Based on my first visit, Les Marais is worth more than it's average three stars. Some of the one star reviews seem to be of some other restaurant. I was there for a business dinner on a Thursday night - maybe 7:00 PM and we were seated immediately without reservations. An hour later the place was full, not a theatre crowd. Our waiter was very good, professional, came back several times to pour our wine. Food came out of the kitchen promptly and did not disappoint. My friends both had the beef medalions. Very nice. I went with the hanger steak - tasted fine but it may have been a different cut. Good fries. Nice side salad. Prices are reasonable. Our entrees were $25 and $26. A decent bottle of Merlot from Chile was a bargain at $28.. I would go back. This restaurant is kosher. But you will not realize it based on the ambiance, food and service. read more

While living in New York for 3 years keeping kosher, this was always my favorite kosher restaurant. After I went treif, and went to other steak houses, I expected to learn that my favorite le Marais was all along slinging mediocre faux-brassarie fare to a pretty captive kosher audience. Well, having now tasted the forbidden, I have to say that for my money Le Marais still does a pretty mean au poive and fries for under $30. This used to be my favorite restaurant. Emphasis on, "used to be". The last two times, I visited Le Marais I have had horrible experiences. The first time, I was served burned steak. When I requested a replacement, I received one, and later the OWNER tried to make me pay for two steaks. It took nearly an hour of arguing to have the burned (black burned!) steak removed from my check. The service left much to wish for, as well. We were neglected most of the night. On Monday night, I returned, eager and excited for a last chance. We were a large party. It started out, with the water bringing us completely different appetizers than the ones we ordered. When we pointed his error out, he refused to take them, but kept insisting that this is what we had ordered. The appetizers he brought were completely different from our order! Then he, he would disappear for long periods at a time. The steaks were not good quality. The quality of the food at this place has decreased exponentially. They used to serve fresh, high quality and great cuts of meat, but this has clearly changed. Our meat smelled weird and definitely was not tasty. For dessert, one of us had called earlier that day and requested the host to prepare a birthday cake. The waiter was notified at the table, discreetly to check with the hostess, on 3 occasions. He never did. We had to reorder the dessert for the birthday girl and our surprise was destroyed. He finally showed up with ONE dessert for 8 people. When we asked him to bring 3 more, it took 20 minutes! Wrong food, neglect, bad attitude and bad food is the quick summary of this joint. I will not return. When sitting down, I was put off by the fact that multiple glasses on the table had traces of red lipstick left on them from previous users. We had them switched out immediately. I had the pepper steak cooked medium and found it absolutely fantastic (side note: I do not keep kosher) the accompanying green salad and french fries made for the perfect companions. However, when dessert came around I was all too disappointed. The lemon tart tasted like lard on a crust, it left a horribly greasy taste in your mouth and lacked lemon flavor. The apple pie came with a hair in the ice cream, which led it to being comped when we later notified the waiter who was very apologetic. i was deterred by this but some of my party preserved on and ate the rest of the pie, and I witnessed them actually bending their metal spoons due to the excessive force needed to cut through the rubbery crust of the pie. Additionally, it took us 20 minutes to get the check and another 20 to wrap up the whole transaction. All in all, it was a mediocre experience. I would recommend this place for the meat to friends who don't mind the hygiene, slow service and skipping dessert. read more

I love this place. It's always crowded, but the service is never less than adequate and I don't have to yell at my date to be heard. I've had a number of steaks with great success, but haven't tried anything that doesn't come from a cow. The duck appetizers are delish, though pricey, while the entrees are surprisingly reasonably priced for the quality, size and kosher status. The desserts are good, but not great. For those on the kosh circuit, I think the quality is on par with Abigael's , and delivers way more bang for the buck than fancy-pants places like Solo. I would recommend making reservations if going for dinner. Don't be surprised if you still have to wait 5-10 minutes, but it's definitely a safer bet than not having reservations. read more

Great place if you want a good kosher steak in a really nice atmosphere. If you go, I recommend making a reservation as this restaurant gets very crowded beginning in the late afternoon and well into the evening. I've always ordered the steak combo served with fries and a side salad, which is consistently delicious, but the portion size has definitely decreased over the years. They serve you French bread with olive oil dip as an appetizer which I did not taste this time around. I also ordered the warm chocolate souffle dessert which is excellent. Service here is decent, but on the slow side. Yes, the price is expensive. But all in all it is well worth it in my humble opinion! read more

One of the oldest surviving kosher steakhouses in Midtown. Never disappoints. A bit noisy and the restaurant phone was put off order with no backup number or email responses so we got a bit nervous about our reservation - especially because the famous marquee was not lit up! - but our anniversary dinner turned out great. The upstairs room has large comfy chairs for the tables, but since there was a loud party upstairs so we decided to sit downstairs. Given the rave reviews for this place, I have to assume that most other Kosher steak houses are not very tasty. Had a business lunch here. Pros: - The water was always quickly filled without asking. - The fries were pretty good. Cons: - When they brought the food out, they switched our plates (I had ordered the 12 oz. steak and my lunch companion had the 16 oz.) - I asked for my steak to be cooked medium rare, and what I got was definitely medium, bordering on medium-well. I did not ask for another one as this was a business lunch, but the texture was off as a result. Such a shame, I think that it would have been a great steak, otherwise. - We did not order the warm chocolate cake with ice cream because of time constraints, but it took them a good 10-15 minutes to come out with the desserts anyway, so we almost might as well have... Overall... The place lost 1.5 stars for the overcooked steak and the delay in bringing out dessert. I came here today for a business lunch. Our group was 11 people and the majority of us ordered steaks. We had gotten there before the rush and placed our order. We watched as everyone around us got their food even though they ordered after us. We checked in with the waiter to see where our food was. He said it was coming. He then came back and told us that our food was coming out. And it was no where in sight. Waited another 10-15 minutes and checked in with the waiter again. Our food came out. 3 people in my party cut into their steaks and they were still RAW!! Considering it took them forever to cook our food, I would have expected it to be over cooked, not RARE. As you read my review, please take into consideration that I don't have any Kosher diet restrictions. My friend, who does eat Kosher, was happier than can be. The three of us all ordered different things, providing a broad view of the menu. Starters: Steak tartare (ordered to share), charcuterie plate, heirloom tomatoes. The tartare was good. Lots of caper and mustard. Good texture; perhaps a bit more finely chopped than I like. The charcuterie had rillettes, salami, what seemed like a dried brisket, and a dry sausage. The last was a spicy dried sausage and was fantastic. The other 3 were just OK. We all ordered different steaks and allowed others to try them. I had the Steak au Poivre, my colleagues the rib eye and the hanger. The waiter warned us that the hanger steak was salty and he was spot on. If I had to eat a whole one I'd be pretty disappointed. The steak au poivre was OK; just a pepper-crusted filet, really. The sauce should have been creamier ... oh never mind. There was nothing special going on with the rib-eye at all. Overall, these we OK uneventful steaks. If you aren't bound to a Kosher diet, take a pass. Maybe pop in and grab some spicy dried sausage from the butcher counter. read more

My family has been coming here for as long as I can remember. I think my earliest memory of coming here was when I was 10. I've always thought this to be a nice place, romantic lighting, dark wood, a very dark steakhouse feel. The hostesses were very nice and sat us immediately. Apparently there is an upstairs seating area (which I didn't know about). And we were surrounded by many other small two top tables. Gave the place an intimate feel. Over to the other side of us were two larger tables which a large family with about 7 kids sat down at. The family seemed to be having a good time and the waiter took great care of them to keep the kids quiet and eating (kept bringing bread, made sure their food came out quickly, etc.). I thought he handled them quite well, which led us to have an enjoyable meal. The boyfriend and I came in to celebrate my 25th. We each ordered an Absolut Fruit drink that was delicious. The bread that came out right after we ordered was warm and delicious. Olive oil is poured for the bread when it first comes out. My only complaint is if you finish the olive oil it's hard to get someone's attention to re-fill it. Aside from that, the bread kept getting re-filled which was nice. The boyfriend ordered the Steak au Poivre which was black pepper-crusted. He likes spicy foods so he thoroughly enjoyed the spice that the crust gave the steak. I ordered the Onglet à l'Echalote which was a hanger steak with a shallot sauce. I could eat this steak once a week. It was delicious. Both of our steaks were perfectly cooked to our requests. Both came with fries (which are amazing) and salad (which has a really nice tangy dressing on it. Our waiter was attentive and easy to find if we needed him for anything. Our food came out quickly and accurately and tasted delicious. We finished our meal with dessert (obviously, it was my birthday celebration) sharing the Fondant de Chocolat et sa Glace Vanille. You know, one of those gooey chocolate cakes with vanilla ice cream. The chocolate cake was hot, the ice cream was cool and melty. It was really delicious. It's a restaurant for a special occasion. If you are looking for delicious food, you found it!!! I know, i sound like an infomercial. I promise I am not. We enjoyed every last bite. We had Carlton, a wonderful waiter who couldn't do enough for us. I liked that all the waiters and bus boys looked out for each other so if Carlton was on the other side of the room and a waitress saw us struggle with the ketchup, she was on it and took care of us asap. LOVED the veal bacon. The steak frites were had was a pretty good value and the veal was so soft. My only reason for not giving it a 5 stars is the food isn't really plated so nicely. If that's important to you, then that with the less than fancy ambiance take away a star. If you are hungry and want a good meal, come here. read more

Poor service and bland food. I went in here for lunch, for the Bastille day, and to my surprise there was no celebrations. As I was in the mood for a French lunch I scoured the menu for a hanger steak with dijon mustard on the side and maybe just some bread and salad - alas they didn't have that, instead I opted for the steak au poivre, cooked rare - and with a Kronenbourg as a drink. I had to go French! At first there was some language barriers with the waiter, as he had never heard about Kronenbourg - neither when using a US pronunciation nor when using a French one. This is essentially the Stella of France - the crappy beer that you expect each and every place to serve. Not knowing about this one was quite a surprise to me. After a 10 minute wait the water returned, and poured the beer into my glass - but regretfully also onto the table. He didn't take notice of that, though 1/3 of the content of the bottle was poured onto my table, nor did he have any regrets - mind you; I had been polite and kind all along. Another 10 minutes later my steak arrived, and while ordered rare it was really a medium rare - with the outer sides being more like well done. Definitely -not- what I would have expected. A bottle of ketchup was hastily put on the table, but with no mayo / mustard, nor did the service consider asking about how the meal was. Slamming a bottle of ketchup onto the table, after the food has been served is just not a polite thing to do. To sum it all up; This is as bad of a spot as they get in Times Sq. -- it's overpriced and service is ridiculously poor. For those of us that works in this neighborhood, this is yet another reason for us to despise the service and quality of food served to us when we go out for lunch. This may beat the local Subway if going out for a theater show at night - but avoid the lines and instead hit Le Rivage half an Ave over, if you are into the old school french mood - or maybe just go with DB Bistro Moderne if you love it a bit more upscale and maybe want a good whiskey after your meal -- both are conveniently close and within the same price range; but with quality as a focus. read more

TOURIST TRAP! My husband and I stopped at this "Close to Restaurant Row" eatery because it was across the street from a play we were seeing. It looked really charming and even had a French Maitre'D! What a Disappointment! We both ordered the Steak Frites, which is a signature dish for any French restaurant. We actually felt sorry for the cow that sacrificed its life for the two dreadful cuts of tasteless "steaks" that were served to us. The French Fries tasted like the fronzen variety you can buy at the grocery store, and the "salade" was a tiny handful of mixed greens and nothing more. The drinks were outrageously expensive as well. When we complained, we were told to 'tell the manager', who conveniently was not available. The waiter apologized, but there was no reduction in the bill and we did not have time to wait for another meal to be prepared as the place was jammed with tourists (we're locals) and the service was backed up. If I could give this place NO STARS, I would. If you're visiting NYC, avoid this RIP OFF RESTAURANT like the plague!!!! read more

This one is not at the address that I remember so if I am reviewing the wrong Le Marais Kosher steak place, I apologize. Maybe they moved? Anyhow, back in "the day" we would have steak business lunches at Le Marais and you could get an EXCELLENT big steak meal here (I'd get a strip steak with spinach or some vegetable on the side) for a great price. I am a big fan of Le Marais I have been eating there monthly for the last 10 years. I had a reservation for the other night and went very hungry. I ordered my usual the ribeye steak and double fries instead of salad. My steak came and it was significantly smaller than the one the person I was with received and I had received double salad instead of fries. I had told the waiter that I didn't order salad and that I wanted fries and he totally ignored me. Again as he walked over I told him as I was already practically done with my steak and had told him again that I did not receive my fries and he said ok and he will bring me fries. 15 minutes later when we were fully finished with our meal my fries still didn't come. I asked the waiter again and he was nasty and said do you still want it? And was not nice he said you're done why would you want them now. It was extremely rude and unprofessional. He never brought me the fries and when he brought the check he even refused to offer us dessert Menus. I am extremely upset and was never treated like this at any restaurant before. read more

But when they sent us upstairs, the person managing the upstairs had given our table of four to a couple. and we stood there for 10 min while 3 more groups were seated till we flagged someone down and asked can please be seated. it took an hour for us to get our food. At no point did the manager apologize we had to remind the waiter 4 times till anyone started making inquiries. The tables on either side of got their food 20 min before we did in fact they were done before we even got our dinner. I ordered a $40 steak. I got a piece smaller than my first and it was room temp. If I wasn't so damn hungry i would have sent it back. I will never go back. I will never recommend this place. The decor is very mellow and welcoming, but the steak is not one of my favourite. For the appetizer I got smoked bacon which had buttery and smokey notes that I found quite pleasant. For the main I got the rib eye that did not really live up to my expectations. The meat was a bit tough and the flavours I found were slightly bland for a steak that costs around 50 dollars. Furthermore, I asked for the steak to be medium rare and they gave me a steak that was bordering on medium to medium well. If you looking for a potent sangria this is not for you Steak: Obviously a must have. We had two on our table. Pepper crusted steak: Delicious, it does have a very strong kick to it however Rib eye: Nice. We got it medium and I had a couple of bites. Good! Fries: To die for, yum. Then again I am a french fry hound. OH did i mention that they have those roundish bottle of heinz ketchup? For some reason, my fries taste even better when ketchup is dished out from that particular bottle. Lamb rib: Appetizer: This was really the bomb. If you like lamb, you must try this, it has the perfect flavor lamb but it was done incredibly so that it broke away easily and melted in my mouth. Coq au vin: Just OK, satisfactory. I wouldnt order this again. It looked way better than it tasted. Dessert: Warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The cake was heavenly ( I guess the 7-10 mins they ask you to allow for it to be prepared is worth it). It is drizzled with loads of chocolate sauce. Must have this one. Overall a decent meal, I dont think I would PICK this place to go to, but I think given the criteria it had to fulfill last night - i.e. hungry people just looking for a place to have a decent meal, it worked very well. Last night, after planning my birthday dinner and making the reservation, we arrived at 10 to 8, looking forward to a lovely dinner as usual. We were told to wait until they were open at eight. There was a large group waiting as well to be seated. When no one walked up to us at 10 after eight we went up again and received our table, initially in the corner near the bus station although the restaurant was empty at that time. Upon request, our table was changed. We were ready to order drinks when they ignored our drink order and told us that they were out of two of the most popular steaks, including the hanger steak. They had just opened. I now realize they were probably saving these meats for the large table that they had. Of course we were very disappointed as this is what we always have. We told the waitress this and discussed the other choices. We ordered I believe it was the turbo and the medallions of beef. I also ordered the roasted potatoes.Our dinner came shortly after, and I received the french fries. I politely told the waitress that I had ordered roasted potato and she told me "you did not" ,made a face,and walked away.She gave me a plate for me to put the french fries on. I thought that was to make room on my plate for the potatoes I ordered. She came back with the roasted potatoes and took the french fries off the table. I do not know what she did with but she took that plate away! I have never seen that happen, even in an inexpensive takeout place. Although we ordered the steaks medium rare, they were dry, with absolutely no juice in them.If you pressed the fork into them, there was no juice at all coming out. At the end of the dinner I told her we were extremely disappointed with the quality of meat and how it tasted, Totally dry and chewy. She said she had to tell her supervisor. She came back and offered us a free dessert which we declined. We were charged full price. 1-the waitress was nasty from the moment we walked in with a big-time attitude. With a nasty response. 2-If the waitress makes a mistake on an order she should not have taken back the fries. Did she put them on someone else's plate? If I knew that I would've not come last night. 4-The meat was dry and not tasty. I have been coming here frequently over the years. The food tonight was as delicious as always (and well worth the price). The service, however, was probably the worst I have encountered in 20'years. Our waiter filled our glasses with water, gave us a minimal amount of olive oil for our bread, took our order (which included a bottle of wine) and never came back. We saw him all over the restaurant waiting on other tables, refilling water,etc, but he never looked in our direction. After sitting for 25 minutes we got a bus boy to get us some more water. Our dinners were served by someone else, but still no wine! I got up from the table and found our waiter. asked him to cancel the bottle of wine and to bring 2 glasses of wine instead. The wine glasses arrived 15 minutes after our meals. For the price of our meal (steaks are well in the $55 range), it was aggravating and disappointing to be served our meal with no interaction from our waiter and no wine. This is not a rant from a wine obsessed diner, but when we eat out we expect our meal to be served completely and to not have to chase our waiter for the basics. My uncle and I go here frequently. The food is delicious and the portion size is very nice. The service can be a little slow and it is usually packed every night, so I'd suggest reservations or getting there early. I'd recommend trying the Chili Marocaine or the pepper steak. read more

Pretty much the standard for a kosher steak in Manhattan. You know you're going to Le Marais when it's that dude's birthday and you want a place that can hold all of you comfortably. The service is incredibly quick, and the star dish is obviously their steak au poivre (black peppercorn). I choose medium and it's so difficult getting anything else on the menu. I actually tried the burger recently, which was pretty solid. Underrated apps are the croquettes and the beef jerky, and their bread is crusty and always fresh. Although it is a solid value for reliable kosher food, the prices seem to have creeped up in recent years. I remember spending around $60/person, but seems I've been paying upwards of $90/person especially when ordering apps and alcohol. Wine prices are inflated, like anywhere else. Also, they won't let you charge more than 4 credit cards, so you better get those Venmo accounts ready. That said, Le Marais is reliable and I recommend it if you're looking to get some great kosher food without going overboard on your bank account. read more

Super Pricey for what you get. The meat is good and you get good quality food, but it certainly is not worth what they charge for it. e.g. $40 a small piece of meat, $100 a pound of beef jerkey ... i believe this is the most expensive Kosher meat i ever experienced. Besides this, the venue has really nothing special to offer, the atmosphere is cold and they put no effort in the decoration/style, once again, in comparison of the price you pay. The staff is nice, nothing special here either. i used to live for years in le Marais (Paris) in the Jewish/Kosher neighborhood, this place did not revive my souvenirs at all. read more
