The line at he original Levains is ridiculously long and if you don't care about the hipster sentiment of going to the original, just go to this one because THE LINES ARE SHORTER. The COOKIES are $4 each, but they're MASSIVE. I got the chocolate walnut and the double chocolate cookie. The last time I had the most perfect cookie with a THIN CRISPY OUTER LAYER and a SOFT GOOEY CENTER was when the cafeteria lady used to bake them for us in the 6th grade. This brought me back and it was so spot on. It was DELICIOUS even after having it for a day or 2 (just reheat it). I don't know how they do it but they've clearly cracked the science to making the perfect cookie and at a massive size. OMG the best walnut Chocolate chip cookie you will ever eat. First of all it is baseball size but somehow it is perfectly cooked. Crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The ingredients are the very best. Even with the pandemic I couldn't stay away. They have a great set up for people who order ahead or stop by the bakery. I visited "before the apex" when Cuomo was begging for 40,000 ventilators. I commend them for being so ahead of the curve with their Covid friendly set up. It meant so much to me to venture out in my car, run inside the bakery and have my order sitting there ready to go. That small treat meant so much after constant shelter in place eating food that you cooked yourself for weeks on end. I could return to my home knowing I was still safe and responsible and I'm happy to report I've never tested positive. I know there is a lot of hype about Levain Bakery. When we relocated to Manhattan, it was one of the first places we tried. We ordered three cookies: chocolate chip walnut, dark chocolate chip, and oatmeal raisin. The cookies are definitely hefty. One thing to note, as well: they are very sweet. With that said, they were tasty, but I wouldn't say they're the best cookie I have ever tried. I do like the almost crunchy exterior with the gooey interior, but they really tasted almost too sweet for me. In any case, I imagine I may try some again someday. read more

The large, fluffy cookies from this bakery should not be missed. The walnut and chocolate chip was amazing. Even though the cookie was at room temperature the chocolate inside was still gooey! I also ordered the onion and Parmesan pizza, which was delicious. The onion was sweet combined with the saltiness from the cheese. The flavor reminded me a lot of French onion soup. The tiny original location seriously had the best cookies in NYC for years, and I occasionally tolerated the crowds to take friends from out of town to try them. Now they have multiple locations, and I was hoping that they would find a way to keep the quality consistent. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Long and disorganized line, rude/weirdly entitled customers who don't know how to operate in crowds (wordlessly smashing into people to cross the room and grab napkins) and...the cookies just aren't what they used to be. Not sure if they changed the recipe or baking process or what, but scaling up production has led to some kind of change. Don't get me wrong, they're fine, they aren't gross. But for $4 a pop and waiting 15 minutes among passive aggressive jerks, they need to be more than fine. I LOVE LEVAIN COOKIES! Honestly there is nothing better than a fresh cookie from there. The past few months I've been given cookies as gifts and I finally got the chance to visit a bakery while in the city. These cookies are super thick and easily weigh a quarter pound and are jammed pack with chips. One cookie is more than enough to even split as it is so rich and sweet. I visited the location on Amsterdam and was a bit disappointed that they didn't have plain chocolate chip cookies in stock, but the double chocolate chip with peanut butter chips was worth every bite. Best cookies ever! Definitely a spot to take visitors from outta town. There are a couple locations on the upper west side on Amsterdam which is great because the line can get long at the first location. Leaving has some great artisan flatbreads as well. My favorite is the olive and goat cheese. It looks like a lot of olives, but it's balanced well with the cheese. Perfect if you love those flavors! My family each got the Chocolate Chip Walnut cookie. They come at 4 dollars a cookie, so a little pricy for the average cookie. However, these cookies are thicccccc! A Levain cookie = 2 regular sized chocolate chip cookies They're packed with chocolate chips and walnuts so that you get a taste of each in every bite. (If you don't like just in cookies, you might not be the biggest fan.) Also, they bake the cookies so that they retain some height like a dough ball if that makes sense. The cookies have a nice golden brown color and crispness on the outside and soft and chewy melty consistency on the inside. I would only have two critiques for this cookie. 1) It might be a touch (a very, very, very small touch) too sweet because I believe there is such an abundance of chocolate chips. Let me be clear, this is a super chocolatey cookie. 2) The fact that I can't come back everyday for these cookies without feeling bad about myself. They are the definition of indulgence. I personally have only tried and only order the Chocoloate Chip Walnut Cookie. Are the other cookies good? Probably, but if you're only going to have one, the chocolate chip walnut is the one to try. At $4 a piece, I'll admit it's a little much for a cookie. But then again, this cookie is massive. For me, it takes about 2-3 sessions to finish it, so it's well worth the price for me. I'm from California, so I may have taken half a dozen of these treats home with me. (Maybe that's why my luggage was a bit heavy going home.) Even better when you heat them up a little bit. This review/story only makes sense if you assume the premise that these cookies are famous and supposedly some of the best chocolate chip cookies that have ever been concocted. So I heard that this location was not as crowded as the other one, and sure enough, I showed up at 8:30 am on a Sunday morning and I was able to walk right up and order. I wanted to take some cookies home and freeze them, as well as get a few breakfast items too. The cinnamon brioche was ok, but a little dense in my opinion. The chocolate chip brioche was a bit tastier and had a really nice thick layer of chocolate in the middle. The blueberry muffin had a large, crisp top. The coffee cake was as expected. Well I ordered 15 cookies to also bring back to Tennessee with me. These cookies are known for being huge. But I didn't realize just how huge they are. They are really BIG AND HEAVY. I took a few bites of one, and it was crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and the chocolate was melty while the dough was soft but not undercooked. I started back to the subway with my 2 boxes of sweets, and immediately began regretting that I bought so much. I'm not kidding, I think the bag weighed 6 or 7 pounds, maybe more. And we still had to check out of the hotel, and walk around High Line and Chelsea Market while lugging this large and heavy bag around. The plane wasn't to leave for 6 hours and we had lots of time to kill. The twine handle of the bag was starting to dig into my fingers at this point. I begin wondering if I should ditch some of this food somewhere. Later, I realized that it was better to carry the bag on my forearms. But then it was making all sorts of marks up and down my forearms, and I started wondering if someone was going to think I'm doing drugs. I eventually clipped it to my back pack after we checked out of the hotel, but even that was awkward, with the bag swinging against my leg. With all the different ways that I'm holding this bag, it was getting worn and little holes were popping up. I kid you not, as I walk into the front door of my house, the bag finally rips and I barely catch the boxes as they fall out. I'm happy to say that the food (barely) survived the trip back to Tennessee. And now I have a freezer full of cookies to enjoy for a while. Soooo good. Every time I come to New York, I buy their cookies, and some other paastries. I've tried their sticky buns. They're good but I prefer the cookies. My favorite is the original chocolate chip walnut. There's a gluten free version too but it's not as good. It's less gewy, and perhaps a bit more sweet. It's the only gluten free version they make and it's made and baked in the same kitchen as gluten cookies and bread (just fyi). The staff is really nice. When there's a huge line at the other location, I come here cause it's usually quicker. Too bad they're so expensive, although it's probably for the best given how rich they are. I couldn't eat them everyday. I recommend the chocolate chocolate cookie too which is gewy too. They are a bit too sweet for me, but from time to time, they are delicious. The amount of calories is nothing to scoff at, and eating one everyday may brought you closer to heart attacks and diabetes, but in moderation they are great to cheer you up. For me, waiting on line for cookies is already a bit much. Levain has big, luscious cookies, for sure. Sampling both an oatmeal raisin and a double chocolate ($4 each), my thoughts are that the cookies are good, thick, indulgent, but frankly too rich and chewy for my taste. For most this is a gourmet treat, but to me they are slightly underdone. Regardless, I do recommend Levain as the products are super fresh, the employees are patient and professional, and most customers are huge fans. Whoa no long line at Levain?! Am I in the right neighborhood?! Anyways Levain opened up a bigger store about an avenue away from the museum of natural science on Amsterdam. This store is big enough, that the menu includes more items such as pizza and I feel less guilty about ordering a drink since there isn't a huge line for cookies. Also they have seating inside!! Great cookies! Still same great taste just bigger location and wow the chocolate banana bread is so good too!! Prior to coming, I questioned how a cookie can be so much better than all other cookies, but the chocolate chip walnut one was beyond what I could ever imagine. It is perfect in sweetness level and texture (both crispy and soft). I was told by one of the employees that the cookies last up to 1 week when kept in the refrigerator, so I was able to bring back a lot for people as souvenirs. Of course, I ended up eating some of them, and they tasted just as good even after a week.
