Not many Texas franchises and products make it over the California border (whataburger,blue bell, pappadeaux,rudys, etc - phoenix has it but not here) This brand made it. This is the only place I know in So Cal to get kolaches... Being from Houston, I'm obviously a huge fan... Kolaches started my love affair with food (no really, there was an online forum called egullet with a long thread about a kolache shop in which people would constantly post about new flavors). I was so excited to see this place while driving by one day and finally made it out coming back from Santa Ana. I signed up for their rewards and used the B3g3free deal. I had two jalapeño sausage with cheese (soso), philly cheese steak (yum), Italian chicken (the best), sausage and gravy (not too shabby for breakfast), chorizo something (don't remember this one too well). Kolache....NOT! Being from Chicago, originally, where a considerable number of Polish immigrants landed, we all should know, first off that a Kolache is Polish tart and it's all about the pastry. They may have used meat filling in them but I have never had the pleasure. My experience has always been fruit or, a fruit compote filling. What is served at the Kolache Factory is a preformed chunk of white bread, similar to common burger bun, a mediocre budget bun at that, with some sort of filling placed in the molded center. I happened upon Kolache Factory by chance this morning on my way to work, I made a U-turn when I saw the word Kolache with very high expectations and with fond memories from my early years in Chicago when my mother, who is not Polish made them authentically from recipes taught to her by her Polish friends. Kolache is made with a special kind of pastry that is sort of flakey, perhaps no where near as light and doughy as bread nor as heavy as pie crust but it might be closer to the danish crust. It does, however have a very unique taste, quite different from anything you have ever tasted, that is, if you have never had a real kolache. Whatever they are making at the Kolache Factory is definitely not a kolache. It is essentially bread with any sort of filling but, certainly not a kolache. I had 2 fruit filled items this morning. lemon and peaches, and I will say the filling was good, (even though they did not have my favorite, apricot), the fruit filling was acceptable and tasty. But, the filling is not the kolache..... It's the pastry that holds it! To those big shot corporate bean counters I offer you this: If you are going to peddle kolaches, look up and find the real recipe for authentic kolaches.... or, just change your name to bread with filling of some sort or another!..... I stopped here to grab breakfast to go. I first tried kolache when my co-worker shared one with me. Kolache is a Czech pastry which is fruit filled. Here at KF, they also carry the savory kind. These little rounds buns come in so many versions. The bread is quite unique. It's texture is soft and chewy. On my first trip here I checked into Yelp and got the buy 4 get 1 free offer. Otherwise, it is kind of pricey ranging from $2.19 to $3.50. The loot I decided on: ~Ranchero: scrambled eggs, diced ham, jalapeños, and spicy salsa. My fave!! Very flavorful with a kick. ~Sausage, egg, and cheese: very good. It's a breakfast plate stuffed inside a bun. ~Philly cheese steak: yum! Meat is tender and juicy. Flavor is on point. The bun was smaller than the others. ~Ham/cheese croissant: a bit different than a typical croissant. Very flaky and delicious. The ham was diced. I like soft. I like it warm. I love it fresh especially in the morning! What did I just have! Polish bread stuffed with eggs and bacon! And danish... I tried the cherry and the cream cheese and I prefer the cream cheese. If you are on a diet, have half. It's very very very filling. My boss at work served this to us during our monthly meeting. And it really hit the spot. Why? It's your ultimate comfort food! The dough was just amazing!!! It's like a an empanada but it's not deep fried. Well baked with love and goodness.. This place is AMAZING. Kolache Factory is an absolute gem that everyone needs to experience! I heard about this place through a coworker, who brought a few kolaches to work one day. Upon the first bite, I was hooked! Since then, I've probably eaten 50+ kolaches. No joke. For less than $4-$5 a bun, you get a LOT of food. The value is great and not to mention, they have plenty of options. My favorite are probably the breakfast kolaches, so sausage egg and cheese, ranchero, bacon and cheese, potato, etc. Next would be the pizza, bbq brisket, chicken enchilada and Philly cheese steak. Moral of the story: they're all good!!! I usually get three kolaches and that more than fills me up, but even one or two is a lot of food. My husband and I came here from the recommendation of our friends. What took us so long?! We tried the potato/egg, sausage/egg, chorizo, sausage/gravy. All fantastic! Originated in Texas with over 2 dozen locations...although only one in all of California. Kolaches are delicious and yet it seems no one knows what they are. I've taken them into work in the past and my coworkers had no idea what they were. However, after eating them they were hooked. What's a kolache, you ask? A whole lotta calories. Actually, think of your standard dinner roll, not the artisanal kind you might find at quality bakery, but the mass produced kind you find next to the Wonder Bread at the supermarket. Now think of it stuffed with some kind of filling. That's basically a kolache. To be honest, I'm not a fan. The bread is way too doughy for me. I think one reviewer described the bread as "pillowy." This was not pillowy, unless your pillows are made of memory foam. And the filling is just whatever. I got the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese ($3.19) and the Ranchero ($3.19) and was not impressed with either. They're heavy, doughy, and kinda bland. If I want a fattening breakfast, give me a bagel or doughnut any day. If you do decide to come here, though, politely decline the well-meaning offer to have your kolache warmed up for you. They will use a microwave, and if you've ever microwaved bread, you know how ruinous that can be. Instead, take your kolaches home and bake them in a warm oven until they're golden brown. You'll have a better crust and, hopefully, a better kolache. read more

This is an honest review from a Texas girl who has eaten loads of Tex-Czech kolaches in a lifetime. The kolaches are 5-star but the service was really below 3 stars but I was feeling generous. For the most part the kolaches were what I remember getting in Texas but more bready than ones in TX but they are still good! Love all of the Savory versions and the sweet versions! However the service here is definitely not to Texas Standard. The girls are not polite, they try to to speed your order along, they are curt and I always feel the need to hurry up and get out of there. By all means don't ask them if there are additional kolaches in the back, they will firmly let you know there are none. We drive from long beach to get these dang things. I realize the place gets busy and we need to be prepared with our order, but that's no excuse for being rude. A friend of mine recommended for me to try this place. Originally from Central Europe, kolaches are soft pastries with a center filling. This is perfect for any individual who needs a breakfast fix like me! Sunshine: Great breakfast meal. Its main filling consists of scrambled eggs with tomato. I was pleased that the eggs didn't spill out once I bit into it. Not messy at all! My only suggestion is that it could use some salt. Sausage & Gravy: I decided to try this one based on Yelp reviews. The meat was good, but for some reason, I did not like the gravy. I guess it depends entirely on your taste palette. Italian Chicken: My favorite! The chicken was soft and tender and the all flavors worked nicely together. The place is very clean, but small. There are a few tables and chairs, but it looked more of a order-to-go kind of place. The cashier was welcoming and efficient. They also gave the option to heat up your food before it's given. My only disappointment is that there is none in San Diego. I like the kolache but the people there are not my favorite. I go there maybe two or three times a week. There is often a problem. A) I stopped using the reward system because they never add your purchase. B) they oftentimes our flavored coffee into the unflavored dispenser, C) warm up my kolache please....I think this one person is so lazy she puts in the microwave and doesn't press the button, d) $6.03 for coffee and a kolache, I give you $7 and you give me ten coins back and still short me? I come in over a hundred times a year you think you would not worry about the $0.03 rather than short me. I was in the neighborhood, so I wanted to give it a try! Their balls bombarded with all these nasty ingredients, you order the specific ball of dough and they give you something totally different! Theyre more of a Burrito in a ball than anything else! You also ask for them to warm them up and they give it to you cold! Most of my order was given wrong! Over priced as well!!! Food is very reasonably priced, service is great! Called in a catering to go order a few days prior and Kathy took my call. She was nice, knowledgeable and very organized. I told her how many people we had for the breakfast meeting and she gave me her recommendations. Ringed me up and told me exactly how much everything cost and also sent me an itemized receipt. On day of, I came by to pick up the order. All the utensils, cups and napkins were already packed and ready to go. In and out in a few minutes, no hassle! I was eating bacon egg and cheese that I bought Sunday morning and saw a hair stuck between the egg and bacon! Disgusting! What a strange and tasty little creation. I've never heard of a kolache before my friend told me to try this place. But the freshly baked breads stuffed with interesting fillings were surprisingly good. The sausage and gravy and the ranchero ones were my favorites. The bread was light and fluffy and it had a nice balanced flavor. These inexpensive treats aren't anything to write home about, but they make for a perfect little breakfast snack. I was hankering for some Tex-Czech kolaches and went to the Kolache Factory. We bought several kinds: 1. Texas Polish Sausage - Our favorite! It has a nice smoked sausage inside along with jalapeño and cheese. 2. Sausage - A small bit of polish sausage in the bread. Not enough flavor. 3. Sausage, Jalapeño, and Cheese - A smaller version on the #1 above. It has a smaller sausage and is quite good. Highly recommended as well. 4. Bacon, egg and cheese - These seemed light on the cheese and need some seasoning. Could barely taste the bacon. Would not try again. 5. Sausage, egg and cheese - this was made with breakfast sausage. It was slightly more flavorful than the Bacon version but I would probably not get this again. All in all, pretty good and something that is very hard to find in Southern California. I've never physically been here but my boss stopped by and bought some kolache to try. I tried the jalapeno, sausage, and cheese along with the Philly cheesesteak kolaches. They were good but they would have been better warm or fresh from the oven. These are definitely good for travel. It's completely encased in dough so it's the perfect car or picnic food. They are kind of pricey for what they are since they are relatively small but delicious. I'll update my review when I actually visit the store myself. For now, it's A-OK in a good way.
