Nico's is a neighbourhood trattoria that likes to think it is a Michelin starred restaurant. $43 for overcooked shrimp risotto is unacceptable. The food was unimaginative and the portions were obscene. The gnocchi appetizer is a full meal and more than enough for two. The Risotto came with about 12 ounces of protein and a huge portion of pasta. Definitely big enough for two. We left half our food. The service was amateurish. We had to remind out waiter twice about our drink order and received them half way through our appetizers. When the appetizers were cleared, the mains were delivered but without cutlery. We had to ask three times and then we only got forks!! There seemed to be no maitre'd and no one in charge. The experience was a waste of time, money, and food. read more

Took my girlfriend here for our first year anniversary. It was definitely a surprise for here, and I'm really glad both her and I liked the food and environment here. However, I did make a reservation to sit on the second floor of the establishment, as the bar floor tends to be very loud. Our $30 charcuterie and cheese board was lacking both cheese and meat--lots of bread to make up for it... Our entrees arrived pretty much stone cold--asked to have reheated and came back tepid. When we arrived on time to our reservation they sat a group in the window table literally right in front of us. Shout-out to our server Amy who was so friendly and provided phenomenal service to us! The ambiance is cozy and intimate and perfect for special occasions. I've been here twice; once for a casual lunch and then took Andrew P. here for his birthday dinner. On both occasions, expectations were exceeded and food was DA BOMB. What I love about the food here is each appetizer / dish is well thought out and executed beautifully. The cheese & charcuterie plate is to die for and and the entrees are delicious. The chicken mac n' cheese pasta I ordered for lunch was perfection and the ahi poke chips were also fantastic. The chips are crispy, fresh, and gourmet and the portions are generous. The steak tartare appetizer was somethin else. The presentation is beautiful and each bite was HEAVEN. The star of the show was the seafood risotto which came with a generous amount of giant shrimps and the juiciest scallops I've ever tasted. The shrimp literally MELTED in my mouth. I'm so conflicted about this review. The food and service here are really good (like 4 star). However, the bar crowd is a real turnoff. We were enjoying ourselves until the bar filled with super annoying drunk people in flip flops and shorts. I thought they were looking for Sharkeez but nope, I guess this is their spot. As soon as the drunkies settled in we asked for the check. I feel like this place needs to pick an identity - either you're a beach bar or a dinner restaurant. I don't know why it took so long for me and my wife to go and try Nico's, but I only know it was a huge mistake that it took so long. We don't live in the area and two of our favorite restaurants are/were nearby so we always went to those places when we made the trek down there. That's my flimsy excuse (RIP Chianina). It was my first day of vacation and we were looking for something special or memorable to do. We pre gamed and checked out the menu the night before so we had some expectations going in. I have to say after eating here IMO this restaurant hasn't gotten the attention it deserves. This place is great. I've been to all the places in Long Beach with Michelin mentions and on the LAT best 101 restaurants and they may be sleeping on this place. It was lunch time and the bartender and waitress were slammed, 2 of them serving the entire place, but they did a great job. We went overboard, the two of us ordering the gnocchi starter, a beet salad, and two entrees. I got the king salmon and my wife got the scallop risotto. Everything was great. The quality and care taken by the kitchen staff was apparent. The drinks were on point too. I can't say enough to recommend this place, but maybe I shouldn't because I'd like to make sure I can get a seat here next time. Can't wait to go back and try more dishes! read more

It just didn't have a cozy feel and inside they have partitions set up making you feel like you're eating in a cubicle. Food quality is between good and excellent with some interesting offerings. Prices are definitely higher than average but worth it. She had lemon chicken and I had king salmon, the salmon was the better choice, the risotto with the chicken was not up to standards. We shared and enjoyed the baby gem salad. Decided to go to nicos for my anniversary last night and it was excellent. The service was great! And the food was so delicious and the portions were more than enough. We ordered the roasted garlic appetizer which was every garlic lovers dream. I had the beet salad and my hubs had the lobster bisque. The beet salad was excellent the flavor combination of the herbed goat cheese and arugula plus the crunch of the nuts made this salad a must. I had the filet mignon and he had the special which was lamb shank. The steak was cooked perfectly and packed full of flavor. The lamb came with a risotto that was also very tasty. Neither of us could finish our main course since the portions were more than we had imagined. The reviews here complaining about portions must be people that eat many plates at buffets because it was more than we could eat. read more

Very nice spot to take a date. The atmosphere is quiet and semi formal. At the hostess counter we were greeted by a typical emotionless girl with more interest in her FB page but she sat us quickly. Our waiter again emotionless and a little too serious for my liking. We ordered the special salad, mussels and clams as appetizers ...both were excellent until I discovered the long red hair at the end of my salad. Normally I don't freak out or make an issue, I just figure we are humans and it happens. Here is where I have an issue. When the waiter finally returned to ck in, I pointed it out. He said" sorry about that", and started to collect my plate. If he would have expressed more interest in the issue I would not made an effort to correct the matter. So I mentioned, " you know I don't have red hair (I'm bald) and my wife has jet black hair so this must have been from the kitchen or the hostess that actually carried over to us and served it. He replied, "what would you like me to do? I can comp you a cup of soup." I said no, take care of the salad and we're good. He said" we don't do that here, I can give you a dessert". Long story short , he comped the salad. My issue is when it's obvious there's a problem, just handle it. It's better in the long run not to get into a debate with customers. The pasta bolognese is AMAZING! Cute restaurant with indoor or outdoor seating. Service is fast and they are always nice.

I was quite dissapointed in the service , the waiter was more attentive to the larger groups that was sitting near us, there were only four of us. The waiter was friendlier to those groups. We had to ask for bread and more water from another employee. We came for a drink prior to our dinner reservations. We happened to be sitting next to the owner George and it was clear he takes great joy from owning it and the joy can be seen in the staff, the quality ingredients, and even the small things like the copper ice cube maker that makes very unique ice cubes for your scotch and bourbon drinks. We live in Carlsbad, CA and we were going to a concert nearby at The Gaslamp so we decided to go to dinner nearby. We used Yelp to find a place and decided on Nico's after seeing the reviews. Nico's is an expensive restaurant but my goodness the food and service were amazing. The 3 oils they serve with the bread are all great although my wife and I were partial to the garlic olive oil. My wife had the Seafood Risotto and I had the Braised Short Ribs but substituted the potatoes for Mushroom Risotto. Both were absolutely excellent. Amy our server was very good. Attentive and accomodating. Nico's is a small place but you could tell by looking at the bar it was a local favorite. If you really wanna feel bad and boujee in long beach I guess you can spend your money here. Came here for date night with the husband and to celebrate his birthday (belated). I easily made reservations a couple days before that Friday night. We walked right in and were seated right away. We ordered the burrata salad (Wild arugula, baby heirloom tomato, fresh basil, white balsamic vinaigrette), which was pretty good. I've had better though. We also had the New Zealand Sea Bass (Oven roasted with lemon, fennel and olives over saffron risotto with caper beurre blanc), which was excellent! The fish was perfectly cooked. Everything was seasoned nicely. The risotto was perfect! We ended the meal with free cheesecake since we were there celebrating his birthday. Having lived in Long Beach for 24 years, my husband and I decided we needed to try all the places we haven't eaten at yet. Nico's being one of them. We arrived early, on a Friday night at 5:45. We would go to a movie after at 7:50. Plenty of time. Especially because the place was empty. WRONG. Please note upon our arrival, only one table utilized and a few people at the bar. My gut told me Leave. We were seated and immediately given our menus. 10 minutes later they came by and took our drink order. Gave us bread. We received our drinks. Which by the way I ordered glass of Charles Krug Zin and I saw the bartender put the bottom of bottle number one into my glass and then open a new bottle to top it off. BAD. But I was in a good mood and didn't want to do battle. About 10 minutes later they took our order. Waited a considerable amount of time and my salad and my husbands crab cake appeared. His crab cake was better than anticipated. My salad, not so much. (I cook well, so it's pretty hard to impress me). Waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting.....at 7:10 still no food. My husband got the car. I asked for our bill. The waiter was dumbfounded. I said we couldn't wait any longer. He brought out my food. My husbands not yet ready, still in the kitchen? I told him I'm sorry, but we can't stay. I went to the "manager" and told him what happened. He was pompously apologetic. I was told by the waiter to expect a 2 hour dine time and the Mgr shot back with "No, an hour and a half." It was an hour and 25 minutes and no food. He kindly credited the main courses and bagged our food to go. Saw The Fighter which was amazing. Went home and ate. The Ahi tare tare was edible. However the avacado at the bottom was the same thickness as the ahi layer, which was too much. (Spaghetinni's ahi tower, much better). The duck was tasty, very small portions. I don't think a restaurant has to be haughty to be good. Your restaurant hosts should be gracious and welcoming. The lightening a little too dim at the tables, the recessed not centered and we literally had to use the candle to see the menu. The interior is very nice and plays to romance, yet the football game on the flat screen right there at the bar voids that out completely. Make up your mind sports bar or nice romantic restaurant. We were told we should have told them we needed to be out in less than 2 hours. They should have advised us it would take 2 hours to eat there! Reminded us of "Hells Kitchen" episodes. Not impressed.
