the next day and mentioned the flavors they would have available. They rotate flavors and ofcourse I would have loved to visit for a lychee rose sponge cake! Definitely a must try place for teas and cakes!
So my partner has been talking about the sponge cake from this place for as long as I have known him. Which is more than two days. Get your mind out of the gutter. Anyways, he's been getting these from his cousin when she's in New York. I have a work trip to New York. The first thing he says is: "I'd like two boxes." First of all, I've never really had these sponge cakes so that seems like a tall order. Anyways, I make my way there. The most saucy and sweet lady is working the counter. I decided I'll order one for myself to see what all the fuss is about and she says, "you need to eat a warm one". I felt like this was more of an order than a suggestion, so I nod my head and take it to the corner. It's delicious. DELICIOUS. The coffee is also legit. Might be the best sponge cakes in the city. So many flavor varieties, friendly service and a variety of drinks. And very affordable! The sponge cake itself is SOOO soft and has great flavor (as described). If you go early you might be able to grab a fresh one - this is totally worth it. They are hot and there is a slight crust/crunch to the top exterior which doesn't retain once it's cool down and put in a bag. My favorite is the original, then ube and then matcha (the matcha is a heavier flavor so it makes the dough a little more dense). Their drinks are average but compliment the sponge cakes well. You're here for the sponge cakes anyway.
Kam Hing Bakery/Raspberry Hibiscus Tea: [[HIGHLIGHT]]While waiting in line, I had trouble reading the menu on account of multiple racy posters blocking my view.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered this drink as a consolation because my original choice was sold out. The tea was very refreshing and sweet; it surprisingly surpassed my expectations by a long shot!
This cash-only establishment is a staple in Chinatown and known for their soft and fluffy sponge cakes. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a bit hidden, but has seating on the inside, where you can enjoy your food and drinks.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff here was so so friendly and sweet--giving me recommendations on drinks and their sponge cakes. I highly recommend coming earlier in the day as I went at around 3pm and most of their spongecake flavors (except 4) were already sold out by then. I ended up getting their pandan, chocolate chip, and classic sponge cakes as well as their green thai tea drink and everything was delicious. The sponge cakes were probably some of the fluffiest sponge cakes I've ever tried and the green thai tea was sweet and paired well with the cakes. My favorite cake was probably the chocolate but all were delicious. I would love to come back to try some of their other flavors!
The staff (assuming they're owners) are very friendly, we have been a few times only and the lady gave my kid candies when we were lining up to order. I love the original, coconut, ube and butterscotch. The pandan one doesn't taste like pandan and is bright green. This place looks kind of old but it's clearly an institution.

I don't know how they make any money, especially in this town, but massive credit to them. It's always full but that's not saying much cuz this is a tiny little place. Just like their other place. Anyway, it's absolutely legendary for providing Chinatowners (and not usually tourists, but actual locals, hence the prices) with these little cookie sponge cakes, and they're very good, and not like anything else you'll have. It's very basic and not something you'll be posting on Instagram (like most of my exs) but who needs that (um, me). Try something different for a change. Come and see what it's all about. My only complaint - why is Kam Hing always closed outside of business hours. Come way early to make sure you don't miss them. I have no idea why they do that, and it's getting a little old. I may have walked passed this place hundreds of times and not even notice the sign. Boo boo and I saw it because we were parked in front of the store and we were waiting to not pay for parking. We shared the green tea, coconut and the original. The green tea was very bold and strong with green tea flavor. That was our favorite. The coconut was like eating paper and sponge cake. The original was like eh. The guy was nice enough to let us use the bathroom too. read more

This place was great! Very hidden, if you're not paying attention you could walk right by. I would recommend not going too early if you want options in terms of flavors- I went on a weekday morning ~9am I believe and the nice lady at the front told me that they only have 3 flavors available and it would be better to come back around 10:30-12 to make sure I had more options! I went back a little after noon and they were all available! I tried the regular, chocolate chip & cinnamon crunch and they were all so good! I had stopped by for an elite perk, but I will absolutely come back to support this local business. Each time I went the staff was so friendly and helpful. I had no idea what flavors to get and they helped me pick. Definitely stop by if you're in the Chinatown area read more

Probably not--but because of the high quality of their offerings and their genuinely warm and welcoming service, I just can't help myself. Ever since I was a little girl, I've been OBSESSED with the sponge cakes from the different Chinatown bakeries my grandma would bring me to. I can't believe I've somehow never been to Kam Hing Coffee Shop before today, but I am so glad that I finally discovered this hidden gem (thank you, Yelp Elite Week for including it in your celebration of AAPI Heritage Month) because the sponge cakes here are delicious! My boyfriend and I stopped by around 5 PM on a Thursday and while there were only a few flavors left (DEF go earlier if you want more choices), we were excited that we were still able to get our hands on their Pandan, Chocolate Chip and Original sponge cakes. All three were so light and fluffy and I appreciated that the flavored ones weren't *too* overpowering. Our favorite was the Chocolate Chip one... that combination of airy sponge cake and melty chocolate chips? *chefs kiss* Not only are the sponge cakes tasty, but they're also ridiculously affordable! They're currently running a promotion where you can get 3 spongecakes for only $2--I will DEFINITELY be back soon to take advantage and try even more flavors! read more
The place may look dumpy but the sponge cakes are good. They have a huge variety of flavors. I ended up ordering 3dozen variety and the owner was nice enough to give me a discount. My favorite ones are the original and the coconut. Hubby liked the black sesame. The lychee rose was very unique. You could definitely taste it. read more

I've been eating their sponge cakes for about 20 years now. They were a staple when I was younger, a treat after my weekend tutoring lessons. But I'll admit I haven't had them as often in my adult life. Well today I decide to do a side by side comparison with SC which is conveniently right across the street. After having it again after an absence, I must say it isn't as I remembered. I got a dozen for $8, I believe it's a current promo. Initial impressions, same shape and color as I remembered. However, as soon as I tore into one I could tell that something was off. It was definitely a lot drier than back then. I did hear mention that the old owner sold the shop to someone else so perhaps they kept some secrets. I would most definitely visit Spongies shop across the street instead. It's opened by one of the old employees and that is the moist delicious golden cake that I remember. read more
I came down this street by accident on my was to the market, but I am so glad I did. I love Chinese sponge cake and Japanese cheesecake due to its light airy texture and lack of sugariness. And these are probably some of the best sponge cakes I've had ever! The dad at this place was the shining star for customer service, the ladies, not so much. They were friendlier to other customers of other backgrounds but I guess I did not fit the demographic that they felt like being nice to this particular day. The dad helped me select a few flavors and even came around the counter to help figure out what they still had. I went with brown sugar boba, butterscotch, original and strawberry. Though they were all clouds of lightly flavored deliciousness, I think it was butterscotch or boba that was my fav (caramel colored dots inside) I couldn't tell which was which. I wish I git a few more. I will definitely be back, hopefully the ladies are less brash next time. read more

This place is the ultimate representative of old school Cantonese in Chinatown! Stopped by here out of the rim and attained a few items from the extensive breakfast/snack menu. The namesake Spong cake or aka 紙包蛋糕。 Legit. It was eggy and spongy, not too sweet. Just the way I like it. I got the pandan (green color) and original flavors. Both were good, though I like the pandan a bit more for the aroma. If you like mint or basil, got this. Beef tripe in five spice broth was good and apparently marinated and cooked down to a tender texture. However it was a tad too salty. Now, the fresh, made to order rice roll. This is probably the best I have had in NYC, non joke. It was light, not doughy and just the right portion of filling and rice roll. One thing I do want to call out. The shrimp one was not using fresh shrimp and it was over cooked. My suggestion is getting the dried shrimp version or other fillings. I will definitely return whenever I am feeling home sick! read more

Best and cheapest sponge cakes in town - soft, delicious, and heavenly! We got 12 sponge cakes for the very low price of $10 and got to try a bunch of delicious flavors. I'd get all the flavors below again except for maybe the Green Tea-- ORIGINAL: Love! Light, airy, melt in your mouth delish. PANDAN: I'm from Southeast Asia, and this tasted like home! Such a beautiful aroma and taste. My only gripe is it was really green and I'm not sure if it's all natural pandan vs. food coloring. The flavor was A++ though, so I'd willingly eat it again. CHOCOLATE CHIP: For any chocolate fans, this is a great light dessert that's full of small pieces of chocolate. COCONUT: Basically same as ORIGINAL, just has some light coconut crunch. UBE: My bf really liked this, I could've skipped it. Like the Pandan, this was quite purple but maybe this is naturally occurring. GREEN TEA: Green tea flavor is strong, I didn't mind it as it tasted like a sweet green tea. SERVICE We came Saturday around 4pm. All the flavors were still available except for Black Sesame (note the menu placards may not be accurate on what's available vs. out so just check with the cashier). The owner's mom sold us the 12-piece box and she was really sweet and helpful helping us choose popular flavors. Service was super fast, and there are lots of seating inside the store and outside with comfortable chairs. We paid with cash, not sure if they take credit. One small issue we had was when we got outside and opened the box, we couldn't tell which flavor was which. Only Pandan and Ube flavors were distinguishable because they were green and purple; others all looked similar to the Original flavor. So if that matters to you, check with the cashier which flavor corresponds to which sponge cake before you leave. Can't wait to return-- looking forward to trying the other flavors and the Ovaltine and other drinks! read more

Yet another no frills GEM in Chinatown. Tasted the ube, green tea and cinnamon crumb cake and much to my surprise cinnamon was my favorite bc it was the most moist and the crumbs gave it texture. The thai tea was delicious for only $2.50 and the green apple lemonade was so refreshing on a hot day ($3). read more

Stopped by to get some treats for my coworkers and family. It's $10 for a dozen of assorted flavors. Not sure about the pricing for a dozen of the original. The worker there was very patient when I was trying to figure out which flavors I wanted. I went around 12pm on a Wednesday and they already ran out of green tea. I read reviews about not going too early because they won't have as many flavors available yet. I also ordered a Thai iced coffee but while the worker asked me about the sugar and condensed milk I didn't realize he was asking me about thai iced tea. When he made the Thai iced tea instead, there was a slight confusion but he was fine with making the drink I wanted. That was really nice of him. Not all places do that! I inhaled the Thai iced coffee. It was so good. He also gave me 2 sanitizers and a stamp card. You get a stamp for every dozen box you buy. As for the taste, I was told the coconut ginger was very ginger-y. I enjoyed the cappuccino and it wasn't tooo sweet. The coconut had coconut flakes in it. Definitely a great gift or snack for people who prefer pastries that are less sweet. Unique and inexpensive!! Would go back again to try the other flavors I missed! read more
We came here for iced Vietnamese coffee on a hot day after our run in Central Park, and realized they also have pastries so we decided to try the sponge cake. I didn't know what a sponge cake was even though apparently it's popular in Japan and Southern China. There are so many flavors to choose from and very reasonably priced. The lady at the counter was so patient with me and my friend as we asked questions and having a hard time deciding which flavors to get. In the end we got green tea, orange and pistachio flavors and loved them! I would definitely come back for more traditional Asian sweets. What a gem! read more

i literally did not know that this place was like mere steps from the other sponge cake place called spongies cafe. i heard lore from like the regular at the other sponge cake place that the owners or partners at this place kicked the other dude out so he opened it across the street. and if that isn't petty idk what is. but i went here because i also this place on ig. and they DO have different flavors and it was like 10 times longer than the other place but honestly it tasted the same to me. the flavors were interesting and it was like 25 cents cheaper but it was whatever. they had no seating so i ended up staying and studying in the other rival cafe for like 5 hours. if you want to save 25 cents per sponge cake i would go here but otherwise i think spongies cafe is fine. and i might be biased cuz they let me stay there for so long and i felt insecure like can i do this but then i forgot that i'm literally a paying customer like bro. and the story is highkey funny. read more

So I just stopped by here this morning at 8 am for a meeting and damn the cakes are amazing! I had Lynch Lemonade that is so fresh, should have gotten a large. A week later now I'm back at a RunStreet Art Run thats being hosted here! Yea more sponge cakes (my favorite Cholocate Chip) and Lychee Lemonade!! I got a large this time and my security (Akita, Kiyoshi) is with me like always. It's great to see two businesses come together and support one another. Long Live NYC Chinatown! I'm not sure there's a more perfect snack/dessert in NYC. Love and obsession at first bite. Several mouthfuls later, the ultimate Asian auntie seal of approval comes wonderingly out: "so good... and Not Too Sweet!" These sponge cakes are a slamming deal at $8-10/dozen and they're equally delicious whether you get them here or at Tonii's. Pictured is Ube, also had Pandan which brought me back to Singapore and I inhaled the matcha cakes so fast I came back for more. Can't think too much about why I didn't buy several dozen the last time I was in the area or I'll cry from regret. Don't be like me, buy several of every flavor and tip well, everyone's so nice here! The sponge cakes are delicious, customer service is great as well! I had the original (still warm), green tea and coconut, highly recommend it! Going to make this short and super sweet like my visit, this place is AMAZING. The cakes are moist, great texture (light and fluffy) and so flavorful, definitely a new favorite desert for me and place to take visitors when exploring Chinatown. Long time fan and customer. Their sponge cakes are small delights. Fluffy airy oval cakes that my dad grew up eating, that I grew up eating and now my daughter will also grow up eating. With their new location, there's room for people to sit and enjoy their food. They have other dim sum items, which I'm actually not sure if they had before since all I get was the cakes. I like their green tea sponge cake too, but nothing beats the original. I can literally eat 3 of these in one sitting. read more

Wow!! These were absolutely INCREDIBLE! So light, delicately sweet, with a fantastic texture. I tried the chocolate chip, butterscotch (sweetest), and ube! The ube didn't have a super strong flavor (i believe it's like a sweet potato) and if you didn't know, it's bright purple! This is such a good on-the-go snack (and did I mention soooo cheap! Like insanely cheap for the quality). I was reading through other reviews and apparently these are pretty authentic too!m. The people working there were SO SO NICE!! I can't imagine how hard it was to be a small business owner throughout the pandemic and I'm so happy for all of the businesses that have been able to make it work. Been coming to this place for years and its about time I left a review. The drinks here are all good, I personally love their Bangkok Iced tea though. Besides that, all the sponge cakes are delicious. Be forewarned though, the differences between the flavors are quite faint. Some more noticeable ones are coconut and chocolate. They're all very fragrant for sure though. Hop by and give it a try, super cheap. read more

Man of man, I love their sponge cakes. The trick is to come early but NOT right at the daily opening. The different flavors run out quickly later in the day. Yet if you come here too early, some of the flavors are not ready (still being baked). The cakes are not big but it still has good value. The flavor ones are a buck each and you can get a dozen for $10 (including tax). I am a fan of the original flavor and I usually get the special of 3 for $2. Because they are freshly baked for the day, the cakes would still taste good the day after! read more
My friend introduced me to Kam Hing & their sponge cakes in the last year (pre-pandemic), and I'm so glad that they did. Otherwise, I probably would never have discovered it on my own. You would never guess from the storefront/entrance that there is a food establishment inside, and a sign outside hangs overhead so I never noticed it before. They recently reopened in late November after closing temporarily due to the pandemic. I've only had the sponge cakes, which are mainly what my rating is for. Most sponge cakes that I've had are a little dense and heavy. But, Kam Hing's sponge cakes are so light, airy, and bouncy. You can easily eat several without realizing it. They usually have a number of flavors that change periodically. Some flavors are original, chocolate chip, green tea/matcha, coconut, butterscotch, and strawberry. What's even better is they are (currently) priced at $1 for original and $1.25 for flavored ones. They often sell out of flavors each day. The sponge cakes are lightly sweet and are great with coffee or tea for breakfast or a snack. The counter along the back of the shop is where you can order sponge cakes and other pastries. It's decorated with a collection of funny, sarcastic signs. (The counter on the right side of the shop sells other food, but I can't remember it being open on my visits.) There's seating (pre-COVID), and the decor isn't fancy. But it's a place where community elders hang out and chat, which I think adds character. (BTW, the sponge cakes are also sold at their sister business, Tonii's Fresh Rice Noodle on Bayard.) read more
My family and I often stop by for boxes and boxes of their famous sponge cakes, each box containing a dozen. Today was another visit and we walked out with 3 dozens of them to distribute to the entire family. I subtracted one star because there are inconsistencies with the texture of the cakes at times. I ended up trying out the ube, matcha and coconut. All the sponge cake was nice and fluffy. The ube one has a beautiful vibrant purple hue and you can taste the sweet nutty/vanilla flavor that is associated with ube. The matcha one has a strong matcha taste but not overpowering. They incorporated coconut flakes in their coconut sponge cake thus adding to the texture. Each bite was very pleasant. Overall, all 3 was very delicious. I went to try 3 and ended up walking out with a dozen (original). Brought them to work & it was gone in an instant. I have to go back to buy more for my baby boy. Since my kid started solid, he love sponge cake. Unfortunately most of the Chinese bakeries I been to make their sponge cake so darn sweet. Kam Hing Coffee Shop makes their sponge cake with the right amount of sweetness. Since babies can't have too much sugar. I feel comfortable feeding this to my baby. I understand why they are oldest sponge cake store in NYC. For them to stay in business in 30+ years is impressive. The staff is amazingly sweet Ambiance: This is not your modern coffee house. Even thou there are table and chairs, it's not meant to be use for hours. Please don't bring your laptop and chill. It's more like a quick bite and go. Tip: if you get their early, try to request a hot sponge cake. You won't regret it. read more
