First time I ordered here was for a pick up order. Their online menu is pretty fancy looking so when I went to pick up I was also expecting a fancy restaurant. I was pretty surprised when I got there and found a simple restaurant that reminded me more of a hole in the wall type place. Then I tasted their food and thought to myself this is easily the best pasta I have had in a really long time. One of the yelpers stated this place is a hidden gem and that couldn't be more true. It's located at the tail end of a residential street and when I went in I only saw street parking (didn't notice any signs for alley parking it a private parking lot but I could be wrong). I've come back to eat here many times since that first time and will continue to do so. The crab cakes are really tasty and they don't skimp on the crab meat. The Melrose pasta is really rich and garlicky in flavor - it's pretty much a garlic Alfredo, delicious! For a lighter Alfredo sauce minus the strong garlic flavor, I tried the fettuccini Milano with crab and shrimp - this was good but made me miss the strong flavors of the Melrose pasta. The jambalaya tastes more like spicy spaghetti which I wasn't expecting but really enjoyed. So far I haven't ordered a dish from here that I was disappointed with. I've lived and worked in East Hollywood my whole life and Melrose Cafe is one of the best restaurants in town. I don't know where to start. So far I've had 5 different items and each was as delicious as the other. I love paninis but I also love salads, but I usually have to pick one or the other due to the cost, however Melrose Cafe allows a side salad with the panini to balance out the meal perfectly. Let me preface this by saying I eat at Melrose at least twice a week. It's within walking distance of my work. The food is fantastic! I have yet to eat something I didn't love from the menu. I highly recommend the Chicken Milanese, the NY steak, their salads, and their soup, the chicken wings, and their breadsticks. All their fried items are crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. I don't usually order chicken breast since it's almost always too dry. But somehow their chicken dishes are all tender and moist. The food is just full of flavors. I'm sure there are tons of butter used in everything, and I'm not complaining. That being said, there is a few things I wish could be better. During lunch, they are super busy, with all the neighboring hospital workers, it's packed and the wait is about 30-45 minutes to get the food. For take out, or even eat there, calling in advance is a must. The space is very small, with only about 4-5 tables inside and 2 outside. They can stand to hire one extra person. There are times when I would call and no one would pick up and I'd be forced to go somewhere else for my lunch. Also half the time they forget to give me breadsticks. I'm not sure if my meal is supposed to get breadsticks but I get it half the time. I hope in the future they expand their space and menu. read more

Only tried once on a whim, but I look forward to trying it again. Ordered the ever popular ahi tuna salad, a calzone, and a large T-Rex pizza. My boyfriend said he really liked the salad, but he only finished half of it and never finished the rest--yep, I ended up throwing half of that expensive salad away. So, I think maybe it was not as great as he claimed or it would not have been as fresh past 1 day. The calzone was pretty delish. I love calzones. Always have--since my elementary school days. This one was dough-licious and huge. The ratio of filling to dough was off, as I prefer some parity or more fillings than dough. However, not embodying a perfect calzone, I enjoyed this take on a calzone and would order again in the future. The pizza is the main reason I cannot give a 4* rating. I could tell that the toppings were cheap, which made the whole pizza very mediocre. Naturally, most places in the food industry get the cheapest goods possible, but in no shape or form should I be able to discern such cheap quality. Unfortunately, the meat thrown on this pizza was awful. The crust was also not great. I prefer the crust at several (obvious) pizza chains. That said, I think I might try another pizza. Maybe a chicken pizza or a simple pepperoni. read more

It seems like a generic diner from the outside, but the food quality says otherwise. I'd go out on a limb and say they served me one of the best burgers I've ever had. A few friends of mine and I walked here during our lunch break to celebrate my today today. I was surprised to see how small and casual it was inside, especially after looking at the menu before coming in. Our food didn't take very long at all to arrive, and it was all sooooo good. Every one of us was completely satisfied. Portions are HUGE too, so be aware that you probably won't eat your whole meal. They bring delicious garlic bread in baskets for the table. I ordered cheese ravioli which was amazing. I also got a slice of cheesecake to go since it was my birthday. Nothing special there, but it was cheesecake, so of course it was incredibly tasty. Service speed was decent. The slowest part was paying, because they have a pretty aged card reader that didn't go the fastest, but we didn't really mind. We ordered delivery from here and loved it! I had the turkey panini ($9) and it was gigantic. It came with a side of your choice (fresh fruit). There was lots of turkey and the sandwich was bursting at the seams with ingredients. The bread was a little on the burnt side but still ok. Don't ever order delivery here...the restaurant completely destroyed my order. I placed order thru Eat24 app, and after waiting almost 2 hours, the restaurant canceled the door and claimed they never received it. That's BS because when I asked for an update on the ETA, they responded saying the order was en route to my house. I'm sick and bedridden, so now I have to starve.
