This place was definitely an experience of its own! We were immediately sat down by the most friendly server and given complimentary miso soup. Might I add, this soup tasted rich and was amazing! After slurping it, we fought amongst ourselves as to what to order. There were so many choices it made it downright difficult to settle down on what we wanted to try out. With that, we placed our orders and let the fun begin. Within minutes we had our Jacobs special arrive on the table. It reminded me of a nacho type of spice. The wonton was so crispy and the spicy tuna on it was amazing. Afterwards, we were introduced to some amazing toro. While the market price was $10, it came with a small bit of sashimi and real wasabi. What a treat! It melted in the mouth and was higher quality than the stuff found in vegas. Thats right- HIGHER quality! I must add ,the nigiri in general had a perfectly seasoned rice. I could taste the slight sour as it is meant to be, and was fluffy and obviously made with care! The uni was served as nigiri and had lemon slices to the side. Thanks to not having seaweed, the taste of the uni itself was brought out, and boy was it amazing! With that came the spicy white dragon and the sushi on fire roll. I must admit, I was a bit disappointed to find that the shrimp tempura inside was soggy, but ate it nonetheless because the taste was ON POINT. The spicy white dragon was somehow very rich despite looking as if it would have a very simple taste. It was definitely deceiving and a delight. The sushi on fire was layered, and the baked langisto on top made it! I must say though, neither of these rolls were my favorite, for everything else on the menu was so outstanding. I did not try the halibut carpaccio, but it was presented beautifully. The shrimp boats were presented as shrimp with crab meat, a quail egg and smelt egg on top. Because of this, we had to eat them with our hands. They tasted amazing, the quail egg brought out a nice texture as well. I would highly recommend trying this one out as well. The hello kitty hand rolls probably were from the gods themselves. They had absolutely no rice, and instead had crab meat as a substitute. Regardless, it came with so much fish and was huge in both size and amount of flavor. The textures of each item were very different and brought a new component to the roll. This was by far the best hand roll i have ever seen, and I would HIGHLY recommend it. Furthermore, the simon simon wa amazing as well. It was essentially smelt egg, avocado, fresh water eel, tamago and spicy tuna all on a stack. What really made this a masterpiece was the eel. It was a thick, house made cut. It was almost melting in my mouth, and was still warm from being freshly toasted. Next time I come here, I definitely will try the eel on its own to clarify this. Lastly, the white roll. This was essentially a spicy salmon (i think) roll tempura fried served with spicy tuna in the middle. I gotta admit, as simple as this sounds, I LOVED this roll. It was a lot of fun to each and was a pure pleasure. Overall, the service was extremely kind and friendly. The waiters were attentive, and did above and beyond what their job requirements were. I could tell the sushi chefs loved what they were doing, and thus he overall vibe of the restaurant is a happy one. I definitely would recommend this place! Next time I think I will try some rolls without shrimp tempura in them though, for it wasn't crunchy enough for my taste. Other than this minor issue, the establishment is a hit and must visit. I came here this past Sunday night after reading all the positive Yelp reviews and was surprisingly disappointed. We came with a large party of 8 with one more on the way. On the upside it didn't take very long to be seated on a Sunday evening. Our waitress took our order and within minutes food came rolling out one after the other... then stopped. We were still waiting on 3 add'tl rolls and a seaweed salad. We waited for our waitress to come by to check on us so we can ask but she never did. On top of that, the last person in our party arrived. Our waitress was not at all attentive of this and still had not come by to check on us or greet the latecomer. We finally managed to flag her down ourselves and informed her of our missing items and the latecomer needed to order. Instead of resolving our issues immediately, our waitress first tried explaining herself. I don't care how or what happened, only that you resolve the problem immediately in a positive manner. Don't get pissed off at me b'coz you screwed up. Of course, the latecomer got their food before we got the 3 missing rolls and salad. Really?? We finally got our last 3 rolls BUT the salad still never made its way to our table. We pointed this out and made sure we weren't charged for it. Service was a HUGE disappointment. It's a bummer too bcoz the food was pretty good and I can see why so many Yelpers like this place. She never even refilled our waters or came to check on us after the order mishap... absolutely zero customer service on her part. Lucky for her gratuity is automatically included for large parties. But service is a big factor in the dining experience in my opinion... and the service we received at SOF is the reason I will not return. read more

I recommend the dishes without rice: - Four Corners ($17) : my fav because it comes with four different kinds of seared fish (salmon, tuna, albacore, white tuna) sliced on placed a top four different salads (shredded daikon, cucumber, seaweed, octopus). - Albacore with fried onion: thinly sliced fish topped with fried red onion slices. - White tuna carpaccio : thinly sliced fish topped with slices of jalapeño and pieces of cilantro - Oyster shooter $4.50 each: shot of oyster, quail egg, masago, sake - Hello Kitty Handroll!! is a must try if you like rolls with mayo in it. I love you Sushi on Fire! During a gluttonous, fish feeding frenzy trip to the West Coast recently, I stopped at your Long Beach location for a Sunday lunch. (I did in fact dine at the Huntington Beach location for dinner that same day.) You are much smaller than your HB sister, but you have a cool, inviting atmosphere, good service and friendly chefs. We split the lunch sashimi platter. I usually NEVER get a platter since there is always some fish that ruins the deal for me, but this one delivered on all fish fronts. It was delicious! There was also the usual free miso soup, and we got 2 small side salads. Tack some salmon sushi on the side, and you have a perfect lite lunch. SOF is the best sushi I have had in Belmont Shore. They brought it and it had masago so I politely reminded the waiter and he bright me back a new one surprisingly fast. He seamed annoyed.. I took two bites and then I realized they had just scraped off and poured a ton of eel sauce on top. When I asked the chef if they just wiped it off and gave it back to me he said yes as he laughed in my face. I'm a gentleman but i wanted to throw my food at him, instead I firmly let them know they could easily have a lawsuit on their hands with someone else had they ignored allergy restrictions because they are lazy. This is probably the BEST sushi restaurant in Long Beach. I usually go to the Huntington Beach location, and I can't express how happy I am that they opened one in Long Beach. The sushi is just as good and it is sooo much closer to me. I've never had a bad experience at any of the Sushi on Fire locations. The service is good and the food usually comes out pretty quick. They also start you off with complimentary miso soup! Definitely try the White Roll or the Hello Kitty Handroll. Two of my favorites! Tip: 20% off your whole bill if you come during happy hour! Thank you thank you thank you Sushi on Fire for being open on Mondays! SOF in Long Beach is like the smaller fraternal twin to the SOF on Main St, HB. The same quality and artistry are all here, minus MaMa's regular appearances to hustle her customers along (at least during Lunch hours). I can't help but be disappointed about the lack of MaMa, because I still don't have bragging rights about being told to hurry up and move along...and her other staff are too polite by far for any of that. Bummer. Oh well, it's all good -- and I do mean that literally. Everything at SOF is good! All the sushi is crafted with fine attention to detail and not too heavy on the rice filler. It's not cheap but you won't feel cheated, either. I especially appreciate the Galaxy Roll and the Sashimi Salad here. Surely it doesn't get any better than this on Second Street! I love sushi and I love this place!!! To get the basics out the way this place is on the corner and parking is street only from what I noticed consisting of residential or street parking. As far as sushi goes, it was fulfilling and satisfying as I ordered the sushi on fire, crunchy A, the 2 piece crunchy crispy rice spicy tuna and the spicy shrimp roll. Of all the orders, I was surprised that for the first time I enjoyed the lower prices spicy shrimp roll the most as it tasted fresh and had an actual spicy kick! The crispy rice spicy tuna was not you average small sized piece and was actually huge and took more then a couple bites to take down but I loved it!! Sadly the crunchy a which is a style that has never let me down do so here as the rice on it was hard and stale and didn't allow me to enjoy it. :/ The seemingly popular Sushi on Fire Roll was also not as good as it is displayed to be and it's price point BUT I still enjoyed it when I took off the piece of salmon they placed on top. Overall, if I'm ever in the area I'd stop by here and enjoy some rolls and definitely try more of the lower priced rolls as they did not disappoint. I LOVE the edamame. It's on fuego, though, so I prefer my spicy edamame, a little less spicy. Just ask, and they'll adjust it for you. It's just perfect when done that way. It's got this great smoky flavor, and there's just enough garlic and oil to make it finger-licking good. Yep. I wrote finger-lickin'-good. Anyway, I end up craving it. Perfectly spicy and loved the rock salt! My favorite roll is the "Refreshing" I love how it's topped with jalapenos and a thin slice of lemon for that added twist! We also got the "Galaxy" and "Black Dragon" roll, equally good! The eel had the fatty consistency as catfish..completely delicious! I wanted sashimi, but my friend isn't a big fan. So this one star is for takeout service. We have been going to this restaurant for over a decade and have always had a good experience. Today, we ordered through Uber Eats as we have multiple times in the past. When we got our food, it was missing the main meal (Sashimi platter for 2!) Apparently they forgot to put it in the bag, and when we called back, they didn't do anything to fix the situation. An insincere apology at most is all we got. Apparently since they "called the Uber driver" 15 minutes after he left, it's their problem. Definitely a disappointment! read more

Everytime my roommate has gone she has gotten the B.S.C roll and it has always given her a stomach ache afterwards. I was not aware that she had this problem and decided to go and order the B.S.C roll for myself because it sounded good. I was there Monday 5/30 and got the worse food poisoning of my life. I even started throwing up blood and had to go to the ER because it. Ok. Really do love this place - food, chefs are cool and always seems busy. Love the location as it is walking distance. The other night though the waitress had a attitude. Kinda ruined the experience. I am in the business (not serving sushi but in the restaurant business) and I feel that service is a very important part of the experience, obviously. She was not friendly at all. Didn't get us what we needed - annoying and to top it off when the $48 bill came - gave her $60 - rudely asked if we needed change and when I said no - she just turned around - nothing - no thank you, see you again, kiss my a.. nothing. Based on other reviews, we decided to try this place and were HUGELY disappointed! They sat us at the end of the bar and once seated, we were practically ignored. After 10 mins, the waitress finally came to ask what we wanted to drink. We asked for two Kirin beers and two waters. We got the beer and no water at all. We ordered appetizers, sashimi, and sushi rolls at the bar. 10 mins later, we received our order and first thing we notice is they put too much sauce on their rolls and overload on the garnish. Honestly, if the sushi and fish are good, the dish doesn't need all the sauce and nonsense around it. There is very little fish on the plates!! That's what people go to sushi places for.... is the fresh fish! The sashimi tastes ok but the portions are smaller than other sushi and fresh fish places on 2nd street. Most disappointing was the fact that an Asian bus boy/waiter reached right in front of us to gather dishes without excusing himself or acknowledging his presence... he had no regard for personal space and overall I think they all lack in customer service skills. I have been before and my roll was good (California roll, hard to mess that one up) so I assumed that I would have the same experience next time I went ... I placed my order over the phone for pick up, the boy who took my order was so sweet! I wish I caught his name so I could give him credit. The time came for me to go and pick up my order, I was greeted by a very obviously bothered woman who gave me my food. Seemed upset that I was in the restaurant to begin with. Sometimes the best tasting food comes from really bad service ... but this wasn't the case. I finished my sushi - it was fine, but my four other friends did not like their roll and didn't finish. Well, I can't say for sure that the food was authentic Japanese but it was definitely delicious. And very creative. I had one of my most favorite sashimi dishes in recent history here at Sushi on Fire. It was called Four Corners. Very creative and very unique in presentation. Basically four different kinds of seared fish on top of four different "salads". The salads are composed of things like seaweed, radish, cucumber. Very tasty and very impressive. I highly recommend it. Also we had the several of their special rolls and all of them were delicious. Unfortunately the names of them evade me at the moment but I think that if you order any roll that looks interesting to you, you won't be disappointed.
