This is your obligatory "gwai lo" (white people) Chinese restaurant surrounded by otherwise mostly authentic Chinese cuisine. When I worked around the corner, I would sometimes drop by for a diversion from the other places, but it was definitely far from my favorite. Also, my manager often told me to pick up his order from here, so I figured I would probably get something as well. This is the kind of place where Caucasians go to eat Chinese food if they are too intimidated to enter the other joints. Most of the times I have come here, I was the only Chinese guy in the entire restaurant besides the employees. They even greeted me in English as I entered the door. Flavoring is decent, but very Americanized. It's certainly a step above the watered down mall style Chinese food at Panda Express or Mr. Chau's, but it is in the same vein. If you look around, and notice that the most popular dishes are broccoli beef, kung pao chicken, and Mongolian beef, this should tell you the whole story. Oh, BTW, you are probably thinking that my manager is Caucasian, right? Wrong. He's a 100% Twinkie Chinese guy who can't speak a lick of Chinese. That explains it all. read more

This is some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. We ordered $70 worth of items, and the only edible ones are the potstickers and egg roles. The Sesame Chicken was essentially all breading and no chicken, and had a very bad taste, but the Cashew Chicken was totally inedible. I took a bite and had to spit it out. My husband didn't believe it could be that bad but took a whiff and nearly refused to try it after just that. He ended up taking a bite to double check and spit his out as well. read more

My friend had her wedding rehearsal dinner here so we pretty much took over the whole restaurant. I don't remember how many courses we had but the food just kept on coming. The interior is kind of small and dingy, and it took awhile for some of the food to come out, but maybe its because we bombarded the restaurant all at once and they didn't know how to handle the crowd. Nothing fancy about this place - Just good food at an affordable price among a street full of restaurants. The cuisine is Shanghainese/Taiwanese which is different from the typical Cantonese restaurants a couple blocks away (Jumbo and Hing Lung), but I guess some people can' t even tell the difference. In fact, the crowd here seems to be more Taiwanese vs HK/Cantonese, meaning its a bit more quiet. No offense. The food here is not as oily as typical authentic Chinese food. For a party of 4 (3 guys) with no left overs, it was about $100 for 6 dishes: 1. Twice Cooked Pork - my fav dish out of the 6 2. Szechuan Spices Spare Ribs - second fav dish 3. Sauteed Eel strips - least favorite, no flavor, not to crazy about the slimey texture either 4. Shanghai Style Shrimp - ehh.. not much flavor 5. Shredded Tofu dish - pretty good 6. After being virtually ignored at two other Noriega restaurants [I had my 2 1/2 year old grand son with me], I stepped into Peking and had a completely different experience. We came after the lunch rush so the place was empty. We were seated immediately and brought a high chair. The service was amazing and, considering we had a toddler, efficient. In the same way that you expect lobsters from Maine, steak from Texas and clam chowder from Boston, China is packed with a plethora of different localized of cuisines. If you want some authentic Shanghainese food, this is the place to go. For the uninitiated, the culture in Shanghai is completely different from that of Taiwan or Hong Kong. And while most people in Shanghai speak Mandarin, most are bilingual and speak Shanghainese, a local dialect that's so different that it's unintelligible to people that speak either Cantonese or Mandarin. Now, I'm not an expert on Chinese cuisine, but I do know that if you order your Mongolian beef and kung pao chicken here you're completely missing out on the experience. Reading reviews like, "This is the most authentic General Tso's Chicken that I've ever had!" make me cringe. I came here with my mom and my sister for a quiet family dinner. According to my mom (who's originally from Shanghai), Peking Restaurant recently hired a new Shanghainese chef. She had no problem speaking to the host and the waitress in Shanghainese. (Even though I can't understand a lick of it, it's not everyday I get to see my parents speaking to strangers in Shanghainese. When I was backpacking through Europe, I remember my ears perking up every time I heard somebody speaking American English, it was an immediate and familiar touchstone. I'm sure for my parents, even though they've been living here for the past forty years or so, it must be the same way for them when they hear somebody speaking Shanghainese.) So what's good here? I'm pretty squeamish when it comes to particular foods, even still, the fish head soup was really good. Savory broth with chunks of white fish meat served family style. Delicious. And while I didn't see any fish head itself, I'm sure the $20 price is enough to scare most people away. Of course, there are two of my favorites, the siu long bow and the Shanghainese noodles. Siu long bow is a Shanghainese style dumpling that's filled with a pork filling and steaming broth. When you eat it, you want to be careful not to pop it and let it spill all over your plate, otherwise you've missed out on what makes the dish so special. And for a small restaurant on Noriega street, the siu long bow here was surprisingly good. Shanghainese fried noodles are always good. The egg noodles are thicker than your average noodle, and are fried with soy sauce and a little bit of pork. Sure it's packed with lots of starch and lots of oil, but it's damn good. After our meal, the chef came out to greet us with some free desert on the house--a nice touch for a neighborhood establishment. If you're interested in trying out some good Shanghainese food, give Peking restaurant a shot. Just ask for a few recommendations before you cave in and order the shrimp fried rice, OK? read more

My parents wanted to try this place since a friend of theirs recommended it. According to the menu and the owners, the food they serve is Sichuan and Shanghai. The chef owner is Taiwanese. The place is quite large, but very outdated. The service (the owner served us) was super friendly. Since she recommended Sichuan items, we stuck with her recommendations except for the Shanghai dumplings. Crab & Pork Shanghai Dumplings - 2 stars. The skin was too thick but the filling was good with lot of soup and crab flavor. Hot & Sour soup - 2 stars. Not spicy or sour enough. Sichuan Boiled Beef (not sure if the translation is correct here) - 2 stars. I would give this dish 4 stars, but it was way too salty. Flavor and texture were excellent, but it's almost not edible because of the soy/salt. Pea Sprouts with garlic - 4 stars. This was outstanding. Perfectly cooked, slightly crisp. Spicy Beef Tendon - 4 stars. This was the best item we had. The tendon was sliced very thin with very nice Sichuan spices: garlic, chili, sichuan peppercorn, hot oil, cilantro, g. onions. Like most Sichuan places, they tone their spices down for the largely Cantonese clientele. So, if you like spicy, ask for extra spicy and extra sichuan peppercorn which will bring it closer to the authentic version. Pan fried red bean pastry - 3 stars. A touch greasy, but tasty. The Sichuan flavors are authentic, but unfortunately, the food is too salty. read more

Dad was craving dumplings/pot stickers, and San Tung on Irving was PACKED. After all, it was a little after 6:30 on a Sunday night. So we decided to see what we'd find on Noriega. Randomly picked this place - we checked out the menu beforehand, and a few things did catch our eye. It was a little dingy on the inside, but still clean. We ended up ordering: Boiled Shrimp w/ Chinese Chives Dumplings: Tasty little dumplings. The vinegar that came with these was a little sweet. We probably should have added soy sauce from our table. Pot Stickers: Crispy! I loved how the skin was not too thick. The meat inside was okay. Snow Cabbage & Pork w/ Rice Cakes: Not a very large plate, but very tasty. The snow cabbage was fresh, not the preserved kind. Plus, there were juicy black mushrooms too. Didn't appear particularly oily. Probably my favorite dish of the meal. Shanghai-Style Clay Pot: Basically, a clay pot of rice cooked with fatty pork and veggies. A little bit on the salty side, and we had to pick out the fatty pork. The names of these dishes are a little different because some of these items are not on the take-out menu! I usually like to grab one as a reference, but it didn't do me much good this time. Yes, most of the other patrons in the restaurant did not appear to be Chinese. And the tea was just a tea bag in water. But we picked out a few of the Northern Chinese dishes and were actually quite pleased with the end result. The dishes we ordered were a little on the small side, while the teriyaki platter and sweet and sour pork on the other table looked ginormous. 3 to 3.5 stars - I actually might come back to this place when I'm craving the Northern Chinese-style cooking. Mostly Mandarin-speaking, but they do have someone who understands Cantonese if you don't feel like flexing your English skills. One of the waiters/possibly an owner appeared to be a hit with the female patrons. Saw him teaching them how to use chopsticks and even feeding one of them with her chopsticks. The name of this restaurant caught my eyes. Peking is the capital of China, but since 1949, Beijing is the new word instead. Yes, the city to host the 2008 Olympics. On the other hand, Peking Duck is still called Peking Duck. It became well-known to the world during Henry Kissinger first visit to China. The Secretary of State told everyone that he is in love with this new dish. In the 70s, China and Peking Duck were very hot topics. I believe this restaurant was opened after Nixon's first visit to China in order to take advantage of the 'Peking' popularity. Unfortunately, the restaurant is as old as its name, from its setting to the food quality. My friend ordered the almond chicken lunch special which is served with hot and sour soup and steamed rice, $5.50. I ordered the chicken with garlic, $5.50. Both dishes tasted very similar, overly sweet. The only difference is the almond and the garlic. $5.50 is cheap for all the food and tea, but the overall experience is bad. It took TWO HOURS for them to deliver my order. (I was told 45 minutes.) After an hour, I called to see if there was a problem. They assured me it was "on the way, ten minutes." Twenty minutes later, I get a call from the driver asking me for my address. Wait...what? I already gave the restaurant my address an hour and twenty minutes ago when I ordered. The driver tells me I'll be there in ten minutes." I'm not sure where this "ten minutes" keeps coming from, because it's fictitious. The food itself is cold, greasy, and less than mediocre. The main flavor is grease and salt. This is worse than mall food court "chinese" food. I called the restaurant and told them this entire situation was unacceptable. The guy on the phone (same person who took my order) laughed it off and said, "My bad!" I won't order from here again and I could never recommend this to anyone. read more

Peking Restaurant is a fine alternative to Little Beijing for Mandarin/Szechwan (non-Cantonese) Chinese cuisine when you don't want to deal with the latter's ever-moody owner. You will always be greeted with a smile and a warm welcome at Peking Restaurant. The beef dishes here are better than the chicken dishes. I enjoy the Orange Beef, Beef with String Beans, Hunan Beef, and Spicy Beef with Flaming Chili Oil (a.k.a. Water Cooked Beef). I am also a fan of the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. The Mao Pao Tofu is probably one of the best I've tasted in the City, but it can be inconsistent at times. The Peking Fried Chicken Wings are a huge disappointment. They cut the wings in half! Peking Restaurant has two menus. The first menu has all of the dishes one would expect of a Chinese restaurant. The other features more native cuisine. The good thing is that the more native menu is in English, but the wait staff always seems hesitant in giving it out unless you are of the same tribe. Ask for it! Came here to try out their Xiao Loong Baos and Onion Pancakes. A friend of a friend actually owns this and recommended to try it if I liked spicy foods. I was with the bf who is totally weaksauce on anything spicy, so we avoided ordering any items with more than 1 chilli pepper on the menu. Dishes we got: Xiao Loong bao Crab Xiao Loong bao - never seen this before, so we HAD to try it. Onion pancakes Sizzling rice soup Chef's Chicken with basil My family is a huge xiao loong bao fan so we eat it pretty often. From my experiences, I think Peking had OK ones. I mean, the skin wasn't too thick or too thin, but the thinner the better. The soup inside these little treasures are THE most important. The soup in the ones here weren't as flavorful as I wanted them to be, but for some place in the sunset, I'd come back! Saves me a trip to c-town! In addition to the regular ones, the crab ones were pretty tasty too. The crab meat I expected were softer but it's alright. If I were to choose to order the regular or crab ones next time, it'll definitely be the regular ones. Onion pancakes are one of my fav dishes....the ones here were a little disappointing. Just a tad too oily....but it was cripsy. I think the ones I prefer would be thinner and flakier. The sizzling soup was delish...good amounts of veggies and scallops. Maybe just a bit on the salty side, but not bad. A good soup to try out! Last, the Chef's chicken with basil. It came wrapped in foil. You open it up, and the strong scent of basil and spices come out. Yum!! They use white meat chicken, so that's a super plus for me! I started coming here ten years ago, and the place never disappointed. On the outside, it's your typical Chinese restaurant with your usual decor and your usual fish tanks. However, if you dig a little deeper, you'd find out something else. It's the kind of place where the owners, a.k.a. the waiter and the waitress, are always nice, helpful, friendly and even funny. It's the kind of place where I used to tip even when I got takeout because I wanted to be nice. It's the kind of place where the hot and sour soup is so good, my dad swears it has the ability to cure a cold. All the food here is good, but not spectacular. Peking restaurant had only one signature dish worth trying - Peking beef. It was my favorite thing to order here; one might even call it my guilty pleasure. Today my two friends and I went to Peking for a late lunch/early dinner. We ordered some appetizers while I was waiting for my Peking beef. When my dish came, I noticed that something wasn't quite right. My dish looked . . . different. I am not sure whether they changed the chef or otherwise messed with near perfection, but it wasn't the Peking beef of yore. It was a greasier, fatter, blander, doughier version of the dish I had grown to love. I was so shocked and disappointed, even the crispy rice noodles didn't cheer me up. I never thought I'd say this, but I don't think I have a reason to come back to Peking. The fortune cookie, however, was dead on. I have to completely disagree with all the negative reviews about this place. Of course we've only been in a couple of times generally we have delivery. All the steamed dishes are prepared perfectly; very clean and not greasy. The sweet stuff is sweet; the savory stuff is savory. Your standard Chinese restaurant. Nothing catering to vegetarians on the menu so I went with my standard vegetable fried rice. I was a bit concerned about my order because the waitress was confused when I told her vegetable fried rice. For some reason she looked at my menu, then looked at me, and finally asked it I wanted fried rice or chow mein. It took a bit of explaining that I did not eat meat and only wanted vegetables in my fried rice. Other than that everything was all good. The waitress was nice and checked on us occasionally. I tend to be picky about fried rice but this was a good one. It was flavorful and they did not overdo it on the vegetable. I hate when I order vegetable fried rice and they serve me vegetables mixed with a little rice. Would go back for a quick take out. read more

The only time I go here is for their Beef Chow Fun. It is one of the best although I must admit that today's Beef Chow Fun was a bit sub-substard and oily. I will give their Beef Chow Fun one more try -- if it's the same as today's, then they must have changed their chef or something. For 6 of us we ordered from their lunch menu ($4.75 per dish), which came with rice and soup. The sweet and spicy soup had a good kick to it. For the lunch dishes we ordered: Sweet and Sour Pork, Kung Pao Chicken, Spicy Sze-chuan Prawns, Spicy Egg Plant In Sze-chuan Sauce, and some tofu dish This was plenty to of food!
