LA style, this place has it! The vibes were immense, with an old fashioned decor and architecture that was built to impress. I loved the layout. The moment you enter, you were in the line to look at the counter display and order, which kept everything moving and efficient. Then you turn and are in the expansive seating area, which is packed and yet full of tables. The decor is darker, however well-lit. We had a spacious table with plenty of room to interact and eat. The potato pancake was decadent, with salmon and salmon roe galore. The avocado salad, pistachio and chocolate pastries and coffee were also amazing! Came here for brunch on a weekend morning and the place had a line out the door. The wait wasn't too bad at least and we were in and seated post ordering after a few minutes. Space was a bit limited, but we didn't have to wait to find a table at least. Interior was really pretty and eclectic with the plants and decorations. Definitely felt really nice to just sit inside. Soooo good! Absolutely loved everything I ordered. Brioche toast is a must try and it's so big it can definitely be shared. Grilled cheese was just what I needed after a long night. There was a line when we came on a sunday but it moved fairly quickly. You can come back to the register to add baked goods for takeaway if you're dining in. We used this restaurant as the place for our Farewell Brunch during our wedding weekend, because it gives off a "Leaky Cauldron" vibe and since our wedding was Harry Potter themed, we thought this place would be perfect....and we were right! It is a large piece of bread and it is light and fluffy and tastes good. But it's very sweet (even without maple syrup) and it's so airy, it's not filling. I ordered a side of bacon steak on the side to add some protein and the small piece of pork was $9. It tasted ok, kind of chewy. So many pastries to choose! Definitely arrive early in the morning to have the best selection to choose from. My favorite was the coconut cake with yuzu curd and raspberry. We got there around 9am on a Sunday and were able to easily find free street parking (read the signs). There was a line and we waited maybe 10-20 minutes to order. There is valet parking for $14. For breakfast, brunch, lunch: you order at the counter any pastries on display and at the register you order drinks and food from the menu. They give you a cup with a number on it and you find yourself a table carrying any pastries you purchased. They will bring your food/drink order out and that's the service. Note that they add a 4% service fee to the subtotal (you will get sales taxed on this added 4%). The prompted suggested tip options are (20-25%) so if you choose the suggested options, you are actually tipping over 24-29%. I did not like the added mental math to do while paying when there's a long line of people waiting behind you. The French toast was large and very soft from the brioche. It was delicious. They mushroom toast was great, but be aware that it is also very rich. Shakshuoka was great. I alternated bites of this dish to help balance out the richness of the mushroom toast. Had an audition nearby and a friend BEGGED me to bring her French toast. Since we both live in the valley we don't make it over here as much. Once my sister found out where I was headed she asked for a plate too. It's been years since I've been here and I recall now why it's always been on my list. The French toast is big, fluffy and definitely something that should be shared lol. Since I'm trying to be better about not having full meals of carbs and sugar that was the one thing I noted. I also cannot say I know what it tastes like because I was on an extended fast when I was their uber eats. One says it's the best French toast in LA, the other says it's pretty good but bland without the syrup. Walking into that historic building with the massive glass ceilings and all that natural light felt like a total "healing moment." Came here for a second time recently! A lovely place to come for breakfast. Everything is always amazing here. As for parking, I normally do street parking a couple blocks away. I personally don't mind the walk. My only complaint is that I had no idea that dogs were allowed in this restaurant. There was a couple sitting next to me with a small dog that kept staring at me eat the entire time. It made me uncomfortable and a bit sad but it was tolerable. Everything was fine until the dog got on top of the table and I immediately became disgusted. Dogs are lovely but shouldn't be allowed inside the restaurant for this very reason. The entry area is small and we were there at 11:30am and most of the pastries were sold out. (get there early for the full selection) We studied the menu and ordered a couple of pasteries first. That is how it works, you order your pastry selections from the case, while waiting in line for the cashier to take your food order. We ordered a donut hole-like item that had a cream filling and a Passion Fruit cream cake. For our food, we ordered a Cuban Sandwich and the Adobo Pork Fried Rice. My wife ordered a cafe mocha and I appreciated that my iced tea was with bergamot. We took our table number (which was an old beat up tin cup - kind of fun) and found a table. We were seated right at the indoor archways to the back dining room. I enjoyed looking at the classic cathederal-like architecture while dining. Our food came and it was really good. I had the Cuban Sandwich and it was probably the best I've every had. My wife enjoyed her fried rice, but we both loved my salad that came with the sandwich. It was the best thing in the meal! It was simple butter lettuce, but the home made dressing was unbelievably good, with fresh herbs. We also enjoyed the desserts we ordered, but I was more impressed with the lunch items. Valley parking is available but no dedicated parking lot. Usually a meter spot will open up frequently. Went in for lunch and was unsure the set up, the staff was friendly enough to explain that you ordered the counter and self seat. Got a vanilla latte and a dry aged burger. Both were great though I will admit that the latte was better than the burger and fries. It can get a little loud when the restaurant is nearing full capacity, though that is to be expected. Dinner was bad. They seated us in front of the kitchen - It was hot AF, they didn't even care to ask if it was OK with us. And it got even hotter while we were eating our main dishes. They had a good selection for brunch and numerous options for delicious pastries so had to dabble a few and then bring them home to finish later. The venue is also stunning with a slight rustic style with modern twist . Felt like I was dining in a castle. Outdoor seating also available especially if you have a service dog. Here's what I tried: 1. Kimchi Fried Rice: served in a hot pan with bed of fried rice (white rice, kimchee, small pieces of rib bites-hardly any meat) with poached egg on top and garnished with herbs, pickled yellow radish, fresh red radish slices, and sesame seeds. This dish was decent but nothing stellar. 2. Also ordered an assortment of pastries...Ibe brioche (light brioche with ube cream that's not too sweet-good), pecan pistachio brioche (brioche filled with creamy white filling and topped with a thick layer of caramel mixed with loads of pecans and pistachios-this was good. It felt a bit too heavy on the caramel), carrot cake (standard carrot cake with some cream cheese-not bad), and the last one I'm not sure what they call it but it was delicious. I'm calling it a coffee cake Bundt cake. This one was my favorite. Very fresh Bundt cake with creamy coffee frosting and crumbled coffee cake on top. Soooo good. My friends and I decided to check this place out for brunch this past Sunday after seeing how beautiful the space was on social media and the variety of baked goods and food items they have. They don't take reservations for brunch, so we waited in line but, the line went by pretty fast. You basically make the line and enter the bakery area where you have the option to pick any baked goods and pay for them there or if you are ordering from the brunch menu, you have a separate counter to order and pay for your food and drinks. The place was packed when we arrived around 12:45 p.m. on a Sunday, but we were able to grab a seat at one of the communal tables upstairs. The service left a lot to be desired. It seemed like the staff had a hard time locating customers and delivering food efficiently, likely because it's a counter-service cafe rather than a traditional sit-down restaurant. My boyfriend and I ordered two fried chicken and waffles, an orange juice, a peach Bellini, and an ice latte, which totaled to $118 after a 20% tip, which I thought was excessive. The fried chicken was good but the corn gravy below it was too sweet and made the waffle soggy, which made it not so enjoyable. My peach bellini was also average. I did however enjoyed my vanilla latte. My friends ordered the fried chicken and waffles and the kimchi fried rice, which they also thought was average and overpriced. I had brunch at Republique for the first time last Friday! I brought my friend and we had a tasty meal. We parked in the residential area nearby and arrived at Republique at around 10:45am. The service was fast and the staff were friendly. Their pricing was on the higher end, but as expected for a restaurant in west LA. We shared This Morning's Bread, which was simple, yet fresh. My entree was the Shakshouka, which was colorful and tangy from the tomatoes; and filling with the poached eggs, chickpeas, and same bread. My drink was the iced Black Sesame Latte with almond milk, and it was refreshing, nutty, and not too sweet. Went here to use my Chase Sapphire dining credit. Foods pretty good, well known for their baguette and butter. Tried the hamachi crudo, crab roast, truffle risotto, and NY strip steak. Deducting a star because we ordered the steak medium but it came out rare. They took it back and fixed it but kinda surprised they missed the mark that bad with steak. They pre sliced it too so you can clearly see it was undercooked. Taking off a second star because they charge an optional 4% fee to help "pay for employee health insurance". It's auto included in the bill but you can ask it to be removed. It does not count as tip and does not go directly to employees. First time seeing this type of fee but felt a little slimy to just mention it in small fine print. But also shouldn't the employer be covering this, why should I be guilted into paying an extra 4% and then tip on top??? Food not good enough to have me come back. read more

Had dinner at République on a Tuesday night with friends and family and it reminded me again why this place is one of the best in LA. I've been a handful of times over the years and the consistency is just unreal. Chef Walter Manzke came by to check in and was incredibly warm and genuine, even taking the time to talk to my daughter and ask what she liked to eat. That kind of hospitality is rare. He ended up sending out a round of appetizers and champagne for the table, which made the night feel even more special. Just an all around wonderful person. The food was amazing from start to finish. Their bread and butter is still one of the most memorable things on the menu, simple but absolutely perfect. Every dish that came out was beautifully executed and full of flavor, and the cocktails were just as impressive, balanced, thoughtful, and worth ordering more than one. It's a tight place to get in, maneuver around the cashiers, seats, and the open kitchen. Also, it takes patience for sure. Wait to order, wait to seat, wait for your food and beverages. And for a party of 4 the food and drinks also arrived at different time, which made it not so exciting as we waited for one another to enjoy the food together. The taste, presentation, and amenities including the dish-ware were all above average and made your mood more joyful. Many worker roam around too, I guess to pick the dirty dishes and clean the table to make it ready for the next customers. Hut your table is not individually waited on. So you need salt and pepper, another jog of water, more napkins, you are better off just getting up and grabbing it yourself. Those are all available on the tables by the kitchen areas. However, the experience takes away from you just enjoying your company and conversations. So, why so many people love this place! IDK! I liked it but as you see in my write up, they can be much more organized and more customer friendly. I finally flagged a worker with tray speeding by asking, well felt like pleading, to take our dirty dishes, and he took 1/2 of them and never came back. I went on a weekend day and there was a small line to enter the restaurant, but it kept moving constantly since each party has to find their own table once inside. It definitely helps to check the menu while you're in line. You choose your dessert first while you are entering the restaurant and then order all your food and drinks at the register before sitting down. I tried the BLT Benedict and they were great, although they had a slight spicy kick for me since I'm not very used to spicy food. The Short Rib Burrito was extremely spicy for my taste, especially for breakfast time. The Potato Pancake was delicious. Next time I would probably add toast, the Morning Bread, a baguette, or maybe fries on the side to enjoy with the soft poached eggs that come with it. The regular coffee with cream was okay, but there may be better drink options on the menu. The waiters, bus boys, and everyone working there were very nice and attentive. Our drinks came first. I got the iced black turmeric latte, which is black tea caffeinated. It is heavy on the turmeric and lightly sweetened - a good drink. My wife enjoyed her plain coffee - they gave her an entire jug to keep it hot and refill, great deal for $5. Croque madame: delicious, big, crusty bread, but with sufficient fillings, along with a salad that is heavy on the vinegar to offset. Mushroom toast: soft eggs with lots of mushrooms, a nice balance of flavors. I think I'd give the edge to the croque madame but I'd get this to get something less carb-based. We got a box to go as well as a cup for the coffee. We also ordered pastries to go, and they were surprisingly mediocre. The basque cheesecake was much too milky rather than rich; the black sesame frangipane was not flaky; the brown butter tart was the best of the 3. Perhaps, these were off since we got them towards the end of their lunch hour? With no lines, I'd give it a 5 for the food but 3 for the pastries. Came here after hearing all the hype and left really disappointed. For the price and what they seem to expect for tips, Republique was not worth it at all. The avocado toast was bland, and the bread itself was oddly inconsistent. The sides were hard and crunchy, but the middle was too soft to hold the toppings. It ended up falling apart and didn't taste like much. The spicy honey chicken and waffle also missed the mark. The waffle was drenched in gravy, so it lost all texture and turned soggy. The chicken was tender, but the sweetness of the gravy completely overwhelmed the dish. It felt more like a dessert than anything balanced or savory. On top of that, the setup felt chaotic. You have to stand in line and order at a counter, then find your own table, and the tipping screen starts at 20%, with options of 24% and 28%. For a place where you're doing most of the work yourself, like standing in line to order and finding your own table, that felt super excessive. Service was very average, but nothing stood out.
