Rooster and Rice is good but not great. My first mistake is on me for not researching more online. There is very limited seating at the restaurant- 4 seats to be exact. 3 are counter level with the higher bar seats. There's only 1 regular height seat with just 1 small table. These are pushed up to the window so if you're lucky enough to snag a seat, you're looking out the window. Second mistake is also on me. I was looking at their menus online but this location has a very limited menu that does not include the fried stuff like the fried chicken leg. So we got 3 orders to go - 2 regular and 1 Marina. We got home and nothing is labeled. There was a lot of digging around to see which one was Marina (has the brown rice). Would be helped if they were labeled bc they look exactly the same until you start moving the chicken off the rice! Again, the food is good, not great. Chicken is tasty but not too exciting. The sauce is flavorful - salty and sweet with some garlic and beans (?). Rice is fine. Cucumbers on the side is also fine. I would not go back to the Stanyan restaurant. Finally got to try this place and it did not disappoint. I love my dark meat so I was glad they had an all-thigh option! I guess my hopes were too high for this concept. Nice modern amenities such as app/online ordering, customization and even catering makes this a no brainer choice if you're eating healthy and you don't feel like cooking. Unfortunately as someone who's actually been to Asia and had the real deal, this isn't going to cut it. I needed more flavor in the chicken broth rice and for the chicken itself to be less dried out. While I'm not nearly as gluttonous as I used to be, I still found the portions to be on the tiny side. For the price I envisioned it to be 10-20% larger or at least give me a little more foundational rice to fill the gap. It's funny that it took me selling my home on Stanyan Street to have a R&R pop up just blocks from my old place. I guess this probably worked out for the best since this would have likely resulted in some sort of poultry overdose. In any event, I found myself this week in SF and decided to pick up some R&R from the Stanyan location. While driving there, I called in my order for a couple Marinas. I was told it would be ready in 3 minutes. When I pulled up, I scored with a primo parking spot right across the street. I masked up, went in, paid with minimal contact using my tap-to-pay credit card on their checkout terminal and headed out with my takeout order in 2 minutes flat. Luckily they have a A board outside to help you identify this place in an easier fashion. Having tried another chicken and rice place in the city, my friend and I were not satisfied with it. Seeing as this place was new and close by home, we decided to give it a try. We called in our order and drove to pick it up. Parked on Geary and walked to this place. Paid with card and were on our merry ways home. This meal included a very generous portion of everything! Both of us ordered "The Original", which included breast and thigh meat along with jasmine white rice for $11.95. The meat was cooked well an was moist. Compared to the other place that gave us dry meat, we were very pleased with this place. The rice was flavorful as well. The sauce that they gave us was made of chili, ginger, garlic, and soybean. With chili being the first ingredient listed, I thought it would be spicy. I had my friend try it first - he said you couldn't even taste it. Low and behold, not very spicy at all, and that was perfectly find with me. Oh! Did I mention that this also came with a small bowl of chicken broth?? Overall, service was friendly. We were in and out of here with food in hand in less than 10 minutes. Food was great and full of flavor. We will definitely be back! Come check this place out for all your chicken rice cravings! This is the first branch I have tried of this popular chain, and I'm surprised I haven't patronized earlier! I know there are Rooster & Rice locations all around the Bay, but somehow, I never made my way to one until this past week. How much did I enjoy it? Let's just say that when I had to do business in the area for the better part of last week, I made up for lost time by visiting several days in a row, and I haven't gotten sick of it yet! Each time, I have purchased the "original" ($13.95) with an egg (+$2) and it has yet to disappoint. Consistency is key! The chicken is always soft and flavorful, while the jasmine rice is fluffy and fragrant. Service is not amazing by any means, but they get the job done. I'd say it is akin to what you'd find at your run of the mill fast food joint. Since it looks like I'll be conducting more work in this part of town for the foreseeable future, I definitely know where my new spot will be from here on out! Quick tip: If you have two people, and aren't necessarily ravenous, you can cut down on the extra rice by just ordering one plate, and adding extra chicken (+$4). You can choose either breast or thigh. This way, you can get almost the same amount of meat as two plates, but save some money, plus not have all the excess carbs. read more

I always wanted to try rooster & rice. Most of my friends who tried it said it was decent. But I decided to give it a try. Luckily at work, we had a special delivery of rooster and rice. So I was so happy to be able to try the dish out. Each order comes with rice, chicken, cucumber and green onion ginger sauce. I love rice and the ginger sauce it self. So I knew right away to pour the whole container into the bowl and mix and eat. One thing I do have to say it I wish they gave more cucumber but at the same time not skimping on the rice or chicken. I do have to say the chicken was a bit dry for me and there was no chicken skin. I know chicken skin if fatty but maybe it would of kept it moist. This was the most disappointing meal I've had in San Francisco, or possibly ever. Almost $20 for the most bland boiled tofu, flavorless brown rice, and plain steamed veggies. There is absolutely no flavor, seasoning, or even salt in the vegetarian option. The "vegetable" broth that came with it tasted like tap water. I'm not exaggerating. The side of sauce did not make up for any of it, at all. Maybe the chicken is good, but if you're going to offer a vegetarian option, it needs to be good too. I'm so glad Rooster & Rice has come to my neighborhood!!! I actually went to their Marina location about a year ago, but was slightly disappointed (I think I had a bad batch of rice). I knew I had to give it one more go though. I'm so glad I did!!!!!! I got the Marina this time, which was chicken breast over brown rice. You just slather on that wonderful soy, chili, and garlic sauce over the chicken....and experience amazingness!! The cashier also offered their house sriracha, and house habinero hot sauces, both which I took home, and were amazing!!! They definitely kicked up the dish a notch, something I definitely don't remember from last time. I loved the soup broth too. The also gave us complimentary chocolate coconut pudding for dessert, which they said was free for all the month of May! And in June, it will be something different. The food held up pretty well on the way home too. It's that easy compostable material, that you can just slide into the compost bin. The sauce containers were easy to rinse and recycle too. The order was confirmed but then cancelled shortly after via text message with instructions to follow up with the store. I called several times with no answer. It was frustrating but I moved on - until the charge came through on my CC statement. I reached out to the store who gave me the managers info for a refund. I reached out twice before speaking with her. It's been several days and I haven't heard anything back. I ended up disputing the charge with my CC.
