Schooner or Later is the spot my nephew wanted to try for his birthday. He is a fan of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives so he is always on the lookout for places Guy Fieri has gone to. I'm not sure if they made reservations, but we had a long 60 minutes wait before being seated at one of their outdoor tables. They were very very very busy that Sunday morning, and we were a large party of 12. Was Schooner or Later worth the wait? To the most important person (birthday celebrant) that day, it was well worth the wait. Personally, I thought that Schooner or Later was A-Okay. I ordered the "Mess". I had high hopes for this entree because it was featured on DDD. It is a blend of chopped ham, onion & bell pepper grilled w/ hash browns & eggs and topped with melted Cheddar cheese plus it is served with sourdough toast. It tasted average to me. No "Wow" factor. It seemed to lack something. Seems strange to say that especially since it already had so many ingredients inside this concoction. Maybe it could have used more seasoning to liven it up a bit. When we first got there the host basically ignored us and without saying a word grabbed menus and took us to the opposite side of the restaurant sitting where it was very windy. We asked him if we can sit in the sun since we have a baby and elder with us and it would be too cold there, he looked irritated and walked us back to the front desk. He did not tell us what the wait would be and went ahead and sat another table who had came after us in a sunny table and made us wait another 20 min to sit. We ordered the calamari which was very dry and a small portion, the buttermilk chicken salad (the chicken was incredibly hard and dry with very little salad dressing) and the fish and chips which were ok. I've been here a handful of times over the years. There is usually a loooong wait. It's a big reason why I don't go very often. I went this past Monday around 9:45am and that was perfect. Whoever ordered anything with lettuce or tomato I'm sorry, there were flies all over that salad bar and it was disgusting! This needs to be reported. The cooks did not wash their hands in between touching dirty to clean plates. They really need more training on cleanliness. I'm going to assume she was the owner but she needs to do better! She had a neck fan and kept adjusting it so it meant she was hot and sweaty. She was touching money and cards for her transactions and then handing out plates to the servers through the lazy Susan window. Also, they were closing so they were prepping the muffins for the next day. The owner did not wash her hands after touching money and her fan. Going back to the muffins, she was touching them with her BARE HANDS!!!! you would she would put gloves on. And she was touching them from the muffin top and not the bottom wrapper. This was my second time eating here. The service is always good, people are very nice. Place is clean including the bathrooms. The food was just average. The hubby had a Bloody Mary and said it was the worse he's ever had. He said the Bloody Mary mix from Costco had more flavor. So if you are a blood Mary snob don't order it. We love this cute little diner on the marina! Great service, delicious food and great ambiance. We prefer to sit out on the patio overlooking the water, weather permitting of course. My husband chose the chicken fried steak country breakfast with biscuits and gravy and he was raving about the white sausage gravy which is the best I've had in a while. I had the border breakfast burrito which was packed full of delicious ingredients. The burrito was just the right size and I chose to have cheese melted on the top which was a nice touch. This is usually one of my go to brunch places however, today I experienced the most unsatisfying service from multiple servers. The food alone was good. However, I was just Half way through my breakfast when the server brought over the check and asked if anything else was needed, which I found rude and pressuring. Also, we were seated outside as we asked to however it was very sunny and after sitting there for a while, we didn't feel comfortable, so we asked if we can be moved and the server attempted to put the umbrella up however it was to windy so the conditions didn't allow her to do so which we appreciated, but she seemed bothered that she had to move us to another table which was empty and there wasn't a waitlist so we didn't feel as if we were causing an inconvenience. As we were walking over another customer had also asked to be moved from their table and the server that was walking them over made a comment. Excellent food, service and nothing beats the views! We have been coming here for many years and other than expanded seating and menu, nothing has changed. I noticed some Yelpers complaining about the wait. If you come on the weekends, expect a wait. Lots of large parties, family and friends meeting up. Once you're seated, people tend to sit for a while enjoying the views and company. There's a large waiting area with a full bar! Tips for the wait - weekdays usually no wait (except Summer months); weekends have part of your party get there early and put in your name then grab drinks. Other tip is to sit inside at the breakfast bar (usually just for 1-2). Amazing views of the food being prepared. Very efficient system! Now for the food. Portions are large. Most of the breakfast dishes come with toast or muffins. Muffins are amazing. Tip - consider taking the muffin to go. If you eat it, be prepared to take part of your breakfast to go. Omelets are excellent. The Mess is very good. The biscuits and gravy is a great choice and comes with several meals (Captain's and Captain's Benedict). Today we had the ABC Omelet and Cinnamon Roll French Toast. Both were very yummy. Their Cinnamon Rolls are great but suggest taking to go for a future treat. Service is excellent. Very busy place but always attentive. They work well as a team getting your food and keeping your drinks topped off. Highly recommend the Mimosas and Bloody Marys! Note - both Triple D and Huell Howser did shows on Schooner and Later. This is how we first discovered this restaurant years before we moved to Long Beach. Schooner or later has been one of my favorite breakfast spots in Long Beach! I love their outdoor seating area right in front of the marina. Service is a hit or miss but food and ambiance has us coming back. My favorite would have to be their Belgium waffles with whipped cream on top, my husband and I get one waffle each they are that good!
