Just finished watching Crazy Rich Asians and was in the mood for dumplings. I always thought dim sum tastes similar or the soimais at least but apparently they aren't? So we came here because first 2 choices with high yelp reviews were too busy with lines out the door and this was close to my bf's house. A lot of people were there...although we found the dumplings a little soggy. So for the price I'd rather get dim sum. Oh and we ordered 4 different kinds of dumplings, but they all tasted the same :) maybe will come back to try other stuff. Food arrived quickly. Under five minutes. Fried rice and lo mein were good tasting but portions were smaller than at other local Chinese restaurants. Seems like a lot of money was paid for a meal which did not fill the three of us. Dumplings were very good. Best part of the meal. Wonton soup with dumplings was good but not as good as I remember it was at their other location, which is now closed. This restaurant was not busy at all. The Shanghai Dumpling King is a good restaurant, formerly the location of "Happy Palace" and across the street from the location formerly of "Emmy's" on Monterey Blvd, this seems to be the heir apparent neighborhood Chinese restaurant (with the China Wok down the street closed out of business as well). The XIAO LONG BAO (Shanghai Dumping) for which this is named is good, and priced fair, since you get 10 (ten) per order. It's good quality. I tried one other dish, the Ma Po Tofu, which wasn't the traditional Cantonese style I'm used to so it was okay and good, but just different than what I'm accustomed to. The service is good, and friendly. The decor seems a bit unfinished, but maybe because it's new, but it seems not decorated and simplistic. The parking is fairly easy, there's street parking in the neighborhood, so prepare to walk, and be aware of the street parking signs, there's a "no parking" as well as "street cleaning" area. read more

I ordered Shao Lon Bao, salty duck, Shanghai Chow Mein & honey Glazed Beef. Food came out pretty fast since its a weekday. Shao Lon Bao was a little on the sweet side, but it's ok. The Chow Mein was too soft and it should've be a little harder. They made udon style! Honey Glazed beef taste good, however the beef is a little chewy. My bf found this place but when I checked in via Yelp I gave him crap because there was even four stars. However, as we were seated more and more people filled into the restaurant so that changed my mind about this place. I had some friends in town and we kind of got one of everything as you will see in the photos. Our waitress was a cute little lady who gave us some recommendations. We got, of course, the dumplings. Unfortunately I really couldn't tell you what they were since the waitress pretty much put in he order for us. We had one veggie dish, salt and pepper shrimp (my all time fave Chinese dish), sizzling beef (even though I wanted the beef clay pot but the waitress insisted I get this sizzling beef instead), noodles, three different types of dumplings and a side of rice each. Now let me tell you it was all so good! Like every single dish. I'm so sorry I wasn't able to get the names of every single dish so please look at my photos and tell your waiter/waitress! Last time i checked the Edamame Beans are still available in almost all the Japanese Restaurants bec their popularity here in the U.S..... I was really excited to come here after seeing the positive reviews. We decided to go to the bay to escape the heat wave and we were craving dumplings. We had looked at the menu ahead of time and agreed on what items to get once we arrived. I went in person to place the order to go, I ordered the crab and pork dumplings, the pork buns, spicy wontons, and garlic green beans. One of the gentlemen had a thick accent so it was hard to communicate when I asked a question. Another guy came and answered my question, and he followed by asking me how many people were eating. I said 4, he responded with "This is not enough, take more." I politely said "no thank you, this is enough for us right now." He continued to try to convince us again and I said no, again. So he read the order to me (pretty fast).. and to make sure it was correct, I repeated it myself WHILE HOLDING 4 fingers up "4 items total, the green beans, spicy wontons, crab and pork dumplings, and pork buns" he said that's right. So the first guy then charged me. We came back to pick it up and left to the beach. Once we arrived, I noticed he gave me & charged me for 5 items when I only ordered 4 items. I was pretty upset at that because he was trying hard to get me to buy more and even though I said no multiple times he still did. That alone made me not want to go back. Love this place! Have taken multiple friends here and they all love it as much as us :) Our go to's are the Shen Jian Bao (soup dumplings with fried bottoms ), pea sprouts, green beans, and eggplant. This place is literally my favorite place in SF for shen jian bao. Not too fried, with the crunchy bottom and soft outside bao layer, in addition to the yummy soupy interior. Yummmm. Shen jian bao is one of the Shanghai specialties, and my moms side is from there. So I've had lots of soup dumplings and baos, and this place is my FAVE. Solid mid-tier Shanghainese spot! It's so far out that it is easy to snag a table here. The inside is pretty drab, but appears clean at first glance (the bathrooms were clean - good sign). The service is super rushed (expected all dishes to come at once) and a little direct. Most servers speak no English and the one or two that do ain't go no time for wishy-washy! What a great lunch meal and deal! True, I'm a vegetarian and there were only two choices available, but they were both delicious. I had the blistered green beans. They were cooked just right, still firm and glisteningly coated with a luscious spice infused oil. My husband had the eggplant and enjoyed his meal, as well, and he doesn't usually like eggplant. The lunch special comes with rice and soup. They have more vegetarian items in their buns and dumpling section of the menu. I recommend the vegetarian steamed bun. The Outer Mission location of Shanghai Dumpling King reminds me of the How I Met your Mother episode when Lily's apartment gets turned into a Chinese restaurant. The red carpeting, wooden chairs, and homey vibes make it look like it was once an apartment at some point. We only spent about $20 here, which was a serious steal: + XLB: The order of pork xiao long bao's comes in 10 dumplings and were bite sized, full of soup, and flavorful! + SPICY WONTONS: There was not much spice in these wontons, but instead had plenty of garlic, scallions, and a peanut butter sauce! This is not what I expected of the dish, but I loved it so much! It was flavorful, savory, and nutty. Staff was nice and the place was busy but the food was okay. My husband and I waited over 30 minutes to be served for food, only to be told that our order was lost. Customers after us had already been served their food as we waited and watched them take bites into their noodles. I'm not Chinese so I can't speak to the authenticity but everything we had was delicious. This was our second time here and it was as good as the first time! We had the green onion pancake (which our 4-year-old and 1-year-old devoured), the pot stickers, the spicy wontons, the fried tread bread, and the Shanghai dumplings. Each flavor different from the rest, all so tasty. A hit with our kids and us alike. The table next to us recommended the Shanghai noodles as well - next time! So it looks like I missed the lunch rush and special pricing for lunch too. I ordered the snow pea shoots $10.95 with garlic, spicy wontons $6.99 and kung pao shrimp $9.99. DO not order the kung pao shrimp off the regular menu as it is loaded with tiny bay shrimp and fillers of onion, red and green bell peppers and canned, yes canned, mushrooms. Yuck! The snow pea shoots were plentiful and super tender. Yes, I know that you can buy them at an asian market for about $5 per bag, but by the time you clean them you've got almost nothing left. So, yes, the $10.95 is the market price. The best thing is the spicy wontons in a creamy sesame sauce - these are worth ordering another TO GO! My husband and I had a massive craving for dimsum and chanced upon Shanghai Dumpling King on DoorDash. It definitely turned out better than we expected, taste-wise. I should preface this review with some background. My husband and I are really kinda picky about the dumplings we like. There are usually around three components that we look out for: 1. Thinness of the skin - which gives the dumping mouth feel 2. Flavour of filling - taste, the texture and the soup within (if any) 3. How well the dumplings are held by the skin - this is a bonus factor because it shows how well the dumplings are made As such, this review will be structured around these three components. We ordered the hung zhou pork and crab dumplings, potstickers, spicy chives and pork dumplings and the pan fried pork buns. I know dumplings should usually be ordered and eaten at the restaurant for better texture, so I will be super lenient in terms of that component. The clear star was definitely the pork and crab dumplings. Although they fell apart easily (again, probably due to the fact that we ordered it as takeout), the skin was thin enough and the filling so flavourful and delicious. I loved the subtle taste of crab and the juicy bits wrapped by the skin. The potstickers were decent; clearly superior to other establishments in terms of filling. However, the skin was definitely too thick and was not as crispy/tender as we'd like. The spicy chives and pork dumplings came covered with loads of garlic and some chilli oil. The taste of the individual dumplings was great although the skin was chewier than we would like. However I was rather disappointed with the chilli oil and the excessive splash of raw garlic. The oil was not spicy at all (I wish it had a stronger kick) and the raw garlic didn't help the dish at all. I wish the garlic had been fried or mixed with some sauce so that the taste would meld better with the dumplings. I was however, sorely disappointed by the pan fried pork buns (or shen jian bao). The bao was just soggy by the time we were able to start eating. However that wasn't the worst part. It was too sweet and the filling was a tad too sweet as well so the flavours didn't complement each other. I would not recommend this item at all. In summary, the dumplings here are decent and fairly well made. The flavours are great, but the texture of the dumplings can definitely be improved with thinner dumpling wrappers. We look forward to trying this restaurant in person and perhaps update this review after. read more

Do yourself a favor and order the namesake -- the Shanghai soup dumplings are legit the best in the city. They are massive in size (too big for the soup spoon) and full of juicy soupy deliciousness. The spicy wontons are a very close second here -- you can taste the fresh shrimp and the green onions and sesame sauce are bomb. The decor is for sure outdated, the carpet could use a few deep cleans, and you might be asked to sit on a fold out chair. But the quality and value (3 items for under $25) make this a solid choice any day of the week. Despite the frenetic energy of this place (ton of takeout and delivery), the few staff here are friendly and helpful. $20 minimum for credit cards. read more

Please please please do not order the green onion pancake. It is deep fried to more of a jerky/biscuit texture and super greasy. The green onion bits in it have been cooked to death and almost brown. The pancake is just like 1-2mm thin, and will probably snap if you try to bend it. Help yourself and just panfry the frozen ones from ranch 99 and it would be 1000000000x better. The dumplings were not great and tasted like frozen ones you can buy anywhere. No soup in the XLB. One guy sold us on some BBQ buns but the filling to bun ratio was so low. XLB was ok. It was fascinating how the waiter poured the sauce on the sauce bowls. He had the sauce in a beverage bottle. Like a cocacola glass bottle. And he poured it like an alcoholic drink lol. The spicy lamb dumplings were good. Though i feel like its missing something. Something minor though. It was ok. The preserved egg with tofu was good. Tofu was at great consistency. Sauce was lacking. Tofu tasted like tofu(some tofu dont taste like anything at all). Seafood dumpling soup was ok. The weather has been cold lately so the soup was nice to end our lunch. Great selection of veg dumplings! It can be so hard to find veggie dim sum, especially when most of the dumplings traditionally come with meat. They have THE BEST veg bao (vegetarian steamed bun) here. The dough is perfectly soft and fluffy and there are lots of veggies inside. The dumplings are great and have the same mixed veggies as the steamed buns. The sweet buns are awesome too, basically just the dough of a bao with nothing inside and sweetened condensed milk on the side so you can choose to eat that or not if you're vegan. Unfortunately, there are no ingredients listed so I can't confirm whether any of the dumplings are vegan or just vegetarian. Typically bao dough recipes are vegan (flour, yeast, sugar, oil) but I would just ask to double check. read more

I only frequent this place because I live one block away... but I wish the food were better. Assumed that having 'dumpling' and 'king' in the name would make for some delicious soup dumplings, but unfortunately, I was wrong. I've been to this location three times thus far (probably will go more just due to pure convenience), and each time, I have ordered their Shanghai Steamed Buns (AKA soup dumplings or XLB), and each time I have been disappointed - there is no soup to be found!! My roommate did tell me that she went one time and had soup in every one of her dumplings, but I'll believe it when I experience it myself. As of now, I have yet to try a true soup-filled dumpling at this place. The other food on the menu is mediocre at best. Most tasty option is probably the pork potstickers. I've also ordered the pan fried buns and stir fried string beans, both of which could be greatly improved - pan fried buns needed more meat and less dough; string beans were just not spicy/authentically Szechuan at all.
