First time at Malaya and I love the very outdoor concept! Order at the counter and there's a covered outdoor space to chill, even with outlets around if you want to work there. The staff were very friendly and the mural by the counter is beautiful. For APIHM, they were running some specials in May that I tried: + Adobo Bowl - A pretty simple dish where the price seemed a little steep. The meat was seasoned well, sauce was thick and sweet, but the overall bowl ratio with overwhelmed with white rice. I think it was missing like pickled veggies or something too to complete the dish. + Pandan Matcha - a sweet drink where the pandan flavor shined through more than the matcha. Other menu items we tried: + Lumpia crispy sando: Solid sando, but needs to be eaten right away. The fried wonton sheets that lumpia is made with in hindsight would give a good crunch but I think one sheet is not enough in comparison to the whole sandwich. Maybe test multiple layers (or a thicker wonton sheet). I also think it needs a dipping sauce. + Ensaymada - queso: Favorite thing I tried! The Ensaymada was soft and pillowy and the mixture of cheese gave it was really nice sweet and savory combo. Would love to come back for this! read more

Ohhh my goodness... This place single-handedly started my coffee addiction because their ube coffee is sooo good. I've been coming here since their Soft Opening in April, and I can't say enough how friendly the staff is and how consistent the quality of the drinks and the food are here. My personal favorites are the ube coffee, pandan matcha, and spam sando. There's a tv that they now use for watch parties, and food is now served at 9 am!! I usually stop here before work and can now get food before my shift which is awesome :) Also, I'm Filipino and have always wanted to try their original Silverlake location. When we arrived we realized the previous restaurant in the location that sold amazing katsu was gone, but Malaya is a fantastic replacement. We got the Malaya Signature and the Ube Creme. They were so pretty when they came out and were super delicious, not too sweet! I actually enjoyed the Malaya Signature even more than the Ube - but both were good. For snacks, we got the Lumpia and the salted egg Ensaymadas. The lumpia were crispy and delicious - pork based I believe. The ensaymada was like nothing we'd had before - salty, sweet, savory. A great flavor combo. My partner didn't love it but I found it delightful. The service was extremely friendly, but it took a bit to come out. I think they made everything fresh. The drinks were quick tho! I continue to love that location. The open air with the sonic parking lot vibe is really nice, especially on a hot but breezy day. #188 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. Malaya is a little walk-up filipino coffeeshop that recently opened in Arcadia. The outdoor café is set up as a concession window with a service counter and a protective awning overhead; there's also a covered patio to the side with some chairs, stools, and wooden countertops attached to the brick wall enclosure, and they even installed some outlets and purse hooks along the enclosure. I actually really like the laid-back setup - it's a fun place to relax in good weather. I ordered the signature Malaya latte. The drink itself was pretty small - definitely smaller than the standard sizes typically used at other coffeshops. That being said, the latte sounded interesting enough, like a Spanish latte but with brown sugar added. Overall, the drink was decent. It didn't amaze me or leave me with an unforgettable impression, but I liked it enough to finish it and it got the job done in satisfying my caffeine addiction. Honestly I regret not trying one of the more prominently filipino drinks like their ube or pandan lattes, which look pretty great in all the photos. There's always next time though. Service was superb. The owner (or supervisor maybe) was welcoming as he took my order, and I appreciated his cheerful and friendly disposition. Stopped by during their opening weekend to check out this new coffee spot. This location has had several businesses come and go in the past few years, so hoping this one sticks. Definitely a more unique business in the area as we don't have too many, if any, Filipino inspired restaurants. Malaya has a storefront in Silverlake already, but seems like they are heading over to the SGV. This place is more of a grab and go, outdoor eatery spot. Order at the window and either sit outdoors under the awning or take it with you to-go. Parking is pretty easy as there's a small lot and ample street parking. Ordered 3 drinks: Malaya signature $7.50, caramel banana $7.50, and a matcha latte with a cream top $7.50 + $1. Out of the three, I liked only one. The Malaya signature was the best tasting to me. Espresso was strong and flavorful, but I liked the added hints of cinnamon and brown sugar to really elevate the drink. The cream top was pretty minimal though. The caramel banana - I think I'm just not a banana fan for my drinks. The espresso was good but the banana syrup kind of killed it for me. But this was just a flavor preference. The matcha latte though - I was told they don't do any sweeteners to the matcha, but the cream top would give it some sweetness. But I did see some other people say they were able to adjust for sugar, but I wasn't given that option. So the matcha was really strong but tasted like grass. Cream top could have been thicker, too. Drinks are not badly priced, but the cups are pretty small, so even less ice - I felt like the cups had a lot of ice inside. They also offer pastries and food but I think the pasties are not from another vendor. I got the cheese ensaymada for $6.50. They heated it up so the cheese was nicely melted when I started eating. The topping of the cheese was great! But the pastry itself was super dry. The staff were all fairly nice. Really like the mural as well. Found this place on tik tok, tried their banana latte and from all the other banana lattes I've tried, this was not on the sweet side. The espresso did have a certain type of after taste that did over power the banana flavor. The cold foam definitely added some taste but if it had not had it, it would not be as good. I'll preface this by saying I might critique a little harder since I'm Filipino myself, so take that for what it's worth. I ordered the Malaya Signature drink and the Malaya Chicken Bowl. The drinks lean pretty sweet, which I knew going in, but if you're watching your sugar intake this probably isn't your spot. That said, the espresso flavor actually holds its own despite everything going on in the drink, so points for that. The chicken bowl was just okay for me. It listed patis (fish sauce) as an ingredient so I was expecting something more savory, but it skewed sweet. They added pickled cabbage, which was fine, but I really think atchara would've worked so much better. For non-Filipinos, atchara is a tangy pickled green papaya condiment common in Filipino cooking. That brightness would've cut through the sweetness and complemented the chicken way more. The lumpia was a bit of a letdown. Pretty small, and it didn't really hit like traditional Filipino lumpia does. No sweet and sour sauce on the side either, which feels like a miss. On the plus side, parking is a breeze. The Malaya signature was also just okay. The pandan matcha was actually good at first. It's slightly sweet with a nice balance of matcha and pandan, however it turned pretty bitter after sitting out. The banana matcha was the most disappointing. It tasted watery, like banana water with a hint of matcha. Customer service was great and the staff were friendly. There's a spacious parking lot, which is a plus, but outdoor seating is limited. A big downside was that the straws were terrible. Mine was so bent I literally couldn't sip from it. I really wanted to love this place and support my fellow kapabayan... but after today's experience, I'm severely disappointed. Firstly, as noted in other reviews, it does seem to take awhile, either to have your order taken and definitely to get your order. Secondly, it's as if they don't really know what food they have for the day. Does someone not have inventory of what they get everyone morning? I came at 8am from DTLA, so it was a little bit of a drive. When I got there I asked for a dozen and also 2 of the Ensaymada banana caramel flavor. After waiting for awhile, (for already pre-made pastries btw) I was told they actually didn't have that flavor of ensaymada, which is fine, I was able to replace with 2 ube bibinkas. I was running a bunch of errands and trust that my order was correct as the guy was writing what the empanadas were on the box... but to my surprise, when I got home, I only received 8/12 empanadas. Before I even paid, probably expecting it would take awhile because there was only 2 of them working, I still tipped $10. So I paid about $75 after all that. I was actually quite ok with having to wait as I could understand with there only being two of them working, and with people coming in back to back, they might have been overwhelmed, but to come home only to find out I was shorted, is so disappointing and short sighted. I guess maybe I should have double checked, but maybe I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt that everything should be in order. As I don't live relatively close, I was not about to drive nearly 1 hr round trip just to get my 4 empanadas that are probably sold out by now. read more

The lumpia that came with it was dinky, and didn't have that lumpia crunch to it, it was very mushy. The breakfast sando was better. Had great flavor, had a kick to it. The breading was dry though, could use some more sauce to it. The other coffee drinks my partner had and said it was pretty good. Parking is good, has a decent lot with street parking also. The flan flavor really comes through, and the sandwich is surprisingly addicting despite the price. My only minor gripes: I wish the Spam was sliced a bit thicker and had more sauce. As we walked to the register, the first thing I noticed was that they're giving 10% off for those working in the fire department, hospitals, school districts (there's a sign up where you order). As a school district employee I was able to get this nice gesture of a discount. We got 4 items to our order. The strawberry matcha, the malaya signature, and the ube churro. The strawberry matcha was delicious as it is in between of it being earthy and milky. I will most definitely come back for their matcha. We also got the malaya signature in which it is a bit strong but the cream top compliments it but it's still delicious. The ube churros were good too. It's a cool new spot worth trying. Staff were extremely nice as they answered all my questions and also provided some recommendations. Service was fast and it didn't take long at all to get our stuff.
