These were the most popular items on the menu so he says. The fish and chips were lightly battered, lacked salt, and the fries that came with it were a little hard. I wasn't impressed, I'm not sure if it's because I am comparing it to the Gordon Ramsay's fish and chips I had in Vegas, but it wasn't very crispy and there was no flavor. Definitely needed something more than lemon 3/5 The brussel sprouts left a burnt aftertaste in my mouth. I couldn't eat it. Didn't have any flavor. As if they were fried and placed on your plate. The texture and how they were cooked were good, but not the flavor. 1/5 Tuna nachos were my favorite. Why? Wonton chips, with the right amount of sauce, the Tuna was chopped consistently and every bite was refreshing. Avocado and a nice slaw to join the party. I liked this very much. And I would come back for this. 4.5/5 The restaurant interior was beautiful. You do have to find parking and pay unfortunately. The service is a bit slow. I was so excited to try this place, and unfortunately, our experience fell very short-primarily because of service. The decor and ambiance is great. Made reservations for my hubby and I on a Friday night. Plenty of open seats when we walked in. They do a nightly toast where everyone in the restaurant sips a small drink together- which is such a fun and unique idea. We were seated in a cozy corner and started to review the menu. A few minutes later the hostess came back and asked if our waitress had been by. We said no not yet and she stated "I can seat you somewhere else so you don't get ignored". We looked at each other kind of puzzled and said if it's ok we'd like to sit where we were because it's quiet enough to hear each other talk. She said she'd try to find our waitress and tell her where we were-which was nice, but made it seem as if she had seated us in an invisible corner. Our waitress came by a few minutes later- all night she seemed annoyed and as if we were bothering her. Before we could even finish a sentence, she was already gone. As for the food- the pistachio burrata toast appetizer was wonderful. Nice crunch and kind of sweet with the pistachio nuts- in our books a total winner. I ordered the fish and chips and hubby had the shrimp salad. Both were great and we'd definitely get them again. Another server situation I did not care for was when our entrees came- the server took my husbands dirty silverware from his appetizer plate and just dropped them in his salad. Didn't put them next to his salad or offer to get him a new one- literally took them off his plate and dropped the handle and all into his salad. Was disappointed with the overall dining experience. Had lunch with a friend today and started by being insulted. Hostess was friendly; greeted and sat us promptly. The server is an entirely different story. Maybe he's new? He initially took our drink order and then insulted my friend. We both thought it sounded good to try the Rusky Rose and both ordered it. The server tells my male friend- "that's a girly drink, you sure you want to try it". Uhm- how do you even respond to that?! So he changed to a margarita on the rocks. We both requested water with our drink. Server returns with drinks and water for me; not for my friend. What?! Why would you bring only one water? We order an appetizer and I gently remind him we need another water. The appetizer came before the water! The rest of the lunch was so slow it was crazy. After delivering the appetizer he ran off without asking for lunch order. I had to flag him back. He never refilled water. We had to flag him for anything we needed. The two stars are for the food and drink. We got the crab hush puppies - they were GREAT! The "girly" Rusky Rose was delicious. And then the tamale pie for the main dish was also fantastic. It takes some balls for a restaurant to show such confidence in its kitchen that no salt and pepper shakers are in sight. This was a small detail that spoke volumes as I left The General Public and wondered how to write a review when I had such mixed feelings about the overall experience. I did not dislike this concept bar-restaurant at all. I've come to expect certain misses from all restaurants, who simply don't know how to behave when a single diner walks in. I skipped lunch to leave work for a doctors appointment and decided on an early dinner, heading to the Town and Country area with every intention of pizza at Grimaldi's. But sometimes I can't resist the lure of a well-reviewed establishment, and I lucked into a parking spot right in front of the restaurant near City Centre. It's hard for me to tell whether The General Public wants to be a sports bar (lots of TVs around with baseball on), a gentleman's club (big, brown leather chairs, Oriental throw rugs on the floor), or an upscale Cracker Barrel (large jars of canned vegetables on shelves, antique and flea market art on the walls). I had attentive, unobtrusive service, a fairly decent margarita (although not asked about frozen or on the rocks, salt or no salt), and did not feel rushed by wait staff who checked on me. All of this mattered not, because the food was seriously delicious. I mean, bad ass southern comfort. Lots of great sounding choices for starters but I chose the crab hush puppies. These arrived hot and dusted with powdered sugar, and I was floored by how good they were. Crunchy, crispy, light, fluffy, creamy and the crab was there in each bite. A tub of whipped sweet butter accompanied the hush puppies that were perfectly seasoned and not even close to being the greasy lumps you typically get in restaurants. These were a terrific bargain at $8. The menu has a variety of dishes to suit most tastes -- burgers, sandwiches, and fish & chips. I decided to try "pork and greens," because that's something pretty uncommon on a menu. It's the kind of food I ask my mom to make. I was open-minded but skeptical that this would be what I hoped it would be. But, I was wrong. The sliced pork, topped with a very subtle mustard sauce, came out on top of perfectly braised greens with bits of onion and small squares of corn bread. The corn bread slowly disintegrated into the greens, and it was incredibly delicious and comforting. To me, it is incredibly difficult for an experienced southern home cook to get the seasoning of greens right. The pork was juicy, a bit on the tough side, but also well seasoned and peppery. I would have a hard time going back and not ordering this again. In the end, I enjoyed the food more than the ambiance, but can see where The General Public could grow on me. Happy hour priced drink, appetizer and dinner entree totaled less than $30. read more

We stopped in to TGP for drinks and light bites between our double feature day at the movies. It was around 3:30 and there was only one other couple at the bar. We had a party of 8 and they swiftly moved some tables together to make us comfy. Our waitress was very nice, but she didn't know what she was talking about with the wine. We had asked if the Rose was sparkling and she said yes. We ordered multiple glasses, but when they came out it was just normal Rose in a normal wine glass. When I mentioned it wasn't sparkling, she looked shocked. It was decent Rose, so two of us drank it, but one glass went back. The other cocktails we had were great. I really enjoyed the FITZGERALD (Hendrick's Gin, Lemon Juice, Bitters) and a few people got DR. FUNK (Flor de Cana, Lemon, House-Made, Grenadine, Absinthe) which I also liked. Both were smooth and easy drinking for sure. As far as the food goes, the East Coast oysters were on point. Cleaned well and served with a shot of vodka, so we made a shooter of course! They had what seemed to be house made oyster crackers as well. The crab hushpuppies were a hit too. Really great concept and flavor was very tasty. The shishitos and shrooms however were just too greasy for me. Since it was my birthday celebration day, they also brought out some birthday cake bites as well as big slice for us to share. It was pretty dang good. Second time in I had the shrimp and 'grits'! So dang good. Wouldn't hesitate to get them again! Happy hour go-ers beware. For $3 drinks at 3-4pm, $4 drinks at 4-5pm, $5 drinks at 5-6pm you would think it would be the greatest HH ever. I've been here 3 times now. First time was a Friday after work. Second time was a Friday afternoon because I thought maybe the first time was a fluke. Third time was a Tuesday. Same experience each time so I'm done. After finding a table (they are always quite busy). It takes a solid 45mins from finding a waiter/waitress to receiving your drink. Multiple other waiters will stop by in this time and ask if you'd like to order. We kept telling them that we did order but it had been 20+ minutes since. They all give the same response "they're working on it then." So you end up getting 1 drink per hour max. Also each visit, extra drinks have been added to my or other group members Bill. Total scam. They have a pretty cool happy hour, 300pm=$3.00 HH, 400pm=$4.00 HH, and $500pm=$5.00 HH. Why lie? I came here for $1 mimosas during brunch! I met up with an acquaintance, and neither of us had been here yet, so why not? The place was fairly empty, but service was still pretty slow to start. But our server was friendly, so at least there's that. We opted to sit at the bar, so you'd think service would've been a little faster, but speed did improve as brunch went on. I think our bartender was just overworked, because I didn't see anyone behind the bar area with him. I ended up ordering the burger. Just delicious. And the mimosas kept coming. They have them mixed up in advance and keep them in one of those big countertop drink containers where they just press the spigot and fill up the glasses. Food - 5/5: Absolutely delicious fish and chips! The batter was fried just right, giving it a nice and crispy shell but leaving the fish inside juicy and moist. Granted, the fries were a little salty, but they tasted great and (I expect bar-like food to be over-seasoned more than under). Also, the "sauce" provided isn't quite a tartar sauce, but more like a cole slaw. I actually much prefer it than tartar sauce, as it's a nice refreshing element to balance the fish and chips! Presentation - 5/5: Looked very clean and fancy. Almost like an exquisite fish and chips! Beautiful and makes it feel like fine dining. Service - 3/5: Perhaps the most disappointing aspect. It wasn't too busy, Thursday night, but there was nobody to greet us when we walked in. So, we went here as a group of 12 on a Sunday early evening for dinner. The General Public took a reservation and set aisde of long table for us. The service was prompt and attentive. So we ordered the shishitos & mushrooms which is described as tempura style shishito peppers and mushrooms. The flavor in the dipping sauce that came with this dish was great - enough to make me try the dish again (mainly because I love shishito peppers & mushrooms) BUT this is definitely NOT tempura lol. The batter was pretty heavy and we ended up picking off most of it so that I could enjoy actually enjoy the fried veggies. The mushrooms were so deep fried that I lost almost all of the essence and texture of the mushroom and the batter unfortunately took over. I am hopeful that they will work on their tempura recipe because if they used a real tempura/lighter batter this dish could potentially be 5 stars! Excellent food - awful service. We went for brunch on a Saturday, and the place was surprisingly empty for a restaurant offering $1 mimosas. Only about 5 tables were occupied, so I was surprised when they declined to seat me until the rest of the party arrived. I sat at the bar and longingly looked at our table, which was all set up and reserved already. I ordered mimosas and a coffee to start. The waiter asked if I wanted a French press or just a "regular coffee". I answered regular. My mimosa was brought, our orders were taken. No coffee. My friend tried to order the quail and hot cakes and was told they no longer carry it, but they were in the process of updating the menu. No alternative was suggested. I ordered the shakshuka (amazing) with sausage, expecting it to be cooked inside, a side of fries, and reminded him about my coffee. It was being made, he assured. The coffee arrived about 15 minutes later in a French press even after having asked for just "a regular coffee". He brought cream but no sugar. I asked for sugar, which took another 15 minutes even when he came by to check on us and deliver salt shakers to a table nearby. Our food was delivered by busboys who had no clue who was eating what. It was also incomplete and incorrect. My friend was brought (and later charged for) a side of bacon she did not order, I was missing my fries and there was no sausage in my entree. Additional mimosas were not offered even when most of our glasses were empty. We considered walking to the bar to ask for more drinks. The only saving grace was that the food is absolutely delicious, the flavors crisp and fresh, with lovely presentation. All in all a disappointing but delicious experience within budget - my total came to less than $35. read more
