Classic bakery near where some relatives live so I have visited multiple times with different people. Definitely a favorite among family and friends. Swedish Princess Cake: definitely the best thing here, get it. Strawberry Shortcake: first time I got this it was amazing, second time it was a little dry. Bear Claw (forgot their name for it): great almond flavor and crunchy! Raspberry Croissant: sounds better than it tastes, just has jam inside. TLDR: get the princess cake. read more

This is the second year I've ordered by bday cake from here. This year my boyfriend ordered 3 bday cakes: mango cheesecake, strawberrry cheesecake, and chocolate mousse. They were all EXCELLENT and looked beautiful. I highly recommend this place. I brought the leftover cake to work and they were gone almost before I sat them down - GREAT STUFF PEOPLE! I love that you can order your cakes online (especially if you have a difficult to spell message). I HATE how you have to pick them up! It's always crowded and the counter is a little bit of a "free for all." I'd been waiting 5 minutes while the clerks helped other customers. This woman walks in, elbows her way next to me, and when the clerk walks up and says "next!" she says "oh me!" I politely said (in my most territorial tone) "Oh no, I'm sorry, you just walked in and everyone else has been waiting. I was next." and put my purse in front of her face on the counter. Last time I came here, I had the tiramisu, mango mousse, and princess cake. All their cakes are pretty complex with different textures, but only the princess cake impressed me the most. I'm actually surprised that I even wrote that, taking in account that I am certainly not a fan of princess cakes. I didn't really appreciate the customer service. They gave me half hearted, blunt responses to all my requests and questions. I would give this bakery four stars out of five. I ordered a mango moose cake for my husband's birthday. We loved the cake a lot. It tasted so good, not that sweet. Unpopular opinion here! I've been to Schubert's several times before and their cakes and pastries are good, but just not that good. I'd say quality and taste is comparable to Cocola bakery. Their sponge cakes have an artificial taste and too weak to hold up to the moisture of mousses and jams. I got the tiramisu mini cake last week and it lacked coffee or any depth of flavor. The quality of the chocolate flakes they use is also sub-par. I will say their Napoleon pastries and cakes are their better products. Otherwise for good quality pastries, try places like Tartine or b patisserie where you can taste the quality. They use ingredients like Valrhona chocolate. read more

Schubert's Bakery was the first place my fiancee and I checked out for our wedding cake. We scheduled a tasting on a Saturday. Even though it was super busy, the woman that served us gave us a lot of attention and was very nice to us. The cakes we tasted were really nothing special. I was a little dismayed that they served us on styrofoam plates with plastic forks (environmental reasons aside, it seemed kind of cheap). We tried the mango, raspberry, and apricot fillings. They were all just OK. The cake itself wasn't very thick and kind of reminded me of out-of-the-box yellow cake I can make at home. Overall: Service was good, cakes seemed cheap. Can't go wrong with Schubert Bakery!!! My fav has always been Napoleon (only by 1 piece and always sold out) and Strawberry Shortcake (by slice or whole cake). The cakes are yummy, not super sweet like typical American cakes. It's enough sweet, I'm asian, not super crazy about overly sweet desserts. Schubert is perfect, like Japanese level of sweetness. It was a week before my wedding, and I was searching town for a bakery that would take a last-minute cake order. *I do not recommend doing this*. However, because of the extremity of my situation, I can say with equal confidence that I do recommend visiting Schubert's. Whether or not you're getting married, actually. It was one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had. Sabine, the baker, was friendly and collaborative, but she was also quick to use her expertise to help narrow down our options and find what I was looking for. The generous cake samples probably helped too. (: (One slight disappointment: Sabine said that a marzipan coating would work with our Italian rum cake just as well as the traditional fondant. In fact, our guests found it kind of overwhelming. I love marzipan, though.) My fiancee and I wanted a cake that was chocolatey, not too sweet, and interesting without being potentially off-putting to our less adventurous relatives. The Italian rum cake was exactly what we wanted, and we got it more quickly than we had any right to expect, at a surprisingly low price. And it was utterly delicious. Yeah, um... KILLER. * Innocuous-looking strawberry pinwheel pastry = the joy of my entire day-long visit to SF. Every bite was like a trip to texture heaven and back. Plus the big sugar crystals really added something to the flavor. And the custard. And the strawberries. I think there are kiwis, too. They should call it the strawberry dreamwheel. * Little snacky cookies in plastic baggy whose name I've forgotten = perfect crunch and simple unassuming flavor. I actually usually hate hard cookies, but these ones definitely give hard cookies a point on the scoreboard against soft chewy ones. This has got to be my favorite bakery ever. This place is really close to my work so I go here whenever I need to get a cake for someone or that extra bump to get through work. I love their tiramisu cake. It's a little on the sweeter side but it's so delicious. It's very moist, mousey, and you can taste the coffee! Mmmm! I also love how it looks! The chocolate pieces on top and the little berries they used. So cute! I also tried their mango cheesecake which was really refreshing for some reason. The cheesecake itself was the perfect it was soft and creamy and it wasn't too sweet. Every time I come to this bakery I always get so excited and happy. The workers are really sweet. There's always a long line here, but definitely worth waiting. The staff here are really accommodating. I'm sure they're used to the craziness. They have mini cakes too so you can try a few. We tried their staple princess cake and tiramisu. LOVED the tiramisu!! We only got the princess cake because it was their staple cake.. It actually does not "look" very yummy. It's yellow, and looks a bit tacky. Thankfully it doesn't taste how it looks. It was pretty refreshing actually, not super sweet or creamy. I'm 8 months pregnant and all the baby wants is PRINCESS CAKE PRINCESS CAKE PRINCESS CAKE. The only place I've ever experienced true bliss when eating this delectable cake is at the Palo Alto Baking Company in Palo Alto (California St). I've tried it from several other places and something is always off about it, too much whipped cream, not enough custard cream, etc. I found Schubert's on Yelp and called to ask them how many Princess Cakes they had that day, they said they usually have about 12 in a variety of sizes. I asked them when it was made, that morning they said, so I had them put aside an 8 in cake for me. It was scrumdidlyumptious! 4 stars for a slightly too thick layer of marzipan on the outside edges. The cake was huge and fairly cheap for that size ($27). PABC charged close to $40 for the same size. Other than that, it was EXACTLY what the baby wanted. Came here today to pick up a princess cake, which I've never had before, so I looked like an idiot when I asked for it and they were all on display on the shelf...). The young gentleman who helped me was incredibly patient. The shop was empty when I came in and filled up by the time I chose the cake, but the gentleman didn't rush me at all. I asked if I can add some words in, no problem. They even went as far as asking what the occasion was and added decorations accordingly. Bought a birthday cake here for a friend. The cake was beautiful and tasted good too. Plus, the way they wrap it up in a pretty box made it feel worth the 25 or so dollars I paid. The fiance and I are getting married in September of this year, and we knew, hands down, that we wanted Schubert's Bakery to help us with our wedding cake. Charlene, who facilitated our cake tasting, was professional, thorough and helpful. We brought a handful of photos for inspiration, and she helped us figure out what was/wasn't doable. The cake tasting, by far, was the best part. Their mousse cakes have always been our go-to cakes, and settled on the mango mousse cake for our sheet cake. It was nice to be able to taste all of the cake flavors, and it only took us a second to settle on the chocolate truffle cake for our actual wedding cake. Summing it up, Schubert's makes it very easy, both in the decision-making and on the wallet, to provide your guests with a memorable and give-me-seconds cake to nosh on after dinner and in between dancing the night away. Keep in mind, they are able to execute only so much for your wedding cake. Bring photos, and an open mind. One of my favorite things to do when I was younger (and now!) is to go into random bakeries, look at the little cakes and pastries they have, and then pick a bunch to share. I think out of all the random bakeries I've wandered into, Schubert's has got to have the prettiest, and most delicious little (and big!) cakes! Recently got a bunch of little cakes for my mom's birthday and pro tip: early in the day they bring out more cake flavors so if you don't see the one you want, try and ask! Besides being one of the last old-world bakeries around, and having some of the best cakes for all occasions, Schubert's also has a fantastic online ordering system. I needed a cake for a friend's birthday so I went to the Schubert's website to find their hours. I was surprised to see they have a very sophisticated online ordering system for every cake and pastry they make. There are photos and descriptions of all the cakes as well as a long list of message suggestions for how to personalize it. As long as you place your order at least 48 hours in advance, you can order any cake, personalize it and pre-pay online. I wanted one of their famous Strawberry Shortcakes, but did not want all of the assorted fruit decorations they usually pile on top. I wrote a note in the 'comments' section specifying only chocolate decorations on top, and hoped for the best. I showed up at the bakery at my chosen time and not only was the cake ready and decorated exactly how I had asked, but I got to skip the line, my cake was put in a bag and out the door I went. I was out of there in under a minute! That's a big bonus when you're double parked in the chaos of Clement Street. Schubert's has kept their delicious history and quality intact while still keeping up with the times. Long may they reign! read more
