Love this place .... usually. Good vibe in bar and cozy and romantic and also upbeat and fun. However, had such a disappointing recent experience just have to Yelp. Planned special dinner for friends from out of area. Called and left detailed message to reserve table and requested booth in the bar area and got a text confirmation. Called that afternoon and spoke to a young man and clearly stated my table request. When we showed up, we were told wait for bar booth would be 2 hours. Lots of weak excuses about how staff should know not to confirm table requests. Finally seated in back "lounge" room which was just OK and waitress obviously new...very uneven service. Arrived too late for dinner but couldn't imagine having a better time. Perfectly friendly and attentive bartender (the drinks were amazing even if the wine smelled like it had been open for days) and an amiable owner. Oddly enough, what really set this place apart was the crowd. Not because the crowd was especially beautiful or hip; but because every person in Nico's was in love with the place! I live in the Long Beach area and this is by far one of my favorite local spots. The food is always amazing!! Whether I want to have a nice dinner or something small from their bar menu...always delicious! This is one of our favorite spots for a romantic dinner. I love the Shortribs (almost as good as the ones at the Gaslamp) and I love the Baby Beets and Goat Cheese Salad. I also like the fact that the menu seems to have small changes somewhat regularly, yet seems to always have lots that I get excited about. I love this restaurant! When I want my favorite thing in the world, I go to Nico's. They have the best gnocchi I have ever eaten! Had Shrimp the size of a small Lobster tail with Day Boat Scallops.....Sat at the bar, great selection. one of the best and biggest Martinis i have had. Dessert hard to choose...all sounded great. Been here once before and the food was pretty good along with the service. This time not so much. Ordered the calamari and the red sauce that came with it was so hot that it burned my wife's skin off. Staff brought over cream for burns. Why would the kitchen staff bring out something that was boiling hot? Calamari was ok nothing special besides the price being too much. And that would sum up the rest of the food as well. Nothing special mostly overpriced food that is forgettable. Like the chef is on autopilot. I had the special New York steak strip in some brown sauce with onions and mushrooms that you could find at dennys except it was $52 . My wife had the seafood risotto with chewy room temperature shrimp and scallops. All and all a complete disappointment. My husband is allergic to garlic; therefore, it is difficult to find restaurants to accommodate his allergy. Usually we are able to find a few menu items that can be prepared but many dishes either have premade sauces or are prepared ahead of time. Not only did Nicos offer many items but most are freshly prepared so the chef was able to create items leaving out garlic. My husband made surprise reservations for my Birthday after looking up Yelp reviews for a restaurant just a few doors down from Nico's, forgetting we had had been there before with a not so great experience so upon arrival he made a quick U-turn and pulled up to Nico's valet. Nico's happened to have a table available and it couldn't have been better! We started off with a perfectly mixed and chilled martini and the mushroom Gnocchi - OMG, it was a tastebud "0"!! The portion was so generous It could have sufficed as a meal in itself. We split the burrata salad (again, generous portion) and we both ordered the steak and lobster thermador. Here's where there was the only glitch in the evening, but it turned out for the better. Our waiter arrived with only one entree, but since we had stuffed ourselves with the delicious fresh warm bread with three different dipping sauces, Gnocchi, and salad, we just decided to share, and it was more than enough, but also gave us room for dessert - Yay! we love this place, only had been for lunch until saturday evening, we always loved our lunch and wanted to try it for dinner, and we are certainly glad we did..everything was wonderful, starting with the very friendly and professional valet...we were seated upstairs in a wonderful cozy and inviting booth, our server Laura, was there quickly to explain specials and take drink orders, she was attentive , knowledgeable and fun to deal with..we had a special request from the lunch menu and it was taken care of with no issue, thank you..the food was terrific, properly prepared, seasoned and delivered, all top chefs here, we also got to meet George the owner, always nice to see the owner on site..thanks to everyone for such a special evening, look forward to our next visit read more

This is one of my husbands and my favorite restaurants. We love everything we have had there. The bread and dipping sauces are amazing to start! Gnocchi is delish! Salads are also great to have with an entree as well. I love the sausage and short rib rigatoni. Great wine list and service as well. Parking can be tough in Naples, but they have valet. :) read more

Thank you Nico's for almost ruining our annual company dinner . So I call maybe a little over 2 months ago to make reservations for a party of 18 and to ensure everything is set up with plenty of time in advance. I speak to the gal that answered the phone and she apparently takes down my reservation. Everything is set up, she answers all my questions and we are set or so I thought. Luckily, I decided to call today to confirm the reservation and give them the final count and guess what?? No reservation and they cannot accommodate our party. Are you serious... We cannot move our dinner to another date and we are basically out of luck, with only a few days before our dinner. Unfortunately, I am unable to review this place on anything else but this huge inconvenience they have caused us. Anyway, never again Nico's, never again. Its too bad, I am just glad I called to confirm and we didn't just show up on Friday to find out we did not have a reservation. If you make reservations, make sure to confirm or you might be left out in the cold. read more

I made online Valentine's Day reservations for Nico's for which I received a confirmation. Nearly 3 hours later I receive a call from Nico's informing me that they will not be honoring my reservations. While I was initially upset at the manner in which this inconvenient situation had been handled by the restaurant, I soon after received a personal phone call from Tracy. My reservation was eventually honored and Tracy personally greeted me on the evening of my reservation. On Tuesday, November 10, 2009 we had the pleasure of dining at Nico's. Our last experience there, several years ago, was very good. The atmosphere transports you to another place--LA, NY, Italy. The order of special pumpkin soup was very good, though after a while the turkey dripping taste wore thin. The short ribs were quite good. My wife had specifically ordered (and I repeated it) the starter size of the scallops because of the smaller size and it had polenta. She got the dinner size and it had risotto. The waiter brushed it off and laughed. My fettucine with salmon: salamon chunks were too large; sauce was delicious; the egg noodles were clumped together in great wads and either undercooked or uncooked. We won't go again and will steer friends away from Nico's and direct them to Fora, a door or two away. read more

Booked a reservation for a party of five at Nico's on Saturday for a Birthday Dinner, based on a recommendation from Long Beach Gondolas. It was bustling when we arrive. The bar was full and the noise levels were a little high, but it made me feel great, because I knew people were enjoying the drinks and food...our table was upstairs in a private little room, absolutely perfect seating. The waiter was the most attentive I've had in a long time. The menu was a little smaller than I expected, but the selections were very different and it seemed as if each item was a special of the night. We each had something difference, chicken, lamb, steak, it was all perfect. The veggies were amazing and tasty, sauteed was distinct flavor. Yes, it was a little pricey, but very worth the splurge. I would recommend and come back for a special occasion again. It's a perfect place to pop in for appetizers and drinks too. read more
