I personally do not like mixed salad greens but that didn't stop me from ordering a flavorful salad filled with nutritious and tasty fillings like apples, Brussels sprouts, yams and Parmesan cheese. Expect a hefty line at lunch time, but don't despair as the line moves at a rapid rate. You can build your own salad or choose one of their customs mixes. I went with the Parker and subbed mixed greens for baby spinach. Want light dressing? No problem. They are happy to accommodate any requests. My only suggestion is subbing those bland mixed greens for one of the more interesting options like spinach, kale or butter lettuce. I had a dream recently where I woke with the ominous feeling that plants would one day war with us. Imagine the future, residing in an enclosure of living plant life infused with technology. It lives and breathes and adapts, but still doesn't care if you poo or masturbate because, let's face it, plants drop more seed than a teenage geek who just discovered porn. Anyway, given enough technological prowess, I think it's inevitable that plants will eventually find a way to reclaim this planet... Mixt Greens uses sustainable and organic produce with an emphasis on local farm purchases. It's my favorite downtown lunch spot. With a nod to the organic and sustainable, these folks offer an efficient, cafeteria-style alternative to the FiDi lunch scene. I told myself yesterday that this was the absolute last time I was coming here. I lied to myself because I had lunch here again today. Why do I keep coming back? I love salads with tasty meats such as grilled chicken and seared tuna. Love the freshness of the the produce. I enjoy the outdoor seating where you can sit in the grass or at the plentiful tables. Or you have the option to take it back to the office, which I regretfully do often. Plus they serve environmentally responsible fine food. And, oh my, it is fine. I am a salad FREAK. I'm also an ice cream freak, and a champagne freak, so the salad helps tip the diabetes/ liver disease scale a bit. Very convenient. So, obviously I love Mixt Greens! It's the Candyland of salad joints. They make just the kind of salads I would make for myself: huge, packed with interesting ingredients, lightly dressed, super flavorful and unboring. The prices range from 8.95 - 10.95, but the sticker shock goes away once you see them tossing up a gigantic bowl of greens and packing it into a extra-large take away container for you. A virtuous investment, for sure. There always seems to be a line at lunch time, but it moves fast and you gotta be ready when you get to the counter. There are about 8 pre-designed salads to choose from, one special seasonal salad, and a build-your-own option. There must be 40+ ingredients, all made fresh daily. You watch them assemble your salad while you wait, and the friendly staff will chat with you merrily while they work. Clearly, salads are good for your emotional health. The new Mixt Greens in the yelporhood is now open! Hooray - now I don't have to trek over to the FiDi for one of their eco-gourmet salads. Plus it's located next to my favorite bamboo terrace, so I'll be having lunch out there on warm days. The line was out the door, but they've already got their system down pat. They use ingredients that are organic and locally grown, and you can either choose one of their signature items or design your own salad. I ordered their "Fusion" salad (mixt greens, pea shoots, fresh herbs, coriander-encrusted seared ahi tuna, red pepper, edamame, cucumber, soba noodles, sesame soy vinaigrette - $10.95) and a "Parma" sandwich (prosciutto di parma, coppa ham, burrata cheese, roasted red peppers, herb oil, balsamic reduction, on an acme bread torpedo roll - $8.95) for a friend and sat at one of their cool eco-chic tables inside within 15 mins. Their windows are stenciled with their tagline "Environmentally responsible fine food," tables are labeled "made from recycled detergent bottles," and trash station is labeled "Trash," "Recycle" and "Compost" with handy pictures (I always get my trash, recycle and compost mixt up). I love that their take out containers are made of corn so they compost them as well. Ran into several yelpers who decided to eat green today too, so I'm sure this will be a hot lunch spot for many! read more

Don't tell anyone else, but the last time I was at a Mixt Greens [one of the Sansome locations], there was a nice big crunchy bug in my salad. YUM - protein! I ate around it. For $10+, it would have been such a waste. I didn't find anything of the sort when I decided to try out this new location the other day. There were still lines, but they moved quickly. A little bit of seating on the inside, lots of seating on the outside. A healthy $10+ salad and some Vitamin D. I was hungry a few hours later, but at least it was filling and healthy upon consumption. Normally, I ask for dressing on the side. I don't like my salads soggy or too flavorful. However, I didn't ask for the dressing on the side this one time and found the "Fusion" to be fresh, but a little bland. Will be back to try the "Maui." Mixt Greens was out of mixed greens. Because when the weather gets hot, the hot get salads. Luckily the manager kept his cool. He apologized, told us late lunchers that more greens were on the way, and that lunch was on him. Classy! I've never had a bad salad here. My fave is the Siam Salad with tofu but this time, I got the Madison. Organic greens, grilled chicken, asparagus, grated parmesan, and sunflower seeds - yes please! They were out of the truffle potatoes so instead I asked for tomatoes and they thoughtfully offered to add some truffle oil. All in a compostable container. Now THAT'S hot. read more

I have a bit of an aversion to salads in general, but Mixt Greens is the exception to the rule. Perhaps it's because I lack the culinary artistry to curate anything palatable on my own, but when it comes to settling on eating leafy greens for lunch or dinner, I'd generally rather eat a roof shingle than a plate filled with arugula and croutons. It's just the way I've always been, but if it were possible to whip up creations like the ones offered daily at Mixt Greens, it'd be a completely different story. The options for what you'll have on your salad are limitless, so whether you like your greens laced with meat or you're looking for some lighter fare, you're sure to find the sweet spot your mouth desires. They make it easy to order with a handful of tasty combinations at the ready (my go-to being the Siam), but if you feel like building your meal from scratch, that's cool too. Just have your ingredients top of mind from the second you reach the counter, as this place is beyond crazy at lunch and the staff has little patience for indecisiveness. They seem to run out of various items fairly often, so your best bet is to get there right when they open to ensure you'll get exactly what you desire. Try not to get caught between the 11:30 - 12:30 lunch rush, though. The queues get so long, it's almost mind blowing! If you're impatient around that time, you can also take advantage of the pre-made salads sitting in the fridge, but they're sold as-is. If you want any additions/subtractions, you're out of luck, friendo. It's also noteworthy to mention that this place is pretty darn expensive, but if you're wiling to shell out hundreds of dollars for weekend drinks at a bar or a spiffy new wardrobe, you owe your body the opportunity to consume a healthy, balanced, and organic meal around lunchtime. Hell. Yes. Think Chipotle but actually GOOD. And healthy to boot! It's a bit crowded (which is a good sign) but once you're up to the front of the line you can ask to have a salad on the menu made fresh to order or you can create your own. There is a team of people behind a big clean glass partition and for each customer they grab a big bowl, select your choice of lettuce and various other ingredients, then mix up a fabulous lunch right before your eyes. I especially liked being consulted on how much dressed was just right. Not too much, thanks! I opted for a salad off the menu that included mango and seared ahi tuna. For those seeking massive portions of crudités, Mixt Greens is probably your best bet. First off, this place is a popular lunch spot. It's not too uncommon for the line to be 20-30 deep around peak lunchtime. However, each of able-handed staff members can throw together a tasty salad in the blink of an eye. It's actually kind of comical watching them whip salads together in those huge bowls with shrapnel flying every which way. Who cares. I think it makes it taste better. There are plenty of prearranged salad choices, too. Several options like the Maui or the Hatch. I went with a kind of make-your-own with seared tuna, kale and spinach, tons of other additional veg, vinaigrette, and bread on the side. The salads are rather formidable. Greens have never looked and tasted so good. Fresh, made-to-order and fast, fast, fast... the Mixt Greens cats have line expedition down. However, such efficiency comes at a price and that may mean that you're rushed through the ordering process a bit, or don't find yourself on the receiving end of a high-wattage smile. I'm okay with that if it translates to a quick and painless transaction... after all, I'm usually toting my salad back to the office. But all of my experiences at Mixt Greens have been pleasant, and even excellent at times. Take, for instance, when I showed up at high noon with 14 custom orders for a room of famished colleagues. The folks at Mixt Greens were pros - no snark, just one huge perfectly-executed order in a matter of minutes. Service aside, it really comes down to the salad and Mixt Greens delivers a healthy lunch that makes me look forward to filling up on an energy-enhancing meal of cool greens, crispy veggies, tasty protein and housemade dressing. The Muppets. An American Classic show by Jim Henson. His beloved characters please audiences across generations, inducing smiles and laughter to all those who have been touched by his puppeteering skills. One character that has always appealed to the foodie in me is the Swedish Chef. For an explanation for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, Wikipedia states--- "A parody of television chefs, the Swedish Chef wears a toque blanche and has bushy eyebrows that completely obscure his eyes. Nearly all Swedish Chef sketches begin with him in a kitchen, waving some utensils while singing his signature song in his typical mock Swedish - a semi-comprehensible gibberish mimicking Swedish phonology and prosody. The song's lyrics vary slightly from one episode to the next, but always end with "Börk, börk, börk!" as the Chef throws the utensils aside with a clatter that seems to startle him." Anecdote aside, my point is the salad chefs at Mixt Greens remind me a lot of the Swedish Chef, flinging around ingredients in a chaotic ballet of veggies and protein. Miraculously culminating in tasty salads at lightening speed. The line is long but moves as efficiently as possible, providing quality salads to a veggie hungry FiDi crowd. Competitively priced for the quality/quantity, this place is definitely worth a visit or two. Only problem, there are salad bars ALL over FiDi and I tend to be just a tiny bit too lazy to walk the extra 4 Mission Blocks to go to Mixt Greens instead of perfectly fine salad bars 1-2 blocks away. I am a huge fan of things I can build myself. (Legos were one of my favorite childhood toys in fact.) I'm also a huge fan of seasonally fresh ingredients. And therefore, it stands to reason that I would be a huge fan of Mixt Greens. When you walk in and see the wall of lettuce and the buffet of ingredients it's like a magical salad wonderland. Chickpeas, tofu, and bell peppers? Okay! Steak, blue cheese, and bacon? You got it! Whatever your little salad-creating heart desires they most likely have it. That is quite nice. You can create your own concoction or go with one of their tried and true menu creations. You can also get your salad put into a wrap to create a sort of sandwich-salad (a saldwich? Sandad?). There is an option to order ahead which is nice, but the line generally moves fairly quick. And I have to give Mixt Greens bonus points for carrying Kombucha - it's my new favorite obsession. read more

Mixt Greens is both popular and good with good reason. They are of course eco-friendly and greener than thou, and I actually thought for what you get the prices were mostly fine. If I were in the city more often I'd likely not eat here every day, but then again I can't really say that I'd eat much of anywhere every day. In theory, it's good. A nice, big ass salad whipped up assembly line style from fresh ingredients. The opportunity for a healthy lunch in The City, and it's not too expensive. The offerings are pretty inventive and gourmet. More exciting than your average Caesar, and generally more substantial. They offer a their salads in sando and wrap form too. It's obviously a popular place, as the line snakes around out the door and down the walk. I ordered the salad with, uh, well, it had some truffled potatoes. That's all I remember because that's all I could taste. I was appreciating the fact that I was eating something fresh, green, and at least somewhat healthy for lunch (as opposed to a burrito or crazy-ass 5-meat super torta from Troopisueño), but all I could taste was truffle. I felt like I was gnawing on a big, pungent, heady ground nugget. It was so intense I almost couldn't finish it. It was overpowering. That aside, I love the idea, the execution seems quick and precise, and I'm guessing from the line that the other salads are much more palatable than my basket of intensity. Man, I always opt for Mixt Greens when someone at my "home-away-from-home office" asks the inevitable question "where should we go for lunch" and I think to myself 1. fast-ish, 2. not fast food, 3. somewhat healthy and 4. convenient...Mixt Greens gets a star for each. My favorite is the Cowboy. I get it every time. I don't care that it's repetitive as I'm only here a few times a year, and it's going to be exactly what I like. It's not like, REALLY healthy or anything, but its filling and has some vegetables and I'm not screaming for food by 5pm. The lines are usually pretty frightening looking during lunch rush, but they move fast so don't fret. They're efficient and pretty friendly for the most part. The most important thing is that the mix your ish up fresh and have it to you within moments it seems. It's fairly pricey for salads (think $10 range for a takeout salad), but this is SOMA and you get what you pay for. Everything is legit...ingredients, style, workers, etc. Top it with a fresh juice or smart water and you're good to power through the rest of your day. I enjoy taking it back to Yerba Buena to sit in the grass, I've never eaten in as it always seems a little frenetic. The concept isn't mind-blowing, and if you live in NYC, you've got these joints in the corner deli. Still, a "create your own salad and get it tossed" spot can still shine with a wild selection of toppings and tasty dressings. This is what Mixt does quite nicely. Yes, some of the salads are close to $10, but the create your own options are $6 and change. You can get a nice leafy bit with that. My not-to-be-missed options are the avocado (for some reason it is especially delicious) and the jalapeno-cilantro vinaigrette. There are also a handful of sandwiches and some pre-made grab and go salads if you're in a rush. If you go at the top of lunch hour, expect to wait in a long line. This is a decent salad/sandwich spot. It's a little bit pricey for the portion sizes you receive, but the quality is solid. Because of it's location inside the city's financial district, this is mainly a grab & go spot that gets especially busy during lunch. There are some spots for seating outside. I'm personally more partial to their sandwiches than their salads, as it's a much better value for your money and you'll definitely be full after one of their sandwiches. There are a lot of salad places in the neighborhood, and this wouldn't be my first choice or recommendation, but if you're in need of something quick, this is a solid option. read more

Ok - I really hate to give businesses a one or two star review because I am a business owner and one star reviews tend to sting and are often unwarranted. I am making a well deserved exception for this establishment however, because I got sick as a dog after eating a Caesar salad for lunch yesterday at this Mixt Greens. I rate the salad as two stars because it just was a lousy salad - the lettuce was almost shredded like taco lettuce and the anchovies were mushy and fishy tasting in a bad way (perhaps the source of food poisoning?). It's now 4am and I can't sleep because I have all the symptoms of Campylobacter found on www.emedicinehealth.com: Campylobacter: Causes mild illness with fever, watery diarrhea, headache, and muscle aches. Campylobacter is the most commonly identified food-borne bacterial infection encountered in the world. It is transmitted by raw poultry, raw milk, and water contaminated by animal feces. Bottom line: I spent $8.95 on a lousy tasting salad that I barely ate half of and I've been really sick for the past 12 hours. Arghhh! read more

My mom would kill me if she found out I spend $10+ on salads for lunch instead of making and bringing my own. Today I went over the edge and spent $14 on the Fusion w/ marinated tofu and added the Moroccan grilled tuna (instead of the seared ahi which is a little more expensive). The tofu is really flavorful and hearty so extra protein wasn't really necessary. Make sure to get the dressing on the side or ask for light since they drench it if you don't specify. I actually prefer the dressing from Seller's Market's ahi salad, but the Fusion is more filling w/ edamame and soba noodles. I also love their Cobb (they're generous with the applewood smoked bacon) which I usually get handheld wrapped in lavash. There's a different salad to satisfy everyone. I love the name of the Bachelor... steak and potatoes in a salad! The salads are HUGE, so if I were really being conservative I'd share w/ a friend or make it 2 meals. But Mixt is worth the occasional splurge. I also love that they're so over-the-top green. All their "plastics" are made of corn and the wood decor is recycled. I just started pseudo-composting at home and I'm pretty obsessed (it's very easy to compost in SF http://www.sunsetscavenger.com/residential/composting.php?t=r). Wow is this place popular! I mean, really, really popular! The queue at 12:30 was out the door, then wrapped around in the store. They had a ton of staff, so the line did move quickly. Make sure you know exactly what you want from the menu board above the line so that when you are up, you don't hesitate. I had the Orchard salad: baby kale, grilled chicken, sliced apple, cheddar cheese, avocado, bacon, toasted almonds, balsamic vinaigrette. I really like that they allow you to do one substitution too. I totally subbed in beets! Yum! The ingredients are all super fresh and very high quality. The cheddar in my salad was divine! The other salads on the menu all looked wonderful as well, and you can build your own salad as well. For the menu item salads there were 2 vegetarian salads and a vegan, and the proteins ranged from chicken, flank steak, pork lion and coriander-crusted seared ahi tuna!! I'm really reaching back into my memory for details here, but I didn't want to skip out on giving Mixt Greens a shout for the fresh and delish meal I enjoyed during a working lunch the last time I was in San Francisco. Had I been dining in, I probably would have opted for a salad, but since the meeting involved me standing in front of a room and talking, I went the safer route and opted for a sandwich (no greens in my teeth, thanks!). "The farmer" included fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, very thinly sliced portabella mushrooms (which I typically hate, though these were somehow just right), aioli, arugula and balsamic reduction. I like toppings. Hearts of palm, jicama, seared ahi tuna, full-on anchovies...you name it. This place might as well be named, Frances' favorite things (in the Sound of Music melody of course). Okay - the line might have reached the 'too long' mark for most people's standards, but it seemed to have gone fairly fast since I had enjoyable company keeping me occupied. The establishment is very much a lunch destination where you have the option of building your own dream salad, choosing a set salad recipe, or choosing a just straight-up sandwich. Considering my love for toppings - one would think I'd go the 'build-your-salad' route but realized their Maui option offered the ingredients I am keen to: jicama, ahi tuna, avocado, mango, lemon vinaigrette. If the set- options weren't so superb and totally reflective of what people like in salad, I would have gone straight to the 'normal' Caesar salad. I have to knock them down. This is the second time in 2 months that I've found stuff in my "freshly made" salad. The first time, I found a sticker. I caught it the moment that the salad maker closed the salad. I told her to pop the container open and I pointed out the sticker. She grabbed it and goes "Oh, you can talk to my service manager." WHAT? You mean, no "sorry!" Or "Oh, would you like me to remake the salad?". OK fine - maybe the sticker was accidentally stuck on an avocado or something. But that's the problem. The details. I like this location better than the downtown one, as it's less manic. However, I'm still salad-impaired. I can't seem to figure out how to order a salad bar salad assembled by someone else. Once you get past the unspeakable horror of paying over $10 for a takeout salad, Mixt Greens is great. OK, so the price isn't exactly horrifying, but you would think it was based on the reaction of every single person when they come here for the first time. This has become such a lunchtime staple that when they moved the old, familiar staff over to a new location that was just opening and replaced them with new people, I felt betrayed and considered taking my salad dollars to Working Girls or The Grove. And while things were a little rocky for a few weeks, the staff is back up to their normal level of salad mixing mastery. Pro tip: Generally the person closest to the register is their best mixer (mixter?), although it's difficult to sneak your way to your mixer of choice. You can get your own custom salad here and choose from maybe a hundred different ingredients, but I stick with the basic salads on the menu. According to the sign they were designed by a renowned salad chef, and how can I possibly expect to top that? We're talking quality produce, all-natural meats, and homemade dressings that are drink-worthy. The seemingly impenetrable long line moves really quickly, which is why you must be ready to blurt every detail of your order immediately when you're called on. The serious Mixt crowd does not appreciate an amateur. The mess is HELLA good topped off with Hidden Valley (haha...why yes I am a ghetto child! how'd you know??). SO..I chose the Madison salad, the mixt cobb and the cowboy. I wanted to choose one, but the chicken was spread out over all 3, so to get to the actual meat of it all I HAD to get all 3. hhahaha. Damn! A SAMOAN and his chicken... so I scooped and I was on my merry way! Cowboy Salad - romaine lettuce, black beans, red peppers, sharp cheddar, red onions and CHICKEN! w/ a blue cheese chipolte dressing. Not a fan of blue cheese nor onion, but it wasn't totally bad. I did like the chipolte bite and the CHICKEN! - decent! Mixt Cobb - lettuce, egg, tomato, apple wood bacon, avocado, blue cheese, cucumber w/ mixt cobb vinaigrette and CHICKEN. I was hoping this would be the one, but the cheese was too much and the vinaigrette didn't really do it for me, the bacon and avocado saved it and i thou gt it was ok...but the CHICKENNN!! - okay! Madison Salad - mixed greens, asparagus, truffled potatoes, paramesean cheese and pine nuts. It was supposed to be some mustard dressin joint but BLECH! I hate mustard (unless honey tinged), so ranch it is. oh..and CHICKEN! This one was HELLA GOOD. The asparagus had snap, the cheese and potatoes joined nicely and you can rarely go wrong with pine nuts, and the CHICKENNN! - HELLA good!! So really, I shoulda gave them a 2 mayyybe a 3...but then I had a peanut butter cookie. and had to take a seat to understand the party in my mouth (pervs please click the 'X' in the corner ya jerks)..the joint was HELLLLLLA GOOD!!! Choco chip..good as hell!! and the oatmeal raisin made me want to commit to it for life. That alone gained 2 stars and so much more from me on an intimate level. Mixt Greens is so overrated. I ordered a salad off their menu. It wasn't that great, wasn't that big, and wasn't that special. The ingredients are just ok. I barely got anything other than lettuce. The chicken was tasteless and sucked. The price is so high for what you get. It's laughable that people go here every day. I tried it for the first and last time today. I paid $11 for fa small salad. $11 isn't a huge amount of money in general, but its a hell of a lot for a salad. No thanks! I almost feel like I was extorted. read more

"That'll be $11." 11 bucks for a salad is kinda expensive to me. But they have this big sign that shows exactly where Mixt Greens locally sourced all it's ingredients. $11 is okay then, I told myself, I'm pumping money to the local economy. When I eventually sat down to eat my salad full of organic greens and free range chicken, I began to ponder how much of my $11 is actually going to the local economy. Mixt Green is located on the ground floors of the many buildings in the busy San Francisco Financial District. It's not unreasonable to assume that rent reaches $40,000 a month. That rent money is probably going to just one person, and one person has a limited capacity to stimulate the local economy (or the economy as a whole for that matter). A big part of my $11 just trickled out. I also noticed that there are multiple Mixt Greens around. Expanding takes capital, and capital costs money, and that money is probably interest payments to banks. Banks are definitely not local. The cost of debt also takes a nifty portion of the $11. Wait, but what about the servers and cashiers? Yes! But the employees are probably getting paid close to minimum wage, and probably on a part-time basis (Mixt Green is primarily a lunch place after all). For Mixt Green to remain competitive, the employees are probably not getting a significant piece of my $11. As I finished my delicious salad, I hope that those local ingredients are super expensive. If not, my $11 is unlikely to be as 'local Econ friendly' as I originally thought. (but please still give Mixt Green a round of applause for sourcing locally. I would give this place 5 stars if only the prices weren't so high. I thought I was getting ripped off by Harvest and Rowe by being charged $9 a salad. The two times that I have been here I have gotten the madison (asparagus, chicken, potatoes, and some other stuff). But it comes out to $11 and the line is very long (probably because of the relative newness of the place). Anyways, try the place, just don't get super used to going there, unless you aren't a law student, and can actually afford to eat out everyday. Plus, doesn't anyone feel sorry for Harvest and Rowe? Best order-at-the-counter salad place I've ever encountered! Food quality is five stars, but it gets four stars overall for being overpriced and always crowded. Super healthy without sacrificing any tastiness, the salads are fresh and delicious. You can create-your-own, but I highly recommend ordering one of the chef's tantalizing creations. Any of the salads with caramelized onions win my vote as the best, but everything I've tried has been amazing. Lots of vegetarian options, but plenty for meat lovers as well. The salads are large - you get bang for your buck. They ask you how much dressing you want, which I really appreciate. read more

When I'm not stuffing my face with trans and saturated fats for lunch, I enjoy coming here. It is like a whole foods salad, without the whole foods. Its pricey, its fresh, and they have unique items that transcend the basic "salad topping." The wait is always insane, so I either go early, or later in the afternoon. I also tend to get these salads for work functions as their prepared salads are great. The online ordering is easy, and they never mess it up. If I want to make an attempt at not being a fat ass, this is one of the best bets in town. read more

Grumpy Face. Whenever our company orders through their online purchase system, at least one order returns to us with a vital missing ingredient. Case in point: chicken salad without the chicken. Siam with tofu without the tofu. Both times charged for the extras we do not receive. Major bummer. Virtual experiences aside, whenever I try to frequent this joint in-person the line is absurdly long unless it's, say, 11 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. I appreciate the organic produce and the cucumber water (and the tattooed salad baristas. This place is my lunch time jam. I've developed a bizarre obsession with beet salads recently (I made one for dinner last night, lunch today, and will probably be getting one from here tomorrow), so this place more than satisfies this new and somewhat random obsession. Salads are quite pricey. If I feel like adding chicken to my DIY salad, it tends to jump over the $10 threshold. Quite high, but I feel like it's worth it. The line, at this location at least, is also pretty intense. The line moves fast, but it's almost rare to not see the line coming out of the door during the lunch rush. read more
