I want to make this clear as this is for the last time I came here. I can only compare what I saw to watching a horror movie. After flying back home, my wife and I were tired and didn't want to cook dinner so we were thinking about where to get some food. We settled for Sumo Ramen as we like or shall I say used to like the taste of the food we had before. ( I am cringing as I am typing this) We did a phone order and I went down to pick up our food and after I paid for the food I saw one of the cooks (from the register you have a clear shot of the kitchen) start picking his nose while the other cook sneezed over the food. I instantly felt grossed out. The guy that was waiting to order behind me actually left as I'm sure he saw the same thing. I think these people need a lesson on personal hygiene as that was totally gross. read more

Good solid food at a decent price served quickly. My family of four still orders enough food for six peeps, but that's how we roll. As my last chewable meal before I start my three day juice cleanse... this was satisfying. Ordered the calamari curry combo. Small bowl of six calamari rings, lightly breaded, perfectly seasoned sitting on steamed white sticky rice, with a side (looks like a ladel) of Japanese curry. Yummy! so good (and so small) I didn't share. Small bowl of shio ramen with a small slice of chashu... didn't even touch it. Took it home for hubby's lunch tomorrow. And four pieces of gyoza (gyoza was small, but tasty). Add a little gyoza sauce, chili oil, and schimi togarashi... winners! Kiddos got the shrimp tempura cold soba and seafood crispy noodle. Everything was tasty... (**but I am now hit by a carbohydrate-coma... so, let's finish this review before a kanak attack hits me). Shrimp tempura cold soba came with three shrimp tempuras and a good portion of green cold soba noodles. Delish! "Seafood" crispy noodle was also tasty (gravy was thick and yummy) but the seafood was lacking. There were three small pieces of shrimp, two itty bitty overcooked scallops, and a piece of squid. The most pronounced topping was cabbage, dotted with snap peas and sliced carrots. Hubby got Sumo ramen. Big bowl of ramen topped with half hard boiled egg, four pieces of chicken katsu, seaweed, corn... he asked for no veggies because I don't like bean sprouts or cabbage in my ramen... Now... isn't that love? Also got a side order of mochiko chicken... just to try, since I heard good things about it. I am not a fan. I've had better mochiko. This was too sweet for me, oily and almost "sticky"... I don't know how else to explain it. Forgot to mention, on the way out I bought two of the new advertised fruit teas... one lychee and one guava. Other than the employee writing the flavor on the teas... neither I nor my better half could tell which tea was which flavor. This is made with jasmine tea, so it is very floral. We still like it, but we're tea drinkers. .. just don't be surprised if all you taste is Jasmine. read more

I just wanted to start off by saying that I do come to this place a lot and the food here is really amazing! But there's just somethings that's gotta be said and needs to be fixed! So I ordered what they called "Spicy Chicken" in their menu. Hot and spicy red crispy chicken Sautéed with garlic and green onions . Sounds good right? I know that's what I thought too until I got my food... when I opened up my take out box it was just regular chicken . Very disappointing Sumo! Then I asked about it. And the cashier told me ohh we don't cook it like that anymore. Just only regular chicken with a little spicy. And by the way the chicken wasn't even spicy! It was just regular fried chicken! Okay so if they don't cook it like that anymore and they still advertising it on the menu ain't that FALSE ADVERTISING?! went there yesterday after reading the reviews. ordered the mochiko chicken curry combo,side order of spicy chicken wings and tako-yaki i don't know if the owner changed or if all the other people have a different taste bud than we do, but the food was definitely not worth mentioning! the mochiko chicken was for sure no mochiko chicken! looked and taste more like char-sui. the curry sauce was thick and not even warm. the TaKO ball batter was completely wrong. it was watery and mushy. then the spicy chicken wing come, first we thought wow! so much garlic and red pepper flakes, should taste really good, but after the first bite, we realized that it was not cooked properly! i was really disappointed ! read more

I use to come here a lot during my high school days. It was one of our to go too. But they changed a lot after all these years. My boyfriend came here to order their spicy chicken. In the picture it is covered in sauces and a lot of spice! But when we got home. It was just regular chicken. No spice, no sauce whatsoever. False advertising! Today, we came and asked them about it and the lady said that they no longer stir fry it. So the chicken is just basically regular chicken. Why still have it on the menu then? So I will be straight up that when I go here I never get ramen. It's not that I don't enjoy a good bowl of noodles & broth... But I am here to rave about the katsu curry! I have only gotten take out here; seating looks limited as it is a small location & they're great about call ahead orders. I switch it up between pork and chicken in order to not get bored; they're both cooked to perfection with juicy meat inside and a super crispy panko shell. I actually really like the cook on their pork, I have never gotten it over cooked here which is a pleasant surprise. So this katsu meat is laid on top of a bed of steamed rice. There is so much meat for the price of a plate lunch; it's the best deal I've ever seen for katsu curry. Anyways on to the curry! The curry is thick, full of flavor and nice & creamy. I love that it's not watery or oily but is truly what I imagine when I am craving curry. I almost always use my hands to dunk my katsu in ... Drooling as I type. Yum! I also appreciate they keep the curry on the side (don't know about eating in) because I hate when the rice sops up all the curry before I finish my katsu. Hard to base a rating on just one ramen since Sumo Ramen has a gigantic menu. So 3 stars for now and subject to change once I try more things. I got the spicy beef ramen. Well the first, and most obvious, observation is the portions here are big. People may look at that as a great thing, and it is from a quantiy/cost stand point. However, in a QUALITY/cost view, maybe not? Like many other spicy soups, the spice provided my mouth with a certain numbness that blocked out any other tastes. I've only had 2 things from this place and both were takeout: chicken katsu curry and mabo tofu ramen. The portions are huge! I had the reg. chicken katsu curry plate and that thing was probably two orders. I could barely finish half of it. The curry was a little sweeter than most and had carrots in it, which I thought was great. This beats Curry House.... by a mile. The mabo tofu ramen was alright but nothing really special. I've had better. Even after heating my broth to near boiling, the ramen noodles were still kinda clumping together. It was more like a tofu noodle cookie in my opinion. I finally found a curry restaurant that has Tempura Spam and Curry that is the best! Since I got my Spam Curry fix I tried there other items on their menu and they are spot on I'd totally recommend them for your curry fix but no forget the Tempura Spam Curry! read more

Sumo Ramen & Curry has expanded over the years to include several locations around the island. One evening we decided to visit their Market City Shopping Center location in Kaimuki. We were able to find lots of parking available in front of this ramen shop which is located next to Ben Franklin. We arrived to find this ramen shop fairly empty. Inside this restaurant it appears a little run down and quite small. We were seated at a two-seater table in the front of the restaurant under the freezing cold air conditioner. Since we were not prepared for the freezing cold, we then moved to a table in back of the restaurant. It was much warmer but the only problem was, the table wobbled back and forth. From the menu I ordered the mini shoyu ramen with a side order of croquette and gyoza. Prices here are affordable and the portions is just right. Not too much nor too little. The ramen broth was a bit too strong and salty for my taste buds while my favorite was the potato croquette and the gyoza. It was so good. read more

This Sumo is WAY different than what I thought it was going to be! There's a Sumos on the Big Island and they offer totally different food. But that's probably 'cause this was Sumo Ramen & Curry. I got a mini chicken katsu curry (or watevs). It was pretty prime. I got the mini. And it really was mini! Not like L&L where they say it's a mini, but it seems like a regular plate. Haha. Still, the curry was good (not supah spicy) which was good. The katsu was alright, nothing special really. The service was pretty good; I got my food fast. This is like awesome cheap eats for comfort food...get the ramen combos so you have a little bit of everything. My oldest daughter loves her some curry ramen. She loves it here. I like to change it up...miso, shoyu, char siu...all ono-bonos! After eating and taking out from here I've noticed that there is one thing you can count on this place for being consistently inconsistent with...and that's the service. But it's the kind of place you need to look pass not having friendliness and personality all the time. I took the reviews on here seriously. Decided to try the machiko chicken curry combo. Mmmm mm. The chicken was excellent, they curry blew my mind. Never had this stuff before. I was pleased to see that it came with a small ramen, which was good, but probably better if eaten at the restaurant, and the gyoza, super tasty! Even my picky son ate. I ended up ordering again the next day, adding my first experience of garlic shrimp. My mom wasn't a fan, but I was hooked! I love garlic so... Great place to try and they do deliver using Uber eats. I've been really obsessed with curry ramen (it's either a phase or because the weather's getting cold :P) recently and this place hits the spot. I've come to Sumo Ramen way more times than I can remember-- it's just a good, cheap place for comfort food, and I love ramen! There's a lot to choose from-- from ramen, curry, combinations and sides. Not too crazy about their curry dishes, their fried rice is a little oily, but gyoza is pretty good, with the perfect combination of tender top and crunchy bottom. I basically come here for the curry ramen, not too crazy about other kinds. Can't complain about service-- employees are pretty friendly. Quality-wise, it's okay. It's hard to resist the urge to give it more stars just based on sentiment. I feel that Sumo Ramen is a hidden gem back there between the wine store and Ben Franklin's arts and crafts. It's hardly ever crowded. The food is fantastic -- IF you order the right thing. Yes on the vegetable noodles, the gyoza, the mochiko chicken, the curry ramen, the croquettes. This time was a different story.... I ordered the croquette curry combo. Ramen broth and char siu was SALTY and noodles weren't cooked right. Curry and rice portion seemed to have shrunk since the last time I came (about 6 months ago). One of the croquettes was burnt.....and to top it off, the gyoza didn't arrive until after we were almost finished. The server plopped it down and walked away. After a late workout, a friend suggested Sumo Ramen since our usual ramen spot had just closed. We arrived at 9:30 PM and were told, "You know we close at 10:00 PM, right?" (restaurant-speak for "HURRY UP!!!"), to which I wanted to reply, "Well then you better cook faster!" but held my tongue. To avoid ditching my workout efforts, I had the vegetable ramen. Who knew that a bowl of lifeless broth, packaged noodles, canned corn, and boiled cabbage could equal $7? The noodles weren't mixed well and came as a partially congealed block. My friend had the sumo ramen, which looked a lot more appetizing than my choice, but the food quality didn't live up to the ~$9 price. I liked the menu variety a lot but was overall unimpressed. Am I a huge fan of their mochiko chicken and curry udon and many different types of fried rice? Or am I huge fan of their great prices? Probably a little bit of both. Tucked away on the less frequented side of Market City, Sumo Ramen looks modest from the outside and leads you down a long walkway past their kitchen to their dining area in the back of the restaurant. Service isn't the most enthusiastic, but you will get a "welcome" and a "thank you" as you come and go. One look at the menu and you'll see that almost everything is under $10, which frankly is the best part. A full plate, a full size ramen/udon, all run for about eight or nine bucks. I had some of the chicken katsu and mochiko chicken and both were fried the right amount to still be crisp but not burnt. Portions are generous and food comes fast. I've eaten at Sumo Ramen many of times, especially when I want a fast, cheap, ramen meal. I would say Sumo Ramen sets the average mark in the world of ramen shops in Hawaii. If you're going to spend more on a ramen shop meal, you better be getting a better meal than that from Sumo. My usual order here is the Mochiko chicken curry and ramen combo with miso base for my ramen. The mochiko chicken is very flavorful and crunchy and the curry is your typical japanese box curry, which I just love. The ramen with miso base is standard. Nothing really special, but again no complaints on the taste and portion size. The gyoza like almost every other ramen shop is frozen and fried...par for the course if you ask me. Again, nothing against Sumo Ramen, in fact I would recommend it to anyone, who hasn't been there, but Sumo Ramen is par for the course in ramen shops around Hawaii. read more

I asked the girl several times when it would be done and she replied "almost ready," and would smile and chat in a form of Chinese to her co-worker. Sumo Ramen is friggin' great! ... If you DON'T ORDER the ramen! Yeah, yeah, I know it's called Sumo RAMEN, but just don't order the ramen and focus instead on all the other great stuff on the menu! Namely: curry anything (the sauce is tastier than CoCo Curry House, hell yeah, I said it!), mochiko chicken, spicy chicken wings, gyoza, omuraisu (Omlette Seafood Fried Rice on the menu), curry fried rice, hell, even the mac salad is tasty! As for the ramen, the broth is super bland but strangely healthy feeling haha. Chashuu is pretty tender but you may only get 1 slice depending on which ramen you order. Bonus points for tossing a slice of uzumaki kamaboko in haha! Noodles themselves have decent koshi but aren't quite as smooth as the superior ramen places. The one exception to the "no ramen" rule is the Mabo Tofu Ramen. Yeah, I know it sounds weird, but try it, it's really tasty! Garlicky and full of dried shrimp, it's full of high quality tofu that actually has a fragrant soy flavor! Combine the good eats (except for the ramen except for Mabo Tofu ramen -- get it? LoL) with pleasantly competent service (don't yell at them and they won't yell at you haha) and a very clean seating area and low prices, whaddya get? A go-to meal spot when you dunno what to eat! So what if it's not the most "authentic" Japanese ramen place (Tenkaippin wins there)? It's good and cheap and comfy! read more

Have had a dozen or more Miso Ramens here. Not all at once, mind you. I think they make an excellent one. The broth is tasty and with just the right amount of miso. The char sui topping is good and there is plenty of ground pork throughout the ramen. The mochiko chicken is above average. The fried egg rolls are excellent. They're very crunchy. Ramen shop with other options: fried rice, fried noodle, curry rice, gyoza, udon, soba, and fried toppings such as croquette and oysters. My favorite things to order: 1) Mini ramen $3.50. It prevents me from over-eating and is perfect for lunch. 2) Curry fried rice. It's yellow, curry infused, not white rice with curry on top, though they have that too. This curry fried rice smells divine! This dish does not prevent me from over-eating. It's sooo good. They have it in mini-portion, but I never order it. The decor of this location is cute.
