Asked the staff whether they change owner as I looked around & saw most new faces. Manager wasn't the same anymore. This place used to be great but the quality has seriously gone down hill. For a restaurant that has a michelin star, you would expect more. We used to order from Laut all the time but will never order again. The pad thai we ordered came dry and almost unedible. For a restaurant that has a good rating, they should at least TRY to make their food taste good. The fact that they treat online orders like they don't matter is a huge problem. I was there at 3:10 pm for Lunch today, the door says they serve lunch till 3:30. I walked in and the host (Liam) told me that they are close in 15 minutes, I told him the door says 3:30 pm can we eat. He told me I have to order and eat fast ( doing the hand gesture of stuffing food in my mouth fast) and finish eating by 3:30. I requested to see the Manager and he said there is none. The is the worst service by a host in NYC. Unfortunately, a bad customer service experience tainted the store and i am a regular customer there since it opened. Will NEVER eat there again. read more

Here is an attractive option for Asian foodophiles like myself - a nice-looking place that is decorated with some colorful artwork. They call themselves a Malaysian/Singaporean/Thai restaurant, which sounds like it might be too much, but actually the dishes we had all went together nicely and were well-prepared. The prices are a little high, and you will not get massive portions, but you probably will not be disappointed by the quality. Tom yum soup was enjoyably tangy and sharp, The rendak (?) chicken was tender and full of peanut flavor, and the masak kicap with (a stir fry with certain spices and vegetables) was very pleasant. The server was friendly and helped get our dishes prepared with the right chili levels, although he did forget to bring me the tea I ordered. I also think we may have gotten overcharged a little, and I'm taking a star off for that. read more

There was SO MUCH sugar in everything! We ordered the fish ball appetizer, which was kind of rubbery, but the sauce was pretty good. The two noodle dishes and the two currys were basically like dessert. The real bummer is that I think the flavors would've been pretty great, if they weren't so overwhelmed with the sugar. All around the service was great and food was great. I ordered coconut galangal, calamari, as well as a side of sautéed chicken, all so tasty! Service was fast and the mango drink very tasty. Not sure what all the :( reviews are for - at lunchtime, Laut is great. We walked by it and decided to try it, not knowing it had been previously Michelin-starred (although I'm surprised it was!) Lunch specials ranging around $10-15 dollars for a sizeable quantity of delicious food, definitely comparable to the rest of the area. My drunken noodles, while not spicy, were as a whole, one of the most delicious bowls of noodles I had before, and the next time I'm back in NY, I'd love to try more. I liked the green peppers they threw in, and overall it was just perfectly flavored noodles, just the right amount of savoriness, and I couldn't stop eating it. Ask the waiters/waitresses for their recommendations, and see what they like, they'll steer you in the right direction. read more

When we're in Union Square area, this is our favorite place to eat. Ambience and decorations are pleasant. Restaurant gets a bit noisy when full and service can be a bit harried. But you come here for the food which is outstanding. We started with shared veggie dumplings which are light as a feather. Side of sweet soy sauce goes well with them. My wife had mixed veggies with tofu and I had chicken massamon. Food was fresh, hot and we'll prepared. Portion sizes are generous. Can't wait to go back! read more

Joined a pair of diners already in progress who had already worked their way through a bottle of wine. There was pad thai and one other noodle dish with tofu on the table together with what appeared to be a fish special. The food was acceptably sauced and seasoned, the service was attentive without being intrusive. The party I joined thought the wine list could be upgraded to improve the quality and selection. The dining room is not very large and people waiting to be seated get bunched up in the entryway, but the staff doesn't rush out diners still at their meal, which is appreciated. read more

Lotta stuff went wrong here. Almost the entire restaurant was empty and we got sat next to the only other couple. Weird, but they let us move. Drinks we ordered were overly sugary. My friend got pad thai and the limes they gave her were extremely old and dried out (almost no juice). She asked for new limes and same thing. I love Laut -- It is authentic food from Singapore that is simple and delicious. My regular order includes a lychee martini, roti canai (the best EVER), the soft shell crab, and steamed fish. i'm not going to lie. i came here to try the food since its one of the few if not only malaysian/fusion cuisine to have a michelin star. my coworker came and suggested that i try it since the prices arent too steep. little did i find out she came for the lunch menu! the prices are not bad but given the food i had, i would have taken my money elsewhere. like to chinatown where the real malaysian restaurants await your money. we tried: soft shell crab: $13 for a pretty good portion/larger than expected. it was fried and coated with sugar and tasty anchovy and peanuts: $5 for a small bowl that i could have easily tossed together. nothing special here. curry potato puff: am i a fool becuase i expected the curry puff to be stuffed with fillings? it had nothing but sweet potato mash inside which was quite a disappointment. the puff pasty itself was ok. tom yum soup: $5 for a bowl with 2 shrimps, decent bowl of tom yum basil beef fried rice: the beef was a weird consistency. either it was really old beef or it was coated with too much starch/flour. it almost felt like fake beef.. hainese chicken with rice: this might have been the biggest mega fail of the night. we expected the authentic hainese chicken like in chinatown but it was totally wrong. everything was so wrong about it except the spicy sauce on the side. the chicken was nothing more than chinese garlic chicken (the kind you get in family dining restaurants). there was absolutely nothing hainese about that. thai iced tea: $4.50 a glass was decent and pretty tasty. i should have known that michelin star doesnt mean the place serves authentic food. i also wonder how it received the star because the food wasnt exactly fantastic. it was just an OK meal. i was busy thwarting flies while eating which wasnt exactly appetizing either. read more

Stumbled upon this place for a very late lunch. Since the restaurant was pretty full, we figured that was a good sign for the quality of the food. We were not disappointed. We ordered an appetizer sampler as we wanted to try a few different things and it was delicious. We had the Indian bread with dipping sauce- also wonderful. The pad Thai was fantastic and definitely enough to share (or take home). We tried the hot tea but found it to be a little sweet and not hot enough. However, the sticky rice with mango for dessert more than made up for it. The place is very casual and the service was ok. We were thrilled to find somewhere without a TV and didn't find the music too loud. Perhaps they have listened to others feedback and adjusted. We will be back! read more

Went in here once with a friend - only three other patrons and they seat us wedged in between them. I ordered the rose drink which was too sweet for consumption (I usually love thai teas and everything with rose in it). Friend ordered massaman curry and i got chicken pad thai with three limes pieces that were clearly old. I didnt eat much and my friend ate half his meal (which honestly smelled kind of off to me) before his stomach started to hurt and I asked for the check. We eat out A LOT and try a bunch of different foods and I've never seen him nauseous like this. Would not try again. read more

I have had the Malaysian curry with duck, Papaya salad, Seafood wan tan hor, Mango and rice, and Fried bananas and green tea ice cream. All had great flavor. The portion for the papaya salad was quite small, but the curry and wan tan hor portions were a good size. The don't give you much rice...not nearly enough to eat with the portion of curry they give you. $3.00 per bowl too! The word "fusion" is usually the red flag of death for most asian eateries, but at Laut, somehow the authentic flavors are preserved for the most part here. Not perfectly, but better than most sacraligious manhattan joints that pass themselves off as whatever cuisine they're posing as. Me and my friends were around union square looking for a place to eat, so we decided to try this place. The atmosphere and design of the place is nice. The waitress was really friendly as well. As for the food, it was decent, nothing exceptional. This place did not leave much of a lasting impression on me. I had the prawn mee dish for .. around $12. It was not worth it. The portions were way too small to be worth $12. I finished the dish quickly, and was not satisfy. I'm sure there are other places with bigger portions and cheaper prices that taste just as good, if not, better. My overall experience here was okay, but if i'm ever around union square, i'll pass on coming here again. read more

While visiting this wonderful city my friend and I happened across this great restaurant. We both ordered variations on the noodle bowl, both of us loved how fresh and tasty it was. I ordered blanket shrimp, really little shrimp wrapped in wonton and fried, but good and I liked the dipping sauce. My friend ordered shrimp shumai and we both thought it was better than average. i was in search of good malaysian/thai food and found Laut's website. pictures of the food looked amazing and went. food i ordered looked nothing like food pictures on the website. it was just average-looking presentation with average taste. Our dinner reservation was at 8:30PM and by 9:20 the check was dropped, without even asking us if we wanted dessert. We sent the check back, ordered dessert and again within minutes the check was dropped. There were still 3 other tables in the restaurant, eating and everyone had a check on the table. I observed the expression on the other patrons faces, where were equally annoyed with their push to get us out of there. Stop being so pushy! at first i was a little skeptical of this place. i thought it would be one of those trendy, overpriced asian restuarants. when my friend chose this restaurant, i wondered why we weren't going to Chinatown for Malaysian. Boy, i'm soooo glad she chose this spot!! Every dish that we ordered was flavorful and great. We did family style, which i am so happy about because i would have just ordered my go-to dish - the drunken noodle, aka the drunk man here at Laut. Funny enough, it didn't make it to my top three choices!!! 1. Roti Canai. $7 vs. $3.50 in chinatown. WORTH THE PREMIUM 2. Curry Laksa. The egg noodles were nommilicious 3. Green Curry.
