    Baklava and potato pastries
    Arnold T.

We got the most popular sweet and savory pastry - baklava and potato and it worth going to Relic. I was a bit skeptical about getting the baklava as they tend to be too sweet for my liking. But I really enjoyed this...flaky crunchy outside and load of caramelized walnuts inside. The potato pastry was also delish. I personally would like more potato slices. It's slightly spicy. Again same flaky crunchy exterior. This place ranks high for me like Michi Michi. Tucked in the business area of Miramar, you'd never see this place driving by. It's a small stor front and there are no seating area inside. Just a few benches, 1 table and 1 chair and lawn area for dining. Pastries are reasonably priced especially on how good they are.

Pastries here were very good. Flaky and buttery but not overly sweet. Service was great. Fast and friendly. Limited tables but it works. Grassy area where people brought blankets and sat there while eating this Deliciousness. If be back again and again

Had an opportunity to try the following to go order back in August 16: 1 Apple Fritter 1 Banana Miso Milk Chocolate Cookies 1 Lamb Rillette Croissant 1 Matcha Kouign Amann 1 Passionfruit & Melon Pavlova Danish 1 Potato Cheddar & Garlic Confit Tile with Karanchi Chili Crisp Oil 2 Tangerine Crannoli 2 Tiramisu Cinnamon Bun Everything is so good! Expensive, but worth it! Yelp was right though. The Potato Cheddar & Garlic Confit Tile with the additional $ for chili oil is so worth it! The lamb rillette croissant is also really really good. I really enjoyed the banana miso milk and the matcha kouign amann for the sweet pastries. Can't wait to go back!

Was in La Jolla for the weekend and was on the top lists of cafes I wanted to try. However, I had a hard time trying to find the exact location (and if it was actually opened due to closing for a period of time) because it wasn't listed back in August. Preordering and the pick up experience was very easy and straightforward. When preordering, there was a lot of sold out items, so definitely make sure to pre order early if you would like to try some of their popular pasteries. I really liked the peach bread pudding- sweet and loved the textures. The matcha pastry was a little underwhelming because the matcha was very subtle.

Not many pastries left when we showed up in the afternoon

I did not know about this bakery before being driven here so was not prepared for the divine creations I was about to consume. Wow, the Swedish Selma bun and danish were so deliciously and masterfully decadent. This may have ruined me. Don't know how I can go back to Paris Baguette, 85 degree, or any other chain pastry stores now.

Finally had a chance to try Relic. Loved the pre-order and super easy pick up. We placed an order on Friday night for Saturday pick-up. Pro-tip: don't bother trying to park in the parking lot. It's small and one way in and out. Street parking is plenty. Walk in and they had all the orders ready. There was actually another pop-up at the same time but I think they were pretty new. Seemed like everyone was going to Relic and not to Bakemellow. We ordered: Potato with chili oil, tiramisu cinnamon roll, beanies weenies, elevated ham, cheese, jalapeno, and banana miso chocolate cookie My favorites were the savory ones, specifically the potato garlic one and added the chili oil. Second best was the elevated ham, cheese, and jalapeno. Beanies weenies was last. For the sweet ones, the tiramisu cinnamon roll was ok. Was less like a cinnamon roll and too much cream imo. Banana miso chocolate cookie wasn't too my liking but my husband enjoyed it. They have other ones we'll have to come back and try.

For the price I paid for the pastries, I was really disappointed in the banana miso chocolate chip cookie because mine did not look like the other pictures where it was too thick and bready where it was crumbly with each bite. It tasted more like a crumbly banana bread or muffin than a cookie where it broke apart after the first bite. Flavor was interesting with the banana mixed with sweet and savory that was unique. As for the other pasties I ordered, the double chocolate croissant and the lamb riclette were very delicious and flaky.

Relic Bakery is probably one of my favorite, if not my only favorite, artisan pastry bakeries in San Diego. Flavor combinations and presentation has always been on point. I have yet to try something and been disappointed. The staff service has been A+ and always helpful when asking what is what and explaining certain ingredients. I truly look forward to Relic's pastry drops every week and I cannot wait until their actual bakery store front opens soon!

Relic : B, meaning "Good: a solid choice if in the area, but not a destination restaurant." Executive summary: visually beautiful, museum worthy pastries, and for SoCal standards, reasonably priced. Unfortunately, although the food generally tasted good, they simply don't measure up to how spectacular they look. If I were visiting a friend, I'd gladly buy from them. For self, take home consumption, out of the places I've tried so far, I'd pick Wayfarer. ------------------------------- Sunday, August 10 was truly indulgent. First, a meeting at Izola, followed by a 2:30pm pastry pick-up time slot at Relic. The work kitchen is in an industrial area near Miramar. When I arrived, my box was sitting on a rolling trolley for grab & go - very easy peasy. By 3pm, Penny & I were chilling at my friend's backyard, cutting pastries, and solving the world's greatest problems. Butter croissant $5.25 (solid B ) : it was a good croissant. Light and buttery, but lacked flakiness and crunch to truly be outstanding. Double pain au chocolate $6.00 (high B+ ) : flaky, very nice balance of chocolate to pastry. Clear highlight of the bunch and would gladly eat this again. Matcha Kouign amann $6.25 (solid B ) : beautiful pastry but flavorwise, it was a touch light on the matcha, and lacked the crispiness I would have expected. Pistachio Dubai chocolate danish $7.75 (low B ) : another gorgeous pastry that gave me very high expectations. I could barely taste pistachio in the cream, and with chocolate inside the croissant, the sweetness overpowered the dough. Tiramisu cinnamon bun $6.50 (C+ ) : a severe lack of balance where the blob of sweetness on top didn't have a strong enough resemblance to tiramisu overpowered every other flavor, with the weight of the cream & I assume mascarpone cheese killing the overall texture of the pastry. All that said, I've seen pictures from Relic for a while and glad I finally got to try. A fellow foodie suggested I try the fruity options over the chocolate variety - too bad I had already ordered prior to reading that advice. They offer enough variety that they definitely deserve another shot. Just need to order smarter, and value wise, I find them quite fair given the quality. Scoring: Food: B (75%) "Good, a solid example of whatever it is." No weights given for vibe or service since they're take-out only. Value factor: "Fair - nothing gained, nothing lost" Final restaurant score: Food (75%) + Vibe (N/A) + Service (N/A) = 75% x Value (100%) = 75%, meaning "Good: a solid choice if in the area, but not a destination restaurant."

Lamb Rillette Croissant, Dubai Chocolate Danish, Yuzu Mango Danish, Potato Cheddar and Garlic Confit Tile, Banana Miso Milk Chocolate Cookie
    Ashley L.

I placed my order Thursday evening to pick up on Saturday morning and had no issues with the pastries, all of them were in stock! The pickup process was very smooth. They were organized and had all the boxes labeled neatly on the shelf, so all you have to do is stand in line and tell them your name and you're good to go. There was plenty of street parking too. I'll rank what I got from 1 to 5 and give you my review: 1. Lamb Rillette Croissant: Perfectly flaky, savory, salty, lamb was so tender and this was my perfect pastry considering I am a savory girl 2. Banana Miso Chocolate Cookie: The perfect texture for a cookie, perfectly flavorful and rich 3. Dubai Chocolate Danish: Very rich and flaky, it was a lot of chocolate. I didn't really taste the pistachio or feel the kataifi texture 4. Potato Cheddar and Garlic Confit Tile: Personally it tasted like a less flavorful samosa to me. 5. Yuzu Mango Danish: This one was filled with custard and mango slices but it felt like it was somewhat lacking flavor in my opinion Overall this place is pretty good. You should definitely try it and see which ones you like. I would honestly get 5 lamb rillette croissants next time.

Cinnamon Rolls, Almond Bear Claw, Kouign Amann & Double Pain Au Chocolat
    Blossom V.

Pick up order from their ghost kitchen- liked the option of location close to home. Easy ordering from Hotplate site. Awesome customer service, I had received a gift card for the cafe that could not be used on Hotplate, they were able to exchange gift card for me. Favorite item from the order was Almond Bear Claw, flakey, buttery and delicious. You can definitely taste the quality ingredients in all the pastries. My only disappointment was the Double Pain Au Chocolat. I was expecting it to look like the picture from the website-maybe a bad batch? I wouldn't have picked this one from a display case. Regardless all good and looking forward to visiting the cafe.

Everything we tried was okay. The standout was the strawberry ricotta pastry. Not worth waiting 20-30+ minutes. Feels super transactional so I didn't feel a need to return.

Kouign Amann w/ salted caramel, potato dashi tile, classic pain au chocolate, cherry hibiscus clafoutis danish, pandan danish
    Catherine G.

Pastries are a lil pricey but they are tasty (and I love that they have monthly specials). The savory ones were a bit too salty for my taste but the texture is nice and crisp. There's about 10 or so parking spaces, but if it's full there's a good bit of parking along the street. I came in 10 min before they opened on Sunday and we were second in line bc the line builds up a bit after it opens.

I ended up getting a vegan almond croissant and a vegan chocolate hazelnut rolled croissant, both of which were ridiculously good. The almond croissant was nice and flaky yet still buttery inside, and the almond filling was lovely. However my favorite was definitely the rolled croissant, the hazelnut creme inside was so light and creamy and when taken in a bite with the croissant and chocolate shell coating was heavenly. They had so many other options that looked incredible, in particular if I came back I would definitely want to try the vegan kouign amann. The inside is cute and has a small amount of seating, however the place is quite busy and fills up very fast. Me and my friend were lucky to get there early and be able to claim a table, and so they plated the pastries for us quite nicely and heated up her pizza croissant. Everyone we interacted with was lovely. This place is actually perfection I cannot recommend enough.

We got the vegan strawberry and it had custard inside but it came out by the time we got home on the road trip and the edges were hard. The plain croissant was good and the little cheese one.

Nestled among…read morethe walkable, sun-drenched streets lined with palm trees and ocean breezes, this boutique café captures that rare blend of upscale SoCal charm and effortless European sophistication. It's an absolute staple of what makes exploring the Village so special. Walking through the front entrance, you're greeted by a curated retail space that feels like Crate & Barrel met a boutique shop in the heart of Paris. It's packed with unique home goods, chic trinkets, and aesthetic lifestyle items. Be sure to wander all the way to the back shelves--there are so many hidden gems worth taking home! The staff upfront and on the floor were incredibly warm, welcoming, and happy to chat while you browse. As you head toward the back, the space opens up into a dream of a café. One of the cutest touches is being able to actually watch the bakers rolling out fresh dough and crafting pastries right before your eyes. The smell of rich espresso and buttery pastry crust filling the air is irresistible. I grabbed a coffee and a fresh pastry, waited a short bit for a table on the patio, and pulled out my journal. Listening to the ambient music and ocean breeze in the courtyard while writing was pure heaven. Whether you're stopping in to shop for home decor, grab a top-tier espresso, or just soak in the slow, luxurious rhythm of La Jolla, this place is perfection.

The café has such a cool, relaxed vibe and feels really spacious, with plenty of comfortable seating both inside and outside. The pastries look beautiful and are beautifully displayed! I ended up getting the mixed berry custard dessert, which was really delicious and not overly sweet. I also ordered an almond croissant, it was impossible to choose just one! If you haven't been here yet, definitely stop by. I recommend going early for the best selection of pastries!

The only way you could tell it was a matcha drink was purely the color of the drink. I also got three cake flavors to try and was really excited to try them because they looked so beautiful. Unfortunately, the cake tasted dry and the flavor was just average. As for the service, they got my name wrong horrendously. I don't know if it was because it was loud or the cashier didn't bother asking for clarification but they gave me a new name of Rachel. This led me to wait for my drink for well over 30 mins before I had to ask for help. The overall ambiance of the store is very aesthetic and nicely kept but what really made me confused was there was a complete lack of trash bins. The only way you could dispose of your trash was giving it to a worker which was inconvenient because there are a total of 2-3 workers who are always busy because of the long line. For the price of the matcha and drinks, I'd expect more. I would not come here unless you love waiting in lines for some below average pastries and drinks.
